All you see is blue!

March 1st is that special day that celebrates me.

The calm that blue offers has been very appealing to me lately. Classic blue has also been named by the color god Pantone as the color of the year and is making a huge impact on the style scene. So as my birthday falls on a Sunday, what better hue to don to church service than you guessed it....blue! Complete with matching blue balloons that I had no idea would be that tricky to manage. I must confess I kinda gave up on managing them after a while, Ha!

All in all, I felt really beautiful in this simple getup.

Among life's most exhilarating experiences, spending quality time with family must surely be one of the most satisfying. I had a fantastic time at my birthday dinner hosted by my family in San Francisco last night. So much laughter, so much joy!

My heart is filled with gratitude to The Most High for who He is as God and for those He placed in my life!

It's a jungle out there...the runways have spoken!

I may not be an animal print enthusiast be it leopard, tiger, cow patches or cheetah for that matter, but I have to admit that this body suit / biker shorts set was a great choice to have me 'walking on the wild side'.

The only thing missing was red lipstick for an additional punch!

With fashion's new neutral aka animal print, sometimes more is more which is why I chose a print pair of heels for a monochromatic 'queen of the jungle' (Ha!) look complete with a print topper. The crimson bag and belt added a nice pop of color to an already bold look.

Cargo Pants... A Modern Take on the Pocketed Trend

Cargo pants have temporarily replaced good old jeans, in my closet at least.

You?

The volume, the intentionally placed oversized pockets (a gal’s best friend, Ha!) and the overall slouchy fit make for an untethered and effortless look that’s often a go to for me and for many gals that view sacrificing comfort as a non negotiable.

I balanced out the volume with a fitted mock neck top and added chunky heel boots to amplify the pant’s street style appeal. Statement sneakers would’ve added a cool vibe and a cropped top would have worked just as well especially in the warmer months. Styling these pants monochromatically with a matching knitted sweater would be pleasing to the eyes as well.

Even though I loved the fabric of the pants because it’s breathable cotton, a silky pair styled with sleek stiletto ankle boots would most definitely elevate the pants into date night territory.

I cinched my waist with a Gucci belt that picked up on the bag and voila! A very cool off duty style! In a very unusual color combo dare I add.

Cargo/utility pants got their start way back in the military but had a strong fashion come in the late 1990s and 2000s. Comfort seekers and street style enthusiasts use these as a break from the sartorial athleisure trend. They are cozy, versatile and can go with pretty much any basics that already live in your closet.

Cozying Up in a Sweater Dress and a Pom Pom Beanie

If you are like me, then sweater dresses are a go to during the Winter months. From their coziness to their comfort, the ease of wear and most importantly the one and doneness of them, seriously what’s not to love! Be it fuzzy, cashmere, cable knit, turtle neck, ankle / floor grazing or mini, one thing that makes sweater dresses a favorite of the style set crowd is that there are a plethora of ways to style them for a sure fire effortless look. You can dress them all the way up or you can casual them out depending on where you’re headed.

Trust me I know how cliché that sounds but seriously, you can!

I styled this playful fuzzy white sweater dress by itself with a box bag and thigh high not so luxe boots cos I knew I'd be stepping on sinking, wet, grassy dirt (Ha!). You probably already know that combat boots are my thing (and gosh I couldn't get enough of them even if I tried really hard) and those would have worked perfectly well with this beauty for a whole new level of ... you guessed it, cool!

It can also be styled over pants for an elevated off duty look or with sneakers for a laidback weekend look. I wouldn’t recommend this particular sweater dress for the office for obvious reasons… it’s thigh grazing length!

Just like in Cali… when the weather is a little sunny and a little crisp, yet warm enough to skip a coat, then it’s time to show those sweater dresses you’ve been adding to your arsenal some ‘holiday’ love.

The Resurgence of the Poncho

I can't even believe it's May and the first half of this year is almost over!

Where has time gone?

It's been a minute since I wore a poncho so I kind of forgot how cozy and comfy it is to wear a "blanket" out on a cool Spring morning. Ponchos have been having a moment and are known to make even the preppiest outfits look trendy. The resurgence of the poncho, has been very well received by the street style set.

