Newport Jazz (Newport, RI)

Austin City Limits (Austin, TX)

This summer festival might feel a bit late in the season, but we’d be remiss to not include it. Austin City Limits features a variety of artists from October 2–11 across multiple stages in Austin, Texas. The festival runs on two consecutive three-day weekends, highlights some of the most popular artists in the country along with up-and-coming artists from Texas.

Lollapalooza (Chicago, IL)

The longest-running music festival in the U.S, Lollapalooza, has become a pop culture and fashion moment that is beginning to rival Coachella. Fashion Reverie celebrates a Happy Juneteenth. For those who are not aware of this latest federal holiday, Juneteenth celebrates the date in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of slavery—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was announced.

While President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, it wasn’t immediately enforced in Confederate-controlled areas like Texas. It took until the end of the Civil War for Major General Gordon Granger to arrive in Galveston and read General Orders No. 3, officially notifying over 250,000 enslaved Black Texans they were free.

Juneteenth has been celebrated in African American communities for many decades but was not turned into a national holiday until 2021, signed into law by President Joseph Biden. Historically marked by prayer, spiritual singing, and reading the Emancipation Proclamation, festivities have evolved to include parades, family reunions, and historical reenactments.

The late great American Prima Ballerina Maria Tallchief once said that “If the Swan Queen is not good then it doesn’t matter how good the 32 swans dancing behind her is.” American Ballet Theatre proved her halfway wrong. Though Devon Teuscher as Odette/Odile in American Ballet Theatre’s (ABT) “Swan Lake” was superb, the swan corps de ballet also sparkled and shined. And it does matter that ABT’s swan corps de ballet is good, in fact, they are outstanding.

“Swan Lake” is one of the great warhorses of the classical ballet repertoire. Most ballerinas of any worth don’t feel as though they have earned the right to call themselves prima ballerinas until they have conquered “Swan Lake.” Still, one of the most forgotten elements of this great ballet classic is the precision and technical acuity needed to dance in the swan corps de ballet. Every swan is a reflection of Odette, the Swan Queen. And every step and port de bras must be exact. The corps de ballet must move as one with the same purpose.

Interestingly, ABT’s swan corps de ballet is not comprised of female dancers that look exactly alike. Some of the swans are taller, shorter, and more roundly feminine than others, giving the corps de ballet a projection of mature, adult swans. This is a+ change from bygone eras where artistic directors and coaches demanded uniformity in body composition.

ABT reflects a new era where uniformity is expressed in exactitude of movement and intention. And in this modern era that makes more sense.

What should also be noted is that this Thursday matinee performance the swan corps de ballet had three identifiable brown ballerinas, Madison Brown, Kyra Coco, and Aleisha Walker. These brown ballerinas in no way distracted from the uniformity and cohesiveness of the swan corps de ballet. This inclusion proves that we are in a new era in ballet—and we thank former ABT principal dancer Misty Copeland for this expansiveness.

Devon Teuscher as Odette/Odile brought a nuanced, seasoned portrayal. Every detail of her performance was on full display. From the undulation of her swan port de bras to the exquisite use of her well-stretched articulate feet to her well-projected mime sequences, this was a Swan Queen with intention. You felt her longing, her pathos, her vulnerability, and ultimately her surrender. And though she may be in the twilight of her career, Teuscher can still execute some fantastic double fouetté turns.

Jarod Curley as Prince Siegfreid did not match Teuscher seasoned Swan Queen. The technical brilliance is in place; however, Curley’s Siegfried is not yet well developed. Luckily for Curley his pairing with Teuscher got him through some of the rough spots.

Artistic Director Susan Jaffe and ABT’s rehearsal coaches are doing a fine job keeping the corps de ballet crisp and intentional. It takes an entire, commented cast to pull off “Swan Lake,” and a round of bravos are extended to American Ballet Theatre for keeping an old ballet classic fresh and vibrant.

 According to media reports—the New York Times, Deadline, People magazine, and E! Entertainment—Banks is suing the US streaming service Netflix over a documentary about the reality show “America’s Next Top Model (ANTM).” Court documents state that defamation of character is the source of the lawsuit.

The court documents detail that Banks gave three and a half hours of an interview in which only 16 minutes were used. According to Banks, the 16 minutes of statements that was used in Netflix’s “Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model” were “taken out of context and reassembled,” supporting the overall narrative that Banks exploited and mistreated the model contestants on ANTM.

According to Deadline and People magazine, Tyra Banks has requested a jury trial and damages for the emotional distress inflicted upon her. There has been no comment from Netflix.

Isaac and Target

Isaac Mizrahi has a new job. Mizrahi has been named Creative Director at Large of Target. He is the first designer to hold this position at Target.

Mizrahi will mentor young designer talent at Target while working alongside Senior Vice President Gena Fox offering creative input on new product concepts, design innovations, and emerging trends. Additionally, Mizrahi will assist Target in identifying and implementing new opportunities for partnerships, capabilities, and experiences.

BDK Parfums: This luxury Parisian niche fragrance house has just introduced Collection Studio, three Absolus de Parfum, crafted by perfumer Jordi Fernández of Givaudan in honor of BDK’s tenth anniversary. Each has a concentration ranging from 40% to 48%, which is remarkable; the average for a perfume (EDP) is 15-20%.

Givaudaun and his team combined rich raw materials in unexpected ways to create Oud Paradiso, Silver Ceremony, and Stellar Silk. Oud Paradiso is a departure from the heavy oud scents that have enjoyed popularity in the past 5 years. Paradiso adds bergamot and pineapple for a crisp and impactful scent journey.

Silver Ceremony is a punchy blend of bergamot, mandarin, ginger and pink pepper.

Stellar Silk is the most intriguing of the 3, inspired by the fluidity of Yves Saint Laurent and Valentino Garavani silk evening gowns. The sensual blend opens with creamy sandalwood, spicy ginger, cinnamon bark, and saffron enveloped in musk and sandalwood.

Chanel has been a player in the luxe fragrance space since Coco Chanel launched Chanel No5 in the spring of 1921. Over a century later, the house is still doing a gang-buster business with their new fragrances and scented body oils, both in the Les Exclusifs de Chanel fragrance family. Les Exclusifs de Chanel fragrances evoke various chapters of Mademoiselle Chanel’s story. Paris-Deauville EDT checks all the boxes for a fresh summer fragrance. In-House Perfumer Creator, Olivier Polge, describes Paris-Deauville as “a fresh, green and aromatic eau de toilette” of aromatic green facets of basil combined with sparkling top notes of Sicilian orange and bergamot.
