That's a whole lotta gloves! But not quite enough....

I love gloves for several reasons:

1. They keep me warm. On a 50F degree day I can go out with gloves sans jacket and stay warm.

2. They protect my hands from the sun and from germs. In fall and winter plenty of people are sick and spreading viruses and bacteria. So many things we touch and don't think about it: elevator buttons, stair rails, keypads getting gas or paying for things. I wear my gloves while shopping. I even wear gloves during Mass to shake hands. Don't worry, I remove them for Communion.

3. They are elegant and stylish. I love a bright colored glove with a dark coat.

Every Christmas my husband asks me for a list of what I'm coveting, preferably with links so he can order my presents online. I don't always get everything I want, but at least he cares enough to ensure what he puts under the tree will make me happy. This year I asked for three unique pairs of gloves. Unique because I cannot find them in my local stores and I never see women wearing such things. He bought all three.

My husband says it looks like dragon scales. Just call me Smaug.

Covers up to over the knuckles but leaves my fingers free for touchscreens!

These gloves are a deep chocolate brown. I draped a black glove over to show the color difference.

Nice stitching and wide opening for the thumb. Notice the elastic at the wrist for good fit.

These are incredibly soft and smooth.

I was astonished at the length of these gloves when I tried them on Christmas morning. Great for a sleeveless dress for New Year's Eve.

Each pair of gloves came with their own dustbag for storage. Below photo shows the difference in length between the three pairs.

While I was making my list for the hubby, I saw these little cuties that I just had to have and bought for myself. They were only $7!

I love grey suede and I am constantly on the lookout for grey gloves.

The wrist adjusts to fit snug or loose, however you prefer.

The inside is nice fuzzy fleece. These keep my fingers free and my hands warm. My office is sometimes cold in winter. I can wear these and still type.

Before the Fall: Long Skirt and Guess Studded Heels

Before Fall really began to show its colors, my friend Ruta asked me to go to the park with her and take some photos. I hadn't done that in a while so I agreed. Yes, I realize Fall is way past us as we just had a pretty decent Winter storm blow through town. I was looking through photos I never posted and decided these were worthy. And it makes me feel warm to see myself outside without a coat!

First up, a pose together on the decking overlooking the lake. Ruta is very tall and therefore makes me look very small. It's kinda funny to see us side by side like this. I don't really feel that much smaller when we are together.

As we were posing in the park taking pictures a group of runners came by and stopped in their tracks to gawk at the weirdos taking pictures, wearing heels and dresses in our wooded park. I couldn't help but laugh.

I almost blend in with the trees in this outfit by Surrealist. I lost count of how many times I tripped on the edge of the skirt walking off the paved pathway to get next to the tree. I went through a metallic hunt over the summer and found these studded bronze Carole sandals by Guess at DSW. Had to have them! If you look closely, you can see the grey streak I'm developing in my hair. Time stops for no man (or woman!)

Some kids tromped across the bridge while we were under there taking pictures. They wanted to know what we were doing and how we got down there. I asked if they were the Billy Goats Gruff.

Fashion Sister In Training: Tina

Tina is a new friend of mine and we get along like gangbusters. She asked me if I would help her renew her wardrobe and teach her how to shop. YES! I would love to! Helping others cultivate their fashion sense is one of my favorite things to do. She works in a warehouse and her wardrobe is 90% jeans, t-shirts, and sneakers. This just won't do!

So one bright, sunny day this summer we set out for the mall.

The Limited was having a really good clearance sale and since our budget was limited (and whose isn't really?) it seemed like a great place to start. Here are our results:

This cobalt blue silky tank works great with her coloring and it will go with every piece she bought. Dress it up, dress it down, or somewhere in between, it is a perfect choice for her. Here we paired it with a flat front light beige dress pant. The flat front is slimming and looks great.
We found the metallic wedge worn with these slacks at DSW on the clearance rack. Winning!

Tina needed a shoe that wasn't too dressy or too casual and these fit the bill. She can wear these with just about anything: dress slacks, jeans, skirts and shorts.

Tina doesn't really own dresses and skirts due to her job, but she wants to have clothes to wear out to dinner with her husband.

