Juxtaposed to much of winter’s hard edged fashion (punks, eighties power dressing and architectural tailoring) emerged a softer side to the season. Easy luxe pieces in the shape of oversize knits, slouchy trousers, the must-have new camel coat and the return of velvet as a catwalk trend for autumn/winter 09.

Sculptural Knits (Vivienne Westwood Red Label)
Vivienne Westwood’s red label in London was all about Slouch Living – in sexy yet comfortable clothes. But never one to shy away from drama Dame Vivienne’s knits are meant to be shown off– not kept for a weekend at home. Cue asymmetric angles on wrap around cardigans, angular necklines and graphic prints.

Velvet (Ellie Saab)

Velvet made a catwalk comeback for autumn/winter 09. For the festive party season it will be key, never more so than in as a show stopping black number. Needing little else, Ellie Saab kept to clean lines and little adornment – the modern way to wear this rich texture.

Slouchy Trousers (DKNY)

Trousers continue to be a fashion must have, and for autumn/winter 09 summer’s essential peg leg and harem pant shapes evolved in to slouchy yet sophisticated strides. DKNY got the proportions of this look just right by teaming the new slouchy bottoms with a fitted jacket, balancing out the volume and creating a slim line silhouette.

The Camel Coat (Max Mara)

The camel coat was the winter coat at the international collections. Understated, luxurious and expensive looking, camel is the new black. It appeared in New York, London and Paris, but it’s most perfect catwalk incarnation was at Max Mara in Milan – the quintessential label for chic, understated luxe.

The Cape (DKNY)

DKNY showed capes to get carried away in. The perfect cover-up for any shape or size, in grey wool this was our favorite cape of the season. A cape is just that little bit darker, edgier than a coat – and this season it’s all about adding a little spike to your look and creating a leaner, meaner silhouette.

The Sharp Shoulder (Balmain)

This is the season of the shoulder - declared most fiercely at Balmain in Paris. Star trek meets Pierre Cardin sums up the look which saw angular shoulders jutting from the runway.

But it was sexy not scary the Balmain way, and your stores have this shape off pat. These bold shoulders are the frame from which the rest of your outfit will hang, elongating the body and slimming the hips, so try in the fitting room and see what you think.

Scaffold Tailoring (Givenchy)

Givenchy’s Creative Director Riccardo Tisci has a dark side. But he uses it to create strikingly beautiful clothes for women. His almost entirely black show (there was only navy, cream, black and white) was, said the designer back stage, ‘all about showing the different forms of woman’. His structured tailoring did this, and then some.
Techno Florals (Nicole Farhi)

Nicole Fahri enjoyed something of a renaissance at London Fashion Week in February. A new design team has injected a modern edge in to the British label. Standing out amongst the new looks were Farhi’s techno florals. Pixilated petal prints are the modern way to wear flowers now, and printed on metallic fabrics hers shone.

Jewellery designers plan the style and pattern of jewellery, silverware and other decorative metalwork products. The designs may be for mass production, or be made individually or in small numbers by the designer or by other craftworkers.

Jewellery designers produce designs which either:
meet the requirements of a client (known as a 'brief'); or
have the potential to attract customers.

Self-employed designers often both design and make jewellery. They the sell it through outlets such as shops, galleries and craft fairs.
Jewellery making involves a variety of crafts, including:

Hours and Envirenment

Jewellery designers in industry usually work 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. Freelance designers decide their own hours depending on the amount of work they have.

Designers work in studios or workshops, which may be shared with other designers. Freelance designers also spend time at exhibitions or visiting shops and galleries to market their work.

Skills and Interests

To be a jewellery designer you should:
be creative, with an appreciation of colour, shape and texture
understanding of metals, gemstones and other materials
have dexterity, good hand eye co-ordination and the ability to work with tools and materials
be able to work accurately and pay attention to detail
have the confidence and temperament to succeed in the commercial world

have numerical skills for measuring, calculating costs of materials and pricing items,/
marketing skills and commercial awareness for self-employment
be able to negotiate with buyers and suppliers. Training
As a designer you will need to develop your skills on an on-going basis, and to keep up to date with new trends and methods. If you are employed by a company they may provide in-house training.
You can also do part-time courses in specialist areas of the work at many colleges. You can get details of these from the JAITC.
You could also do a postgraduate course, such as MA in Silversmithing, Jewellery and Allied Crafts.

There is a large market for jewelry in which not only small workshops and individuals participate, but also design studios with their own distribution channels, specialized jewelry companies, and fashion, perfume, or accessory firms that successfully market jewelry under their labels. Some jewelry makers strive to be artists, others consider themselves craftsmen, and yet others identify as designers.