I love the fact that they are a perfect camouflage for areas we don't want to highlight. Oh and they can be worn during any season depending on the fabric.

Score!

I fell in love with this piece the second I saw it and knew right away I had to have it. It was sold out all over the US so you can imagine my excitement when I eventually found one and scooped it up real quick.

Being an ideal transitional piece, I wore this poncho to service the other day as an alternative to a jacket and it totally updated my classic white shirt on leggings look. I wore a belt over to accentuate my waist.

I kept my boots unzipped for an effortless vibe.

How to Dress Up an Ankara Skater Dress

Spring sprung in case you've just crawled out of hibernation, Ha! The Bay Area weather has 'not so shockingly' been a roller coaster, 70s one day and dipping to 50s the very next even with bright sunny skies. Deception at it's best! With lots of rain too and gosh how I relish every drop that lands noisily atop the awning right outside my bedroom window. Music to my ears. Sheer delight. My bed beckons. Zzzz.... until the 5am alarm rudely interrupts the bliss. Then it's work, home and the cycle repeats.

It's my favorite time of year!

It's also that time of year when the 'do I wear a jacket today or not' dilemma peaks. It's also the time of year marked by cherry blossoms appearing are all over, everything you can think of blooming, birds chirping, layers gradually being peeled off. And 'skin' is in once again meaning the legs must be shaved, annoying allergy symptoms are here and so is Easter.

I'm not sure how the date is decided but Easter's late this year to every teacher's and students of course (PUSD) chagrin having to work a long stretch through March and well into April before Spring Break. It's finally here and I plan on enjoying my well deserved time off albeit being very short.

Enough of the gushing about me, what have you been up to? And what are you doing on Easter Sunday?

I Chose Black

If you know me well, you’d know that my birthday means the world to me and even with life being as fast paced as erm, my teaching, (Ha!) I still take time to celebrate me.

It could be throwing a party with many invited guests or with a few but it’s first and foremost a celebration of myself where I take time to recognize and acknowledge me.
It’s an act of self love, a tradition.
And why the heck not!

So when March 1st rolls around each year, you can be sure that I’d commit to who I am and to loving on myself. Look back on my last birthdays here, here and here and here.

With Pantone’s color of the year being coral, eye popping 70’s colors like oranges, lime greens, hot pinks, and teals are expected to continue trending this year. Last year I wore pink on my birthday but this year ‘I CHOSE BLACK’. A backless long gown with a killer slit and cut outs. The drama is kicked into higher gear with the flowing skirt that gives a formal ball vibe.

Black, a classy yet sophisticated neutral shade that everyone can pull off is an easy/go to way to look fashion forward for any occasion. This particular attention grabbing gown complete with a bolero is an epitome of fun regardless of it’s subdued color.

I paired this with a pair of black heels that scarcely showed and a gold clutch for an unbeatable combination. A French manicure was all I needed to look extra polished, ;).

Color Block with a Modern Twist

Color blocking simply means wearing two or more solid hues resulting in a catchy yet chic look. Simply put, it's adding blocks of solid colors to a look and has been around for a while. This trend is still holding strong and is not going anywhere anytime soon.

While neutral and subtle colors still look great together, a trend setting modern twist of pairing shades that are opposite on the color wheel make for an eye catching and edgier vibe that's not for the faint hearted. Opposite color pairs like orange and blue are known as complimentary colors meaning they produce greater contrast than either would with any other color. With the right accessories in the mix, this combo can effortlessly take your look from daytime to date night. Remember this look here?

A color blocked look still has the propensity (gosh, I'm becoming my Pastor, she uses this word pretty often. Love you Pastor Joy!) to make one stand out in the street style game.

The best thing about this not so new trend is that there are no set rules. Just experiment and have fun with it. I guess that could pass for the rule? Ha!

Comfy Style in a Veiled Beanie and Distressed Denim

I am a total hat gal but no style is quite like the brimless beanie to me. Not because it looks best on me but because it’s an ultimate Winter staple for me and I’m assuming for you as well?

