SINGAPORE - Spectacular show by The House of Herrera opened the fifth edition of Audi Fashion Festival 2013. The elegant collection featured peplum tops and dresses, stylish coats with fur collars, and sophisticated silk gowns. Textured fabrics and bright colours brought a fresh, youthful look to the collection.

Perfectly groomed models had their hair twisted into 1940s chignon rolls. This simple and chic hairstyle looked really good with the ladylike designs. The whole show was not only a great success, but also a truly memorable start to Audi Fashion Festival 2013.

Tsumori Chisato is a Japanese fashion designer. She attended Tokyo's Bunka Fashion College. She began working with Issey Miyake in 1977 and started her own line in 1990. She took her work to Paris in 2003 and has built a following in the United States.

"Red catches people's attention, and can be used either in a negative way to indicate danger and emergency, or in a positive way in advertising to gain more viewers, or in nature, as a ripe fruit announces its readiness with its red color. Several studies have indicated that red carries the strongest reaction of all the colors, with the level of reaction decreasing gradually with orange, yellow, and white, respectively. Because of this, red is often used to catch people's attention in a variety of situation.

In China, red (simplified Chinese: 红; traditional Chinese: 紅; pinyin: hóng) is the symbol of fire and the south (both south in general and Southern China specifically). It carries a largely positive connotation, being associated with courage, loyalty, honor, success, fortune,fertility, happiness, passion, and summer. In Chinese cultural traditions, red is associated with weddings (where brides traditionally wear red dresses) and red paper is also frequently used to wrap gifts of money or other things. Special red envelopes are specifically used during the Chinese New Year to give monetary gifts. The red color of the packet symbolizes good luck.

Red, corresponding with fire, symbolizes good fortune and joy. It is found everywhere during Chinese New Year and other holidays and family gatherings. Red is strictly forbidden at funerals as it is a traditionally symbolic color of happiness." (Wikipedia)

UT POP-UP! Singapore previewed on 3 May 2013

in an evening of fashion and music bonanza!

SINGAPORE - It was an evening filled with fashion, music and fun when UNIQLO officially launched UT POP-UP! Singapore to near 300 guests, consisting of members of the media, corporate partners, VIP guests and Noise Singapore's artists and fans.

Held at 72-13, the two-level rice warehouse and cultural relic was transformed into a fashion and musical stage for the night, where a mega display installation of over 1,000 UTs in 400 designs took centre stage. Guests also had fun posing at the UT Camera Booth, where their animated photos were uploaded on the global UT website.

Neil Chan, a local performer, kick-started the evening with an expert performance on his guitar, which captivated the audience. With audience attention rapt, Mr Albert Chew, Managing Director of UNIQLO (Singapore) Pte Ltd, delivered a speech filled with excitement about bringing UT into Singapore's culture and lifestyle, and about the special collaboration between UNIQLO and Noise Singapore.

The emcee then introduced the local budding photographers and designers from Noise Singapore, who had collaborated with UT POP-UP! to showcase their creative works.

As local band 53A entertained guests with pop music, the excited audience browsed the various UT designs on display, while some gathered at the UT Camera Booth to take animated photos, which were then projected live. At level 2, a wide selection of UTs were available for sale from $16.90, while special t-shirt designs by local designers from Noise Singapore were displayed for purchase at $15 each. Guests also redeemed complimentary badges after they had posed for the UT Camera.

It was indeed a memorable evening as virtually all guests found a UT that expresses their personality, out of the myriad of UTs showcased in a single location at UT POP-UP! Singapore. Coupled with delectable hors d'oeuvre, Perrier sparkling mineral water and premium champagne, guest relished the evening with style and gusto.

Contest: JStar & Tokyo Fashion Night

SINGAPORE - After the successful launch of its flagship store at Plaza Singapura, JRunway will host the JStar event to meet successful candidates and select its brand ambassador - JStar.

JStar is derived from the Fashion Community concept that JRunway brings from Japan. The concept that the community is where those who love fashion gather and is a place from which a new trend is born.

Application for JStar was launched on 21st November 2012 with the aim: to search for talented people; to search for a JRunway ambassador to represent the brand; and to establish JRunway in the world of fashion.

