to match your decor and look great in your home?
Fashion Dog

This greyhound sweater knitting pattern is about an intermediate skill level, largely because the tapering and gusset will take a bit of attention. It's knitted from Worsted / 10 ply (9 wpi) yarn, on needle size US 7 - 4.5 mm.
When that cold weather comes on, every greyhound will be grateful for a cosy sweater that buttons snugly at the side to keep the belly warm. The turtleneck can be worn rolled down or pulled up to double as an ear-warmer!

Here, our greyhound model is the mature and handsome Sam. His sweater was knitted with Lion Brand Wool-Ease yarn, in a gorgeous Blue Heather color, by Kathy (aka KathyinGeorgia on Ravelry.com).
You can see the sweater as a "work in progress" as well as more photographs of Sam modelling the lovely finished product in Kathy's photostream on Flickr.
The side-buttoned greyhound sweater is an original knitting pattern by Terri Royea. Check out her Dog Knits set on Flickr for more inspiration!
Just imagine a pair of pups -- or more -- clad in Playboy Bunny costumes, with one debonair dog dressed up as the reclusive and eccentric Hugh Heffner!

Hugh Heffner Dog Costume

This pullover style costume features a plush pipe toy to complete the look. Made from low pile plush and with a high-cut, stay-dry belly, this costume is a must have for Halloween!

♥ Fetch!

The fact that it comes with its own toy pipe? Perfect touch!

Playboy Bunny Dog Costume

It comes complete with white bunny tail, padded chest, bow tie collar and black bunny ears. Soft and comfy, this low pile plush costume features a high-cut, stay-dry belly...

... and a high Cuteness quotient!

♥ Fetch!

A unique group costume for anyone with more than one dog, that's sure to raise a smile on your Halloween rounds.

Both of these Playboy Manion theme outfits are by Casual Canine, available from Amazon in sizes X-Small, Small, Medium, Large, and X-Large.

Fashion Dog

Anyone who has ever lived with a goofy and loveable black Labrador Retriever will immediately recognize the characteristic expression on the face of this cartoon dog.

This big-eyed Lab is just one of the exclusive dog breed designs from Cartoon Dogs, which offers a wide range of products from greeting cards to mugs and totebags, formerly via Cafepress and now with its online store at Zazzle.com.

(Update: now, you can even get custom dog-themed US postage stamps showing a picture of the delightful Cartoon Dog of your choice!)

If you thought Elf Yourself was fun (remember, the website that let you put a photo of your face onto a dancing animated elf to send Christmas greetings?), you'll love Holly Mastromatto's Hatz for Bratz for the holidays.

The clever Etsy crafter has a variety of styles of hats, snoods and ear-warmers to make you go "Awwww" -- but if I could only choose one? Tempted as we are by the pink pom elf hat featured on Good Housekeeping recently, but the red-and-green Elfin hat shown here is just too cute to pass up.

Made-to-order in stretch lightweight fleese, with sculpted-fleece big pointy elf ears and a sparkle pom-pom, the Elfin hat is not only cute but will keep your pup's own ears warm in chilly winter weather. "Fun and functional" -- and what a great costume for your pooch to wear to the Santa Claus Parade!

This small hat is suitable for cats and ferrets as well as small dogs 10-15 pounds. Larger and smaller sizes are also available by custom order.

Dog

What's the perfect costume for a dog to take part in a Scottish wedding, celebrate Robbie Burns Day, or attend your local Highland Games?

Why, he needs a handsome dog kilt, naturally!

Dogs & Co is a family-run business in North Wales, UK. They've been supplying posh pet gear for 10 years now -- apparel that's "top of the range and both innovative and traditional" to say the least!

Among the fun offerings at Dogs & Co are these Tartan Kilts for dogs, made from a lightweight acrylic wool fabric. Choose from either Red Stewart Tartan or Black Watch Tartan (I love the dignified Black Watch, shown here). All kilts are hand-pleated and adorned with shining gilt buttons for the perfect finishing touch.

Dog kilts are now available in 7 sizes to fit diffferent breeds, from the 8" size (suitable for Teacup Chihuahuas, for example) and 10" (mini Yorkies) right up to 20" (to fit a small Labrador or good-sized Spaniel). You'll want to measure your dog to be sure of the correct size, as a good fit is key to the neat and dapper look.

♥ Fetch!