Why the heck not, it’s functional by keeping your head warm while hiding messy hair (Ha!) and fashionable by adding a cool yet effortless vibe to a look. A beanie can also give that undeniable edge to a look that a fascinator, a sunhat or any kind of hat for that matter won’t and can’t ever achieve.

From one Winter to the next, beanies continue to enjoy the spotlight and recently upgraded to Veiled, no surprises. The best thing about veiled beanies is that you can take your good ole beanie and jazz it up yourself with a piece of lace of your own choosing. What’s better than being able to choose a color or style of lace that you like to create the perfect illusion of 'mysterious and powerful'. Great DIY!

The Holiday Ball Gown

I read somewhere that "lusting over a beautiful ball gown is one of life's purest pleasures".

Stylish is always on trend but 'tis the season to ramp it up, be it to the cheesy work holiday party at a colleague's home or a black tie event in a grand ballroom.

From crimson reds to emerald greens, velvets, metallics and show stopping laces in breathtaking styles that are a surefire way to have you stand out from the crowd, style is ushering in the holidays in very exciting ways.

The holiday parties are in full swing, you've rsvp'd to attend quite a few and figured out your party hopping strategies including who's driving and who'd get liquored up, the million dollar question is what are you wearing?

Being a full time teacher with the final work week of 2018 behind me as recently as yesterday means that in between teaching and gift shopping, I haven't had time to shop for any party outfits. Luckily there are promo items sitting in packages that scream 'open me' each time you absent-mindedly stroll by them, one of the perks of blogging.

Today I'm showing one of them, an over the top Oscar / swoon worthy gown by Vindictive that will have any gal looking like an A-list star without blowing the budget. This gown boasts a skirt made out of luxurious layer after layer of beautiful emerald green lace that adds volume and a bodice spiced up in decadent three dimensional gemstones, sequins and huge doses of va-va-voom.

A pop of color in a pink clutch, my favorite pair of shoes and a red ring made for a striking finish.

I am not one to wear ball gowns often but when I do, I like to pull out all the stops so you can imagine that this one with all it's bells and whistles totally made my heart flutter. The fit is great for my form and the style my personality and taste.

Elegance, pure unadulterated elegance...

...that's how I describe this look.

Red To Toe...Well, Almost

H2T red is not only a bold statement, but has been completely on trend and incredibly stylish. Red takes no prisoners and in the past two years, we've seen a wild jump in fashionistas rocking this trend.

So if there was ever a time when it's ok to rock your red pants with a red top, red shoes, and a red bag it is now. You can also choose to mix things up with a bit lighter or darker shades in the mix. Remember these looks here and here?

What's not to love!

Much like the warm and cold undertones of lipsticks discussed here, there's a red for everyone whether you lean towards the darker burgundy or a attention grabbing crimson. Find the one that works well for your undertones and go paint the town red in it.

There's no better way to rock this trend in the cold season than with a red jacket that instantly becomes a statement piece. I've never been one to shy away from a bold color palette so I went for a red bag and red lips and red sunnies. I also opted for a ring in the fiery hue and black boots for an understated yet chic finish.

Um, I get extra points for daring to try on the red boots, ha!

Trench Coat, a Perfect Transitional Piece

With the cold season comes the resurgence of coats, jackets and trenches. Trench coats are a perfect transitional piece, great for layering and a definite Fall essential. It's versatile and adds layers of chic to a look.

The timeless khaki trench has become a classic and almost every girl can boast of having at least one of those in her closet and if you're one of the trench obsessed, it's safe to say you must own different versions of what is essentially the same item. We ain't mad at you!

The trench has become more popular with each passing year and the plethora of designs out there coupled with wears by celebrities have made them the 'cool' pieces to be seen in. What's not to love about them anyhow?

Today I'm showing an exciting trench coat that leans into an autumnal color scheme with its rich orange color. I've actually owned this piece for many years. I diy'ed the extended wide sleeves just to add interest and update the piece. Red and orange is a combo I've come to like very much so I added a wide red obi belt to the mix just as a styling option. I finished the look with block heels, a red bag and a pair of white sunnies.