The same blue tank pairs very nicely with this black and white patterned skirt from the Limited. We even managed to get her in a pair of 6 inch black suede heels by Levity purchased from the clearance rack at DSW. I know these shoes are super comfortable and easy to walk in: I own them in cobalt!
She also purchased some items not pictured, such as black shorts from Ann Taylor Loft. Tina didn't think she could wear shorts, but I proved her wrong. She has worn them out several times and loves them.
Since our first shopping trip, Tina has grown in fashion confidence and is learning to build outfits splendidly. She used to hate shopping; now she LOVES it!

LOFTy Casual Cool

Last Sunday I was again out at my local mall shopping with my friend Ruta. We went into LOFT as I had received an email they were having a 60% off sale. I was specifically interested in the $25 dress sale. Ruta was interested in buying another tank from there. I had not been to LOFT in quite some time.

I had no idea they had such sweet tanks for only $6!

I bought three> pink, yellow, and olive! How easily I am diverted from dresses... I also found a relaxed, loose-fitting pair of white linen shorts over on the clearance racks.

This Saturday called for a casual wardrobe that would also not be too hot. Temps were in the 90s and we had errands to run. A tank top and shorts were the right choice. First, we went to Starbucks for some much needed caffeine. Then on to PetSmart for some more puppy food. Last stop: the park to walk our 10 month old yorkies. They LOVE going to the park and always have a great time.

Once I got home, it was time to check on my flowers. I like to stroll my property and see how my gardening efforts are doing. I figured it would be a nice place for photos. The below garden is the one I labored over last winter and spring and WOW it has really busted out since then!

Can you believe I'm not wearing heels? Once I bought these shorts I knew I needed some funky casual shoes to wear with them. These white high tops are by Roxy. The zipper and the buckle sold these shoes to me. Clearance at DSW sealed the deal. Prior to this the only sneakers I owned were running shoes.

All this outfit needs is a white cotton ball cap! If you know where I can find one, please tell me.

TopShop Sundress in the Vineyard

Virginia has its own wine country and occasionally Chris and I venture out to one of the many vineyards. A couple weeks ago we went to Richmond Uncorked and of all the wines we tasted we enjoyed Cooper Vineyards wines the most. They had the best tasting wine of the day and they also told us they have tastings every weekend at their vineyard in Louisa County.

Saturday we decided to go check them out. The weather was beautiful and sunny, not too hot and not too humid. Perfect day for a picnic and wine:

I wore the TopShop sundress I bought in Las Vegas last May and my white Baby Phat wedges.

Cooper Vineyards hosts tastings in their tasting room every Saturday and Sunday in the afternoons. They sell their wines, crackers and cheese are available for purchase, or you may bring your own food. We elected to bring fried chicken, extra sharp white cheddar, and Olive Oil and Cracked Peppercorn Triscuits. We started out with the Copper Vineyards Chambourcin which is delicious. We chose to sit outside on their patio/deck area. There are ceiling fans to keep their guests comfortable but the breeze was sufficient.
Once we finished our food and first bottle of wine, we purchased a bottle of Rhapsody to drink while we strolled through the vineyard.

Chris has our bottle and we're ready to go exploring the vineyard.

This gives you a good view of the deck area of Cooper's Tasting Room.

Richmond Canal Walk in an H&M Dress

This post is more pictures than words. Several weeks ago, I went down to the canal walk for a photo shoot. If you're in Richmond, the canal walk is definitely an interesting place to visit. Just ignore the bums>

The adolescent geese following their parents were too cute.

The dress is from H&M and priced at $15. It's colorful and good for a weekend. I didn't realize how short it looks until I saw these photos!

At the point I took this photo the wind was blowing just right to drive home the meaning of the text on the wall. P-U! Thank goodness it only lasted a few minutes.

I highly recommend a visit to the Canal Walk. There is more to it than what I captured here and the view of the river is amazing!

Phoenix Rising

No, not the city of Phoenix but the mythical bird. This blog and its author have been foundering in the ashes with no voice. I may have found my voice again. I'm trying.

I went shopping yesterday all by myself and had a really good time. I had not been to the mall or any other store for fashion items for quite some time. I managed to find some things I had to have and subsequently, inspiration for a fashion post. This is after all supposed to be a fashion blog!

