Summer's Mint Juleps

Summer usually brings thoughts of ice tea, the pool, and lounging lazily on a hammock. But this summer's unbearable heat has brought nothing but dehydration and heat warnings, making it unsafe to even be outside for longer than a few minutes. Luckily, we have some very creative and persistent members here at Fashion Fix, determined to make the most of their summer. Here's how one member manage to take advantage of this summer's heat:

Michelle, as you know, works at a community garden on her free time, which offered up these colorful flowers!

Mint and basil leaves were in full bloom recently, and with an overflow of it, Michelle was able to gather a handful and guess what she did with them? She made mint juleps and invited us over to share the wealth!

This edemame/wasabi dip and fried wonton chip concoction was genius, not to mention delicious!

We hope you're enjoying your summer. And like these Vegas commercials on TV recently, we too believe that life is short, but summer is shorter! So we hope you find your own silver lining in this hot hot summer.

New Yorker on Capitol Hill: Street Festivals and Fundraisers

Last week, I traded my usual Saturday morning farming gig for an afternoon street festival and tabled at DC's First Farm-to-Table street fair, the closing number of Eat Local First Week. We showed up with an armada of beautiful produce from the farm to display: carrots, monster (over-grown) squash of all different varieties, fresh cut flowers. The event featured a number of restaurants that try to locally source their ingredients and stick to a seasonal menu, a lamb roast, two pie eating contests, a dunk tank, and of course a section for urban agriculture and other food-related organization, including Common Goods City Farm, City Blossoms and of course the garden I volunteer at, the Neighborhood Farm Initiative!

I had indeed, spent part of the morning at the farm up in Fort Totten, harvested some of our bounty to put on display, and took a quick bike ride down 14th Street to the street festival. It really was a full day of farm-related activities, but the perfect afternoon to spend outside! Between the massive cucumbers and zucchinis, the flower display, and our box of free seeds, we got a lot of interest! It's energizing to see so many people excited about our little urban agriculture project, about growing their own food, and eating in a responsible manner! I hope this isn't just a fleeing trend among DC's yuppies.

I've also been heavily involved with planning NFI's third annual film fundraiser. I now have a much healthier respect for people who plan these events (even more so than I did before - which was a lot to begin with!?). The myriad of things that I never thought of before but requires my attention: press releases, guest lists, cutlery, media passes...

Luckily, I have the help of the other fabulous volunteers.

It's been fun, but a lot of work - e-mails back and forth coordinating the logistics. Fundraising committee meetings, thinking about how to get food, how to store the food, what to do with the food, etc, etc, etc...

So farm, we have a venue, starting to ramp up on publicity. Still trying to glean some food from local farmer's markets in addition to the harvest feast we'll have, procuring wine donations (if anyone has suggestions for this, that would be wonderful!).

August 11, it will all come together, with a wonderfully hilarious movie, Truck Farm, about a Brooklynite who finds a clever answer to his desire to grow his own food and lack of...space: the back of his 1986 Dodge Truck, a wonderful line-up of speakers, rooftop garden tours, DC's very own truck farm, good food, good company.

Tickets are available here for $20 and all proceeds to go benefit the Neighborhood Farm Initiative.

New Yorker on Capitol Hill - Uncharted Territories

Our lovely little farmer's market stand

One of the things I miss most about New York is the vast array of different neighborhoods, each with their own personality and flavor, making it perfect to explore for an urban adventurer such as myself. However, urban adventurers also have to have street smarts - do research before hand to make sure you don't wander into the wrong neighborhoods. Know your boundaries, in terms of where you feel comfortable roaming and the actual physical boundaries.

When I came to DC, people told me to stay in the Northwest quadrant. I could occasionally venture to parts of SE - around Eastern Market and maybe to the burgeoning H Street neighborhood -- but only at my own risk because it's still sort of wild and uncharted terriories.

I ended up making weekly homages to Northeast to visit the community garden. This past weekend (through the farm) I found myself deep in Southeast, in the part of Southeast that DC young professional yuppies dare not venture: into Anacostia.

Instead, what I found there on a Saturday morning was a tiny farmer's market, families looking for ways to make a healthy dinner on a budget, and a community! The Ward 8 farmer's market, newly relocated to the Arc, is right in the middle of the Ward 8 food desert and in a lower-income area of DC. Food deserts are defined as areas where residents do not have easy access to health food options, and tend to coincide with low-income areas. Food deserts are determined based upon the number of super markets (proxy for access to fresh fruits and vegetables) and car ownership, significantly lower among lower-income residents. Ward 8 is an example of a food desert within the District.

