I have been getting into Zumba more and more and I know several of my friends also love these dance workouts, so I thought how cool it would be to get a Zumba scarf for all of us when we go to our classes.

If you are like me, you can’t afford to buy a whole new wardrobe each summer. So, what I do when the weather starts changing is I shop my own closet.

 Now, that may sound kind of silly to some people, but it actually can be a lot of fun and can save you a lot of money on your wardrobe. I don’t know how many times I have found a piece of clothing that I forgot I had or realized that I had way too many black tanks and didn’t need any more of them.

Here are some tips for shopping your own closet to save your some money and get you organized for summer.

Organize and Purge

The first thing that you should do is pull everything out of your closet and drawers. Make sure you have enough time to concentrate on this as it can be quite a task especially if you have a lot of clothes.

Organize it all by the type of clothing it is, for example pile all the skirts together, all the tank tops together, and all your shorts together, and so on.

While you are sorting, be sure to purge any clothing that you don’t want anymore. You can donate the clothes that are still in good condition and toss the clothes that have seen their day.

When it comes to getting rid of clothes, if the piece doesn’t fit you right… toss it, if you haven’t worn the piece of clothing in over 2 years… toss it, if you simply don’t like it anymore and can’t imagine wearing it now…toss it. It does you no good to hang on to clothes that you will never wear as they will just clutter up your closet.

Now that you have your clothes in piles this should give you a good idea of what you have and what pieces you definitely do or don’t need to add to your wardrobe.

Find New Outfits

Now that you have all your clothes out where you can see them you can put away some piles of your clothes such as your heavy sweaters. Place these in the back of your closet. You may want to keep out some lighter weight sweaters and cardigans as you may need them for cooler weather in the spring and summer.

Look at the piles of clothes that you have and try to find new outfits to put together. Try pairing items that you haven’t ever paired together to see how many new outfits you can get from shopping your own closet.

You can also take out your accessories like belts and scarves to see how you can make your outfits new and exciting as well.

You may just be surprised at how you can take a “winter” skirt and pair it with a light summer top and find a new awesome outfit to wear in the summer. Try to find items that you may think are just for colder months and pair them with summer items to extend your wardrobe.

Scissors and a Sewing Machine Are Your Best Friends

If you have a pair of jeans that have a hole in them or are maybe too short on you now, go ahead and transform them into crops or cut off shorts.

If you know how to sew you can easily transform some of your clothes that you don’t wear into something you can make your own. For example you can cut off the sleeves of a long sleeve shirt and sew it into a tank top. You can take a long maxi skirt and hem it into a hemline that is more flattering on you.

When you know how to sew you have so many options available to you for transforming your wardrobe.

Putting It All Back

Most people have a certain way that they like to organize their closets. My favorite way to organize my closet is to hang all the like pieces together (skirts with skirts, dresses with dresses and so on). I also color coordinate the pieces so all my black sleeveless shirts are hung next to each other. This helps me see what exactly I have to wear and piece outfits together easily.

I know some other people like to organize their closet by outfits and hang them together. For example if you know you are going to wear a certain blouse with a certain pair of pants hang those items together so you can easily just pick and choose an outfit.

The way you put your clothes back into your closet is up to you and what works best for you. Just be sure that you put the clothes back so that you can see all the items you will need for your summer wardrobe and don’t miss out on wearing something because you hid it in the back.

This is a great way to organize your wardrobe for a new season as well as find out what exactly you need to add to your wardrobe. You may find that after this shopping session you don’t need as many clothes for summer as you thought you did or it may be the opposite and you have lots of shopping to do!

I have seen polka dot jeans popping up all over the place for the past few months, so I decided to jump into this fashion trend and went looking for the perfect pair of pants.

If you have done any shopping lately you have probably noticed there all kinds of different polka dot pants that are for sale. I was looking for a great pair to wear for spring and into summer and even ones that I could break back out in the fall time. I also didn’t want to pay a lot of money for them because with most fashion trends it may not be a piece I will wear next year.

I actually found a perfect pair of polka dot jeans at Forever 21. I love these green and black polka dot skinny jeans and they cost me less than $23.

Are they the best quality jeans? No, but they work great for this fashion trend and fit pretty well too.

They only cost $12 and best of all they have pretty good reviews. They may not last forever but you really can’t go wrong with $12 and it’s a great way to try this trend out.

This trend may not be for every woman but I do think it is one that a teen can pull off as well as a woman in her 40′s. It all depends on the type of pants you buy and what you pair the pants with. If you don’t like flashier clothing pieces opt for a smaller polka dot print in a normal blue jean color, but on the other hand if you like bolder clothing pieces, go ahead and get the colored jeans and have fun with them!

I have been wanting to buy a pair of TOMS shoes for awhile now, but the price of the shoes always held me back. So, I decided to do some shopping for shoes that look like TOMS and I found plenty of options available.