At the beginning of the Spring season, I began wearing combinations of black and cream or black and white, just because the Fashion Muse moved me to do so. Of course, I also had to throw in touches of red. I went on a business trip to Massachusetts in April and everything I packed was either black, white, or red so that my pieces were interchangeable to create the most outfits out of less. I love this combination.
It came as no surprise to me that when I showed up at the mall, this combination is prevalent in many of the stores. I ventured into Express and the racks were loaded with black and white. I'm really liking dresses these days. So easy to put on. One piece and you're pretty much ready to face the day. Express was having a sale (of course) > 30% off dresses. Perfect!

There were many black and white combinations to choose from and I tried on 3 dresses. This one screamed "Take me home!" You know what to do: Say 'Yes' to the dress! The unique cut of the back drew my admiration as well.

As usual, I had to add some color to the ensemble and chose fabulous cobalt blue heels by Levity. The heels is HIGH but the platform in the front and the ankle straps make them super comfortable and walking is a breeze.

January Houndstooth

Hey fashion lovers! Finally, an outfit post!! I haven't done one of these in far too long, I know. The motivation for taking photos just hasn't been with me. I have been busy cooking and knitting and domestic in general. There will be food posts coming soon. (I know this is a fashion blog, but I love food too!) Today, however, I wore an outfit with every intention to capture it, and managed to forget while I was out. Fortunately, my son saved the day when I got home and took pictures for me.

Houndstooth is my pattern of the day. This outfit is rather simple, but I just love the graphic print.

I don't shop at Forever XXI very often and when I do I tend to be very selective about what I buy. In October I was hunting down a hot pink skirt when I found this top. Instantly, I knew I had to have it. I love houndstooth and had recently purchased the Steve Madden pumps featured in this post.

The pixelation of the houndstooth print reminded me of an early video game and being somewhat of a computer geek, I am even more in love with this top. Besides, when worn with a hot pink skirt, it will really catch the eye. The raspberry-hued scarf I knitted myself earlier this month. I don't have the raspberry beret, but I might have to work on that next.

I bought these Steve Madden pumps back in September and I have really enjoyed wearing them. They are really comfortable to walk in and the strap across the foot prevents me from stepping out of them.

When Teddy saw us go outside, he decided to run out, too. He began springing up at me so I just had to pick him. Too cute! It was a bit chilly out so Shyla elected to stay indoors where it was warm. I'm sure she will be seen in future posts.

Puppy Love

November was a very busy month and kept me away from posting. My arm is almost normal now and my doctor let me go back to the gym. This post is not about fashion but focused on the newest members of our family.

Teddy and Shyla

If you remember, my Chihuahua Itsy Bitsy Boo passed in April. I didn't think I would get another dog for a LONG time. Chris talked me into it and insisted we get TWO puppies. We both decided Yorkies would be the perfect canines for us. Saturday we headed off to Midland, VA to pick up our new babies.
Teddy

Teddy is quite a handful! He kept Chris very busy on the ride home. He is very active and inquisitive. Mostly he wants to know what his people are doing. He is very smart and already seems to know his name. He is also learning to come when he is called.
Tough guy Jonathan had said he doesn't like small dogs and wouldn't have anything to do with them > before they came home. Evidence to the contrary once they arrived:

Jonathan is ALL about Teddy. He even asked me if Teddy could be HIS dog instead of mine.

Shyla

Shyla is much calmer than Teddy around her people but she loves to give kisses. She lay peacefully on Chris' lap all the way home while I drove. Yet when it comes to Teddy, she is a wild dog! She chases him all over, jumps on him, and wants whatever he has. She doesn't seem to quite know her name yet, but that is our fault more than hers. We started to call her Willow, but Shyla seemed more "her".

For all his talk Jonathan is interested in Shyla, too. He is looking forward to her growing more comfortable in her new home and opening up.
Teddy and Shyla are 12 weeks old and weigh approximately 2 pounds each > tiny little pups! At maturity, they will weigh about 4 pounds.

Even when Shyla tries to rest, Teddy has to bug his sister. Here he is jabbing his paw into the crate to get her attention. When that wasn't enough....

He decided to get in the crate with her in order to pester her more effectively.