For the contest, more than 300 applications were received. Candidates who successfully went through internal selection and in-store voting will be invited to the next round to become a JStar finalist, who will play the role of a Japanese fashion icon (JRunway ambassador) with activities such as runway modeling, fashion blogging and new collection shooting.

The contest judges are Mr Ken Soda, CEO of model agency BARK in STYLe, Ms QiuQiu, a popular Singaporean fashion blogger and Mr Kenji Chigira, CEO of JRunway’s headquarter Apparel-web Inc. Contestants will be judged based on how they style themselves; how they present themselves for the professional shoot on stage; and how they perform at the Interview with the judges.

“I believe this will be a great opportunity to find and grow a talented Singaporean to start a modelling career. If he/she is suitable, I would like to invite him/her to my agency in Japan where he/she could flourish as a model. By doing so, Japan and Singapore will have more in common in the fashion industry and more fashion cultural exchange will be made. - commented Mr Soda.

Mr Chigira shared his thought: “I want our JStar to get to know more about Japanese fashion and to be a trend-setter in Singapore. Fashion in Japan has been growing owing to the support of fashion lovers. Consumers are the main players in creating trends and this is the unique and interesting feature of Japanese fashion. I hope such custom is recognized in Singapore as well, so that the fashion industry as a whole will be more and more active. ”

On JRunway’s 1st anniversary in November 2013, a grand winner will be chosen and be invited to 5 days of modeling experience in Japan and other premium prizes.

JStar After Party Tokyo Fashion Night by BARK in STYLe

Tokyo Fashion Night will be a collaboration with Japanese model agency BARK in STYLe on 15th May. Newly opened Japanese-concept club, Kyo, is the venue for this exciting party, where Japanese fashion and young culture contents will gather in one place to create a real fashion community and new trends begin through fashion cultural exchange between Japan and Singapore.

Tunes will be played by guest deejays from Japan; Go, Mikael and YUKIHIDE. A fashion show is programmed featuring guest models from Japan; TAKU, Kenji Kureyama and HIROSHI, as well asJStar contestants to showcase Japanese fashion. The event is sponsored by MUCOTA and Prime Group Asia, hosts of GOLD hair event which presents Japanese hair care products. At the end of the event, JStar finalists will be announced.

From daytime chic to night time glamour

Getting the right handbag, a necessary item of every woman’s life, is not always an easy task. When shopping for a new bag this season, you should consider a couple of things: functionality, style, and something that many women tend to forget about - your body type. Not every handbag is ideal for every woman.

Being tall and thin allows you to carry almost any style. A slouchy, rounded bag will be great to compliment your look. If you are on the heavier side, choose a handbag that is long and sleek or tall and rectangular. You should avoid bags that are too small, as they will look lost against your figure. The rounder your figure, the more structured your handbag needs to be. And remember: the size of your handbag should always be in proportion to your figure.

If you are splurging on an expensive bag, pick one that goes well with many items in your wardrobe so you will be able to wear it often. If you prefer to buy several inexpensive pieces, choose one classic everyday bag in black, brown or grey. Then, experiment with fun, unique styles and colours for your other bags. This season you should invest in at least one pastel bag: mint, baby blue or powder pink.

Inspiration - All Shades of Blue

To make your choice easier, I selected two trendy handbags from the rising UK retailer marc b. - one for the day and one for the night out. I took inspiration from the latest catwalk trends and chose the bags that combine the hottest looks with timeless elegance. I also tried to find items that are practical as for me real style comes with comfort.

For the evening, I chose a classic black handbag that is easy to match with a variety of clothes. Stunning gold details add a touch of chic and glamour.

Personal Note:

This Chanel inspired bag is not only stylish but also very practical. It has a perfect size to fit my Canon 1000D camera inside! So now when I attend fashion events I don't need to take my huge camera bag with me, but I can carry this small trendy handbag instead. Brilliant! :)

NEW YORK - Model Coco Rocha looked fabulous at the 2013 Met Ball, celebrating the “Punk: Chaos to Couture” exhibition at the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Canadian fashion model wore an Emanuel Ungaro by Fausto Puglisi leopard print gown embellished with gilded ornaments from the Fall-Winter 2013/2014 collection.

