Why should one do make-up workshop?

Not for purely vanity reasons. Make-up is more than looking beautiful but it has been used widely to raise self-eteem and confidence. And women who feel good about themselves proved to be better in their performances in both career and interpersonal relationships.

Why would I want to go to a make-up workshop?

As a photographer and a blogger, socializing and client calls are necessary. I have learned in my past experiences that people do measure you in terms of how you look. Sloppy make-up or no make-up at all makes you look inefficient and unprofessional. Upon learning, I groomed myself to look the professional that I am and noticed that people are more at ease and more comfortable with me and what I can do.

I know I am good, so I initially felt that I need not put extra effort in how I look..because, people hire me for my skills. Wrong. At a conference that I attended, one of the major factors that people fail in offering their services is because they fail in impression management. If you don't look efficient, you are most likely to be thought of as inefficient.

The thing is, you can control what you think of yourself, but you cannot control the thoughts of people surrounding you.

Like for example when applying for a job...In the interview, they size you up the moment you come in. And the first impressions you give will tend to condition the mind of employer during the interview. If you look sloppy and plain, you will that you have to work twice as hard to convince the interviewer that you are worth their time. In these type of scenarios (and similar to this), perception,most often than not, becomes reality.

There are a few exceptional individuals of course...unfortunately, I am one ladder below them...so I have to kick ass to prove to other people that I am worth their money. But before I could kick their asses, I have to put my foot on the door to stop it from closing...and that is by packaging myself correctly.

Personally also, I find myself more confident in asserting when discussing a project...maybe because when I'm all made-up, I kinda look credible *tee hee ^.^

My first attempts in make-up is disastrous. I highlighted the wrong features and ended up scaring everyone. Make-up lessons were not available in my turf then...so I ended up experimenting and experimenting -----and experiencing humiliation after another that it became a private joke between me and my mom. Not a very long one though, my mom owned a salon so that embarrassing moment of my life did not last long :P But it was expensive. She had to hire me a personal beautician for all the parties and events that I need to attend...she had the money...but I don't... so I have to learn quickly.

The one thing I was very scared of to do wrong was shape my eyebrows incorrectly. Clean eyebrows equals a clean face. Bushy eyebrows is not very flattering...it makes the most attractive women look unattractive and plain...in some cases masculine. Too thin eyebrows creates false expressions. Eyebrows arched incorrectly is just plain disastrous... do you get my point? so be careful with your eyebrows, it's the one feature that actually defines your face.

My mom would always say that make-up is not about trying to be someone that you are not. It supposed to bring out the best in you...unless you're in theater. The face is our primary tool in communication, and just like we choose the best dress, best gadgets, write the best letters, choose the best selections to represent us; we should groom our face properly and appropriately, because its the only face people will look at and associate us with.

The dilemma always is that when one tends to be beautiful one tends to wish for people to overlook the beauty to find something interesting in the person. That one has characteristics and skills beyond the physical. But most of the time people will only bother to dig deeper than what they see is when they look at an attractive face.

Everyone is becoming fond of Soul Lifestyle, it seems, so when I got invited to their opening in Abreeza, I decided to check them out. I was with Tessa of Fashion Facile and Ria of Shoppingera.net.

I've been to their Soul Lifestyle in Gmall Bajada and have always loved the quirky way they display their stuff...their clothes are unique as well. Actually, my one fave black dress was from Soul.

What to expect in Soul.

If you are a career woman or a young professional who loves solid colors in stylish shapes and cuts, Soul is for you. They have limited selections in print, but the best items, for me, would be the ones that you can stylishly wear in and and out of the office or during a client call. The cut of the dresses available are unique, not revealing, but the way it drapes to your body spells sexy but not cheap. It means you can be in your work clothes without having to look drab. The usual clientele I see inside the shop are businesswomen, artists, and women in their mid to late 20's and above. Mostly women who needs versatile clothes...

The store ambiance in Abreeza is actually very nice...posh to be exact. Bigger than the store in gmall but not big enough to lose intimacy. I think that's what department stores lack, with it's too bright lights and endless racks of clothes with countless women carelessly browsing, looking for what they think they need.