Even among the latter category there are usually further distinctions made between those who produce small series (even limited and/or signed editions) and those who design for mass production by companies. In defining jewelry design, it is useful to review the etymology of the word “jewelry.”

The German word for jewelry, Schmuck, is related to the English verb “to smuggle.” This root indicates that the definition of the term “jewelry” may have evolved gradually over time, from something to be guarded as treasure to an exhibition piece intended to lend its wearer status and poise.

The English word is of course tied closely to “jewels” (very much in the spirit of Marilyn Monroe’s song “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend”) though the way we understand jewelry today is by no means limited to the use of jewels or even precious metals, but includes nearly every conceivable material including plastics, paper, rubber bands, and cardboard. The increasingly open-ended definition of the product has enabled the design to develop new standards of value for jewelry.

From the Middle Ages until the Art Nouveau era of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, jewelry’s central value was identified almost exclusively by the costliness of its materials. Today, composition, originality, innovation, and distinctiveness are increasingly important in the determining value.

This shift has at times led to conflicts between traditional jewelry makers and their markets. A consideration of jewelry’s significance also opens up divergent perspectives. Jewelry can be valued quite simply as a financial investment (especially when jewels, gold, silver, and platinum are used), a playful form of dressing up, or a symbolic artifact reinforcing aspect and respect. This latter application is striking in monarchic, political, and military contexts in particular, with their use of crowns, scepters, and medals as insignia of power and influence. These symbolic applications are evident within the context of everyday use, as well.

As with clothing, jewelry may represent its wearer as rich, fashionable, and striking; lend poise and form to the body; create equilibrium or deliberate asymmetry. At the same time, jewelry can serve to draw attention to whatever one wants to emphasize: the ears, neck, dØcolletage, wrists, and in rare cases feet and toes (with the increased popularity of piercing extending the spectrum of possibilities even further).

Obviously we cannot give an infinte number of styles, but we can give variety, with chunky, unusual, beautiful, gentle, fun, and quirky pieces included in our range.

Selection

When we design pieces each bead, chip or stone is carefully selected to produce a balanced result, both in form, colour and weight.
Catches

We carefully select our catches to suit the weight and colour of the piece, and try where possible to use extendable catches to cater for different neck sizes and shapes. If you have a problem with a particular catch please let us know
Please note: magnetic catches and beads must not be worn by those using pacemakers.
Where we use magnetic catches this fact will be noted in the jewellery description. At present we do not use magnetic beads, but if we do this will also be noted in the jewellery description.
Variation
Many of the materials we use are individually handmade such as, the Hilltribe pendants and individually embossed and cut linked chain. Most of our Bali Silver Beads are individually crafted by silver artisans. The gemstones we use are natural materials and as such subject to natural inclusions and variances in colour and cut, and many of our glass beads are also handcrafted in small quantities and again subject to slight variation. Variations in machine manufactured items are usually considered faults, but the variations above are not faults but the result of individual treatment.
Descriptions
All products are photographed in full colour, but small variations in colour and size may occur between the beads in a piece of jewellery. Slight colour and size differences can occur between batches of beads. Sizes are approximate. Every effort has been made to ensure descriptions are correct, product descriptions such as 'gold', 'silver', 'copper', etc are subjective colour descriptions and do not relate to the materials. Sterling Silver and 9k gold items will be clearly stated as such.
Jewellery uses
Beads may discolour over time; we cannot guarantee they will remain colourfast indefinitely. Whether an item will lose its colour if put through the wash, used for outdoors projects or similar 'out of the ordinary' uses, we have no way of knowing and cannot guarantee they will remain colourfast.
All our pieces are designed to sustain normal light wear. The individual links are generally not soldered so will not sustain unreasonable force.

Daimond Tanzanite

Tanzanite was unknown till 1967. It was discovered on the slopes of Kilimanjaro at the foot of the Merelani Hills, Tanzania – the only place in the world to mine Tanzanite.
Tanzanite is the name of the blue variety of the mineral Zoisite and it is believed to be 600 million years old.

COLOUR GRADING
Tanzanite can show a dominance of intensity of either Blue or Violet or a combination thereof. When colour grading the dominant colour (HUE) of the stone will be mentioned last e.g. Blue-Violet (Violet being the dominant colour) and Violet-Blue (Blue being the dominant colour).

There are five categories of saturation (the strength of the hue). Vivid being the darkest colour on the grading scale and pale being the lightest.

Each stone is carefully graded against the Grading Master Set to achieve the correct colour grade.