Taking good photos of puppies is NOT easy! These two were racing in and out of the kitchen this morning while I lay on the floor with the camera. Every time I got it focused and ready, they would move out of frame, or they would try to sniff the lens and Teddy wanted to play with the neck strap. Silly puppies!

We are very happy and excited to have these two new furry babies as members of our family. No doubt they will be showing up in fashion photos in the future!

Hazardous Heels: Falling for Pumps

Last month I posted on my recent shoe purchases. One of those pairs of shoes were these Nine West suede pumps:

These shoes are a beautiful shade of oxblood and really amp up a neutral outfit. They also have proven to be quite dangerous footwear.

Two weeks ago I wore these to work for the very first time. They fit like a glove and were very comfortable. I wore a tan, black, and white skirt from The Limited which I recently bought along with a soft, white top. The oxblood pumps added the splash of color this outfit needed. I felt very sassy in my new suede pumps.

Until...

I was walking towards the elevators in my office building on my way back from buying lunch, taco salad successfully acquired in a bag hanging from my left arm. Somehow I managed to get the heel of my right shoe caught in the bow on the toe of my left shoe. WHAM! Down on the tiled floor I went, landing primarily on my left elbow and scuffing my left knee.

No one saw me fall, but several co-workers saw me rising from off the floor. Initially, I believed I had just badly bruised my elbow, my knee, and my pride.

I have no idea how I got the heel stuck through the bow, but I did. A former EMT at the office checked me out and we thought it was just bruised so I declined going to the doctor to get checked out that day and just iced my elbow. The next morning I couldn't even move my arm so off to the Patient First I went and then to an orthopedist. It turns out I managed to break the radial head of my radius bone in three places. This type of break requires no cast as it is at the joint and casting it would cause my elbow joint to stiffen. So I get to use my arm gently and wait for it to heal.

I also managed to break my shoe:

For the remainder of that day I wore them. I was able to clip the bow back in place with a large paperclip as a temporary fix after I returned to my desk. Now I need to permanently repair the bow. Some of my friends have suggested removing the bow as it poses a walking hazard for me. Looking at the left shoe without the bow across the toe convinces me that would never do. The bow detail "makes this pump a standout (if not stand up) shoe.

Now I am left with one broken bone and one broken shoe. The arm will heal in 6 weeks. The shoe will be repaired much sooner.

I will wear them again, but next time I will be much more careful how I place my feet when walking.

Sporting Aqua Heels

While I was out in Phoenix, I purchased a gorgeous pair of Michael Antonio heels at DSW. Every time I wear these women gush over them, even in the dark!

While I was out shopping this weekend, I saw a pair of heels closely resembling the Michael Antonio heels I own.

I found these in Bebe at Stony Point Fashion Park and they are on sale for $45. So for all of you ladies lusting after my satin Aqua heels, you can have your very own pair.

Tuesday Shoesday: Madden Girl Vexxx

Tuesday is always Shoesday. I can't help myself! I am Vexxxed with an obsession for shoes.
During our shopping spree on Saturday, Tiffany and I swung by the DSW as our first stop to see the new stock. As usual, we saw plenty of shoes we loved.
Without further ado, here are my new pumps!

Madden Girl Vexxx Black Houndstooth

For once, it was just me making a purchase. I've been on the hunt for new Fall pumps as my shoe size has been changing over the last year. I had to give away 6 or 7 pairs of Fall/Winter shoes that were barely worn as they no longer fit me. It's a sad day when you walk right out of pair after pair of beloved shoes that fit when you bought them. I have to admit, replacing my shoes with new ones is plenty of fun.

After stalking through the aisles of DSW, we moved on to the mall and Saxon Shoes. We browsed the new stuff for a bit and then headed for the Back Room. It was slim pickings in there, but I found an awesome deal.

These oxblood suede beauties are by Nine West, named Francess. Regular price is $79, but I scooped them up for $33 with tax! These were perfect to replace the oxblood metallic patent pumps I bought in 2010. Ironically, they were also by Nine West, but I gave their gently worn soles away to my friend Kathy when my foot shrunk.

Nine West knows how to do a pointy toe just right and I love the embellished bow on this pair. They fit like a glove and Oh so comfortable! I can barely wait to wear them!

