Project Runway All Stars:

Last week I was starting to wonder if all the fashion people in Runway world had started speaking a new language and I missed the memo. I was confused. This week, the judges either got over their brain poisoning from last week or I learned the new language without noticing. This challenge made a lot more sense and so did the winners and losers. Also, I was actually able to distinguish which looks the judges liked and disliked by how they talked about them. This is a good sign.

The designers were herded to Broadway and admitted to a theater about to stage a revival of Godspell. Here our All Stars received the challenge to create a look for the rich woman character. The look has to have a lot of pieces because putting it on is part of the production. The look had to scream wealth but have a vintage feel too it as well. It also had the fit the ostentatious character who loved showing off her wealth. Then, after a little sketching, they headed to Mood with $200 for fabrics.

Safe

Jerell was safe. He certainly tried, but the look came off frumpy and mumsy. The look was too old and stuffy. This landed him in a safe spot.

Top Three

Michael's look was fun. I liked the shape and the colors, but it was a little too wearable. This was supposed to be a stage costume, but the hat was the most eccentric part. I agree with the judges (whoa!) that it just needed a bit more.
Austin created a look that could have taken the win (although it was my second favorite of the night). I love the fabric he found. When Joanna saw it she said "I love how it straddles the line of hideous and fabulous. Right now it's hideous but you're going to turn it into something fabulous, right?" I adore Joanna. And I think he reached fabulous.
Mondo took the win. This is the Mondo I've been waiting for. He had to get pretty depressed to get to this point, but once he did, he made something awesome. (I hate to cheer for sad Mondo, but I like the clothes he makes). The judges loved it. (Except maybe Isaac. I can't tell. He makes no sense to me). I think it really fit the character and the vibe they were going for.

Bottom Three

Kenley's look was so very close. When listening to the challenge she seems to have heard the words "vintage" and "ostentatious" while missing the word "rich" because this look was not fancy enough.
Mila lost her way completely. This woman doesn't too over the top. She does sleek, geometric stuff. (But she used to design for Dancing with the Stars so she must have crazy in there somewhere). She was going to do a maxi skirt, but she talked to Joanna about the power of pencil skirts and went that route. Sadly, she took a sharp turn at Russian Hooker.
Kara was the one who walked her last runway though. Isaac gave the backhanded compliment of the night when he said this was her best work so far right before eliminating her. I expected more from Kara in the season, but I have no problem with her going home now. She should have left last week. The bow was too big and distracting. The stole was just a big hunk of faux fur. The pencil skirt wasn't even well made despite the nice pop of color it provided..

Year Round Cardigans

I love cardigans. They are perfect for layering. On the coldest days of winter I can layer them over a long sleeve tee and even under a jacket. In the summer, cardigans are light enough to stash in a tote for cool evenings. Fall and spring are obvious cardigan seasons since the temperature is fluctuating. The end of winter is when most cardigans go on sale. Those sold during the spring and summer are usually to lightweight to wear year round so I think the lighter winter cardis are the best buy. All of these are on sale and prime for cold winter days and cool summer nights. (Plus, I love the look of a cardi with a sun dress--very cute). Top:

Long ago in college, I stopped a poetry class dead in its tracks by trying to explain fat pants to my professor. He was fascinated to learn both that women keep clothes around of varying sizes and also that our weight fluctuates enough for us to need all those sizes in the span of a month. The Horror: Leg Muscle Leggings

Black Milk Clothing has a stunning variety of leggings that, were I the type to drop a week's worth of pay on leggings, I would be delighted to own.

Let me be extremely clear: Their Muscles Leggings would never, ever be found in my closet.

In fact, if Black Milk was paying me to wear them, I still might not do it. What sort of occasion, besides Halloween, is appropriate for looking as if you accidentally left your skin at home? Grocery shopping (Hm, I know I'm forgetting something... oh, right, leg of lamb)? Visiting a 6th grade science class (the young boys might be a little too interested)? Autopsies?

Even Blogger is a little bothered; when I uploaded the image, part of the file name (and you can look at the source code if you think me a liar) is "AAAAAAAAAH".

Say what you will about leggings, this takes revealing to a whole new, rather creepy level. Would you wear these out in public?

