What we looked like in 2009

Ten years ago I created, Fashion Me Fabulous, wrote up a handful of posts, picked a layout and send it all to my friend, Jael. “I’ve started a fashion blog. What do you think?” She gave me a few tips, wrote a couple “guest posts” and before long became my blogging partner. Together, we built a blog and community I could have never built alone. From the end of 2007 to the end of 2014, Fashion Me Fabulous ran regular content about fun, affordable fashion. Jael and I covered fashion week, reviewed fashion books, wrote about fashion history and did more shopping than seems humanly possible to search out the best clothes and accessories. We explored our personal styles, scoured Etsy for unique creations. I watched every single episode of Project Runway and blogged about it. Jael created an amazing presence on Polyvore. We learned all sorts of things about coding and websites and content and graphic design and so on. (You can tell if you look at early posts.) The blog and the readership grew. We loved the work and the community.

By the end of 2014, fashion had shifted, our lives had shifted, and we struggled to find the same inspiration we had before. Both of us loved the blog but wanted to tackle other projects. Jael decided to step back from blog content for the time being but remained (and remains) active on our social media. I, ever stubborn, decided to soldier on without her, but struggled with my vision for the blog going forward. Through 2016, Fashion Me Fabulous stayed active on social media, mostly on Tumblr, but our core blog sat waiting. I spent a lot of this year thinking about Fashion Me Fabulous and what the future should hold.

In 2017, I relaunched with new content and a fresh design. I wanted to find that groove again. Unfortunately, that groove belongs to a different time. Even a redesign of the site didn’t give it the boost it needed. I was following an old format. I was blogging without Jael. I still wasn’t sure where any of it was headed.

It’s time to say “Happy 10th Anniversary,” and also goodbye. Thank you, dear readers, for this decade of fashion fun. And, on a very personal note, thank you Jael for all these years of amazing partnership and, more importantly, friendship. Fashion Me Fabulous will remain an archive of fashion we loved (and occasionally loathed) from the past. We will continue to post on our Tumblr and keep an eye on our social media if you need to get a hold of us.

Meet your new favorite simple summer dress

Summer. It's coming soon with it's sunshine, high temperatures, picnics, festival, barbecues, pool parties and so many more events that require being outside in the heat. If you're shopping in any stores right now, you might have noticed that all the so called sun dresses are made of itchy, plastic-y, hot material. They look summery, but they'll bake you.

Worry not, I've found a cotton summer dress that can get you through the whole summer for less than $20. Add a cropped cardigan or short-sleeve blazer for the office. Don some walking sandals, a fun sunhat and cute sunglasses for a day the fair. Dress it up with high heels, jewelry and a cute wrap for evenings. The possibilities are endless. It's even cute when you layer two different colors.

The fit is beautiful. Compose of 95% cotton and 5% spandex, it fits close to the body through the top and flares gently, which means it works even if it doesn't line up perfectly with you waistline. This dress is much longer than most of the skater dresses in stores. It comes to my knee. (I'm 5'7"). It comes in black, blue, grey, dark green, navy, orange, pink, lilac, wine and white. It also comes in a few prints, but be warned: those are 100% polyester. I'm avoiding the prints because of that.

I love this dress so much I already own it in three colors. I'm thinking of buying the rest of the colors. The white one might be a great slip to wear under some of the sheer dresses I keep finding in stores.

April Birthstones: A different diamond

I know diamonds are supposed to be a girl's best friend, but I never been fond of them. April's birthstone is sparkly, sure, but that's not really my style. I find myself more attracted to "fake" diamonds like Herkimer diamonds (which are crystals), rustic and unique settings, or even uncut stones. What sort of diamond is your best friend?

Victoria Beckham for Target

Target used to be the darling of the designer diffusion line. It's been a few years since those glory days, but I think we're all anxious to see a return. Perhaps Victoria Beckham could be the one to usher in a new era of Target collections.

The collection has a few things going for it. Target is offering the collection up to a size 26W. (Plus sizes will only be available at select stores and online, unfortunately). A cute collection of girls, toddler and baby clothes accompanies the adult collection. According to Target, most items will be under $40 with nothing topping $70.