Next on the list, we went to Dillards shoe department and stumbled upon a MOST awesome sale. They had a plethora of designer shoes on sale for 65% off! Shoe sale heaven!! We tried on a bunch of different shoes: sandals, pumps, and platforms.

In the end, Tiffany and I both walked away each with a pair of Betsey Johnson Haylie sandals with sky high heels and covered platform for the bargain price of $45, regularly priced at $130. So now we are shoe twins! With shoes like this, who could blame us for buying the exact same pair? Plus, they are so super comfy it feels like you're wearing slippers.

We love the sweet rosebud print and the cute bow on the toe. The only downside is that we will have to wait until Spring to wear them.

We shopped until we dropped Saturday and had a blast. I'm sure you will be seeing my other purchases on here REAL soon!

Perfect Python Pencil Skirt

Last Fall Michael Kors had a python skirt in his line that I was completely obsessed with owning. I was unwilling to pay full price for it so I waited for it to go on sale or to for it to magically appear under my Christmas tree. By the time it went on sale, my size was sold out and it never did appear under that tree. So it has remained in my Dream Closet.

While out shopping with Tiffany this weekend I found a python skirt that is close enough to perfect for me. It's not Michael Kors but I'm not really hung up on designer names.

I found this beauty at The Limited and the best part (other than the close resemblance to the MK skirt) was the clearance sticker.

This skirt fits perfectly too. The exposed zipper on the back is a nice detail.

I plan to be wearing this to the office very soon!

New Betsey Johnson Pumps

I finally did it! I bought a pair of Betsey Johnson Pumps that also happen to be the perfect shade of aqua. My very first pair of spike heels were aqua from the Wild Pair. I was 16 years old and I was in Shoe Heaven! I wore them out, then threw them out many years ago but those heels made an indelible impression on my budding fashion soul.
When I saw these Betsey Johnson pumps in Macy's as a one of a kind clearance item in my size(!) I had to have them.

These are my very first pair of Betsey Johnson shoes and I think it very fitting
that I bought them in aqua. Regular price was $120 but they were marked down to 50% off > a steal at $60.
I wore these to work and while in a meeting, my co-worker Laurie said, "Those are lethal weapons!"
I love the silver on the spike of the heel and the leopard print on the sole.

So It Has Been Awhile.....

since I last posted. I needed to take some time off from the virtual life. Let me update you; just because I haven't posted doesn't mean I haven't been busy.
The Garden:
The garden was completed in late June. After many months of digging, hours of laying out and leveling blocks and laying down weed barrier, I had 7 cubic yards of enhanced topsoil delivered. Several weekends were spent spreading the dirt. Next it was off to buy the plants I knew I wanted in my garden and get them in the ground. Water twice daily. It was a bit past normal planting time, but I filled my bed anyway. Since then it has taken off. I haven't lost a single plant thus far.

Next Spring and Summer my plants should begin spreading out and filling the bed. Everything is perennial and either self-sows or comes back from roots and spreads (except for some bulbs) and the bushes are year round.
Once the garden project was complete, I discovered a new passion: kayaking!
Chris and I decided we needed a hobby to share, and we both wanted to get out on the water. We decided to rent kayaks for an afternoon to try it out. Here is Chris in his rented kayak out on the James.

A thunderstorm cropped up shortly after this photo was taken and we were paddling for our lives to get back in off the water. We got drenched and our adrenaline was pumping! We were hooked! The very next day we went out and bought our very own kayaks.
Oh yeah, several weeks prior to our kayaking excursion we bought a used Jeep Cherokee for our kids to use. Lucky for us we chose an SUV for them. Providence smiled upon us. No way are kayaks going on top of the Mini or my Infiniti coupe!

We brought our boats home, changed clothes, and went out to the river. After that we were out on the river every weekend, all summer long. We have kayaked the James River at Brown's Island, Robious, Watkins Landing, and Maidens. Maidens is our favorite. We even kayaked 13.1 miles from Maidens down to Watkins Landing and had our first taste of whitewater. That was exciting! Only Class I rapids, but our heart rates accelerated as we paddled over them. What a rush!

Every time we go out on the river we see something new. As we paddle along we wonder what the original settlers thought when they first went down the James. We think it is beautiful and soothing to be out in nature on your own self-propelled craft.