CLARITY

Clarity - Refers to the imperfections that may occur in the stone.
LC: Loupe Clean - No internal inclusions visible using 10x magnification. The stone may have small abrasions that are invisible to the naked eye.
EC: Eye Clean - Minor internal inclusions and external abrasions not visible to the naked eye.
LI: Lightly Included - Minor noticeable inclusions that can be seen with the naked eye.
MI: Moderately Included - Larger noticeable inclusions that can be easily seen with the naked eye and have a negative affect on appearance.
HI: Heavily Included - Inclusions that cover majority of stone and have a serious affect on appearance.

Complexion Care in Winter - Makeup Tips

Winter is dreaded by many because usually it brings a challenge to every complexion, but you can look your best if you take a few precautions. During the winter months your complexion needs extra care and attention because the oil glands just below the surface of the skin become relatively inactive and produce less moisture than usual. This and the increased dryness of the skin due to the drying effects of the sun and the wind are responsible for causing the tiny wrinkles and giving rise to various skin ailments like scaling, itching, chapping and eczema.

The best way, however, to counteract these ailments is to dispense with the use of soap completely, because it has been known to have a marked degreasing action on the skin. Instead, clean your face with milk cream or top-of-milk blended with a few drops of lime juice and a pinch of turmeric powder. Excessive use of cosmetics, hair dyes and sprays, too many hot baths and perfumes also make the hair dry. Every night before going to bed, take one tablespoon of milk cream and mix in a few drops each of glycerine, olive oil and rose water. Mix well and apply over your entire face, neck and hands. Leave overnight; in the morning wipe off gently with a tissue paper, then bathe the skin in warm water until it begins to feel warm and also rinse for the same length of time in cold water. Pat dry with a soft towel.

Also, massage your body well with olive or coconut oil blended with a few drops of rose water 10 minutes before your bath to make your skin soft and glowing. If dryness has resulted in scaling, take foods rich in vitamin A, because this vitamin is stored in the fat just below the surface of the skin counteracting any tendency towards dryness and roughness. In case the scaling is quite severe, also take this vitamin in the form of tablets but as this vitamin sometimes produces toxic effects in the body if taken indiscriminately, it should only be taken under medical supervision.

Another common skin ailment in winter is eczema. Initially the surface of the skin becomes red but later it turns dry, rough and scaly. Here are two effective remedies for this ailment. Grind a walnut to a paste, squeeze out its oil and apply on the affected parts a few times daily. In case this does not give relief, try this remedy.

Take a dry coconut and hold it with a pair of tongs over a burning flame. When its skin turns completely black and while it is still burning, place it on a tin-plate and cover it immediately with a small vessel. Remove it after a few seconds and you will find a layer of oil on the vessel. Rub this on the affected parts twice daily and within a week you will find definite relief in your condition. Itching too is a common complaint during this weather. Take a tablespoon of sandalwood oil and mix in an equal quantity of coconut oil. Apply on the itching parts of the body a couple of times daily until you get relief. The juice of Basil leaves is also equally effective.

Another type of itching which is very severe is known as winter's itch. This is usually due to the excessive dryness of the skin. It is also due to wearing too many woolen garments, too many hot baths, too little sun, lack of sweating, too much use of soaps and scent and dietary deficiencies. Arms and legs are commonly affected by it. To minimize winter's itch, every day an hour before taking your bath take two tablespoons each of curd and olive oil and mix in a few drops of essence of rose. Mix well and apply on the body an hour before you take your bath. Abstain from wearing woolens next to the body. Reduce hot baths and. the use of the soap to the minimum. Take vitamin A in the form of tablets and expose yourself to the sun for at least an hour daily. It automatically disappears in the warm weather because perspiration caused by the heat helps to keep the skin soft and moist.

If the skin on the soles of your feet becomes hard and cracked, rub the soles at bath time with soapy water and pumice stone. After bathing be sure to dry the feet well especially between the toes to prevent cracking. Massage them well with olive or coconut oil to keep the skin soft and smooth and to help the circulation of blood. After exposure to cold, take a foot bath using warm water and soap. Wipe dry, massage them vigorously for five minutes and then wear woolen socks. This is very important to prevent chilblains.

If your lips happen to chap, peel or crack, here is an effective remedy.

Take a rose flower and grind the petals to a paste. Mix in a little cream of milk and apply it generously on the lips before going to bed in the night. This will help keep the lips soft and pretty. Dry, itchy skin around the mouth is a common complaint during winter. Vitamin B tablets will help in this case. To protect your hands from rash and chapping wear a pair of rubber gloves when doing household chores. Every night before going to bed take an equal quantity of lime juice, glycerine, rose water and Cologne and apply nicely on the hands and after you finish your household chores rub glycerine and sugar on them for a couple of minutes and then wash off. This will help keep them soft and smooth.