Review: Stila Stay All Day Liquid Eye Liner

I have a confession. I'm lazy when it comes to makeup. Actually, that's not true. I'm lazy when it comes to mornings. I don't like them. I do everything I can to trim tasks from my mornings so I can swipe my phone alarm to snooze a few more times. Because of this, I'm not one to wear eye makeup (or even makeup) every single day. And I'm always on the lookout for a simple beauty products I can apply while running out the door.

I have a second confession. I'm not good at liquid eyeliner. On top of being lazy in the morning, I lack the patience to properly practice. When I first saw liquid liner in a marker format, I got really excited, but the first few drugstore brands I tried let me down. I was reluctant to try a pricier brand lest that disappoint me too.

Then, I spotted this periwinkle blue Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner from Stila at Sephora. I tried it on my hand and found that it actually goes on that color! I let impulse take over and spent the $22. (A girl's got to treat herself once in a while). I love it. It's wonderful. It stays all day long. Also, it doesn't get gummy or chalky if you have to do touch ups or want to go over the line again for a bolder look. It's even easy to apply. The vivid periwinkle color is fun enough to work completely on it's own too, which means even less work for me in the morning. And it means I can pack a makeup bag with only one eye liner, one tube of mascara and one tube of concealer for an entire trip.

I'm tempted to buy it in every color, and there are 14 colors.

No more wet socks

This might not be the most fashion forward sock, but I love it anyway. I cannot abide wet socks. If I encounter the tiniest bit of water in my stocking feet, I must change socks. Must. Pick of the Week: Target Linen Pants Revisted

I love a good pair of linen pants, but a good pair can be pricey. That's why I wrote about these Target linen pants back in 2011. They used to carry them every year, but the last two years they've either drastically changed them or skipped them all together. This year they are back and better than ever! The pants have always had a drawstring waist, which I felt compelled to cover up. It was never the most attractive, but the pants this year but a much nicer waistline. It's still a drawstring, but the band for the waist is wider and more flattering than some of the previous versions Target has offered. The pants cost $25 and come in a few colors (more colors in stores than online).

I've been seeing adorable braid hairstyles and tutorials all over the place. They're adorable. My hair, however, is quite curly, very wispy and mostly unruly. Suprising Fashion Find: Hot Topic

You may have noticed a lull in content on FMF. A lot of that has to do with the state of fashion right now. We're not big fans of what's in stores at the moment, which is making both shopping and blogging a bit of a challenge. Recently, I made a surprising fashion discover, or rediscovery.
I haven't shopped at Hot Topic since high school, but they sell cool fandom stuff now. I went in for Pokemon, and came out with a few new dresses. Surprisingly, Hot Topic has a wide variety of cut dresses that look quite different from the same dresses I'm seeing everywhere else. They have the typical, edgy fair you'd expect from Hot Topic, but not all of it is fit only for teens. This Black Moto dress ($40) and Aquamarine skull dress ($20) have a fun edge but have simple enough designs to still be versatile.

Most surprisingly, Hot Topic has plenty of retro, adorable clothing like these two looks. The Red and Black Polka Dot Romper ($32) and the Navy Sailor Dress ($79, plus size pictured junior's sizes available too) are sadly both online exclusives, but Hot Topic will ship for free to their stores (and as long as you order with a credit card, you can return online orders to the store too).

Hot Topic mostly offers dresses in junior's sizes so you may want to size up if you're ordering online. Thankfully, most of their stores offer a variety of dresses in all sizes for you to try on and get a sense of size. This Nautical Navy Dress ($44) has little skulls in the print. This little Black Lace Dress ($40) is a simple look made for fun styling.