During my ten day trip to visit Sissie, I bought shoes. We also went out to eat and basically just enjoyed each other's company. She went to Vegas with me, too. We spent 4 days and 3 nights enjoying the sites and doing a little shopping.

I also joined the company co-ed softball team this Spring. That kept me busy and bruised clear through July.

I had alot of fun playing ball. I'm not the best, but I sure try. My position for most of the season was second base. We played two games every Wednesday night. By the time I got home, had food, and put ice on my new bruises I was way too tired to post or visit other blogs. I made some good friends and began to know my colleagues better. Most of my days in the office are spent in my cube so softball was a great way to meet other people in our company. Games and practice took the place of my time in the gym. Pictures were taken but I can't find them.

I took a break from shopping for most of the summer. Shopping had lost its joy for me so I stayed out of the mall and the thrift stores. The upside to that is my wallet growing fat to be ready for Fall fashion.

The last month I have spent preparing a new blog: Shoe Bitches! Shoe Bitches was born out my obvious love for shoes and boots. Many of my posts here on Fashion RECON have been focused on shoes. A blog dedicated to them just makes sense. My Fashion Sister Tiffany shares my passion for shoes and agreed to partner with me. So she and I are doing the Shoe Bitches blog together. We have just begun posting to the site and we are still tweaking our template, but we have high hopes for our new adventure.

In Memory of The Fashionable Miss Boo

Itsy Bitsy Boo was my dog for 8 years. She was the best dog I have ever owned. She accompanied me on many of my photo shoots. She suddenly died of congestive heart failure yesterday morning.
I am thankful for the privilege of being her "person". I will miss her terribly.

OOTD: Thrifted Dress in the Park

I purchased this dress while thrift shopping in Phoenix with my friend Sissie last year. I really like bright colors and the cut of this dress. We went to the park for a photoshoot and brought the dog for some exercise.

Bitty Boo enjoyed the opportunity be out and about on the end of her red leash.

I tortured my son Jonathan and made him be my photographer. I think he secretly enjoys it.

I started out with this 3/4 sleeve shrug from White House Black Market to keep my arms warm. Soon I was warm enough to shed the shrug...

The smocking on the bodice of the dress gives it great shape and the colors are bright and cheerful.

Monday Mashup: RVA Fashion Week Kickoff

Yesterday began RVA Fashion Week. To start off the week, there was a fashion show at Short Pump Town Center mall which I attended with Lindsay (@LML8) who I first met while participating in Project Style.

We had a great time and took a lot of photos. Seeing my fellow bloggers and fashionistas made my day..

Lindsey (@rvafashionista) and Larissa (@fromtherunwaytorva) attended as well. I am so happy I finally met Lindsey for real as I have been following her on Twitter for over a year.

Mendi and Jamie from Her Late Night Cravings also attended and said "Hi"

Several other bloggers were there too but I didn't get there photos. Shout out to Sydney of Chic Stripes and Tiffany of Shoes Champagne.

I took 180 pictures which is way too many to post. It was difficult to choose. Here are my highlights of the fashion show.

Ann Taylor sent the first selections down the runway and I surprised myself in how many of their items I liked.

I need these orange slacks in my life.

This black zipper dress I also really liked.

Bright bottoms are definitely hot on the runway. I loved the pink paired with the black and white striped blouse and yellow bag.

This model had the best walk. She moved like a slinking panther. It was totally sexy. I dream of floating along the way she did.

Cache was next and this model was fierce in this animal print dress.

I could see wearing this salmon dress in Vegas.

OOTD: Black and Taupe Lamb

Lately I haven't had much to say and thus Fashion RECON has been silent. My weekends have not been fashionable. I've only taken a few pictures. I just haven't been in the mood I guess.

So I will instead share with you my last pictures of the winter season.

Hopefully, I will get my voice back during Spring.

It was a rainy day and I wanted to wear my L.A.M.B. boots one last time.

My thoughtful son Aaron bought me these for Christmas.

I really love military styling and this vest is a must-have. I like that is wraps around the neck like a halter.

It has spandex in it so it fits well and is comfortable.

The black jeans I bought on clearance at the Limited for $12. I love them.

I can't promise how soon I will post again. I haven't been shopping lately and I won't be for awhile. I'm saving for my trip to Phoenix in May.

