Slutty Spring Sex

Don't know why you want to read about slutty sex... maybe it's your lack of or your guilt for over-indulging in such activities? But either way I have my own celibacy issues to deal with, and thank you for wanting to read along.

Today is cold and disgusting in the big apple. Imagine, I have less than a month left in New York and I still have to wear my winter jacket. Just when I thought society was getting more environmentally conscious, mother nature seems to disagree. For now, we can wear (almost) all black everything and pray that the dark pigments will carry out its function of attracting heat.

However, later in the future we can be self-sustainable robots and eliminate wastage of natural resources similar to this editorial titled, Awakening, featuring photography by Jacky Suharto for DEW magazine.

This week, last week, the week before has just been hellah stressful! Hellah? Did you really type that? Been working mad crazy on a secret project of mine. Mad crazy? Seriously Leanna...
I think the universe does not want to be a designer. Hence the reason I call myself a wanna-be designer. Literally, the turmoil and fiasco that always occurs during the process of constructing a garment is unbelievable. In addition, I had to ship goods overseas so there was bound to be trouble! Seized packages? Bird flu? Dying corbeaus? Feeling like a criminal...that was all part of the designing mix.

So now that I have some free time (which was much needed), I began tumbling again :) and realized that there was a yellow trend in my pictures.

Fashion Police: Neiman Marcus caught in the act of mislabeling!

A couple weeks ago, I stumbled across this NY Times article on retailers labeling real fur as faux fur. It showcases one of the many ethical issues within the fashion industry whether it is using interns as sweat shop workers or falsely advertising a product to consumers.

Finally getting some spare time, I did a quick summary of the article:

“That’s right: it was faux faux fur.”

Mislabeling real fur as fake fur is a relatively new issue in the game of retailing. While it is overtly unethical to mislabel products, the “real-for-fake switch” at first glance might not seem to make much business sense either. According to the article, due to the high demand for faux fur as a substitute for real fur, manufacturers and retailers who are struggling to meet consumer demands are mislabeling products as a result. This week, my product development professor was explaining to his students that when a manufacturer runs out of 'Large' size labels they do not shut the down the factory for the day and go home but instead use the 'Medium' size labels, which is why sometimes mediums fit too big. (The other times it could be that you actually lost weight?) Unfortunately, this was an extreme case with the faux fur (f&*k'd up I know). Amongst the retailers who were recently accused of such activity, by the Federal Trade Commission, was Neiman Marcus. DrJays.com and Eminent.

Though the three retailers violated a fur law, they were let off with a warning. This specific fur law was enacted in the 1950s and, at the time, was meant to prevent people from marketing furs like rabbit under its English name, Coney. The law has taken a new evolution by covering the misrepresentation of real fur for fake. “Under the F.T.C. settlement, which is preliminary and carries no financial penalties, the retailers will be subject to significant fines if they mislabel fur again in the next 20 years.” Therefore, if retailers make this mistake they would have to be summoned to pay a fine the next time.

The Humane Society of the United States, who urged the F.T.C. investigation, argues that this has been going on for several seasons. Unfortunately, Neiman Marcus has been a recurrent target. In 2007, after an Andrew Marc jacket that was labeled as 100% polyester was tested, it was identified as fur from raccoon dog. Moreover, in 2008, Human Society discovered again that the raccoon dog fur was misidentified as fake fur on several coats sold at various national retailers, Neiman Marcus being one of them. In 2010, Neiman Marcus had to pay $25,000 for violating consumer protection laws by a District of Columbia court.

I chose this article because it highlights one out of the many ethical issues faced within the fashion industry. With so many animal protection groups, PETA being the most noticed, it surprises me how retailers would relentlessly mislabel a product in order to restock stores. It makes me question whether they think groups, such as PETA, are insignificant? Or if they genuinely do not know what is entering their brick-and-mortar stores, which brings up further questions on their suppliers. Regardless, I would like to hear your opinions on the matter and whether or not, you believe Neiman Marcus should have received an immediate fine.