The Costume Institute Gala took place yesterday while the exhibition will be open to public from 9 May to 14 August 2013. Don't miss it!

Singapore’s annual premier fashion event, Audi Fashion Festival Singapore, marks its 5th anniversary this year with a move to a bigger & grander location. Celebrating the festival’s anniversary milestone, the festival will be held at Marina Promenade with a new waterfront location against the backdrop of Singapore’s skyline & a bigger tent that targets to attract more than 20,000 visitors, up from 13,200 in 2012.

From the world’s most revered designers and international top models to red carpet fashion galas and glamorous after-parties with headlining international acts, the Audi Fashion Festival will be the biggest fashion event of the year, with the support of the Singapore Tourism Board. In previous years, AFF showcased collections from world-known brands such as Christian Lacroix, Vivienne Westwood, Zac Posen, Mugler with Nicola Formichetti, Roland Mouret, Gareth Pugh, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Missoni, Ungaro, Erdem, DSquared, Roberto Cavalli as well as local fashion heroes like Raoul and alldressedup.

Themed “Crafting the Future”, this year’s festival will feature 5 days of shows featuring a mix of emerging and established top-class names from the international world of fashion including Carolina Herrera, Hussein Chalayan, Peter Pilotto, Tsumori Chisato, Collette Dinnigan, RAOUL, Ashley Isham, Zardoze, Jun Okamoto and Ong Shunmugam.

FESTIVAL DIRECTOR

Tjin Lee is the Managing Director and founder of Mercury Marketing & Communications, Singapore’s top lifestyle event company specialising in fashion, lifestyle and luxury events. In 2009, she founded the Audi Fashion Festival, bringing in shows by international designers Vivienne Westwood and Christian Lacroix, as well as upcoming fashion darling Gareth Pugh who also attended the event. In 2010, the Festival brought in Roberto Cavalli and DSquared2, together with their respective creative directors, Mr Cavalli and Dean and Dan Caten.

Ms Lee started her career in fashion and luxury lifestyle as part of the marketing team of Club 21, Singapore’s leading fashion retailer. In 2001, she decided to branch out on her own and started Mercury Marketing & Communications. Fashion is her passion and it drives everything she does. She is committed to building Singapore as a prestigious,

FESTIVAL CHAIRMAN

Spanning a 30 year career, Dick Lee has established himself as a celebrated and multiple award winning cultural and creative icon in Singapore and the region. Multi-talented Lee is renowned as a performer and composer, often recognised through his works as the spokesperson for the New Asian generation. Lee sits on the Board of the National Museum of Singapore and is also the Associate Artistic Director of the Singapore Repertory Theatre, a position that he has held since 1998.

AFF is honored to welcome fashion’s leading lady Carolina Herrera, for the first time, to Audi Fashion Festival. The designer will be accompanied by her daughter Carolina Herrera de Baez, Creative Director for Fragrances and CH Carolina Herrera, to present her Fall 2013 runway collections. The House of Herrera show will take place on May 15th and will feature looks from the Carolina Herrera New York ready-to-wear and bridal collections as well as CH Carolina Herrera, the lifestyle ready-to-wear and accessory collection for men and women.

Presiding over a global fashion empire, Carolina Herrera is recognized for her timeless elegance and sophistication. Adored by countless celebrities such as Katie Holmes, Renee Zellweger and Amy Adams, she is revered by the fashion industry and a true fashion icon in her own right. She was awarded the CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year in 2004 and the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008. Acting as a mentor and critic to graduating design students for years, Herrera received an honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from the Fashion Institute of Technology. Most recently, Renee Zellweger presented Carolina Herrera with the 2012 Fashion Group International Superstar Award.