Yes, Dogs & Co do ship outside the UK.
Fashion Dog

Old Home Week coming up? Taking a kid to college or university? Let every member of the family get into the varsity spirit -- including your toy breed K9 pal.

Tiny toy dog breeds (up to 12 pounds) can score a winning look with Fu Fu Fashions styles made especially for your small dog. Little shirts and dresses are custom-made for your dog in sports team colors with varsity logos or initials, to show your support for the old Alma Mater.

We think the perky Yorkies and Cairn terriers look especially smashing in Fu Fu Fashion's college dog clothes!
I know better than to carry a loose dog in the car. Really, I do. It's not safe for the dog and it's not safe for the driver, passengers, or anyone else who is sharing the road.

Even the best-behaved dog can be unpredictable in a moving vehicle.

Have you ever put your dog into the back of your car and by the time you get around to open the driver's door, he's sitting up in front all pleased with himself, and your front seat is all covered with dog hair and dog slobber? So much for looking good when you get to your destination!

Worse yet, have you ever been driving along and had your dog decide he wants to climb through between the front seats to help you steer? That's a terrible accident just waiting to happen -- too dangerous!

No, really, I do know better than to transport a dog without a crate or kennel, or at least one of those handy doggie seat belts... but...
Solvit Front Seat Net Pet Barrier

Last week I had to drive a rescue dog -- a handsome young male Viszla -- from the shelter to his new owner's home. It was just a few miles on a quiet road, I didn't have a doggie seat belts with me, and my small car is not tall enough to fit in a travel crate for a larger dog. Surely, it would be fine?

Viszla is a particularly high-energy breed, however. The dog did fine, sitting in the back seat and watching out the window as the landscape rolled by down the road, until I slowed to turn into the owner's driveway...

Curious, the pup suddenly jumped forward with his whole upper body between the front seats, bumping my arm and almost making me hit the mailbox post at the side of the road.

Heart pounding, I slammed on the brake.
What a close call!

I reached back to push the pup down into the back seat, and proceeded slo-o-o-owly up the driveway. I can't help imagining what would have happened if we had been driving at speed, or in traffic, instead of just turning in a driveway.

Never again.

For the time being, I've rigged up a cargo net as a barrier between the front and back seats of my car to keep travelling dogs safely contained -- and I'm shopping for a pet barrier. At the moment, I'm looking at these two models:

The low-cost Outward Hound Front Seat Safety Barrier, which can easily be installed and removed as needed.
♥ Fetch!

or

Solvit Front Seat Net Pet Barrier, still under $30 and fairly easy to put up and take down, but with a frame to hold the mesh net in place without sagging.
♥ Fetch!

I wouldn't necessarily leave either of these pet barriers in place if I was leaving a front-seat-loving dog (or any dog with problem issues around barriers or containment) in the car for more than a minute or two, just because they are both soft net barriers that could be chewed. But you know your own dog best, and will be able to judge if you need to go for a metal barrier like a cargo grate, a travel crate or kennel, a seat belt harness, or another item of dog travel gear to keep everyone safe from a dog-distracted driver.
Fashion Dog

Why should the fashionable dog be left out of the Halloween fun? Casual Canine has a HUGE variety of adorable and affordable costumes for dogs of every size, from the tiny little "princess puppy" to a big "bad boy" dog in prisoner's stripes, to superhero costumes. And of course the traditional witches and ghouls and other Halloween characters with spooooky style.

Some of our favourites -- besides the "Little Stinker" skunk costume, shown here -- are the Bumble Bee, Iguana lizard, and of course the ever-popular "Hot Dog" costume for your favorite weiner dog! If I had three or four Dachshunds, I'd dress up one as the hot dog and the others as the condiments to go with it (Ketchup bottle, Mustard, etc. costumes are also available from Casual Canine).

Scary-cute? We think so!

Ridiculously low prices, too, by the way: some of these dog costumes will set you back less than 3 or 4 dollars!

♥ Fetch!

Even more affordable, order all your little low-cost items together and take advantage of free shipping deals offered by Amazon. Or, if you're super efficient, plan ahead to the holidays and bundle a bargain dog costume in with whatever gifts, decor, or party items you'll need to get for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hannukah, and New Year's Eve...

Long or short hair, this brush works well to remove excess dog hair, making your dog feel more comfortable and look clean and healthy.