It is more like collage of the week. Sorry my dearest fashionistas and facios (male fashion gurus), I apologize for my week long absence, which might go on to be two weeks. I am dreadfully busy. FIT is starting to feel like a real school with the amount of research project assignments they are handing out. On top of that, the garment district has become my new liming spot for a secret project that I am working on, and when I get the free time 'dun kno' I must sling back a few drinks with the girls and take a little bubble.

For Spring break which was about two weeks ago, I had to runway from New York because the loneliness was killing me! I went to Delaware for a week to visit my bestie (aka the cute bunny under the tree). It was extremely relaxing and comforting with the TLC channel being our main source of entertainment.

Chelsea galleries, fly individuals.

This weekend, my friends came to NYC (yay!). On Saturday, while they went on a shopping extravaganza that lasted 12 hours (beyond ridiculous), I went to the Gagosian gallery to view the Jean-Michel Basquiat collection. Ofc, I was not allowed to take pictures so I snuck a few (don't hate, appreciate). After that exhibit, le friend and I walked in and out of galleries in Chelsea. I stumbled across these amazing 3D collages that used pins to hang various materials.
Sunday was a completely different ball park. A few of us went to Miss Lily's for the brunch prefix. The food was on point and the drinks made us swasted. The popular quote of the day: "Honestly, I am too drunk to go to church." Homegirl had to chew gum to mask her alcoholic breath (LOL). After our little soiree, we had a little photo shoot along W Houston.

Anyways I must work, work, work (working on my shii-t).

Unpublished article: "From the Avenue to Cyberspace"

I wrote this article, in early February, with hopes of it being published in an upcoming magazine for their March issue. Unfortunately, the magazine has yet to launch their first publication and this article is obviously too stale dated to be used. Therefore, I present to you my unpublished article:

From the Avenue to Cyber space

Leave it to the upcoming fashion elite to create new events, when fashion week of Trinidad and Tobago has failed us. Thanks to Anya Ayoung Chee, Carnival and fashion have officially formed a marriage, also known as “Fashion Rocks the Avenue.”

Many went out to support the event. Spectators saw the beautiful models, the variety of colours, the elegant flow of the fabrics and even the feter himself, Mr. Machel Montano! However, the audience was not only limited to the physical amount that attended the show. It was expanded to virtual onlookers through the Bmobile live streaming page. Caribbean diaspora, students studying abroad, and even international fans were all able to see the ‘Carnival of Colour’ collection as it graced the mobile runway. Also on stage were Liilah swimwear, sandals by Sandalias and accessories by both Cocoa Vintage and Melody Ehsani.

“917 number? Who is calling me from New York...Yes girl, I saw! Gabby’s body is too bes!” This was probably a common reaction globally when Gabrielle Walcott strutted fiercely in that gold, Liilah bikini and chiffon, Pilar throw-over. According to the Hollywood Reporter website, in 2011 when the first part of the finale for Project Runway season 9 aired in October, it racked up 2.99 million views amongst a demographic of U.S. adults between the ages of 18 and 49. Another statistic to consider is that in 2012, 84.9% of the U.S. Internet audience viewed online video. Hypothetically speaking, let’s say Anya gained fan love of at least half of the finale viewers. This means potentially 1.3 million people in the U.S. alone could have possibly entered diet and exercise mode (even with their lack of Carnival participation) after seeing Gabrielle’s hot bod.

This trend of live streaming fashion shows is nothing new. To promote their holiday line, Victoria Secretbegan live streaming in the form of webcasts back in 1999. For a few years now, the 3 major fashion weeks (New York, London and Milan) have been involved in live feeds of shows. Moreover, not too long ago the British Fashion Council re-vamped their online experience by teaming up with Rightster for London Fashion Week SS’12. According to Caroline Rush, the CEO of BFC, it was done to “provide our sponsors, designers and press partners with more ways to innovate and extract maximum value from their involvement in the London Fashion Week event.” For 2013, the trend has even taken new heights, as Singapore will host the first Digital Fashion Week (DFW). There will be no need for front rows because the audience will be the online viewers.

With the high growth of ecommerce, social media marketing and omni-channeling are becoming more mandatory. What the heck is omni-channeling? No need for confusion, it is simply the merging of various retail channels of distribution for example brick-and-mortar and online stores. You see ‘omni-sapiens’ like us need the full shopping experience. We would scout online for merchandise through blogs, popular fashion sites and numerous online retailers, then go to the mall seeking similar items or vice versa. This is why designers go out of their way to live stream their runway collections because they understand that consumers have the need to be a part of the merchandising process.