Honestly, I was apprehensive at first. What's a small Asian moderately priviledged Asian girl doing in a rough neighborhood of DC? Luckily I got a ride there. The morning started up slow. I was tabling for the Neighborhood Farm Initiative trying to recruit gardens to our Fort Totten garden. The market - with 1 produce stand, 1 bread stand, and 1 fruit stand, was nearly empty. People slowly trickled in and we got a few inquisitive looks, and when we pressed people a bit more, they seemed to shy away from the thought of gardening. "I'm too young for that" one elderly woman joked to us.

I was also feeling moderately guilty, because we had originally planned to have a kale salad demonstration, but I left the dressing that I made the night before for the demo in the fridge, and forgot utinsels to mix the salad and the serving cups... The show must go on, so with some quick improvizing, we ended up cutting up the carrots from the garden, intended to garnish the salad, and gave that away instead.

However, things slowly picked up. We got a total of 7 e-mail addresses for our newsletter, but we had numerous othe conversations with people who had gardens, and eagarly encouraged us and wished us luck with our communty garden. We had a few inquiries for how to start more gardens in Ward 8, an area that desperately needs them; community gardens are one of the grassroot answers to the complex problem of food deserts. We had visits from families. It was exicting to see kids chomp down the carrots and comment to us that they thought it tasted delicious -- particularly rewarding since food deserts are often correlated to areas with higher rates of obesity (which makes sense if, instead of stopping by the market for vegetables, you buy dinner from a corner store, shelves filled with loads highly processed sugary foods). One little girl gobbled down 3 carrots and asked us what our favorite vegetables are.

It was amazing to watch the strong sense of community that this market elicits. Families made the trek here specifically to do their grocery shopping. The Ward 8 market's does as much as possible to make the food as accessible as possible, including doubling the value of SNAP, EBT and WIC vouchers. The market manager was extremely helpful in explaining how to use the vouchers, and made rounds to ensure that people received their vouchers. As I mingled with the vendors, I couldn't help but notice their willingness to help out the customers, throwing in an extra piece of squash, selling half pints of cherries to someone who didn't have enough to cover the cost of a whole pint. Prices of the produce were very reasonable. I struck up conversation with the elderly farmer and his brother who helped him with his produce stand. An elderly woman explained to me how to prepare pattypan squash and green tomatoes. She added that she only wished that it hadn't taken her 50 years to realize the benefits of eating fresh vegetables, but that she's glad she did.

While I do love the Dupont farmer's market, the dense flock of yuppies make it difficult to navigate, and A-type personalities demanding "give me a half a pound of arugula" make it difficult to amble through unencombered and talk to the farmers. Farmer's marekts are a place for communities to develop, for various people to stop and chat, both with each other and to the farmers. The Ward 8 farmer's market was refreshing. Here, the farmer's market really did make a difference - eating locally is undoubtly better for the environment - but these people were also taking a stand for their health. Here, children love and appreciate carrots. Here, people talk and mingle, exchange recipes. Here, I hope that the Ward 8 farmer's market will make a difference. As uncharted territories for me, it made an impression on me.

"You have to do it even if you don't want to"

Those are words from a young boy, not more than 10 years old and a survivor of leukemia, and inspiration even to the "toughest" adults.

I had the pleasure of accompanying Kim to the D*C* Design for a Cure: Nicole Miller and K Street Lounge Leukiemia & Lymphoma Society benefit event. It was a wonderful night of fashion cloture, philanthropy, and most of all inspiration. It was a night to honor those brave survivors of lymphoma and leukemia, including some who sashayed down the runway in some stunning Nicole Miller ensembles.

However, the stars of the night were Ryan and Molly, the LLS Girl and Boy of the Year. They and their moms got dressed up to the nines and had an opportunity to strut down the runway. Ryan even pulled out his "signature" dance move to open up the event.

As the glamorous lights dimmed, and the hype closely came to an end, Ryan and Molly are just normal kids: leery-eyed by the end of the night, way past their bed times. Molly didn't seem to understand the fuss of having her hair curled, and Ryan was absolutely thrilled to run around backstage, surrounded by all the models getting prepped for the runway. Molly's losing her baby teeth and so far, the tooth fairy has been good to her.

They just happen to have an incredible amount of fortitude to battle cancer. I'm constantly amazed at how children seem to be the ones best able to handle adversity. We adults may think that we're weathered with our battle scars from life, but childhood innocence can offer us lessons in how we choose to lead our lives and how we face difficult situtations.

DC Design for a Cure: Nicole Miller at K Street Lounge to benefit Leukeumia & Lymphoma Society

What sets the DC party scene apart from the rest of the country's? When we party, we party for a good cause! DC philanthropist and LLS Woman of the Year 2011 nominee, Glenda Fu, mixed fashion and philanthropy at K Street Lounge this past Wednesday as part of her campaign to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS).

D*C* Design for a Cure was an amazing event that was just as trendy as it was touching. Emceed by HOT 99.5's Sarah Fraser, the evening's show featured the latest designs from fashion house Nicole Miller, who sent beautiful, colorful dresses, skirts, and shirts down the runway on professional models as well as cancer survivors and their family members.