My trusty lappy is on its way to retirement. The battery just failed and I managed to add more injury by breaking the power button. Since February, I've been looking for an apt replacement. Because I'm always traveling to do shoots, I'm mainly rooting for something light and thin without having to look geeky. Something my make-up artist friend would look at and appreciate. Well, I may drive a truck-- but I'm still a girl.

And I think I just got my prayers answered.

Samsung just launched its sexiest notebook, the Samsung Notebook Series 9. The launching was last March 22 at the Peninsula Hotel. What's more interesting is that famous fashion designers like Rajo Laurel, Randy Otiz, an Rhett Eala showcased their latest collection inspired by the new notebook. Coolness. I've never heard of a gadget being launched in a fashion show before.

Dubbed as sophisticated and promoted for its sexiness, Samsung Notebook Series 9 has a screen size of 13 inches. The notebook is 16.33mm with a weight of 1.31kg. It boasts of Samsung's LED technology(SuperBright Plus) display with a 16million color reproduction. This means the notebook is 80% brighter than any other notebooks available.

Spring Theme: Loungerie for S/S 2011

Loungerie - Lingerie as outer wear. Remember Jennifer Garner's "13 going on 30" movie? Recall the scene where she jumped out of the bed disoriented in her nighties and found herself on the street and her BFF found her in her Silk Lingerie and commented that it is so whatever year? Yep, that one. Look for that one or dresses similar to it. 2011 is all about silk and laces, and lingerie apparently is the mother queen of anything smooth, silky and lacey-- not to mention "see through"...and designers are bringing it on the street.

I'm wondering if a corset would be a trend, so far, I haven't seen one. Most of the stuff I've noticed are flowy and sheer dresses...but with the biker/punk chic theme, a corset might just pull the trick for ladies like me who needs to be "bound" for our curves to show. Unlike the super slim supermodels, I'd be better off with a simple and plain---and maybe a sheer tee and a corset on top of it. does it fit the 70's theme? A corset with lace and ruffles? I remember seeing a guess? ad with the model wearing a corset...it is definitely gaining momentum...just have to wait the first brave souls to try it, then we, stupid people, can follow hehehe.

But Loungerie theme is all about being soft (ehem, corset might be in a different spring category), with a hint of nostalgia. It communicates intimacy and eternal seduction without being overtly sexual. There are women who are just ravishing in the morning...

In terms of color, Spring 2011 is definitely all about freshness -- brights and whites.

LEAVE it to fashionistas to try on new buzzwords like they’re going out of style. Whether it was our bromance with heritage brands, or the shellacking that some collaborations took, 2010 saw no shortage of P.R.-driven catchphrases and trendy terms. As with all fads, it’s time to put some to rest.

Couture: Calling something “couture” doesn’t make it hand-sewn or high class. Yet the word popped up everywhere last year, from discount Web sites to Canal Street pushcarts. It’s even uttered repeatedly on HSNand QVC to describe handbags, dresses and almost anything else. You can trust that the rayon and polyester cape selling for $49.95 was not hand-stitched by petite seamstresses in a Parisian atelier.

Bespoke: A close runner-up to “couture.” Used by retailers to make their merchandise seem classier, although the items in question are not literally made to order.

Statement outfits: Does your clothing speak louder than words? That seemed to be the mantra chanted by fashion lemmings, who kept referring to attention-grabbing pieces as “statements.”

Smoldering: O.K., your makeup is hot. Your outfit is hotter. You are about to combust. We get it.

Pop-up: It was the year of the pop-up store — Shiseido and AllSaints had them, as did Zimmermann swimwear in SoHo and Liberty of London for Target. Blame it on empty storefronts and skittish retailers, but the hit-and-run retail concept swept the world’s fashion capitals, to the point of losing its novelty.

Fashionista: The word has gone from describing a class of urban style-conscientious sophisticates to becoming a lazy and cheap byword for anyone with a modicum of taste. (See “hipster.”)