The festival will be presenting Singapore’s very own, RAOUL. After a successful show at the recent Milan Fashion Week, RAOUL will be presenting their Autumn/Winter 2013 collection at the festival. To up the glamour ante, the festival will be inviting Victoria’s Secret Supermodel, Erin Heatherton, to open for Singapore’s very own home-grown label. The American beauty has been spotted on the runways for Victoria’s Secret, Oscar de la Renta and Jason Wu. She has also fronted the campaigns for H&M, John Galliano Lingerie & Beachwear, Armani Jeans and Valentino.

Desigual, a Spanish brand based in Barcelona, is characterised by its different, optimistic and colourful designs. The company began trading in 1984 using the slogan: 'Desigual is not the same'. In 2011 Desigual started collaborating with the French designer Christian Lacroix. In June 2011 the company signed a worldwide partnership with Cirque du Soleil to develop a clothing collection named Desigual inspired by Cirque du Soleil including 60 items of clothing and accessories. Last year Desigual ended the year with 330 of its own store worldwide, 9,000 multi-brand stores and 2,200 retail corners in department stores in over 90 countries.

Desigual has a philosophy based on positivity, tolerance, commitment and fun. It's new Autumn/Winter 13-14 collection "We Love" which shows the brand's love for women and femininity. Singapore-based independent fashion label, Zardozë, will debut their first-ever show at the festival with their Fall/Winter 2013 and Panthea 2013 collections. This year, the Zardozë brand engaged rising-star and 2011 Star Creation winner Chen Zhigang as the lead designer for the line who will work under the guidance of the brand’s Creative Director, John Paul Rangel. The show will close with a show-stopping, one-of-a-kind diamond dress. Made in an atelier in Paris, it features 130-carat of diamonds and is valued at over half a million dollars.

Tsumori Chisato

Tsumori Chisato will be showcasing her Autumn/Winter 2013 collection and guests can expect to see Chisato’s signature style of luxurious textiles, intricate beading, embroidery, appliqués and prints on her designs. Chisato started her own line in 1990, under the encouragement from her mentor, Issey Miyake, and has since shown on runways around the world. Kiko Mizuhara, Nicki Minaj , Lynn Xiong, Niki Chow and Kathy Chow are amongst the list of celebrities seen in Chisato’s designs.

London-based, Singaporean designer, Ashley Isham, returns to the AFF tent with his Autumn/Winter 2013 collection which proves to be a breakthrough. Recognised for his signature draping and strong tailoring, Isham’s distinctive blend of glamour and styling has won him many loyal fans. Celebrities spotted in his designs include Florence Welch, Christina Aguilera, Kylie Minogue and Lady Gaga.

In the short time span since the brand’s conception in 2008, the design duo behind the brand, Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vos, has already taken the fashion world by storm. Today, Hussein Chalayan is also the creative director of PUMA and has collaborated with the sportswear brand on their Black Label.

Summer Coming Through The Door

Look at your calendar right now and realize that summer season is only in one month from now. But that’s “official” summer, don’t mix it up with actual summer. And that, my ladies, is just around the corner. The weather is getting warmer; the layers of clothes are getting lighter. So, now you need to figure out what is out there that you could wear for this summer fair.

LINES LINES LINES

All the designers this Spring/Summer season decided to go with the classic lines. Vertical or horizontal – no one cares, as long as you spice it up with colors. Yeah, black and white is a classic, but how about white and red? Or white and yellow? Just a little reminder: vertical lines look good on the bottom and they elongate your legs and horizontal lines are for the upper body.

Polka Dot

And yet another classic look is back in style and fashion runways. This time it is only black and white. Remember the polka dot dresses in the 60s? Look at the photo – this is going to be your pick of the season and a dress with polka dot design, or a skirt, will stay in your closet forever and will never go out of style.

Patterns

And in this one you could play around. From Louis Vuitton’s new collection in checkers to abstract patterns, animal prints, tropical and of course floral and original pattern with optical illusions – these are the trends of this summer. And don’t forget to mix and match. Play around a bit, but play it safe, these patterns are unforgivable. Decide on the color pattern first and that will help create something original.

