This is very much feasible and in fact I remember running a forum back in the day, where we had this system. This will take some type to implement though but is definitely in our to-do list now.

Download an image you like.
Upload it to a free image hosting site like Imageshack
Go to your User control panel to edit Avatar
Enter the link of the avatar in the "link off-site" field.
Enter avatar dimensions (can be seen by right clicking on image and properties)
Submit and you are done.

Here's a tip on how to find great avatars:

Search for your keyword
On the left navigation, choose "Exactly" and enter 100px * 100px
You will find images with the Avatar size you need.