Rate the Red Carpet: Grammys 2012

Last week, Jael did a fabulous job of dressing several Grammy nominees. Sadly, after watching the red carpet last night we discovered the nominees and their stylists went for either bizarre are boring (mostly boring). What do you think of their choices versus our recommendations?

Adele swept all six categories in which she was nominated. She deserved it. I know she's talking about being a bit uncomfortable on red carpets and magazine covers, but I still wish she'd move beyond basic black and have a little fun with fashion. After all, she sure seemed to be having fun last night. I especially wish she would try something like the stunning silver gown pictured here. What do you think?

Katy Perry's blue Elie Saab dress was very very pretty, but it wasn't very very Katy Perry. I don't mind her going for a pretty look. I even love the color. But I've come to expect her to show up looking like Willy Wonka designed her dress (not just the cotton candy on her head). It's just more fun that way. Don't you think?

Kelly Clarkson skipped the red carpet last night so it may not be totally fair to rate her dress. This is her performance dress, which looked lovely and fit her performance and her very nicley. I do hope someday we see Kelly wow on the Red Carpet with all the power and emotion with which she wows on stage.

Rihanna somehow kept her dress on all night with nary a malfunction. She told Ryan Seacrest she help Armani design the dress (and she's working on a capsule collection for him, which I hope will be more exciting and contain more fabric than this). I miss the days when Rihanna rocked an interesting gown. Don't you?

Pick of the Week: Leather Skirt

If you look at leather skirts longingly, then you really should think about investing in one. While their popularity rises and falls, they never really go out of style. The texture is so distinct it can really make our outfit pop. Minis are the most popular length for leather skirts, and floucey short styles are increasingly available. If you're going to invest in a leather skirt, however, the classic, knee-length pencil may be your best bet.* Jones New York currently has a dark brown pencil skirt on clearance for $139 (down from $279). I would wear this with a white silk bow blouse and these heels in red. How would you wear a leather pencil skirt?

*Unless you want the skirt for clubbing. In that case, I can't help you. I'm not sure I've ever even been in a club. I'm more of a sit at home and watch Masterpiece Theater while drinking tea sort of girl.

Project Runway All Stars: Bizarro Seasons

Last night, our All Stars were subjected to a seasonal fashion face off. I hate these. First, they amp up drama by making the designers compete head to head. Second, this means the winner of each pair is safe from elimination so if two looks for one pair were great, one of them has to be in the bottom. This isn't how it should work. Best looks in the top. Worst in the bottom. Anyway, the eight designers were assigned two to each of four seasons and instructed to create a weekend getaway look.

Because of this stupid challenge requirement and Isaac's bullying, Mondo, Rami, Austin and Michael were the bottom four designers last night. Read that list again. What is going on? This means the top four contained Kara, Kenley, Mila and Jerrell. Kara. Seriously?

