This greyhound sweater knitting pattern is about an intermediate skill level, largely because the tapering and gusset will take a bit of attention. It's knitted from Worsted / 10 ply (9 wpi) yarn, on needle size US 7 - 4.5 mm.

I know better than to carry a loose dog in the car. Really, I do. It's not safe for the dog and it's not safe for the driver, passengers, or anyone else who is sharing the road.

Even the best-behaved dog can be unpredictable in a moving vehicle.

Have you ever put your dog into the back of your car and by the time you get around to open the driver's door, he's sitting up in front all pleased with himself, and your front seat is all covered with dog hair and dog slobber? So much for looking good when you get to your destination!

Worse yet, have you ever been driving along and had your dog decide he wants to climb through between the front seats to help you steer? That's a terrible accident just waiting to happen -- too dangerous!

No, really, I do know better than to transport a dog without a crate or kennel, or at least one of those handy doggie seat belts... but...

Solvit Front Seat Net Pet Barrier

Last week I had to drive a rescue dog -- a handsome young male Viszla -- from the shelter to his new owner's home. It was just a few miles on a quiet road, I didn't have a doggie seat belts with me, and my small car is not tall enough to fit in a travel crate for a larger dog. Surely, it would be fine?

Viszla is a particularly high-energy breed, however. The dog did fine, sitting in the back seat and watching out the window as the landscape rolled by down the road, until I slowed to turn into the owner's driveway...

Curious, the pup suddenly jumped forward with his whole upper body between the front seats, bumping my arm and almost making me hit the mailbox post at the side of the road.

Heart pounding, I slammed on the brake.
What a close call!

I reached back to push the pup down into the back seat, and proceeded slo-o-o-owly up the driveway. I can't help imagining what would have happened if we had been driving at speed, or in traffic, instead of just turning in a driveway.

Never again.

For the time being, I've rigged up a cargo net as a barrier between the front and back seats of my car to keep travelling dogs safely contained -- and I'm shopping for a pet barrier. At the moment, I'm looking at these two models:

Solvit Front Seat Net Pet Barrier, still under $30 and fairly easy to put up and take down, but with a frame to hold the mesh net in place without sagging.

I wouldn't necessarily leave either of these pet barriers in place if I was leaving a front-seat-loving dog (or any dog with problem issues around barriers or containment) in the car for more than a minute or two, just because they are both soft net barriers that could be chewed. But you know your own dog best, and will be able to judge if you need to go for a metal barrier like a cargo grate, a travel crate or kennel, a seat belt harness, or another item of dog travel gear to keep everyone safe from a dog-distracted driver.

What You Need To Know About Doggie First Aid

Knowing first aid can save the life of your dog. Just like people, dogs have accidents and need medical attention sometimes. And the thing is that sometimes there is just not time to get to the vet, that is when doggie first aid is so handy to know.

Knowing what should go into your animal first aid kit is the key to keeping your dog alive and well no matter what happens. If you do a lot of hiking and walking in places like parks or on trails then you should also have a kit in your car for emergencies out of the home.

Most of the items in your doggie first aid kit are similar to those you have in your regular one for the family. There are however some things that need to be specialized for the animal of your life.

Here are some of the basics that your first aid kit cannot do without:

♥ Hydrogen peroxide
♥ Sterile eyewash solution made specifically for pets
♥ Roll of absorbent cotton
♥ Some cotton balls
♥ Clean, white cotton sock (to cover wounded paws)
♥ Gauze pads
♥ Tape
♥ Small scissors with rounded tips
♥ Tweezers
♥ Instant ice pack
♥ Bulb syringe for suctioning mucous from mouth or nose
♥ Injection syringe without the needle (to give liquid medication)
♥ Small flashlight

All of these things should fit neatly into a container that has a nice tight lid. This will help to keep everything clean and sterile no matter how long it is sitting on the shelf or in the car. It is also a good idea to have the name of the vet and his or her phone number right there on the lid so that even in a panic you will know what to do. You may even want to put the number of the local emergency animal hospital as well in case something happens early in the morning or late at night when the regular vets are all closed.