Punk

God Save the Queen! Old school punk is back again this summer season. If you are a daredevil – take out your old clothes that has holes in it, or make them yourself, leather jacket, before it gets pretty hot outside and mix it with big army boots – you’ll be ready to look anarchistic. Punk is a style with and without a style. You could be completely right and completely wrong. My advice – don’t overdo it, especially if you are a sweet little girl. Baby steps, ladies, baby steps. Most of us own a leather jacket. I even have one with studs. I wear it every single day, just because I love it, not because I used to be a punk in my teens (it is still somewhere there). As a teen, who liked punk sub-culture, with a French sense of style, that my mom gave me, it was really hard to combine both, fashion and punk. But as I got older I realized – punk is not only anarchy, loud music and style of life. Punk is simplicity in everything. Don’t overthink it. Feel it. That’s all that matters.

Fashion on its own is simple. You actually have to feel what you are wearing. You have to believe in it and in yourself. And that’s when you won’t need the designers to tell you what to wear; you would wear it before all the magazines would say that it in this season. Be yourself and make new rules in fashion.

TORONTO - Mackage is a Canadian brand run by two childhood friends: Eran Elfassy and Elisa Dahan. Season after season, the design duo based in Montreal offers classic outwear and ready-to-wear designs with a sexy and modern edge. Sleek silhouettes quickly became the brand's signature.

Their Spring/Summer 2013 collection features high-waisted shorts, pencil skirts, and narrow trousers. All items are combined with trendy coats and leather biker jackets. Interesting colour palette, from grey and mint to yellow and brown (with occasional elements of classic black) makes this collection fresh and sophisticated. Mackage not only proved that leather can work for different seasons, but also succeeded in re-inventing your standard spring coat. Well done!

TOKYO, JAPAN - During my trip to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week TOKYO last year, I had a chance to browse around the city and discover a lot of amazing fashion boutiques, stylish bars & restaurants, and unique design stores.

One of them was Francfranc, a trendy shop located in Ayoama, which combines fashion with interior design. This Japanese company is well-known for their creative visual merchandising. They had so many interesting products that I couldn't help taking out my camera to capture some of them for you!

The store itself is spacious and nicely designed. The elegant entrance grabbed my attention from the other side of the street :)

ABOUT

Francfranc, a Japanese brand founded in 1992, proposes home furnishing products that accentuate space management through coordination of stylish while practical designed items. The concept of Francfranc is "Casual Stylish". Their trendy products create enriched spaces for an enjoyable daily life.

This trendsetting store that became a gia Global Honoree in 2011, gets the message across loud and clear: interiors should be enjoyed in the same way that fashion is. Innovation is key to their success, and the merging of fashion and retail is how they stay ahead of the game.

Bright, light, open, funky, cool and casually chic… all of these words sum up what Francfranc in Japan is all about – this forward-thinking business (under the umbrella of the BALS Corporation) aims to bring homewares to its customers in a fashion-conscious way that is often only explored by up-market clothing boutiques. The furniture, interior décor and housewares products are presented in the same way that stores selling great fashion would present their wares: with a focus on how the pieces could bring value, fun, innovation and color to a person’s life.

Martin M. Pegler, a professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York in the Display & Exhibit Design Department and a leading expert in his field for over 50 years, admits that Japanese stores have always held a deep fascination for him, and he highly commended Francfranc’s approach to visual merchandising. “The displays such as ones created by Francfranc, when professionally done, are minor works of art”, he says. “‘Shibui’ is the term that I think describes them; elegant, tasteful, serene and simple. What I was so pleased to see at Francfranc was that the displays that appeared throughout were commercial. They were selling tools – product oriented, yet still done with taste and simplicity. The architects allowed floor space for elevated display areas on the main floor where promotional collections of product could be featured.”

In their own words, Francfranc “targets an audience with youthful minds who embrace fashion trends, design and art to elevate their lives”, and they have done a great job in achieving this. Using elaborate staging for visual merchandising, the continual updating of product displays and a wide variety of interior decorations and fixtures, every element of Francfranc goes towards ensuring visitors enjoy a unique shopping experience.