The Designs

Austin and Kara wend head to head on Spring. Austin's look was perfectly made. He tried to be fashion forward with the high waisted crop pants, but his granny-goes-to-church sweater set held him back. A slight shift in proportions and a different pattern or color (or even less matchy matchiness) on top could have made this rather cool. Kara's look was utterly boring and unoriginal. It wasn't even well-made. Yet it was very "wearable." (Please stop using that word, judges). I was actually able to find almost the exact cardigan, top and pants at Dress Barn, a store I rarely think of as "fashion forward." Since Austin's look was off, they decided Kara took the top spot. If this hadn't been a head to head though, I think Kara would have gone home for being boring. Instead, she was in the top.
Kenley and Mondo tackled summer. When I saw Kenley's romper I wrote: "Instant hipster, just add ironic glasses." Beyond Katy Perry and Zooey Deschanel, hipsters are the only grown women I can imagine in this romper. It's too twee. I think I wore it when I was four. The judges loved it though. They thought making "one piece" sportswear was "original." Angela said she would wear it, which is a lie. Surprisingly, it was Mondo's look the judges called "junior." It wasn't his best work, and it wasn't as good as last week's shorts look. However, the separates were "wearable" (since they used that word so much this week). And I thought it was a far more likely choice for adults to wear. Nonetheless, Mondo landed in the bottom while Kenley nearly snatched a win.
Mila and Rami got ready for jacket weather with their fall looks. Mila grabbed the top spot for her color block cape, basic red tee and jeans that fit well but only had awkward ankle zipper embellishments to make them unique. Rami offered a really cool jacket and equally well made pants. Sadly he didn't go for a boring tee underneath like Mila did. He chose an unfortunate green fabric and tortured it. It was bad, but I thought the jacket made up for it. The judges didn't and sent him home. He went home for that jacket--so sad. Mila's look was nice. I don't' really mind that it was in the top, but it wasn't anything fun or exciting. (OK, so I guess I do mind it in the top--it's safe at best).
Jerrell and Michael created a downright icy working environment for winter. Jerrell accused Michael of copying his jacket. It was too much drama, and I don't even care. Joanna settled it with a "may the best design win," but Jerrell wouldn't let go. This was actually the best of the four seasons. I do think Jerrell had the better look. You can't see the cool cardigan underneath here, but it had big double buttons and I want it. Isaac hated the buttons but somehow got over it to give Jerrell the win. Michael also created a pretty good look considering he doesn't do sportswear or winter very well. The judges said Michael's look seemed like the mother version of Jerrell's. I agree. Michael's did have an older "ski lodge in Aspen" feel while Jerrell's seemed like an Urbanite who was supposed to be vacationing in the Alps but took a train to some shopping instead. I think Jerrell's win was the only thing right about this episode.
As I said, I hate that this was a fashion face-off. It caused them to evaluate the looks based only on the other look in the category. Austin's look may have normally landed in the bottom anyway, but Kara's would have too. And Kara would have gone home for being very boring and Austin would have been safe because Isaac said his pants were the best part of the show.

Which brings me to problems two and three. Problem number two is Isaac. He is a bully and the other judges take it. If he likes something hideous (like Mila's milk & sour cherries dress), everyone decides it wasn't so bad after all. If he hates something cute (like Jerrell's buttons), the other judges stop saying how much they like it. I miss Nina. She would be questioning Isaac's taste level and kicking him when he tried to bully the panel.

Problem number three is the judges inability to decide what they like and dislike. They often confuse me by disliking the very things they picked as top looks or liking the things they put in the bottom. Sometimes they act like someone else picked the top and bottom looks for them and asked them to pick the best and worse respectively. Also, they aren't as bold as our original panel. Heidi, Michael and Nina have thrown out rules before like that time there was a team challenge and teams were supposed to win or lose, but they threw that out and picked a winner and loser from the same team because that's what should have happened. These judges could have done that last night, but they didn't. It would have even made for a good twist so I'm sure the producers would have allowed it.

What did you think of this episode? Who should have gone home? Did Rami really deserve it? How did Rami go before Kara? Doesn't designing out of the Dress Barn catalog earn as least a scolding? Why were the people I expected to see as finalists all in the bottom?

Dress the Nominee: Grammys 2012

It's going to be a big night for Adele, as well it should. Girl's had a big year, but her wardrobe is not very superstar. Chalk that up to stylists not knowing what to do with a plus size girl. They always put her in black, knee length dress. (The one exception being a green jacket at the 51st Grammys.) I'd like her to mix things up with color. This outfit features a full skirt from Jason Wu and a bustier top by Louis Vuitton. Barring color, at least go with a metallic. Amber Riley and Queen Latifah wear them all the time (just call their stylist and fire yours) to great effect. This silver Dolce & Gabbana has excellent waist definition and a 1960s vibe fitting for a retro queen.

Usually, I pick two options for each nominee, but have you ever seen a more Katy Perry dress than this practically candy-coated Nicolas Jebran? No, you have not.

Many years ago, I voted Kelly Clarkson. I still <3 her. Kelly doesn't usually wow on the red carpet, but she should. Ten years later and she's still awesome. This velvet Dolce & Gabbana cocktail dress would be fantastic on her. I'd really like to see her in red, and this floral Elie Saab couture is stunning. There's a little jacket too if she's not feeling the strapless. (Does anyone else imagine Kelly would totally wear a regular bra with an evening dress and cover the straps with a jacket?)