Collaborations: H&M and Alber Elbaz; Gap and Stella McCartney; Jason Wu and Tse; Opening Ceremony and [insert name here]. Collaborations went gaga in 2010, making it seem as if solo designing were a thing of the past.

Concept store: Used to describe any store that deviated in the slightest from the norm, whether it was Ann Taylor’s “concept store” in the Flatiron district that featured 10 design finalists, or the OC Concept Store on Madison Avenue that sells watches and yachts. But aren’t all stores supposed to have a concept? Just checking.

Geek-chic: If geeks rule the world, it was only a matter of time before they conquered fashion. In 2010, anyone who sported thick-framed glasses, cardigans and T-shirts with nerdy references was instantly labeled “geek-chic.” The hip-to-be-square term has also become a popular Twitter hashtag. #done.

Eco-fashion: Stella McCartney made vegan platform shoes out of faux leather and cork;Michael Kors used organic cashmeres and cottons in his resort collection. Responsible design never gets old, but this term has.

D.I.Y. fashion: It’s not always necessary to knit your own mittens. And not everyone becomes a best seller on Etsy.com. Save your sanity by going to Urban Outfitters and spending the $8.

Heritage: Waxed Barbour jackets. Red Wing boots. Woolrich sweaters. Classic Americana ruled men’s runways in 2010 — and the cash registers at retail behemoths like J. Crew. But perhaps the only thing more played out than another lumberjack-chic man with a candy-colored ax was this word, trotted out to label the retro-trend.

Well-edited: This replaced “curated” to describe any collection chosen with a sharp eye. Stay tuned for this year’s word: culled.

Mash-up: Used to describe looks that blend multiple influences, as in, “The designer’s spring collection is a mash-up of Upper East Side girl and Harajuku girl on Valium,” or “Her aesthetic is a mash-up of East meets West.” Designers have always drawn upon their imagination and varied cultural references, so the term is superfluous.

Once seen as a connotation of luxury. It is hard to keep maintain dresses with tassles...they usually tangle with something else... probably not for me...hehe

Bell Bottoms

skinny jeans is still in fashion, FYI-- actually it has become a standard

but flare pants is baaaaccckkk!!!! *grins

Tail Hems

Choose the playful hem cut at an angle. Or the one that has a traditional petal hem where the fabric overlaps like flowers... I personally dresses and tops that have odd cuts...I don't know why...maybe for one thing, it looks...odd (?) *hehe

1970s Glam

Get that Vintage Vibe. There will be less buying but more spending on this one. Meaning more on quality and less on the bland. Innocent sexy aura -- demure looks paired with exotic jewels and thin heled boots or super high platforms... The theme is here is sexy independence not arrogance.

According to Fashionizing these are the things to watch out for to don this look

High waisted wide-leg pants or flares, smartly belted in.
Neat bow-blouses, especially ones with billowing or bishop sleeves. Particularly great are fabrics like silk and satin.
Roll neck sweaters tucked into pants or skirts. Add to the '70s effect by layering over beaded necklaces or a vest.
For those more daring, a pair of hot pants are the ultimate '70s item.
A smart printed jumpsuit is another great alternative.
Choose high sheen fabrics with a '70s disco-inspired edge, like lurex or silk; anything with a metallic thread.
Add a ruffled neckline under a brocade blazer or tuxedo jacket, paired with a sharp pair of pants.
Long, slinky gowns with draping, low necklines or dress slits are the ultimate in '70s night time glamour.
The right handbag completes a look. Try for smart, high quality bags like a leather satchel for day, and a small bag with a long strap for night.
Big, statement leather belts slung over mini skirts or maxi dresses add impact and fair to a seventies-inspired outfit.

I am particularly pleased with this. Love brando biker jackets...Fashion experts said that in 2011, the clean elegant black can be substituted for different colors -- anyone seen a two-toned leather jacket? *looking for years now. Also expect statement biker jackets with zipped jacket sleeves, subtle quilting, and other metal stud accents to come out. The theme here is sexy and tough.