Molly and Ryan, the LLS Girl and Boy of the Year, as well as survivors Carol Cronin, Chartese Burnett and DJ SAAM, to name but a few, received standing ovations as they confidently shimmied and sashayed down the runway in style!

Sarah Fraser from HOT99.5 was the lovely (and lively!) emcee of the evening's inspiring show.

It was absolutely refreshing to conversate and connect with so many good hearts who were all there for an extremely good cause.

We spotted bold summer colors, cute prints and accessories, as well as a patriotic bow-tie!

As the ten-week LLS's Man and Woman of the Year Campaign comes to an end tomorrow, culminating in a Grand Finale Gala held at the Ritz-Carlton, Fashion Fix sends its very best wishes and congratulations to our friend Glenda and the rest of the candidates for pouring so much energy, love, and passion to help the lives of blood cancer patients and their families. You are all winners in our book!

DC Biking

My trusty red commuter bike

Try as it might, DC Metros just aren't that reliable – not to mention a money guzzler without an unlimited option. Every time I swipe my SmartTrip at the turnstile, I watch the balance on my card plummet. Thank goodness it’s air conditioned, and has real-time train schedules… It’s a catalyst, though, for me to explore other transportation options.

I discovered biking – not as a form of leisurely enjoyment in the park like when I was a kid, or as a form of exercise and competition – but as a form of transportation: commuter biking. This is something I never dared to do on the street of Manhattan, with the wide 4+ lane avenues and aggressive and at times bellicose taxi drivers. The yellow taxis are iconically New York, but a nightmare for any commuter biker. DC’s smaller city feel lends itself well to biking: streets aren’t as wide (which makes making left turns much easier), bike lanes, and a plethora of smaller neighborhood streets.

Biking has given me a new set of wings! I’m no longer tied to the metro system’s 15-minute/ train schedule. I’m no longer trapped underground in a fortified cement tunnel. I’m no longer limited only to the path that the metro lines follow. On a bike, I’m on my own schedule, I make my own route, and I can capture and savor the sights around me.

For someone new to the District, biking presents a wonderful opportunity to discover the city, street by street. Armed with my trusty smart phone and google maps (including the beta version of bike routes), I map different routes to and from my destination. More than just exploring neighborhoods, I can comb through them block by block on my bike, turning down a different street each time. I’ve discovered new neighborhoods, experienced the unique character of each, from the tree-lined streets of Mount Pleasant to the upscale majesty of Constitution Ave (not to mention an absolutely sick bike lane). I’ve added items to my ever-growing DC bucket list (Room 11 in Columbia Heights and The Passenger near Mt. Vernon are the newest additions). What will I see at the next intersection? What new gem will I discover on the next block?

Biking is good for the adventurous spirit; biking is good for the earth; biking is good for the body. While a car is a must for escapes from the District, it’s really unnecessary to use a car to commute within the District (and its neighboring outskirts), and even more unnecessary to drive 4 or 5 miles, most of that time spent sitting in a idling car spitting out exhaust and burning fossil fuels. Biking has allowed me to cut down my reliance on fossil fuels in favor of my own fuel – of which I have an abundance and like others working at a desk job, could definitely benefit from using more of this fuel. Hills – even the “gentle” and “small” hills are much more noticeable on a bike. Biking is a mix of perspiration from pumping my legs up the hills and the refreshing breeze as I coast downhill.

Ivy goes to Shake Shack

Ivy took a break from her food truck adventures to try out the irresistible Shake Shack. We don't blame her.

The burger is one of the most popular America food item. You can find it everywhere from food trucks at the corner of a business district, tailgate parties in front of a stadium to fine dining restaurants. Burgers are very rare in that they can please people from all different ages and all different nationalities.

The burger is indeed easy to make; therefore, it takes more work, hard work to stand out and differ from others. One burger restaurant has been a favorite place for a lot of people who happily wait in line to enjoy the one of a kind goody.

Mini Profile Shake Shack wooed New Yorkers in 2004 and immediately became one of the best burger joints in New York. Shake Shack has expanded its business to other states such as Connecticut, Florida and even Middle East.

Finally Shake Shack isn’t letting the Capital’s fine people wait any longer. It opened opened its door last week and shared its famous burgers with DC.

The restaurant is located at the most crowded business district in DC – Dupont Circle. The location is very convenient since it’s just few blocks away from Farragut North, Farragut West and Dupont Circle metro stations.

After hearing all the great feedback about Shake Shack, I decided to try out this burger although I’m on diet for summer shape. Yes, I’m a girl J. I got to the place around 7:00 pm, and the line was already half block away from the store. I was thinking this burger better be worth my time. After a quick interview with people around me, I found out that Shake Stack was the must-have burger; therefore, I decided to get it for my dinner.