Rihanna used to be a fashion must-see for me, but I haven't liked a lot of her looks since she got the extensions. Stay feminine but return to the land of the fashion forward with Alexander McQueen's coral-encrusted gown, but skip the hood because Gaga's been there, worn that. For a change, I'd like to not see the inside of Rihanna's thighs. Girl has an allergy to leg coverings. Nicolas Jebran's springy gown is oragamied within an inch of its life. Wearing this dress and not being remembered is impossible.

The Horror: Fringe

I'm a big fringe fan (Fringe is also pretty good), but it has to be done right. Many of you will disagree, but I hate hippie fringe -- macrame, suede, etc. It just looks like a sloppy costume to me. The style of the piece needs to remind me of pre-WWII era. Fringe is back for spring, but I think neither my flapper sensibilities nor becca's hippie vibes will be pleased.

One of my more steadfast fringe rules is that it has to be actual fringe not just strips of cloth. Following that rule would have prevented this skirt from looking like a bloody paper-shredder accident. The biggest offender in that department, however, is shredded, faux-vintage tees. Maybe you are capable of rocking this look. If so, please send photographic evidence that it can be done. When I see these shirts, all I can think of is Miley Cyrus and her ilk trying to show adults that they're serious grownups because they know what Woodstock is.

This tee shirt has actual fringe but it's only on the sides. Of course the model's wearing leopard print daisy dukes with her sideburn shirt. Let's not speak of this again.

Since fringe can be purchased relatively cheaply at the hobby store, I don't like paying a lot for it. Maison Martin Margiela is known for being fashion forward, but a bra with fringe attached shouldn't cost nearly $400, even though the construction is far superior to the $72 knock-off.

Another rule of fringe is that it needs some movement. If the material is too stiff or the fringe was cut too short, it loses some of the shimmying fun and the fringe sticks out in odd directions. Not only are the people at Urban Outfitters unaware of this, but they also think gold hot pants are a good idea in general.

Pick of the Week: Valentine's Coat

Indiana February is generally dreary. We should be under two feet of snow and ice that has been accumulating since November. The snow should be covered in road filth and the sky should be an unending, oppressive grey. Thankfully, Old Man Winter's been asleep. We've had a couple blizzards, but mostly it's been a perpetual March this season. Spring can't come fast enough, and I already have my eye on trench coats. Mod Cloth's red skirted trench may not be right for most winters, but it's perfect for Valentine's Day. Heart buttons and contrast trim bows! I'd tell you to keep an eye on it in case the $180 price drops, but it's Mod Cloth so buy now.

Flirty Valentine's Skirts

Hubby and I don't celebrate Valentine's Day. Other people can if they want, but we prefer to just love each other all the time and spend February focusing on the numerous birthdays that fall this month. But this year Hubby wanted to take me on a weekend getaway and the only weekend that worked is right before Valentine's Day. Now I feel all romantic and squishy.

becca likes to dress thematically for holidays, but I don't. Because of that, I'd much rather buy my pink and red in separates. So if I'm feeling extra romantic, I can wear a pink skirt with a white ruffle blouse and heart jewelry. Not so festive? Pink skirt, saffron sweater, black scarf.

Jason Wu for Target Review

Oh, Target. It seems like I cover the same complaints every time I review one of your designer collections? Can't you just make things better? Is it really that hard to tell us which stores will be carrying a collection and which won't? Can't you send a full or close to full line to the stores you do stock?

Once again, Target has only release their designer collection to select stores, but you'll have to call or drive around to figure out which ones because I can't find a list on the website anywhere. They also didn't send the full collection to all of the stores. I visited two stores this morning (and I'm sick, look at all I do for you, dear readers). The first had tops and a couple dresses, but no accessories. In fact they only had two little, mostly empty display racks (one is pictured). They had had the bags but were sold out. The second Target had nothing so I got some cold medicine and came home.

I'll keep my rant brief since I make the same one for every Target collection, but isn't the point of bringing a designer to Target to let everyone get a stab at those designer goods? Remember the early days of designer collections when you could visit any well-stocked Target during the week of the debut and get most of the things you'd spotted in the commercial? What happened to that?

