The Museum at FIT presents Eco-Fashion: Going Green, an exhibition exploring fashions relationship with the environment. Eco-fashion refers to the work of designers who use, produce, and/or promote sustainable, ethical, and environmentally-conscious products. Although eco-fashion is one of contemporary fashions most compelling practices, fashion and the environment have had a longstanding, multifaceted, and complex connection rarely explored

Featuring more than 100 garments, accessories, and textiles from the mid-18th century to the present, Eco-Fashion: Going Green will examine positive and negative environmental practices over the past two centuries, providing historical context for todays eco-fashion movement. The exhibition will emphasize how each stage of fashion productionfrom fiber to finished garmenthas environmental consequences. The extensive range of contemporary examples in the exhibition will showcase the commitment of both designers and consumers to meet these environmental challenges.

Eco-Fashion: Going Green will begin with some of the finest examples of sustainable fashion by current, cutting-edge labels, including Edun, Bodkin, FIN, and NOIR. The approaches these brands take to social and environmental issues will act as lenses through which the exhibition will view the historical garments and their various effects on the environment.

The earliest object on display will be a silk brocade gown, circa 1760. Eighteenth-century silk was painstakingly woven on hand looms, making it costly, complex to manufacture, and cherished. Since garments with lasting value are integral to todays eco-fashion movement, this gown will act as a chronological starting point for the exhibition.

Bremont Watch Company is working with The National Museum of the Royal Navy (Portsmouth) to create a limited edition watch unlike any other watch ever created. Each mechanical retrograde watch will be made with original parts from the HMS Victory.

HMS Victory is the only remaining 18th Century ship anywhere in the world and remains the oldest serving warship still in commission. She still retains her own Captain, offices and crew and flies the flag of the Second Sea Lord, Commander in Chief Naval Home Command. Laid down in 1759 and launched in 1765.

In 1922 she was moved to a dry dock at Portsmouth, England, and preserved as a museum ship. She continues to be flagship of the Second Sea Lord and is the oldest naval ship still in commission.

Many years of exposure have taken their toll on HMS Victory and in 2010 a major refit was commissioned to preserve her for future generations. To commemorate Nelson and HMS Victory, Bremont is producing a totally unique watch that will include parts of oak timber and copper from the original ship. Part of the proceeds of each watch will go towards the refurbishment and preservation of the ship.

Giles English says, Nelson went to my school and as a boy he always fascinated me, I remember clearly the first time I visited HMS Victory. Over the last few years both Nick and myself have been working with the Royal Navy Fleet air arm Heritage and thats when we heard about the restoration of HMS Victory. With no hesitation we approached the Navy and discussed the possibility of creating a watch using original parts from the ship. Not only did we want to make the watch unique but we also want it to be a horological masterpiece.

Blue iris has been chosen as Pantone, Inc.’s 2008 “Color of the Year” and various shades of blue have appeared on fashion runways in recent seasons, but textile artists have been using this bold color for several millennia — and continue to do so today. “BLUE,” on view at The Textile Museum in Washington, D.C. April 4 through September 18, 2008, explores the creation and meaning of the color blue on textiles produced across time and place, with particular emphasis on contemporary artists’ use of natural indigo dyes. This exhibition follows up the 2007 Textile Museum exhibition “RED.”

“BLUE” features 30 historical textiles from the Americas, Africa, Asia and the Middle East — as well as installations by contemporary artists working in Japan, Venezuela and elsewhere. Complementing the exhibition is a film by Mary Lance, a work-in-progress of the upcoming documentary “Blue Alchemy: Stories of Indigo.”