Anya Ayoung Chee sees the potential impact of live streaming on Pilar sales. She is able to market events such as “Fashion Rocks the Avenue” at little to no costs via social media. Anya has 90,481 followers on Facebook alone and this does not include her other social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram and Pages. Since she has such a large following, she is able to reach many consumers at one time and ensure that there is product knowledge about her collection. On the other hand, as the designer she would be able to see which item is the most popular via likes on Facebook or Instagram and even re-tweets on twitter. From this information, she would know how production should take place, which item should be pushed more and if to add on more colours or patterns for a particular style. Thus, increasing her ability to obtain larger sales figures.

However, the major problem of live streaming is that consumers want what they see now. Where is the Pilar collection available? For many department stores in the U.S., February/ March is the height of buying season for Spring/Summer. In fact, spring items are supposed to be already rolling in. So why are only some pieces from the ‘Carnival of Colour’ collection available on Anya Ayoung Chee website (sentence edited on 27/3/2013). It makes it seem that this entire buzz was created for no reason, because consumers do not even know where to purchase any of the pieces.

On a positive note, Trinidad’s fashion industry benefited greatly from this event. The international audience got a taste of our aesthetic and culture, which were represented by the Pilar collection and featured Carnival costumes. Moreover, local brands such as Liilah, Sandalias and Cocoa Vintage gained exposure through the event. It indicates that viable, local brands exist and are ready to take a step forward with the industry. In addition, upcoming designers can use “Fashion Rocks the Avenue” as a case study of how live-streaming and social media marketing can be used to gain national and international attention. Trinidad has the talent and the wealth to push local production of garments. We did it once and we can do it again.

Karl Lagerfeld and MELISSA shoes teamed up to produce a mini shoe collection, casting Cara Delevingne as their campaign girl.

I wanted to the maintain the shoe theme. While I was on the hunt for a good picture, I stumbled across (shoe) surrealism and Miss Lily's menu. That deadly combo left me no choice but to pick an image that reminded me of sex games and reggae.

Surrealists and fetishism...Caribbean people and their food.

3D Printed Heels

Today, I visited the 'Shoe Obsession' exhibition at the FIT museum with my Product Knowledge class. Every major shoe designer, fashion house and style was showcased in the gallery. While many of my classmates marveled at the Maison Martin Margiela glass heel, my eyes were set on Janina Alleyne's 3D printed Exoskeleton collection.

Alleyne is a young designer who recently graduated as a Shoewear Design student at De Montfort University in the UK. Before the exhibit, I never heard of 3D printed heels. I stared at the complex construction of these impeccable heels in awe. Articles even refer to it as 'very deserving of the term haute couture'. This high-tech method of creating wearable fashion is still in its infancy stage. So the few luxury goods made in this particular manner are extremely expensive.

Style Icon: Francesco Cominelli

In 2009, Francesco Cominelli became editor of Vogue Hommes International, which is an international men's fashion magazine based in Paris, France. It was one of the many magazines derived from the of the Condé Nast International family. Unfortunately, he died young, only in his mid-20's, in 2011 of natural causes.

This man was loved by many street-style photographers, and to illustrate his signifance in fashion, I found this quote by Tommy Ton describing Cominelli in a GQ feature:

“Francesco has a way of wearing clothes in such a way that they become completely unidentifiable on him. You wouldn’t know whether he’s wearing Kenzo or Zegna or a market find; that’s a gift of Francesco’s styling abilities. He has fun layering and mixing patterns, textures and colors, and it’s refreshingly young and sartorially playful at the same time.”

