The national unemployment rate continues to stagnate at a crushing 9.1%, but there was GOOD news recently when 100 unemployed women in Philadelphia received complete makeovers as winners of Style Me Hired, a community relations program created by small business owner Marc Voci.

"Makeovers are magic," Voci said. "Helping bring that magic of change to women who truly need help getting back into the workforce is our mission."

Thai Committee Agrees to Nationwide Increase in Minimum Wage

According to a Bloomberg news report this week, "Thai workers and employers agreed to a government proposal to boost the minimum wage, meeting a campaign pledge by Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra as floods disrupt operations at more than 1,000 factories. Wages in Bangkok and six other provinces will rise to 300 baht a day by April 1, Somkiat Chayasriwong, the labor ministry’s permanent secretary, told reporters in Bangkok today. In the rest of the country, wages will rise an average of 40 percent by April 1 and then to 300 baht per day by 2013, with rates frozen at that level until 2015, he said."

Clothing Wage Cut South Africa Could Fit Other Industries

According to a TimesLive.co.za article, "The lowering of the minimum wage in the clothing and textile industry can serve as a model to other industries, the SA Chamber of Commerce and Industry said on Monday.

“The agreement to lower the minimum wage by 30 percent within the clothing and textile industry is a model that can be implemented to increase South Africa’s competitiveness and employment creation,” Sacci president Chose Choeu said in a statement.

Last week, textile industry employers and the Apparel Manufacturers of SA, under the umbrella of the SA Clothing and Textile Workers’ Union, signed a deal to offer 30 percent lower wages to new employees.

Choeu invited other industries to “seriously consider the brave example of the clothing and textile industry when tackling the significant problem of unemployment in South Africa”. He said the agreement had not only saved jobs, but already led to the creation of new jobs."

Macy's to Hire 78,000 Seasonal Associates in 2011

Macy's, Inc. (NYSE:M) today said it plans to hire approximately 78,000 seasonal associates for its Macy's and Bloomingdale's stores, call centers, distribution centers and online fulfillment centers nationwide for the 2011 holiday season. The hiring plan represents an increase of about 4 percent from the approximately 75,000 seasonal associates hired for last year's holiday season.

"We always hire aggressively during the holidays to ensure our customers are well-served in this important shopping period. We expect additional hiring this year given the continued sales growth in our business - both in-store and online," said Terry J. Lundgren, Macy's, Inc. chairman, president and chief executive officer. "Our seasonal associates serve customers on the selling floor, work behind the scenes in store operations positions, interact with customers via the telephone in call centers, and staff the distribution and fulfillment centers that coordinate shipments to our stores and directly to customers who buy online."
Most of the positions are part-time, often with some flexibility to fit with the availability of the individuals hired. Many positions require the applicant to work evenings, weekends or overnight. In some cases, temporary seasonal associates are offered open year-round positions based on their skills and performance over the holiday season.

The company has already begun hiring for sales support positions, such as in distribution centers and store receiving. Applications for other seasonal positions at Macy's and Bloomingdale's will be accepted beginning next week at www.macysJOBS.com and www.bloomingdalesJOBS.com. Candidates who submit applications online will receive a response via e-mail. Hiring for store sales positions will begin in mid-October.

"Working in a seasonal position at Macy's or Bloomingdale's is a great way to earn extra money during the holidays. Many of our seasonal hires are students on break, stay-at-home parents, individuals in career transitions or those with extra time they would like to use productively," Lundgren said. "Retailing is a fast-paced business, and working at Macy's and Bloomingdale's during this magical time of the year can be fun and rewarding."

The government's monthly labor report was dissapointing as November's job growth came in far lower than expected and the unemployment rate rose to 9.8%.

U.S. employers added 39,000 jobs to their payrolls in November, the Labor Department reported. That marks a major slowdown from October, when the economy added an upwardly revised 172,000 jobs.

It is challenging to find a job in any industry at the moment. Hopefully the jobs outlook will improve.

Don't panic and if you are unemployed, keep looking for fashion jobs.

Jobs in Fashion Are Not Limited To Fashion Companies

When searching for a career in fashion, we typically think about finding a job at a company selling clothing or fashion accessoeis. However, when looking for jobs in fashion, we do not truly have to only look toward Jones Apparel, Burberry, Neiman Marcus, Armani, Levi Strauss, etc. We should also keep in mind that their are fashion technology jobs, fashion warehousing jobs, clothing manufacturing jobs, etc. For example, in the fashion technology sector their are plenty of career paths. Yes, much require you being tech savy. But they may also require a sense of style. For example, you can design fashion websites, work with CAD design software, build e-commerce applications for clothing retailers, etc.

OK, working in a warehouse may not be your dream career. However, having a job is certainly something to be proud of. Clothing companies typically have warehouses. You can find a warehouse job at a clothing company or possibly work at your apparel company (from a regular office) and manage the warehouse functions (inventory management etc.). You do not neccessarily have to work in the physical warehouse to have a job in warehousing.

Better Fashion Jobs

I wish I had a better fashion job... Don't we all wish we had better fashion jobs? Well, maybe you are thinking that you have a great job in the fashion industry. Possibly, you would not want to change a thing. In my opinion, if you do not actually own the company, you can always have a "better" job. Sure, I understand that you can be happy in your current position. I also understand that the grass can be greener on the other side of the fence. The bottom line is that you may actually have the perfect job. But is their a "more" perfect job??? Possibly, there is a job with the same requirements, with the same quality of fellow employees, but possibly a slightly higher salary... Would that be better?

Anyway, if you are happy with your current position, by all means stay there. However, if you think you can do better... Don't hesitate to look around.

DON'T EVER SETTLE. STRIVE FOR BETTER. EVEN IF YOU ARE COMFORTABLE, MAYBE YOU CAN FIND BETTER.

However, do not screw up a good thing... If you truly do have a great job in fashion, do not lose it... The goal here is to improve your fashion career, not mess it up.