As for the clothing itself, I think they did a pretty good job from what I was able to see. The clothes are all polyester and rayon--no natural fibers--but they are constructed better than most of what Target offers these days. The fit seemed to run true to the sizes I usually wear at Target so if you know your Target size, don't be afraid to order online. (I can only speak for the dresses and tops. I didn't see any skirts). Speaking of online, not much is available there. I had hoped that meant more would be available in the stores. Maybe you get more if you live in a major fashion city where they put all the stock in a "pop up" store last week. *shakes angry fist*

I think Wu did a good job of designing cute, feminine pieces in fun, unique prints that Target was actually able to pull off in a decent price range. The dresses I saw were $40, which isn't bad for a top of the line Target dress. The tops ranged in price from reasonable for a blouse to more than I'd pay for a t-shirt. I just wish Target would stop messing up the distribution.

Project Runway All Stars: Take Off Your Clothes

Last night's challenge may have been the most awkward one in Runway history. The designers were taken to Central Park and instructed to find a muse. Not only would they have to approach random people to be their muses, but they would also be forced to ask for their clothing so they could make at least 50 percent of their look from it. All they had to give in return is maybe some of their $150 budget (but they needed that for other fabric too) and a white t-shirt. If I was wearing something cute enough to be considering inspiring, I would never give it to a random reality TV star. Sorry. Also, it was unfortunately summer so people weren't wearing a lot of fabric. This would work better in the fall. Anthony did a good job of getting a lot of fabric (he even got a shirtless man's shorts). But everyone else struggled. It was pretty painful to watch. I hope they don't do this again.

Our guest just this week was hockey player turned Vogue intern, Sean Avery. He mostly grunted opinions and was sort of worthless (save one line we will discuss later). I'm not sure this is an OK follow up to judges like DvF. This all star season can get much better fashion people.

Safe

All of the girl were safe this week. Kara did a pretty good job taking inspiration from her muse, but I didn't really love anything about the look. The styling wasn't great either.
I'm a bit confused by Kenley's dress. I like the graphic nature of it. I could see it in a cutsey retro music video (maybe with the just the boob panels or pocket panels--not both). It's better than a lot of what Kenley has done. But it still missed for me. Maybe it's too safe. Maybe I just find Kenley too irritating.
Mila was so close to awesome this week. The pants are cool, but the whole look just seems too generic. That girl is everywhere. I can get most of the elements of this look at any Target, Kohl's, Forever 21, H&M, or mid-price department store around. If she had just stepped it up a little she could have landed a top spot.

Top

Rami nabbed a top slot with his very chic shorts suit. I loved it. I have no idea why the judges were complaining about the hat. The hat was fun. Also, the shorts were a real-life wearable length. Thank you, Rami! I love that he did a menswear inspired look that came out so feminine. He didn't really channel his muse much, and I'm not sure he used enough fabric from the street (but I guess the judges don't mind how well you follow rules if they like your look).
Austin also landed a top slot it what I think is his best look yet. He found this really cute punk girl who actually gave him her clothes. I assume she knew who he was because his look is a bit creepy lately--especially when you consider he was running around asking young women if he could take their picture and their clothing. If Nina had been there she would have pointed out that this didn't look expensive. I think that's what kept it from winning. It was super cute, but a little low-end looking. He did one of the best jobs of channeling his muse though.
Mondo won! Woot! Go, Mondo! He deserved it. He created a very cool, upscale look based on his muse. The graphic shorts were fun and very well made. The jacket was super cute and the bra/bikini top really worked with the vibe. The judges all loved it. Although Isaac stupidly complained that it was "too stylish" because I woman couldn't make it her own off the runway. First of all, he's wrong. Second of all, how is something "too stylish"? This look has three seperate pieces, I'm can think of a variety of ways I would switch up the jacket and shorts with other things. (I don't see me rocking the bikini/bra top a clothing personally).

