No one really likes a dandy. Sure, you’ll see some Hollywood vixen prancing about with one every so often but this is real life, and most women prefer their men sans pocket square. Also, pretty much every man will mock you behind your back. (Caveat: Those who are in any way connected to the world of fashion can adorn themselves with all manner of non-functional accoutrements. And Johnny Depp can do whatever he likes….he’s Johnny Depp after all.)

Un-cuff your jeans, banish your scarves (unless it actually is cold) and burn that fedora. It’s time to get back to the basics.

1. A pair of dark blue denims is a wardrobe essential! Avoid skinny or baggy fits (very few men can pull-off the skinny jeans look. Most of them are rock-stars. And no, your basement doesn’t count)

2. Buy a plain white and a plain black t-shirt. Add the dark blue jeans and you’ve got yourself a go-to summer outfit. Add a black leather jacket in winter.

3. Shoes are a tad bit more complicated. A basic vans style pair of kicks are great for casual occasions and a pair of dark brown boots are perfect for a night out. However there are a wide variety of good shoes out there. Exercise good judgement and steer-clear of embellishments.

How to dress for an interview

An interview is as much about personal presentation as it is about your resume. Your attire reflects your work attitude and when you walk into your potential office, looking sloppy can mean instant rejection. So here’s a simple list of DOs and DON’Ts to help you nail that dream job:

Buy a variety of shirts in solid colours (white, grey and navy blue are always safe bets)

Get a pair of black tapered pants. Keep those crazy red pants where they belong (hidden in the deepest recesses of your closet!)

Buy a basic pair of leather lace-ups. Keep them simple; unnecessary detailing does not look professional.

Make sure your shoes are polished and your clothes are ironed before you leave your home.

Get a black or brown belt (yes, it does need to match your shoes!). Opt for a low profile belt-buckle.

DON’T

Wear bright colours unless your out cycling at night (getting run over by errant trucks doesn’t impress employers… but then again, if you’re looking for a night-time job and your only means of getting around is a bicycle, you have bigger problems)

Buy pleated pants. They may be more comfortable but they look sloppy!