The shoes that I found cost a lot less than TOMS but have basically the same style of the canvas espadrille shoe. These shoes are a great alternative for women who want to follow this fashion trend but may not have $50-$60 to spend on a pair of casual shoes.

Skechers Bobs Shoes

A lot of people claim that Skechers stole the look of TOMS, but actually TOMS are simply espadrille shoes that have been around for many years. The Bobs by Skechers are also very popular and stylish and come in cheaper than what TOMS cost.

These were the shoes that I ended up buying from Kohls. They were on sale for $42.99 and then I had a 30% coupon from using my Kohls charge, which means I only ended paying $33 including tax for these shoes.

I like these Skeckers BOBS because of the feminine feel of the doily pattern but they can still be worn as a cute casual shoe. The also come in turquoise, hot pink and black.

Shoes That Look Like TOMS But Are Much Cheaper

If Skechers are still too expensive for you, there are more shoes that look like TOMS and are a lot less expensive. In fact, some of the shoes below you can buy for under $20. Just keep in mind you get what you pay for and some of them may not last as long as more expensive shoes.

This just goes to show that you don’t have to pay a lot of money to keep up with the trends and stay fashionable.

One trend that I keep coming across on other fashion blogs as well as at some of my favorite clothing websites are bird print dresses, blouses and other clothing including scarves.

Now, some women may be completely turned off this trend because they think the print is too “young” or “little girlish” but this is actually a beautiful trend when you pick the right pieces. Most of the dresses and blouses have that vintage feel to them and can look appropriate for a Sunday at church or professional enough to wear to the office.

Being that I have 3 young kids at home I do a lot of my shopping online including shopping for clothes. Years ago, I used to be hesitant about buying clothes online because I just didn’t want to deal with items not looking right or not fitting well.

But nowadays as a busy mom I don’t have the time to shop at 5 or 6 different stores or boutiques for my clothes. Plus I can find just about any type of dress, skirt, top or shoes online because I have so many stores and small online boutiques to choose from.

Having been shopping for clothes online for a few years now, I have a basic “checklist” that I go through before I buy anything. I not only use these tips for shopping for clothes for me but also for my kids and husband.

My Tips for Shopping for Clothes Online

Here are my basic tips and things I do before I every buy a piece of clothing or any type of accessory from an online store.

1. Make sure that the website is a trusted and reputable site. For example, I most likely wouldn’t buy clothing from a site called “World’s Cheapest Clothes for Women” because it just doesn’t sound professional and may be a scam or a site that may just take your money. I stick to websites that I know are reputable and have good reviews and user experiences.

*I have included a list at the end of this article of some of my favorite places to shop online.

2. Check out the size chart and measurements for each item that I may be ordering.  This may not guarantee a perfect fit but it will definitely help you especially if you are in between sizes or vary in sizes between brands. Be sure that you are taking accurate measurements of your own body when comparing them to the size chart.

If you are in between sizes and one of your measurements puts you in a bigger size, always go with the bigger size. Most of the time you can get clothing taken in by a tailor but it much harder to have clothing let out because it is too small.

3. Almost every online retailer allows customers to write reviews of the clothing items. Make sure you read these reviews if there are any listed. This can be a great way to find out the clothing item runs large or small or if it is cheaply made and not worth the money. Although you have to take some of the reviews with a grain of salt most of the time you can get a pretty good idea of the clothing item from the reviews.

4. Always check the return policy of the website before you had over your credit card information. Some sites may have a limited return policy while others may not have any restrictions on returns. Some places will only allow 30 day returns or may only give you merchandise credit no matter how you pay for the items. There have been some stores in the past that I have refused to shop from because of their return policy.

5. Do some comparison shopping if you know the item is pretty popular and you may be able to find it at another place online for cheaper. For example if you are shopping for a black high lo skirt you can probably find one at several different places online. You don’t have to go with the cheapest item but you should definitely consider the price of the item and don’t forget to figure in shipping and handling charges as well.

6. Look for coupon codes to save some money on your clothing purchases. Before I ever checkout, I always search for a coupon code for the store to see if I can save any more money. I would say that 70% of the time I am able to find valid coupon codes to major retailers such as Old Navy, Gap, and Kohl’s.

7. When checking out make sure the site is secure. This isn’t really a big problem anymore as almost every website has secure checkouts nowadays but it is still a good idea to check on the security during the checkout process.

8. As soon as you receive your clothing, try it on to see how it fits (for me this is not a problem and I usually try it on the minute I get the box inside).  This is especially true if you have ordered clothing from a site that has a time restriction on the returns. If I find that I don’t like a certain piece of clothing, I usually wait a few more days and try it on again just to make sure that my first opinion of the article of clothing stands before I waste time trying to return it.