Winter plays havoc with the hair, making it dry, brittle and dull. To bring a healthy shine to your hair, take some warm coconut oil, make partings along the hair and dab it along each parting with your finger-tips. Continue in this way till the whole scalp has been oiled, then wrap hot towels over the head to keep the scalp as warm as possible. After half an hour when the scalp has absorbed oil, wash the hair with shikakai and water Hair can never be completely clean and shiny until it is rinsed thoroughly-it should squeak at your touch.

The basic sculpting method involves highlighting and contouring the face. Basically, everything you highlight comes forward and everything you contour stays in the background. So in short, you want to highlight your good features and contour the ones you want to hide. To start, you’ll need three different shades of foundation/powder in three different depth levels:

The first foundation shade should match your skin exactly.

The second shade which should be your highlight color, should be one level lighter than the first, preferably with the same undertone.

The last shade which is your contouring color, should be one level darker than the first, again preferably with the same undertone.

The diagram above should help you with the placement of the foundation. The most important thing to remember is to blend the foundations really well because the blending process is what makes the sculpting method work and look natural.

Step 1:

Apply the first foundation (your true shade) all over your face, blending it well. Start visualizing an oval face. The width of the oval is your eye sockets the height and length of your oval extends from the tip of your forehead to the tip of your chin.

Step 2:

Take the second foundation (your highlight shade) and apply it to the high points inside the oval. This includes your forehead, under the eyes, at the top of the cheekbones and the tip of your chin. So say your face is a little fuller, this will attract the attention to the narrow area to the middle of the face.

Step 3:

Lastly, apply your contour shade (the darkest one) to the areas outside the oval. This includes the the temples, along the hairline, the sides of your cheeks and down the jaw. By deepening these areas, your are making them visually recede and your face to appear more narrow and oval.

Step 4:

Now of course everyone will use different shades according to their skin tones so if you have ivory/beige skin, you’ll contour more than highlight – same goes for really pale skin. If you have bronze/ebony skin you will highlight more than you contour.

Step 5:

Finish up the process by applying powder to your face after you’ve blended all three foundations. For even more dramatic effect, use a different powder to match your three foundations. So use a regular one for your regular foundation, a lighter one where you highlighted and a darker one where you contoured. If you have just one shade of powder, then just use that all over the face. This will help ensure a smooth finish.

Step 6:

Find the perfect blush and then apply it to the apples of your cheeks for a youthful glow. And there you have it; a skinnier, younger looking face just take a few minutes!

Curvy models: is this the shape of things to come?

Not since Sophie Dahl had her moment advertising Opium perfume in 2000 has the fuller figure been so admired by the fashion world.

Just as many of us are thinking about losing the average 5lbs pounds we gained over Christmas, American high-fashion bible V magazine has devoted its latest issue to curvier women.

The images, shown here, appear in the February issue of the high-concept glossy which last year featured pop sensation Lady Gaga topless.

The women in the latest shoot were captured by Norwegian photographer Sølve Sundsbø who regularly shoots advertising campaigns for Givenchy, Gucci and Hermes.

After the size-zero debate dominated the fashion industry for years, could curvy be the shape of things to come?

The plus-size model of the moment is, arguably, Crystal Renn. Last year, she wrote a memoir Hungry: A Young Model's Story of Appetite, Ambition and the Ultimate Embrace of Curves which detailed her battle with an eating disorder as a skinny model. Since she gave up forcing her body conform to an unnaturally tiny size, her career has bloomed. The pinnacle was being photographed by model-maker Steven Meisel and appearing in a Dolce and Gabbana ad campaign.

Her agent, Gary Dakin, heads up Ford +, the plus-size division of New York agency Ford Models, Dakin championed Renn’s plus-size career from the start and now guides many other successful plus-size models who are increasingly finding their body-shape in demand.

“I am thrilled when I see these pictures,” says Dakin. “Firstly, it shows that these girls can work with great photographers and amazing magazines like V and be taken more seriously for the work they do. For my girls, it means that the word ‘plus’ can – hopefully – go away soon since they are now working in every major magazine in the world.

“It reinforces my belief that beauty comes in an assortment of sizes, shapes and colours.”

Could this be just a one-off publicity stunt – such as when the newly-launched British fashion magazine Love put a naked Beth Ditto on its first cover? “There is no way this is a brief dalliance,” says Dakin. “Glamour, French Vogue and a host of other publications have ensured that this segment of the industry is here to stay and a force to be reckoned with.”