Adaptation to great changes is continually afoot when it comes to this business. Francfranc was recently re-structured under a ‘re-branding’ project, changing the retail development strategy so that the gia-winning store in Tokyo became a standalone flagship shop. This project resulted in the company scooping an award in 2010 at the Mainichi Fashion Grand Prix – a prestigious industry award presented by Tokyo's Mainichi newspaper. “Through these efforts and this award, Francfranc has positively combined fashion with home-furnishing,” says Miyuki Ando, the secretary of BALS Corporation.

After a year of awards and with the establishment of a Francfranc store in Shanghai, China, the company has attracted a lot of attention, and there are certainly more big things on the horizon. They are busily planning their expansion across Asia and into other overseas markets, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a Francfranc in cities such as London and New York one day soon.

Mounted in Villa Les Rhumbs in Granville, where Christian Dior spent his childhood, the exhibition will attempt to show how this couturier's designs were partially linked to the Impressionist movement.

It will exhibit some of Christian Dior's creations and photographs of his garden, revealing the extent to which Dior was aware of the natural environment and the themes of light and reflections, just as the Impressionist painters had been.

“Best of Archive” opens at the Getty Images Gallery

LONDON, UK - Getty Images Gallery is delighted to announce the launch of its latest exhibition celebrating a selection of unique and iconic imagery from the Getty Images Archive, the world’s largest commercial photography archive with a collection of over 90 million images.

The exhibition, Best of Archive, offers a glimpse into a historical and extremely valuable treasure trove of imagery, including vintage prints dating from the late 19th century. With over 90 million images, of which just 0.1 per cent are digitized, Best of Archive brings this magnificent collection alive and in front of Londoners.

In addition to a number of the most iconic and popular images from the archive, the exhibition will also feature lesser seen work by Getty Images’ most cherished archive photographers, including Bert Hardy, Eugene Robert Richee, with estate-stamped and signed prints from Ernst Haas and Slim Aarons. The exceptional photographic content ranges from reportage and social documentary, fashion and portraiture, cultural commentary to architectural studies.

Each of the images illustrates an engagement with the world – a face from a troubled time looking you in the eye, or a moment of joy caught forever dancing. Many were designed to be part of a series, but away from this context they are able to stand alone as a visually arresting image in their own right.

The exhibition will also showcase rarely seen original contact sheets. These illustrate the working methods of the photographer or editor, revealing the detailed processes of photography that have been lost to the digital age.

We are delighted that this collection will give our visitors a flavor of the quality and scale of the archive.”

Punk Fashion Will be Focus of Spring 2013 Costume Institute Exhibition at Metropolitan Museum

NEW YORK - The spring 2013 exhibition organized by The Costume Institute of The Metropolitan Museum of Art will be PUNK: Chaos to Couture. The exhibition, on view from May 9 through August 14, 2013 (preceded on May 6 by The Costume Institute Benefit), will examine punk’s impact on high fashion from the movement’s birth in the 1970s through its continuing influence today.

“Punk’s signature mixing of references was fueled by artistic developments such as Dada and postmodernism,” said Thomas P. Campbell, Director and CEO of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, “so it makes sense to present this exhibition in a museum that also shows the broader output of those movements. Indeed, that dialogue between art and fashion is what makes The Costume Institute so singular. Projects like this don’t happen without sponsorship, and we greatly appreciate the generosity of Moda Operandi, and its co-founders Aslaug Magnusdottir and Lauren Santo Domingo.”

To celebrate the opening of the exhibition, the Museum's Costume Institute Benefit will take place on Monday, May 6, 2013. Beyoncé will serve as Honorary Chair. Co-Chairs will be Academy Award© nominated actress Rooney Mara; Lauren Santo Domingo, Co-Founder of Moda Operandi; Riccardo Tisci, Creative Director of Givenchy; and Anna Wintour, Editor-in-Chief of Vogue. This fundraising event is The Costume Institute’s main source of annual funding for exhibitions, acquisitions, and capital improvements.

“Since its origins, punk has had an incendiary influence on fashion,” said Andrew Bolton, Curator in The Costume Institute. “Although punk’s democracy stands in opposition to fashion’s autocracy, designers continue to appropriate punk’s aesthetic vocabulary to capture its youthful rebelliousness and aggressive forcefulness.”