OOTD: Midday Scroll in Steve Madden Tights

I bought these tights last Fall in my local DSW and while I really like them I've only wore them a few times last year. They are eye-catching and unusual.

I finally broke them out again for the first time this season. It was a nice enough day for a stroll.

Here's a close up of the hosiery and the shoes.

I found these Nine West shoes on sale for $20 at Marshalls. They are suede and have great buckle detail on the side.

I chose this twisted necklace to accessorize my outfit because of the multiple chains and beads. I wanted to keep the rest of the outfit simple so as not to detract from the details in the tights.

Often netted tights will sag around the ankle area during wear. Not these! The best thing about the Steve Madden Scroll tights are that they cling to my legs.

I found the sweater at Charlotte Russe and bought it for the button detail on the sleeves and the fabulous teal color. The skirt I have owned forever and have no recollection of where I bought it.

I have really enjoyed the mild winter we have experienced here in Central VA but I am definitely looking forward to Spring. In the meantime, I plan to enjoy my boots, jackets, and sweaters until it is too warm to get away with it.

Shoesday: Casual Shoes for Men

Recently I was asked about casual shoes for men since I did a post for women last week. I felt obligated to head out to DSW again this weekend and photo shoe shop the current men's trends in casual shoes.

As I am a boot fiend, I had to check these out. I almost wished they came in my size! I love the look of the leather and the laces with a zip on the side.

These Sperrys also caught my eye as they are not what one traditionally thinks of when the name Sperry comes up. At least not around here. Here we think "boat shoes" or "topsiders". I like the light suede and the rough edge to the stitching and around the top.

These runners were interesting to me because of the thinner sole. For a good while there, the soles of running shoes were getting thicker and even included springs, air and gels in the soles for cushioning and support. Recent studies at Harvard and the book "Born to Run" have shoe makers returning to the thin running soles of the early 70s and 80s. "Born to Run" is an excellent book, even for those of us who are not runners.

I really like these grey Adidas. The bright aqua on the back of the shoe adds a nice touch of color. Unseen in the photo, the sole of this shoe is the same blue. I vote "very cool" for a casual weekend shoe.

If you are a man into bold shoes or just one who likes to stand out in the crowd, these bright blue and orange Adidas will work for you. I love color so you know I had to photograph these.

Here is a shoe for the ladies: Jessica Simpson pump like one featured last week but I think I prefer this color combination better. Black body with cobalt on the heel, aqua and tangerine on the platform. It would be perfect for me. Size 8 please!

The below Mary Jane styled flat I found on the ultra-clearance rack for 80% off the original $40 price. I purchased these for my daughter and she loved them. She put them on as soon as I gave them to her. Big Bubba is the brand.

Monday Mashup: Pampering & Plant Progress

There was no gardening for me this weekend and here is why:

My daughter has begun telling her friends that "Mom is building a pool" when asked about what is happening to the front beds. With the rains we received last week, it sure looks like I might be. I do have some good news concerning the plants I moved to new locations:

I moved my daffodils and grape hyacinth while they were "in the green" from the front flowerbeds down to the mailbox bed which was sorely needing plants. One is not supposed to move them once they begin to put up greenery. I did it anyway.

And they lived!! Not only have they not died > the hyacinth has begun to bloom! I think even the daffodils are going to bloom soon in this bed.

I do have some daffodils blooming by the driveway in a side bed. I love daffodils. They add a bright sunny spot to the yard in the early days of Spring when we are still prone to grey clouds and chilly weather.

Daylillies are very hardy and oftentimes in the South will be referred to as "ditch lillies" as they can be found growing in ditches along country roads and in the middle of the woods. Daylillies also proliferate like madness around here so I was very lazy in their transplantation.

I basically cut out big chunks of ground with the daylillies and placed them around the property in areas where I wouldn't mind if they take over. I didn't know if they would live to tell about it, but they seem to be doing fine. I can tell they have put forth more green shoots since I moved them.

I did the same thing with some daffodils and they also seem to be fine. So you can move them in the green but only if you don't disturb the dirt clod where they are currently growing. Just move plants with the dirt.

Since gardening was out of the question for me this weekend, I went out Saturday to the DSW. I bought some thigh high fishnets I plan to wear this week and a pair of tights with lace running up the sides. I look forward to wearing those too. Best part about that > both pair were 40% off.