This high-quality stainless steel dog brush really works to remove your dog's soft thick undercoat that can take weeks to shed naturally at the change of seasons -- saving your furniture, carpets, and clothing from being covered with dog hair that seems without end.

I've found the FURminator brush to be especially effective on breeds with double and triple coats, like Husky and Shiba Inu, and long-haired breeds such as Golden Retriever, Newfoundland, Bernese Mountain Dog, Grand Pyrenees, and the like. The stainless steel tines are quickly and easily cleaned after use with a rinse under hot running water. Give it a quick dip in disinfectant solution if you're grooming a number of different animals, as in a dog grooming salon,, as you would with any groooming tools.
A study in simplicity, the bed’s cushion is raised off the floor, which helps keep animals warm.

And it's surprisingly practical, too. The maintenance-free, waterproof and breathable inner cushion is stuffed with shredded "memory foam" that returns to its original shape when the dog takes his weight off the bed — and that pretty faux suede cover is removable, and safe for machine washing.
Just like people, dogs have accidents and need medical attention sometimes. And the thing is that sometimes there is just not time to get to the vet, that is when doggie first aid is so handy to know.

       ♥Fetch!
Knowing what should go into your animal first aid kit is the key to keeping your dog alive and well no matter what happens. If you do a lot of hiking and walking in places like parks or on trails then you should also have a kit in your car for emergencies out of the home.

Most of the items in your doggie first aid kit are similar to those you have in your regular one for the family. There are however some things that need to be specialized for the animal of your life.

Here are some of the basics that your first aid kit cannot do without:

♥ Hydrogen peroxide
♥ Sterile eyewash solution made specifically for pets
♥ Roll of absorbent cotton
♥ Some cotton balls
♥ Clean, white cotton sock (to cover wounded paws)
♥ Gauze pads
♥ Tape
♥ Small scissors with rounded tips
♥ Tweezers
♥ Instant ice pack
♥ Bulb syringe for suctioning mucous from mouth or nose
♥ Injection syringe without the needle (to give liquid medication)
♥ Small flashlight

All of these things should fit neatly into a container that has a nice tight lid. This will help to keep everything clean and sterile no matter how long it is sitting on the shelf or in the car. It is also a good idea to have the name of the vet and his or her phone number right there on the lid so that even in a panic you will know what to do. You may even want to put the number of the local emergency animal hospital as well in case something happens early in the morning or late at night when the regular vets are all closed.

Bee stings are one of the most common of all dog injuries. It is important that you get the stinger out right away before an infection has time to set in. This will also help to minimize any pain that your dog may be in. If you have to, restrain your dog and then use the tweezers in the first aid kit to pull out the stinger. You can then wash the area with some lukewarm water and baking soda. This can help to take some of the nasty stinging away and easy the pain suffered by your dog.

Ice and Benadryl will also help to keep the pain and swelling to a minimum, just make sure that you ask the vet just how much Benadryl is enough for your dog. Just like kids it is important that dogs get the right dosage when they take medications.

Never rush an injured animal. While it may be your instinct to run over and start taking care of the injury, this may spook your dog and scared animals can get a little upset. You do not want to end up with an injury as well, do you? Of course not, so take your time and let the animal know that you want to help not harm.

About the Author:
John Rivers is the editor of Dog Food Specialists. It comes in two sizes (to accommodate anything from a Yorkie to a pair of Rottweilers), and — best of all — cleans up with a wipe of a damp cloth.

Okay, so the Fatboy dog bed is practical — you've got to like the easy-to-clean nylon material with a special coating, so no need to do a whole big laundry every time Rover gets sloppy with his bedtime treats.

And the inside filling is made of tiny EPS (expanded polystyrene) cylindrical packaging-type pieces. It comes fully stuffed, and you can adjust the firmness of the bed to suit your dog by removing some of the pellets, if desired.

But the real news is the trim and tailored style, and those rocking colors! (Also available in Camouflage print, not shown in the stack of dogs beds here.) Fido's sbed is poofy and frumpy no more.

♥ Fetch!

Fashion Dog

It's just one in a recent flurry of high-society events that capture the media interest and help to feed an on-going controversy about the dog fashion industry.

(Unfortunately, the debate does tend to overshadow all the charitable fund-raising that is associated with such doggie fashion shows — in this case, to aid the cause of Alzheimers research.)

Should people dress up their dogs?