Wearing Yellow...It's a Matter of Hue

Yellow is the color of sunshine and happiness. It has the ability to cheer one up and get you noticed from miles away, Ha! It can also appear uber luxurious when paired with the right colors.

One of the basic colors in the color wheel, we have seen yellow everywhere this year. High end brands cemented this trend on the runways and bloggers haven't stopped donning shades of yellow ever so fabulously might I add. I used to be a yellow naysayer, but I recently found that daring yellow tones glow up my skin and look flattering on me. So when it comes to wearing yellow, regardless of whether you're draped in head to to toe lemonade or have 'less is more' as your mantra, it's a matter of hue. Find the perfect one and the color yellow, bright and mellow will be a winner for you as well.

If you're like me then you also can't get enough of bell sleeves. They made a strong come back last year. While it makes hand washing a challenge depending on the length of it, bell sleeves are fun and instantly add interest and an oomph to a look. So this crop yellow bell sleeve sweater was a sartorial win for me.

I paired the knit sweater with paper bag pants, another trend from last year that caught on really fast with the style set. Residing in the golden state of California, we enjoy the privilege of wearing straw hats well into the cooler months so I went for one of those instead of a felt hat to finish my simple look and accessorized with boots and a backpack.

How was your Thanksgiving and have you started your holiday shopping just yet? Did you join the craziness called 'Black Friday' shopping? It would be and No and No for me, but I did enjoy a great Thanksgiving with my children.

Paint Brush Print Pant Suit

Soft paint brush print in the Fall?

Count me in! There's absolutely nothing wrong with shaking things up a bit and flawlessly rocking these soft feminine colors year round.

Fashion is so cyclical! The paint brush and paint splattered print from way back is back! Dang I should have held on to all of mine. Not to worry, you can always breath life into a dying piece by DIY~ing the trend and keeping that piece around for a couple more seasons.

Soft hues are typically associated with Spring while jewel tones stay linked to Fall. If you're like most people, then you typically move your light pink clothing to the back of the closet and reach for the deeper hues as Fall rolls around. But if there's one thing I've learned about fashion and styling over the years, it's that you can wear any shade at any time of the year and be very unapologetic about it. A pastel sweater dress paired with those boots you've been dying to show off is a great way to stay fresh while keeping warm at the same time.

It's also a 'go to' look for the street style savvy.

A predominantly soft and alluring print piece like this is not only refreshing but can also be worn well into the Fall because the fabric isn't totally flimsy. While I plan to style the blazer and pants as separates in the future, today I'm showing how I styled the drool worthy pant suit with a baby pink bag but also showed it with a rich red belt bag.

The paintbrush print is cropping up in deeper autumnal tones. How have you been painting the town rainbow by rocking this trend?

Wedding Guest

From the moment you RSVP to a wedding invite, your mind gets into a spin on how to arrive as a well dressed guest. Even though there's no official rule book for what to wear, you get into a debate with yourself regarding what look would be best.

A long dress, short, fitted, print, solid color, splurge worthy designer frocks, local mall finds or custom made. The accessories as well as whether to hat or not to hat are other things to take into consideration. Shopping for that perfect look should be fun, but if you overthink it, it can honestly become quite a bit of a nightmare.

The right style and color as well as choosing what makes you comfortable and confident would have you standing out. As the drama seeker (Ha!) that I am, I was drawn to this runway piece for the color and the style. Much as this dress is multi layered and heavy, the breathable fabric made it wearable in the balmy New York August weather.

As soon as I received it, I plucked on of the flowers and sent to a milliner in Houston whose pieces I've worn in the past and she made a matching fascinator for me. I finished the look with silver accessories.

Summer has officially come to an end. Did you attend any weddings and how did you decide on a look?

Hi guys! It’s been a hot minute huh? Y’all know my day job is teaching and when school gets back in session, its very challenging to juggle all the feathers I wear effectively. But I’ve missed everyone and I’m positive I was missed too. The break was great though, Ha!

I didn’t do a lot of traveling over the Summer unlike in Summers past but I did turn up the volume in cascading ruffles at my college reunion in San Diego. It's one of the outfits I wore to dinner at the weekend long reunion.