Sunday I stayed inside and spent the day pampering myself.

I deep conditioned my hair with "It's a 10!" miracle hair mask:

This stuff is amazing and leaves my hair soft, silky and frizz free. I put it on then wrap my hair in a bun and cover with a plastic processing cap. I bought the container of it in August and use it about once a month. I still have enough left for at least two more applications. I really like this line of products. I also use the Styling Cream, Conditioner and the Keratin Spray. I don't use shampoo on my hair or I would buy that from them too.
Next up, while my hair was soaking in the hair mask goodness, I gave myself a mini-facial using Biore Pore Unclogging Scrub:

I have been using this for exfoliation for a long time. It really does work to keep skin blemish free. I don't use it every day, usually just once a week. My daily cleanser is by Obagi, but sometimes I need a little extra to prevent my skin from looking dull or to remove flaky skin that occurs from the retinol I use. Once I finished exfoliating, I applied organic coconut oil and a heating pad set on low and laid back to relax for about 15 minutes. This leaves my skin soft and supple. I'm fighting the clock every tick-tock of the way!!

I did my nails in Nail Rock Silver Metallic.

I had never used these but have wanted to try them for a while. I will have a review for these next week after I see how they hold up.

Brattlesnake: Sally Hansen Salon Effects Review

I have been wanting to try Sally Hansen Salon Effects ever since they came out and I have wanted a reptilian manicure since I saw the python manicure in Vogue magazine last spring. I have NOT wanted to spend $300 for a python manicure and have been hoping instead to find a way to get the same effect at home.

When I found these in CVS, I knew it was time to give Salon Effects a chance. There was only this ONE box of Brattlesnake available or I would have bought more.

I was rather nervous about this process as I had never tried it and I really wanted it to work. I heard that they are really easy to apply but one woman's easy is another woman's nightmare.
I took the plunge last Sunday afternoon and began to apply them after lurking several nail polish blogs and YouTube how-to videos. I was indeed surprised at how easily they applied. I took a photo of the first two applied:

The first was my pinky and I can see where maybe I should have gotten the strip closer to my cuticle. I was still pleased it applied easily and actually stayed on my nail. I had read some stories of the strip not sticking and worried, needlessly.

I completed my left hand with pleasing results. The right hand proved to be just as simple. I did not use a top coat over the nail strips as I wanted to see the results on their own as a standalone manicure.
Now for the test: how long would they last? would they chip? what would it look like over a coat of color polish?

I really wanted to know what these would be like if applied over a coat of colored polish. I wanted to follow the instructions and try on bare nails before attempting my own modification. Once I had them on my fingers, I decided to use the large strip for my big toe over a navy polish:

The polish strip applied quite easily on top of a coat of Sally Hansen Navy Baby polish. One large strip covered the big toenail of both feet. I like it!

Over the course of the week, I have showered, washed my hair, my face twice a day, done some dishes, and typed for hours at my computer every day at work. I've managed to bang my nails a couple times accidentally. How did the polish strips hold up?
Here are photos taken eight days after initial application:

My nails must grow pretty fast because you can already see around the cuticles where the nail is exposed. You can also see there is some wear at the very tip of the nail. That normally happens to me with regular polish anyway so no complaints.

I have decided to leave them on for another week to determine how they hold up. Regular polish would have been chip crazy by now.

Here are the nails on my right hand. This is the hand I use primarily and usually suffer from broken nails and polish chips fastest on this hand. Again, you can see Salon Effects stood up to the Yvonne Effect with no chips but some slight wear at the edge of the nail.

The box says the polish strips last up to 10 days and at this point I am ready to believe it. Unlike the NutraNail Gel polish which barely lasted a day, Salon Effects actually performs as advertised.

If you have been wondering if Salon Effects is worth the $10 purchase price and the effort to apply, my vote is YES. I still have another package left from the initial purchase to get a second manicure. So I will get two manicures for $10 without smudges, chips, polish on my skin and with relative ease. I didn't have to sit still for 30 minutes to prevent messing up my nails and that for me is a huge plus.

Next time I am thinking I want to apply the Brattlesnake strips over Chanel Peridot varnish.