Aside from the jacket, tight hugging leather biker pants is also nice to have but a skirt with biker detailing can also be a good alternative.Yep, tight hugging pants in black need not be the standard-- I live in the tropics, so for this I will go for the skirt. Biker Chic is all about details. details.details.

Also, expect the market to flood with biker boots.

All in all, to exude the correct biker chic look, go for the Glam rock feel - studs, zips, moulded-patent leather. No you don't have to look as if you will ride a bike...and it need not be all black. Play with gold, silver...But yes, black is a classic, I'd still go for black but might pair it with colorful silk mini dresses or the lacy ones I have stocked up ^.^

Punk Rock

This is a nice one...the-devil-may-care-look --whehehe.

One has to be be careful though, this style is the one style you don't want to get wrong. Overdo it and it looks as if you are attending a goth cosplay. The best way to wear punk is to incorporate it with other styles. Like the biker chic or ultra feminine look with a punk edge.

The core essence of punk rock is rebellion and controversy...and unless you have the confidence to be the particularly isolated -- fashion wise, as only a few don this, I suggest you start not with clothing but with painting your nails black. The idea is to be a deviant, a rebel...in 2011 it seems as if the punk rock trend has come to a full blown. But this doesn't mean it is wise to use this as an overall theme. This one is more of a mix and match to create an edge.

Punk rock elements: skull, safety pins, skinny leather pants, metal studs

1960's the Housewife and the Bombshell

Nope, not the minis in the late sixties but the feminine and elegant full blown skirt, sheath skirts and dresses that housewives from the 1950s to early 1960s wear. As with the skirts, make it effortless and surprisingly sexy by wearing a sheer top or a sexy fitting blouse paired with high heels -- or go for its authentic shoe pair, the flats (or kitten heels).

Fashionizing recommends:

Look for skirts that are straight, high waisted, below knee with a kick pleat or slit at the back.
You can also look for fitted sheath dresses. These are great sleeveless or with classic three-quarter sleeves.
The peg-top skirt is another alternative - full at the waist with small darts or pleats, and tapering narrowly to the hem.
Follow Dries Van Noten's lead for the ultimate in effortless modernising of the '60s full skirt. Throw over a boyfriend blazer with a turned up collar, or a souchy sporty sweat top, and slip on a pair of on-trend sunglasses.

Try the same silhouettes but with a shorter hemline, such as above the knee or shorter.
Add a pair of knee high socks that can just be seen below the hemline.
Look for pieces in fabrics like leather or sheer tulle for an edgy update on the look.

You have to be lean enough to wear this though. Extra pounds can be stressful to you toes. Yes, toes. Walking in high heels, to be graceful, means to tip-toe. That's why proper posture must be executed or you lose your balance. However if you want to wear high heels, with heels or none, but posture is a problem, do Pilates, it does great wonders on your posture (and sex life)...firms you up also.

These high heels with no heels is not recommended for newbies...I suggest you start with a wedge...baby steps first darling ^.^

We had the EFA last night and was so thankful the Zerdon and Amanda VS was there to assist me in setting up the place and putting things in order. I was happy to see Sir Seth cruise in whilst we prepare. I thought he was just there to take photos but surprise! surprise! he took the time to be in the workshop till it ended. Angie have been raving about Sir Seth, we are so glad he was able to attend *clap clap clap.

Our resource speaker for that night is another empowered filipina, Ms. Mae Fe Ancheta Templa. She is one of the strongest women I've known. She was actually my first executive director in my first job in an NGO years before. It was generous of her to attend even if she was informed in short notice. She is currently Kyabaan's managing director.

The girls who attended last night were all beautiful. It was exciting to see that they have come to the workshop with the goal to make themselves better. The value of beauty as it all started starts from the physical but Tita Mae Fe encouraged them to look at their self concept if they are already at the stage beyond the physical concept of one's self and if they are not, are they ready to leap?

I'm glad to hear them say yes.

The Dubai-based, Filipino designer is headlining this year’s biggest charity gala.

Furne One 10.10.10. will be held at the Makati Shangri-La Hotel on Sunday, October 10, 2010 at 10:30am. Tickets are P1500 each and proceeds will go to Bantay Kalikasan's "Kapit Bisig sa Ilog Pasig"program.