Non-dog-owners whose opinions have been formed simply by tabloid TV shots of Paris Hilton in front of the camera, accessorized by her teacup pup, would deplore the idea of clothing animals.

Owners of rough-coated hardy breeds might well agree.

But those who live with and love the temperature-sensitive toy breeds, or have adopted lean and thin-coated greyhounds, for example, would argue that dog apparel serves a very real purpose. And there is no contesting the fact that the harsher climates do demand some additional protection for our dogs.

The question then becomes one of personal taste, surely?

If the dogs are happy and healthy, and comfortable in their clothing... Live and let live!

After all, some people do dress their human children in a ridiculous manner, too!
Fashion Dog

A personalized collar can help get your dog back home safely, if he or she gets lost.

For special breeds — for big powerful pullers like a Husky or Shepherd or Labrador, or for a dog with a muscular neck and narrow head like a Greyhound or Whippet, for example — there are other safety considerations in selecting a style of collar.

Here to help is Lee Dobbins' take on how to choose a personalized collar for your own dog... Oh, and my furry friend here in the photo is a chocolate lab mix named "Einstein"! He's not all that bright, but he's a happy dog!

Keeping Your Dog Safe and Chic with a Personalized Dog Collar
by: Lee Dobbins

If you want to keep your dog safe and at the same time stylish, then you might want to get your pooch a personalized dog collar. Dog tags are easy to fall off but personalized collars can be engraved with all useful information that would come in handy in case your pet gets lost or gets into an accident.

Hundreds of lost dogs were able to reunite with their owners just because their contact information were printed on their collar and such is reason enough for you to get your dog his or her own personalized collar.

What a Personalized Dog Collar Should Have

A good personalized do collar should be durable, non-toxic, easy to clean and good looking for your dog. You should be able to easily put information that can be used in the undesirable chance that your dog gets lost. Most importantly, the personalized collar should perfectly fit your dog; otherwise it would not be a personalized at all.

Materials for the Personalized Dog Collar

Most personalized dog collars are made of nylon or leather with either snap-on or buckled locks. Be sure to test snap-on closures because some of them might not securely be fastened to your dogs neck. Usually, larger dogs would need buckled personalized collars for more security.

Depending on your dog's breed and size, you may need to get an adjustable personalized dog collar so that it can grow with him or her as he or she grows from a puppy to a full-sized dog.

Some nylon dog collars can be woven with your pooch's name with your contact information. Others have metal tags that are attached as pendants with vital information engraved for reference purposes.

If you walk your dog at night, you might also want to get reflector or glow-in-the-dark materials. With such, you would be able to easily spot your dog in case it gets away during your night walks.

Choosing the Right Collar for Your Dog

When shopping for a personalized dog collar you have to bring your dog with you to have the collar fit. The collar should be loose enough for you to fit three fingers between the collar and the neck if your dog is large, two fingers if your dog is medium and one finger if your dog is small. If the personalized collar is too loose, it would easily slip off. Conversely, if the collar is too tight, it might choke your dog and cause gagging asphyxiation.

If you want to get a collar for training purposes, a personalized dog collar may not be a good choice since training needs different collar features. Consult a professional dog trainer about training collars.

You might want to look at personalized dog collars that can work with body harnesses, especially for toy dogs or puppies. With a body harness, you can pull the leash without risks of choking. Instead of tightening the neck, the harness would tighten around the chest, providing you with control without causing strain on your dog's back or neck.

Generally, leather is a good choice of material for the personalized dog collar because it is quite stylish and ages well. However if your dog is a chewer, leather might not be a good choice because leather can deteriorate with constant nibbling and moisture from saliva.

Whatever material for the personalized dog collar you choose, you should check it regularly, at least every month, to see if there are signs of damage due to chewing or other factors. Replace damaged collars immediately to make sure that it would not fall off easily from your dog.

Personalized dog collars are good for many reasons especially for safety and aesthetic purposes. Choose your dog's personalized collar well to ensure that your dog not only looks good but is kept safe all the time. Personalized dog collars are usually available at your leading pet shop or pets supplies store. You may also want to try out shopping for dog collars online.

Pet dogs are great companions and it just rightful to provide your pooch with safety as well as beauty. A personalized dog collar can provide these both. So grab one now!

About Author: Lee Dobbins writes for http://dogcollars.topicgiant.com where you can learn more about all types of dog collars including the personalized dog collar.