Bee stings are one of the most common of all dog injuries. It is important that you get the stinger out right away before an infection has time to set in. This will also help to minimize any pain that your dog may be in. If you have to, restrain your dog and then use the tweezers in the first aid kit to pull out the stinger. You can then wash the area with some lukewarm water and baking soda. This can help to take some of the nasty stinging away and easy the pain suffered by your dog.

Ice and Benadryl will also help to keep the pain and swelling to a minimum, just make sure that you ask the vet just how much Benadryl is enough for your dog. Just like kids it is important that dogs get the right dosage when they take medications.

Never rush an injured animal. While it may be your instinct to run over and start taking care of the injury, this may spook your dog and scared animals can get a little upset. You do not want to end up with an injury as well, do you? Of course not, so take your time and let the animal know that you want to help not harm.

J.K. Rowling Adopted a Greyhound

Celia's Greyhound Rescue (Fife, Scotland) reports that J.K. Rowling, author of the astonishingly popular Harry Potter series of books and films, has just adopted a greyhound.

The 4-year-old female greyhound, whom Rowling has named Sapphire, is reported to be settling in well with Rowlng's male Jack Russell terrier, Butch.

We predict a sudden surge in applications to adopt retired racing greyhounds as the celebrity author's many fans move to emulate her taste in pets.

If so, it would be a rather amusing irony — as the human fashion world begins to reject the extra-thin look for runway models, will we see a increased fashion for the "skinny dog" look in pets?

If it saves a few ex-racers from euthanasia, maybe a celebrity-driven fashion fad could have a very positive purpose...

Canada's "fashion capital" city of Montreal went to the dogs at swanky Westmount Square, last spring, when Poochey Couture threw a dog fashion show. It's just one in a recent flurry of high-society events that capture the media interest and help to feed an on-going controversy about the dog fashion industry.

(Unfortunately, the debate does tend to overshadow all the charitable fund-raising that is associated with such doggie fashion shows — in this case, to aid the cause of Alzheimers research.)

Should people dress up their dogs?

Non-dog-owners whose opinions have been formed simply by tabloid TV shots of Paris Hilton in front of the camera, accessorized by her teacup pup, would deplore the idea of clothing animals.

Owners of rough-coated hardy breeds might well agree.

But those who live with and love the temperature-sensitive toy breeds, or have adopted lean and thin-coated greyhounds, for example, would argue that dog apparel serves a very real purpose. And there is no contesting the fact that the harsher climates do demand some additional protection for our dogs.

The question then becomes one of personal taste, surely?

If the dogs are happy and healthy, and comfortable in their clothing... Live and let live!

After all, some people do dress their human children in a ridiculous manner, too!

If you want to keep your dog safe and at the same time stylish, then you might want to get your pooch a personalized dog collar. Dog tags are easy to fall off but personalized collars can be engraved with all useful information that would come in handy in case your pet gets lost or gets into an accident.

What a Personalized Dog Collar Should Have

A good personalized do collar should be durable, non-toxic, easy to clean and good looking for your dog. If you want to get a collar for training purposes, a personalized dog collar may not be a good choice since training needs different collar features. Consult a professional dog trainer about training collars.

You might want to look at personalized dog collars that can work with body harnesses, especially for toy dogs or puppies. With a body harness, you can pull the leash without risks of choking. Instead of tightening the neck, the harness would tighten around the chest, providing you with control without causing strain on your dog's back or neck.

Generally, leather is a good choice of material for the personalized dog collar because it is quite stylish and ages well. However if your dog is a chewer, leather might not be a good choice because leather can deteriorate with constant nibbling and moisture from saliva.

Whatever material for the personalized dog collar you choose, you should check it regularly, at least every month, to see if there are signs of damage due to chewing or other factors. Replace damaged collars immediately to make sure that it would not fall off easily from your dog.

Nasty Dry Crap Dog Doormat

Whoever designed this doormat was definitely in tune with the way a dog thinks! Dry kibble? "Nasty dry crap!" says Rover...

Manfred of Sweden fashion was the main feature between June 3 and September 3, 2006, in Design for Pets, an exhibit shown at the Röhsska Design Museum for design and decorative art, Gothenborg, Sweden.

Manfred himself appeared in the movie To Make a Poodle featuring Eagle-Eye Cherry and the renowned Swedish actresses Eva Röse and Lena Nyman...

This year, MoS rocked the runway at Pet Fashion Week in New York City.