The reason I decided to shed some light on Cominelli is because I still believe he is recognized as a serious contributor to men's fashion. According to Fashion Snoops, the top ten key trends for menswear Spring 2013 are:

1. Contrast sleeve (in suiting & dress-shirts)

2. Globe Trotter theme (in prints)

3. Short suit

4. Wide leg pants

5. Bermuda shorts

6. Linen

7. Goldenrod pantone colour (yellow)

8. Double pocket shirt

9. Tropical, floral prints

10. Safari jacket

I believe Cominelli's past looks displayed interesting ways of approaching these current trends, while maintaining a strong sense of masculinity despite his Eurocentric manner. Majority of his looks have a floral motif in traditional menswear colours, which are neutrals such as navys, whites, creams and blacks. Moreover, from the above images you can see that he had a stronge sense of colour manipulation. This is important to observe, especially since coloured Chinos are an it-item for Spring 2013.

The revival of these images really validate how fashion works in a cycle and indicates how little change occurs within menswear year-by-year.

A Hat Affair

Since the wind is being such a pain in my arse lately, let's talk about covering up that head and those ears. I presented to you my collage of a hat affair! Round hats, parisian hats and my favourite beanies (particularly the Jil Sander Veiled beanie).

Plain beanie + embellishment + fabric glue= the fabulousness in the above photo!

Whether eating ice cream, talking on a cell phone or trotting down the road the Jil Sander Veil Beanie will always provide a fashion-forward and chic look. It screams I am a 'fashion killa' as my friend A$AP Rocky would say.

My little discovery in Urban Outfitters.

SHIT JUST GOT SERIOUS.

Fuck I'm in my Twenties! Three months later, the self-realization has finally hit me. After my bestie recently turned 20, we both semi-experienced of a mild panic attack thinking about what is to be expected of this new decade. (Please, forgive us).

It's like I finally reached the stage of having true responsibilities and my college clock is slowly ticking away close to its end. No more fun and games soon, I will be entering the world of work and play. I mean I have upgraded to cocktails and invested in day-time heels but..Does this mean that I should stop taking selfies in the bathroom and try outside instead? And I really dont want to get rid of the duck face. I'm not going to lie...it's my go-to facial expression and it makes me feel slightly sexy.

As for men, the word husband has lately been repulsing me. It also does not help the situation when my grandmother goes into detail about how she was almost put on the shelves with the dust, because she was 20 and still not engage. The scary part is that the woman is so serious about my lack of engagement. Hellur...granny... my parents got divorced so I think marriage is slightly icky. Spare me nah? To make matters worse, Paul (aka my father) has been having a lot of sit-down-daughter-and-father moments, looking at me dead in the eyes and sternly telling me to choose my options wisely because this is the age where relationships get serious. Pops, I know what you are subliminally trying to tell me and I'm sorry, but it is now clear to me that I do have a preference for them brown-skinned men. Who knew? (Everyone!) All this time I thought it was just coincidence.

In terms of my career, I am in school? I know I should do more but I want to be young, wild and freeeeeeeeee!

I can not wait until I turn 21 B) I will ball for a few days battling my week long hangover and then bawl because I only have one more year left of this child's play lifestyle.

Love magazine features Kate Moss on their cover for their Spring/Summer 2013 issue. The composition of her half submerged in a bathtub is phenomenal! It just captures the whole idea of rebirth and baptism as she is being cleansed by the water.

I also like that they added a little humour in the mix with the caption, "Heroin chic. What was all that about? 'I have no idea'"Obviously addiction is a very serious topic, but it nice to see that she can talk so freely and lightly about the situation now.

Fashionlee for the Road.

In the back of my mind, I could hear the intro to 'Differentology' by Bunji Garlin. Are we ready for the road? Seems as although 2013 is definitely the year to jump out and call yourself an islandista, especially after the public marriage of carnival and fashion or by its popular name, "Fashion Rocks the Avenue."

However, don't be fooled Carnival, like fashion, has been creating many of its own trends for years. For example, tell me you don't think it's weird when you see a masquerader in a pair of sneakers instead of boots! This year, on the other hand, more attention is being placed on Monday-wear and accessories. So I put together a collage of hot ideas for the road.

BODY SUIT AND CHAIN.

Designers such as Christian Boucaud and J. Angelique are pushing monokinis as the It-item for Monday. If you are tight on a budget from all that fete-ing, just find yourself an over-the-top body chain to go over a simple monokin (Micles?). You can literally find them in any boutique around Trinidad.

SHORT SHORTS.