Not all fashion insiders are as positive, however. One London-based fashion stylist, who asked not to be named, said: “It’s such an extreme response to the size-zero hoopla.

“I think all women want to see images of healthy girls, not women who are emaciated. But, realistically I don't think many women aspire to be a size 18, either. I don't think using outsize models is really the way to change perceptions - it's just an extreme volt-face.

“I am sure [British knitwear designer] Mark Fast only had good intentions when he put larger girls in his skimpy, spidery knits [last year]. But, really, all I thought when I saw the girls in the clothes is that it looked ridiculous.”

If you have dandruff, do not worry about being alone with your problem. With one out of every two people in the entire world having, or having had, that same problem as yours, you are definitely not alone with it. Dandruff is a common hair problem. Embarrassing indeed, but a very, very common problem nonetheless.

What causes dandruff? Well, you see, our entire skin, from our scalps to the soles of our feet, sheds dead skin cells on a daily basis. We get a complete coating of new skin every 28 days or so, but we hardly even notice it.

Our bodies also play host to a lot of microorganisms like bacteria and fungi, feeding off on the sebaceous oils that our skin produces. Our scalp in particular is home to a kind of fungus called malassezia fungus, and its food is the oils produced by the hair follicles of our scalp. Dandruff happens when, for some reason or another, the malassezia fungus goes crazy and irritates our scalp, causing the dead skin to shed a lot faster. So, instead of shedding the dead skin cells of our scalp for a month, the shedding happens in less than two weeks, and the oil that our hair follicles produce cause these dead skin cells to clump together and become dandruff. Until now, the factors that trigger this phenomenon with the malassezia fungus are still the subject of research.

Dandruff is an embarrassing hair condition, and it can recur despite your best efforts. But with proper hair care, the recurrence of dandruff can be controlled. The best way to keep the flakes at bay is to shampoo your hair every day - picture perfect hair.

Dandruff can, of course, become stubborn, so if washing everyday with your regular shampoo does not stop the flakes from becoming haywire, the next best thing to do would be to start using anti-dandruff shampoos. Look for anti-dandruff shampoos with zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide, salicylic acid or ketoconazole as the active ingredient. To keep your scalp from developing immunity to these shampoos, go ahead and rotate brands at least once a month.

For optimum results, you can lather your hair with the shampoo of your choice twice. The first wash will clear the scalp of the flakes and the oil buildup. The second one would let the chemicals in the shampoo get absorbed by the scalp - haute hair.

You can also try homemade remedies to wash the flakes away and to keep the dandruff from recurring. What is considered the best homemade remedy to dandruff is a vinegar wash. Mix two teaspoons of vinegar with six teaspoons of water and rub it against your scalp before you go to bed, then wrap your head with a towel. Apply the same solution to your hair once again in the morning when you wake up, then rinse it with water. You do not have to worry about the smell of vinegar in your hair, as the smell of vinegar does evaporate eventually.

Air drying. Air drying is usually done by people who have short and low-maintenance hairstyles, or by people with curly hair. If you blow dry your hair, make sure that it is not soaking. Blot the water out with a towel first. Do not hold the dryer too close to your head; keep it at least six inches away from your hair and move the dryer constantly around your head. Protect the outer strands of your hair from being over-dried by bending over and blow drying your hair with your hair hanging upside down. Also, try not to dry your hair completely with the blow dryer. Stop while the hair is still slightly damp.

Whether you air dry your hair or you blow dry it is completely your own choice based on your own lifestyle and preferences. But whatever you do, always remember that the hair is fragile. Be careful while handling it.

Right Way To Wash Your Hair

Most of us think we have this all down pat, but for all we know, we might be wrong. After all, we have been washing our hair all our lives. How could we go wrong with something like washing our hair? Also, do not mix your hair all over your head as you shampoo because it will get all tangled up. After this, rinse the shampoo off.

More often than not, we need to shampoo our hair for a second time. The purpose of the first shampoo is to clean the oil and dirt off; the second shampoo is supposed to let the shampoo treat our hair. So, repeat the process, but let the shampoo sit on for around a couple of minutes. Rinse the hair completely after this.

To get the excess water off your hair, just squeeze the water out. Do not pull or tug at the hair because the hair is at its most delicate when it is soaked. When the excess water is out, apply a dollop of conditioner - mane event - and apply it along the hairline, the nape and the ends of the hair. Pile your hair then inside a shower cap and let the conditioner stay there for around ten minutes. And then, rinse it off completely.

The process described here does seem tedious and time-consuming. But remember, having great hair takes time and effort. And it is definitely worth it for a picture perfect hair.