Shake Stack: $8.75 “Cheeseburger with ‘Shrooms, topped with lettuce, tomato and Shacksauce.” The meat is rounded-cut, thick, but very tender and juicy. When I bite it, I believe I was in heaven for 5 seconds. The cheese is also very thick but not greasy, just perfect to make me happy. The mushrooms are amazing. I think the cheese and the mushroom make a huge difference for Shack Stack. They help to reduce the taste of oil in the meat and add a little sweet taste to the burger that make you want to come back for more.

I still couldn’t believe that I finished the entire Shack Stack within three minutes, and I did scare the guys next to me. J

If you are in the city and close to Dupont Circle, don’t forget to check out Shake Shack !!! I can’t wait to go back there for my next burger/dinner.

Ivy's Food Truck Adventures: Wonky Food Truck

Mini Profile Although Eat Wonky’s menu is quite simple and affordable in price, they really make the best out of the simplest ingredients.

Signature dish: Wonky’s Dogs $6 Hot dogs are a very common item on the menu of most food trucks in DC. What makes Wonky’s dogs the BEST in DC, as rated by the Washingtonian? The hot dogs are made of 100% beef, well cooked, very juicy and not salty like the average hot dog. More than that, the gravy makes the hot dogs tastier.

Signature dish: Wonky’s Fries $5.50 The well-cut French fries are served with “squeaky cheese” and gravy. This very unique combination surprises me. The “squeaky cheese” makes the fries less salty but still crunchy. The gravy keeps the dish from being dry and adds little bit of sweetness.

The portion is perfect for lunch/ dinner. The service is very friendly.

*Don’t forget to try the Whoopie Pies ($3) which were also voted the BEST in DC by Washingtonian.

The difference between the Traditional and Connecticut rolls is that the first is served cold with homemade mayo, and the second is served warm with butter. The Connecticut roll is my favorite. The warm lobster is served with butter and warm toasted roll.

*Both rolls are also served with lemon and cucumber, but I don’t think you need them at all since the rolls are already amazing.

The Shrimp Roll

Shrimp Roll $8 For only $8 bucks, you can get a warm roll stuffed full of tasty fresh shrimps. The shrimps are served cold with special seasoning; therefore, they are very tasty. I believe that the shrimp roll is very similar with the lobster roll traditional style. RHLP does a great job to take the shrimp roll to the next level, and I promise you will have to come back for more.

*Also don’t forget to check out the yummy soup and other side dishes on the menu.

Tips: The best way to catch this yummy food truck and avoid a long line ( the waiting time can go up to 2 hours), is to follow the team on Twitter and/or Facebook. If the team announces to arrive at a location around 11:30 am, make sure you reserve your spot at 11:15. I was literally waiting the truck to parallel park and the line was already really long. Definitely take advantage of rainy days because the line is way shorter. Nothing can stop us from pleasing our hungry tummy.

Bonus Points: They take major credit cards, so you don’t have to bring cash. They also launched a second lobster truck, so you should be able to catch them easier.

Our fashionable First Lady of the White House, Michelle Obama, has always made fashion headlines with her amazing fashion sense. Mrs. Obama has demonstrated that she is equally as socially conscientious when it comes to what she wears by confirming that she does not wear real fur. In response and support for the First Lady's honorable stance, this past week PETA gifted her a faux leather jacket from ASOS.com (one of our favorite online shopping sites).

Sweet Charity

On April 25th, 2010, The Heart of America Foundation® hosted their annual Sweet Charity event at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Washington, DC to a slew of fashionable Washingtonians, to support child literacy.

The event featured over 50 of our Nation Capital's best chef's, demonstrating their dessert flair at tasting stations. In addition, chef's transformed chocolate creations into works of wearable art, as models displayed the couture food-art during the Des Alpes Chocolate Fashion Show portion of the evening.

Judges awarded Chef Shaun McCarty of the International Trade Center with the best costume of the evening! His "Gretel" outfit was modeled by Caitlin of the Washington Wizard Girls. 11 chefs took part in the Des Alpes Chocolate Fashion Show and created outfits from edible goodies.
Models took to the runway and displayed their "Heroes in Literature" characters.

A Thousand Words

Rebekah Benson of the Capital Breast Care Center

Shoot for Change and Pink Jams recently hosted an exhibit called A Thousand Words, featuring 100 Washiongtonites who have be personally touched by breast cancer, among them were also breast cancer survivors. All proceeds benefited the Capital Breast Care Center.

The exhibit featured simple black and white portraits of each subject holding up a sign about how breast cancer has touched their lives.

The event had overwhelming attendance, proving that breast cancer truly does affect us all. By supporting the Capital Breast Care Center, you are helping women who do not have access to health care or medical support gain complimentary comprehensive breast cancer services, in which they would otherwise never get.