Tessa Prieto-Valdes and Kaye Tinga have once again joined efforts to chair a third fashion-driven, charity gala. The events of the previous two years have proven to be successful—Rajo Laurel’s show in 2008 enabled them to buy an ambulance for the Makati branch of the Philippine National Red Cross, while the funds raised from Dennis Lustico’s gala in 2009 helped to jumpstart the Taguig branch of the organization. For “First of One–A Fashion Collection by Furne One,” which will be held on October 9, 2010, 7:00 p.m., at the Makati Shangri-La Hotel, the duo are hoping to raise up to two million pesos for various charities.

The Beneficiaries

Majority of the funds earned (about 75% according to Tessa and Kaye) are already earmarked for the Philippine National Red Cross-Rizal Chapter. The rest will be disbursed to various charities under the umbrella of the Assumption High School Batch 1981 Foundation. Among the causes specially mentioned is raising awareness about Cervical Cancer, which will also involve donating 30-100 free vaccines (about P15,000 for a set) to women who cannot afford it.

In the same way that they were able to help raise an additional P1,000,000 for “Ondoy” relief efforts last year, the two are also planning to raise additional funds in support of Bantay Kalikasan’s campaign to clean up the Pasig river, by staging a second fashion show the day after the gala. This will be open to the public and proceeds from the ticket sales will be donated to the environmental organization.

Defining Beauty: Symmetry

Everybody wants to be beautiful.

Regardless of what they say, one wants to have a pleasant appeal to other people they interact with. Although some are quite obsessed to wanting to have the perfect face, most of us are quite contented with having a face to flaunt without the chance of traumatizing someone -- be it us or the nosy bystander.

But before we yank beauty products and go to hair salons, it is essential to understand, what makes one beautiful. And no, it's not the make up, it's not the glossy shimmer, nor is it the inner glow of goodness pouring out of us (but that is an extra point in our character *smiles).

Beauty must be understood as something beyond make up and clothes.

The Ancient greeks somewhat grappled on this as they celebrate beauty and even basked in their intoxication of this. Remember Helen of Troy? She was not celebrated for her kindness nor generosity...not even for her intellect, but the greeks put up toasts on her physical beauty (they often refer to as perfection) that would put our most extravagant parties to shame.

But the question is...what makes her so beautiful?

Plato wrote an answer to this conundrum -- the golden proportions.

"The width of an ideal face would be 2/3 its length, while a nose would be no longer than the distance between the eyes."

It's proper to give credence to the Greeks' attempt to find the fundamental proportions of beauty --but this is only partially correct. Modern Science has given a proper name to what the greeks are looking for -- SYMMETRY -- but not merely with proportions but with similarity between left and right.

Notice how you look weird if your eyebrows are not of the same shape or if your brows are arched differently. So scrap the "beauty is in the eye of the beholder crap". Symmetry is actually what we are looking for when we look at other people. Symmetry is the factor that makes one attractive regardless of how they are dressed or made up. Symmetry is that one thing we are attracted to but cannot point our finger at because it is something that is not blatantly and screamingly obvious even if it is one of the fundamental defining factors that shapes one's looks. Studies shows that babies stare most at faces of symmetric individuals.

According to a University of Louisville study, when shown pictures of different individuals, Asians, Latinos, and whites from 13 different countries all had the same general preferences when rating others as attractive -- that is those that are the most symmetric. - Charles Feng

What does this tell us?

Before picking the right color pallete, the correct foundation, look in the mirror first and find what is not balanced in your face. Check if your eyebrows are arched correctly and most importantly, arched similarly. Check your cheekbones if one is higher than the other and learn how to put on blush or bronzer that will create an effect of a more symmetrical face Your nose, your lips, your teeth... and invest in beauty products that will help you put these in symmetry.

Find a hairstyle that complements your facial bone structure. Choose a shade of lipstick that will not overpower your eyes if you have a strong pair. Learn how to put on make up that is complimentary. Figure out what is more symmetrical in your face and accentuate it.