Exhibition Overview

The exhibition, in the Museum’s second-floor Cantor galleries, will feature approximately 100 designs for men and women. Original punk garments from the mid-1970s will be juxtaposed with recent, directional fashion to illustrate how haute couture and ready-to-wear have borrowed punk’s visual symbols, with paillettes being replaced with safety pins, feathers with razor blades, and bugle beads with studs. Focusing on the relationship between the punk concept of 'do-it-yourself' and the couture concept of 'made-to-measure,' the exhibition will be organized around the materials, techniques, and embellishments associated with the anti-establishment style. Presented as an immersive multimedia, multisensory experience, the clothes will be animated with period music videos and soundscaping audio techniques.

Organized thematically, each of the seven galleries will have designated punk ‘heroes’ who embody the broader concepts behind the fashions on view. The first gallery will be devoted to CBGB in New York City, represented by Blondie, Richard Hell, The Ramones, and Patti Smith. Next will be a gallery inspired by Malcolm McClaren and Vivienne Westwood and their Seditionaries boutique at 430 King’s Road in London. The Clothes for Heroes gallery, embodied by Jordan, will examine designers who extend the visual language of punk, as it was originally articulated by McLaren and Westwood, by merging social realism with artistic expression.

Do-it-yourself, punk’s enduring contribution to high fashion, will be explored in the four final galleries: D.I.Y. Hardware, focusing on couture’s use of studs, spikes, chains, zippers, padlocks, safety pins, and razor blades, with Sid Vicious as its icon; D.I.Y. Bricolage, highlighting the impact of punk’s ethos of customization on high fashion, including the use of recycled materials from trash and consumer culture, as epitomized by Wayne County; D.I.Y. Graffiti and Agitprop, exploring punk’s tradition of provocation and confrontation through images and text exemplified by The Clash; and D.I.Y. Destroy, examining the effect of punk’s rip-it-to-shreds spirit, typified by Johnny Rotten, via torn and shredded garments associated with deconstructionism.

Designers in the exhibition will include Miguel Adrover, Thom Browne, Christopher Bailey (Burberry), Hussein Chalayan, Francisco Costa (Calvin Klein), Christophe Decarnin (Balmain), Ann Demeulemeester, Dior, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana (Dolce and Gabbana), John Galliano, Nicolas Ghesquière (Balenciaga), Katharine Hamnett, Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren (Viktor & Rolf), Christopher Kane, Rei Kawakubo (Comme des Garçons), Karl Lagerfeld (Chanel), Helmut Lang, Martin Margiela, Malcolm McLaren, Alexander McQueen, Franco Moschino and Rossella Jardini (Moschino), Kate and Laura Mulleavy (Rodarte), Miuccia Prada, Gareth Pugh, Zandra Rhodes, Hedi Slimane (Saint Laurent), Stephen Sprouse, Jun Takahashi (Undercover), Joseph Thimister, Riccardo Tisci (Givenchy), Gianni Versace, Junya Watanabe, Yohji Yamamoto, and Vivienne Westwood.

The exhibition is organized by Andrew Bolton, Curator, in the Met’s Costume Institute. Photographer Nick Knight is the exhibition’s creative consultant working with exhibition design consultant Sam Gainsbury (who was creative director for the Met’s Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty exhibition in 2011) and production designer Gideon Ponte (a set and production designer for photo shoots and feature films including Buffalo 66 andAmerican Psycho). All mannequin head treatments and masks will be designed by Guido Palau, who also created treatments for Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty and last year’s Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations.

The design for the 2013 Costume Institute gala benefit will be created by Nick Knight, Sam Gainsbury, and Gideon Ponte with Raul Avila, who has produced the benefit décor since 2007. Additional funding for the gala benefit will be provided by Givenchy.

A book, Punk: Chaos to Couture, by Andrew Bolton, with an introduction by Jon Savage, and prefaces by Richard Hell and John Lydon (a.k.a. Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols), will accompany the exhibition. This publication will be illustrated with photographs of vintage punks and high fashion. Published by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the $45 catalogue (hard cover only) will be distributed worldwide by Yale University Press.