If you're nerdy, you might like to look into their line of fandom-themed dresses. I have both of these, and I love them because most people just think they are a fun print. They usually don't noticed that I'm wearing a Doctor Who Villains Dress ($28) until they get a closer look. And the Harry Potter Marauder's Map Dress ($28) looks really cute with a cropped jacket and tights

If you want more subtle fandom wear, Hot Topic has that too. You can pick up this Orphan Black Dress ($24), which is a basic red dress with a DNA helix print. For the Disney fans, this Little Mermaid Dress ($32) looks like a tropical, leafy print of sorts from a distance, but really has Ariel silhouettes and bubbles all over it.

1960s Eye Makeup

For Halloween (yes, forever ago), I dressed up like a science officer from Star Trek: The Original Series. This involved big hair and dramatic eyes. Since then, I've been hooked on 1960s eye makeup. For a simple, everyday homage to this style, I dab white on my waterline and use Benefit Push-Up Liner (so easy to use!) for a thick wing. Fake eyelashes are an absolute must for perfecting the look, but it's not something I do everyday. You can play with the 1960s even more by outlining your eyelid with liner or a bright color. Remember, keep your lips neutral, especially if you're opting for one of the more graphic interpretations of this style.

Ode to Black Skinny Jeans

Last year for Halloween I wanted to be Death from the Sandman comics. To do this, I needed black pants. This seems like a straightforward clothing item that I would already have, but you're assuming I'm the kind of person who can find pants that fit. I'm not that kind of person. I really don't own many pants. Because I hate shopping for pants, and because I didn't want to spend a lot of money on pants I probably wouldn't wear often, I grabbed these black skinny jeans on super sale at Target. I think I paid $14. They are usually $28. They fit OK, which is better than most pants fit. They were actual skinny pants not leggings. They were cheap. They were black. I figured they would work for Halloween and maybe I would wear them on cold days at work if they didn't fall down too much. (They fall down a little).

It turns out these jeans, despite all the stretch in them, really shape to your body. After wearing the Halloween costume a few places, the pants had molded to my curves and fit better than any pants I own. This is not to say they fit perfectly. They don't. I don't own any pants that actually fit me, but these fit the best. I work in a somewhat casual office so I am able to wear these to work a lot. Pairing them with a blazer lets me get away with them at trade shows too.

I wore them so much they fell apart by spring and Target stopped carrying them. I managed to nab a pair on clearance for $12. This fall, I noticed they were back. I bought another pair on sale, and I'm thinking about stocking up even if I don't see a sale again because I like them. Also, they are super soft "denim" so they do wear out more quickly than most jeans.

They have a nicer texture than most black jeans. They almost feel more like a super soft chino than a denim. They look amazing with sweaters and boots. They are warm. And I haven't had any trouble with them fading (probably because they wear out quickly).

Side note: The actual blue jeans in this same fit do not fit as well, wear as well or feel as soft and wonderful. They also fade. I have no idea why. These come in khaki, which looks like it would wear the same, but I avoid tight pants that are that close to my actual skin color. Bad plan. I wish they would make these in colors. I would buy all the colors.

Pick of the Week: Dip-hem Skater Dress

This is a power dress. It's the sort of simple dress with an eye-catching detail that lets your inner star shine. It's all about the skirt with it's sexy-sweet dip, abundant pleats and beautiful movement. It's hard to not feel stunning when your skirt swishes. The top is so plain and modest, you can really style it however you want. Red heels and a simple gold necklace? Lovely. Biker boots and a cropped tee? Why not? Beige ballet flats and a silk scarf? Perfect.

There are a few black versions left, but I'm partial to the skin and eye-highlighting blue. This dress is $90 at ASOS and worth it.

Pick of the Week: Comfy Blazer

I'm getting ready for a work trip next week. It will be a whirlwind. I'm flying very early in the morning in time to land and get to an expo that huge and rather hectic. On the last day, I'm leaving the expo and rushing to the airport for an afternoon flight. I'll be flying in work clothes twice. I'll also be stuffing everything for that trip into a carry on. I have to look professional, but I also need to be able to move around the show floor with clothes that travel well. Queue these comfy blazers from target. They are basic, come in great colors, look professional and feel more like a lightweight sweatshirt than a blazer. And, unlike most inexpensive blazers, they fit nicely because they fabric has a little more give.