Neon Green in Street Style Fashion

The color green just like purple has a plethora of shades from hunter green, army green, forest, olive and lime green to neon green, emerald green and jade to name a few. Much as it’s not my go to color unlike the color purple, Pantone’s pick for the year 2018, it has a unique way of uplifting a street style ensemble or any ensemble for that matter.

The energy that surrounds neon green in particular can’t be overemphasized. Little wonder it’s been very visible on the runways and ultimately on the shelves of a lot of retailers.
Are you a fan?

Neon green has a richness and boldness to it that makes it perfectly seasonless. It also has a ‘pleasant surprise’ factor to it that will leave one wanting more. From a little piece of accessory or coordinate to a full blown neon green infatuation that will have heads turning as well as leave folks green with envy. Ha!

Head to toe green’d out is often times how I’ve seen this color styled. If you just cringed at the thought, I want you to know that you are not alone. Not by a long shot! You couldn’t pay me to leave my home clad in all green as recently as one month ago. Until I set eyes on this set from @judannclothings (introduced here, here, here) featuring a caftan with a high low hem as well as a summery array of flowers daintily sprinkled on the upper left corner and a matching crisp high waisted wide leg pants.

I knew right away that I wanted to wet my feet in the H2T neon green craze but I also wanted to show a perfect street style with one or both of the pieces for those who are newbies or still be on the fence. I looked to add a different color that would compliment yet tone down the green just a tad. Blue naturally came to mind since they’re both next to each other on the color spectrum.

The verdict?

This duo sang a perfect harmony!

I finished the look with a boater hat and an ark bag, another huge summer trend that could only house my wallet and phone for obvious reasons. Ha!

Polka Dot Sheer Top + Wide Leg Pants

Summer is finally here and what better way to welcome it than with a frilly sheer polka dot top and a pair of bright wide leg pants that will have you stand out in a crowd.

NOT ALL PANTS ARE CREATED EQUAL

A 70’s inspired style, wide leg pants are not only fun but fashion forward and gives the 'legs for days' effect especially when worn with a tucked in top that creates a head turning silhouette and creates balance. Even though this pair boasts a ton of volume, I didn’t feel that I was drowning in fabric.

While I wouldn’t wear this pair to work, wide leg pants in a light weight fabric (depending on the season) and paired with a crisp button down shirt makes for a very polished 9 to 5 look. Trade the shirt for a camisole or tank top and you’re after hours ready.

FRILLS + SHEER + POLKA DOTS = HEAVEN

Can you tell I’ve been obsessed with frills and sheer lately? I spoke about sheers here and how tricky they can be to pull off as not everyone is comfortable with baring it all. For this look, I wore a cropped tank top since my pants are high waisted and finished the look with an extra wide belt for more coverage.

The polka dot craze is here to stay and I’m starting to incorporate them more and more as I transition my wardrobe to rising temps (speaking of which today we’re at 100 freaking degrees!!!). This top paired perfectly with the wide leg pants, both kindly sent from Judann Clothings (introduced here) and are a perfect addition to your Summer closet. Tiered Pleated Skirt + Print Sheer Top

The love for sheer fabrics has been sweeping the fashion world. A scroll down timelines reveal a plethora of sheer frocks that leave nothing to the imagination. From the runways to high street, designers have changed the once forbidden VPL (visible panty line) to VP (visible panty).

While sheers have become the 'go to' fabric, pulling them off can be tricky sometimes. I'm honestly not a huge fan of baring it all but on the other hand, linings take away from the beauty of sheers. So to keep from giving the world a peep show in this lovely top kindly sent me from Fifinneji, I went for a full coverage bra/cami, one of the easiest ways to keep this fabric in one's radar without tossing decency out the window. Full coverage knickers would also be my personal preference if I had to wear sheer bottoms.

How about this for an eye catchy and insanely chic skirt to go with the gorgeous top? We've all known and loved tiered/ ruffled sleeves, now their sartorial flouncy successors are here and I am a huge fan. This one is very feminine and can take you from day time to night time. I finished the look with a belt, an alluring pair of ankle boots and a graphic clutch I felt was a good match for the look -DRAMA.