Beauty in ancient times have also been associated with balance. And the "symmetry research" asserts this belief. You must learn to find your balance. So you have to be careful.

Do not over-correct your face, or you would end up looking even more weird.

I'm not saying that you hop in on the next surgical safari.

Symmetry creates balance and defines beauty but little imperfections create personality. A little askew here and there will not make you ugly...so don't obsessed with having the perfect face...remember, the greeks are only partially correct. Symmetry is one of the crucial foundations of being attractive...but does not define the totality of beauty.

Build your beauty regimen and experiment with what you have rather than treat make up like painting on a blank canvass. Your face has it all...all you have to do, as they say in jewelry making, is embellish it. Stop looking for what is not in your face, but rather try to enhance the good and accentuate your facial assets.

A stubby nose is not inferior to a long one, an almond pair of eyes is not more beautiful than the chinky pair. Thin lips is as good as the pouty ones. Work with what you have and you would be surprise to find that you posses something no one else has.

So what do you do now?

I'd say, start on shaping your eyebrow correctly and work on your skin. Pimples and blemishes create distracting points and accents destroying your natural facial balance. Notice how your face lights up after your eyebrows are shaped correctly and how glowing you seem to look after you've gotten rid of your blemishes.

Oh...and raise that chin a little bit...and don't forget to smile sometimes. Being beautiful starts with feeling beautiful.

Beauty Regimen for a cleaner face

Having a clean face is important, no perfect make up can ever substitute a clean blemish free face.

Whenever I feel ugly, its not just because my make up doesn't feel right...it is usually when I have a pimple or we find my face too course or too oily. I call it a 'stressed' face.

The usual beauty regimen I do is wash my face in the morning and at night. Unless necessary, I try to wash my face twice a day, maximum -- It is more than enough for any skin type..

Here are some points to watch out for:

Washing the face too often may lead to oily skin, the glands may be tricked to thinking that it is not producing enough oil, thus it will, in effect, produce more. Not cleansing regularly especially before you sleep may also lead to build up and eruptions.
Also when cleaning your face, use trepid water. Hot water can dry and damage the skin and cold water won't dissolve and take away the grim as effectively as lukewarm water.
You can do without a sponge or a cloth, your fingertips can do a very good job in cleaning your face. Make sure to wash your hands though before cleansing, otherwise, you might end up rubbing and working dirt in your facial skin.
Do not Scrub too much. It will damage your skin. Upward circular massaging strokes is enough to loosen the grime and dirt.
Rinse with lots of water otherwise the cleanser residue will clog and attract dirt.
Blot your face dry, do not rub!
Seal it off with a water based moisturizer afterwards because it is when skin is most receptive to nourishment.

Having a clean face is important, no perfect make up can ever be a substitute to a clean blemish free face. However there are instances when facial wash is not enough. Especially during my period or when I am very busy and stressed because that would mean not enough time to slee. I've end up having skin discoloration and then pimples would start to show...What I use to clean my face up, when facial wash and water doesn't do the trick is I buy the Beauche set.

One set is Php 750 - a set consists of one of each: soap, skin toner, clarifying lotion, exfoliating cream, rejuvenating cream, and an age eraser cream.

The soap is color orange and it smells really nice, Brendel said it's papaya. The toner also has a sweet smell. The age eraser cream actually works as a sunblock. Just make sure to use it thinly on your face. Too much of it will make you perspire as the cream is heavy.

If you decide try it, one thing you would notice after your first use is the softness and coolness of your skin. Try touching your cheek and feel how instantly it loses its dryness. The first two days though, you wouldn't want to go out, your pimples and blemishes is at its worst.

I don't normally peel off when I use it, nor does it make my face white. It clears your face and it makes it blemish free, you would have a feeling that your face has brightened up. I have a friend though who had experienced a mild peeling when using this kit. So I think, it may vary, depending on your skin type.

Usually, after three days of use, my face would start to clear up. Stubborn pimples dry and my face would be almost blemish free after a week of using it daily. After using it for two to three weeks, I use the toner and clarifying lotion and the creams every other day or three times a week ^.^