Bottom

Jerrell. OK. Where to start? Hockey player Vogue intern guest judge, Sean Avery, gave his only good critique of the night when he said this looked like "Lady Gaga and Gwen Stefani at Burning Man on acid." Yes. That is exactly what this looks like. If Nina had been there she would have had Jerrell escorted from the building because of his questionable taste level (I didn't expect to miss Nina so much. I really miss her). I appreciate risk taking. I guess the judges do to because he was safe. But this had way too much going on. (I do really like the shoulders though. Just the shoulders. Nothing else). I also felt bad for the model because Isaac said her "big stomach" was too much. He meant too much exposed stomach. Thankfully, Avery called him out for poor choice of words.
I have no idea what happened to Michael this week. This was bad. If the judges didn't love him, and he hadn't won so much, I think he would have gone home. Those are not shorts. That top is not OK. The belt doesn't really make sense, but I have a feeling it is holding the look together--literally, like the top and shorts would fall down without it. I don't understand. I hope he regains fashion consciousness next week and confesses he was suffering from some sort of short term insanity.
Anthony did the best collecting lot of fabric from people, but he forgot to use it in his look. The judges decided that meant he deserved to go home. I actually think a lot of the designers used more purchased fabric than street fabric. However, it bothered me that the print he got from the woman who was supposed to be his mused just turned into a clutch. He could have made a top or a jacket or anything really. His actual look, though boring, was better than what Michael and Jerrell showed. I'm really sad to see Anthony go--not for his design potential but for his entertainment value. I'm also unsure if he deserved to go.

The other day hubby and I went into work with three inches of snow outside. When we left, the ground was bare, it was near 50 degrees and the wind was whipping. "This morning it was January," he noted, "and we're going home in March."

Spring Couture

Armani Prive is usually one of my favorite couture shows, but this..? If the fabric isn't overly shiny and cheap-looking (for the third season) then the print photographs terribly. The pic factor shouldn't be an issue for a designer, except these clothes need to appeal to both fashion editors, celebrities, and rich women who will be photographed for the society pages. So while the colors are great and I enjoy the overall reptilian vibe and accessories, this show is a miss for me.

Jean Paul Gaultier was a gritty comic book with an ensemble cast of 1960s teenage femme fatals.

I looked at all the outfits in all the couture shows and there's little to stir the imagination. (Givenchy may be nice, but I can't tell from the photos.) These are dark fashion times. Thankfully, I tripped across Flip-Zone the other day. Not only do they cover many designers whose work you've seen (like Zuhair Murhad and Nicolas Jebran) but they also cover independent designers and those whose main markets are Asia and the Middle East. Finding the Perfect Purse

I know a lot of women who are purse addicts. They have more purses than I have individual shoes. I'm not one of those women. Don't get me wrong, I love bags. I'm just really picky. When my favorite purse fell apart in 2006, I spent almost two years looking for a replacement. That replacement, pictured here, is still my everyday purse. I've had a few others in that time, but they aren't perfect like the one I've been carrying since late 2007. (It's 2012. Yikes!)

This bag has almost everything I require:

Three main compartments--two large, one small
Zipper closures on all the main compartments (or I will lose stuff)
Pockets on the inside for my phone and sunglasses
Must be cute (which is hard to find since my organization requirements only occur in "old lady" purses).
Can't be too heavy when empty (because I will pack it)
Must comfortably fit a wallet that doesn't close, a change purse, a card holder, a smart phone, sunglasses, a notebook and pen, business cards, an easily accessible Epi pen and pharmacy of allergy meds, hand lotion, lip balm, my keys and hand wipes, with room for other random finds
Should be a fun color (mine is black, sadly)
Should work for all seasons because I'd rather not switch bags

It even has a tiny pocket on the front where I keep coupons, business cards and frequent customer cards. The only feature I'd really like to add is an optional shoulder strap, but I usually have my bag in my hand so that's not an issue.

It needs to be replaced. It's treadbare. (It didn't hold up like I'd hoped a bag from Anthropologie would. It's been falling apart since mid-2008). But I don't want a new purse. I want this purse (in an assortment of colors). The friends I've been purse shopping with just throw their hands up at my tiny complaints about each option they present. Perhaps I'll learn to sew well enough to recreate my current bag before things start falling through the bottom of it.

What makes a bag perfect for you? Are you the type to collect a variety, or do you have one or two main bags at a time? Is anyone else as picky as I am?