But, why not a sexy pair of shorts? I selected a pair of Sekarsari Sadhati shorts to show you. The design has a butterfly opening, which adds sensuality and edge to the look. You could pair it with a bandeau top, add a statement piece (Wonderful World has a great selection of fringe statement necklaces) and you would be good to go!

ADORNED HEADPIECES.

Another idea that I thought would be fun is the indian-inspired headpiece. It was definitely a big trend of late 2012 that has continued on into 2013. I featured this beautiful headpiece by Marianna Giordana to feed you some inspiration.

BLINKERS.

Lastly, we can not forget the eyes! In terms of eyewear, this John Lennon round-rim frame is about to be road kill so why not kill it on the road? I decided to show you this unique take on the trend by the House of Holland company. Cache is usually a good spot to go for cheap and trendy sunglasses.

MAKEUP.

Since I am already targeting the eyes, I found this beautiful picture of a model still in her runway makeup. I like how saturated and square the eyeshadow looks and the gems were used it such a tasteful manner to outline her eyes. I will be re-posting the pic on the Facebook page just in case you need a better look.

Re-read, take notes and feel inspired! Have a blast on the road ladies. I will definitely be semi-jealous of your Carnival experiences.

Paparazzin: Despers Pan Yard

Spotted in Desperadoes pan-yard, fresh man Stcry! It's a French name so don't butcher the pronunciation too much. These days, I am constantly being told that I am trouble. Me? No. But after requesting an early kiss for his 80th birthday tomorrow, I could not stop my tongue from saying, "Well, you going to be a sweet man til you die!" Yet I am the troublemaker.

Regardless, his personality matched his kit! He seemed like the kind of man who can pull off wearing a suit every day, but he was only wearing it because he just came back from a meeting. His sunglasses was what really got me interested in his ensemble, but then I noticed the his tie-pin and patterned handkerchief which made it even more intriguing.

The joys of meeting new people. Hope you enjoy your birthday tomorrow sweet man!

Designer Profile: Kaleen Sanois

Being an avid reader, you would already know that I recently did a photo shoot featuring Ms. Sanois' designs. If not, have no fear just scroll down...it's literally the post before this.

Since that has been cleared up, let me give you a little more insight on the designer's thoughts. Kaleen is a ready-to-wear designer who aims to dress for a woman that always has the need to look 'on point' throughout the day. She caters for something that is not overdone but not boring or as she put it, "more expressive than regular wear."

Straight from the designer's mouth, she noted that leather should be considered an essential, which I also agree with. For example, (on the left) Jess looks so fierce in that flare, leather mini! Definitely not something to wear to fog up the place (at a Carnival fete), but she would surely steam up the club.

It must be noted that Kaleen is not currently a designer for the masses, but more for her personal wardrobe. At the moment she is taking her design career at a steady pace until she sees the best opportunity, in terms of time, to fully launch a line.

Vacant Spaces

Have you ever found yourself in an empty space and thought about the endless possibilities it may provide? Your imagination can go wild a little bit. This past weekend, I decided to do a photo shoot with Jess (the model) featuring designs by Kaleen Sanois. To assist with the styling of the shoot, Sheneice James added some sass to the mix. (Her commentary was definitely a needed chuckle). Not too sure what scenes they might have created or did not create in the presence of a vacant space. But, for me, it certainly brought a sense of nostalgia walking into a house that I had not been in for almost a decade. In a way, it was a childish delight reminiscing on the little memories I had experienced there. All the rooms seemed so much smaller than what I remembered, which made me realize how much bigger and older I got. One thing for sure, I was happy that I did not cry (phew!).

Wait...it's 2013?

Well I guess the island life has gotten to me. No worries, I am still alive and kicking.

As for updates on the blog, I had a photo shoot this weekend which I am excited to reveal soon. I also have a bunch of interviews, with the young talent of Trinidad and Tobago, marked down on my calendar. So be on the lookout for video editorials, pictorials and more!

However, there is something I need to address about 2013. Unfortunately, this year has already experienced two losses of two very young and from what I remember, beautiful souls. I am taking this opportunity to mention that we were born to die, which is why you must turn each passing second into a memorable moment. Create happiness during the good ones and lessons from the bad ones.

I hope 2013 brings you all beautiful memories.
