Objective: To react quickly to balls thrown to first base by infielders and becoming confident in fielding bad throws.

Set-Up: First baseman sets up in her ready position with a coach/teammate throwing the ball from different positions. The first baseman would drop step with her right foot (chest open to the field) and run back to get to the base, putting her foot on the middle of the inside of the base. The foot placed on the bag should be the left foot for left handed first basemen and the right foot for the right handed players.

Drill: The coach would throw the ball starting from behind the pitcher’s mound once the player gets her foot on the bag and turns open to receive the ball. The ball can be thrown to the player’s left and right. Many times players stretch too soon and don’t step toward the ball. Wherever the ball is thrown, the arm and glove extends as well as the leg on that side of the body (glove side) straight toward the ball. The first baseman wants to get comfortable getting set quickly and stepping to the ball as soon as it leaves the hand of the person throwing it, making sure to step straight in line with where the ball is going. When the ball is not too far to either side and is more in front of the body, the first baseman wants to get as much as a stretch as possible, making sure to keep the back foot on the bag during the stretch. The coach can move all around the field doing this drill, throwing the ball hard and soft, and starting closer and further from different positions.

PHASE 2: Working on balls that bounce before reaching the bag:
To get a player’s confidence up at first base on bad throws, start out by throwing
long bounces to first base. Once the player recognizes that the ball is going to be low and bounce, she should wait to step and react as she sees where the ball is going to bounce. The first baseman needs to keep her head down and glove open and scoop the ball. We need to remind the first baseman to try to catch the ball on a long hop or to go reach for it and make it a short hop. If it bounces 5 or more feet away, we should not step out, but should read the long hop and field the ball. If it is closer on the hop, we need to extend our glove foot out as far as possible and try to keep the glove on the inside of your leg (not outside of your body). Fingers will be down to the ground and you want to reach forward as you scoop the ball. The coach can throw long and short hops, giving the first baseman a chance to read the ball. The coach should only start to throw the ball hard when the player has success on easier bounces. Confidence will build success. Our goal is to help our first basemen to become a wall at first base, not letting anything get by them.

Leah later went on to become an Olympic Gold Medalist in 1996, 2000, and 2004. She was named in 2006 to the NCAA Division I Softball 25th Anniversary Team. Leah was inducted into the Athletes in Action Hall of Faith in 2008. Her career stats stand at .428 batting average, 338 hits, 53 doubles, 5 triples, 7 home runs and 181 RBI’s.

I was attending the NFCA conference last December in Orlando Florida, and woke up early one morning to go to the FCA Softball Breakfast. It turned out that Patty Gasso, the head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners was speaking. It was a great presentaion that moring, she talked about last years WCWS, her life, and strong Christian beliefs.

Now in her 17th season at the University of Oklahoma, head coach Patty Gasso has molded the OU softball program into a national power and permanently placed herself among the elite college softball coaches in the country. Produced By Gary Leland

The Sooners have reached the Women’s College World Series five times during her tenure, in the process, advanced to the postseason in each of her previous 16 seasons. The WCWS run began in 2000 when her team won the NCAA National Championship in OU’s first appearance.

Is she the best coach in the history of Oklahoma softball? Undoubtedly.

Is she the greatest coach in Big 12 history? The stats say she is.

Could she be one of the best coaches to ever coach college softball? Each season, she continues to build what is a very strong argument.

Currently in her 21st season as a head coach, Gasso has a career collegiate coaching record of 936-309-2 (.751) and holds an overall record of 774-250-2 (.754) at the University of Oklahoma. She has won more Big 12 games (199-64) than any coach in the league’s history and has twice as many wins as any other coach in OU history. Gasso’s Sooner teams have finished second or higher 12 different times since the inception of the Big 12 in 1996. They have won 75 percent of their Big 12 contests and OU has claimed four Big 12 regular season and four championship titles under her direction.

Numerous Sooner players have prospered under Gasso’s tutelage and garnered national, regional and conference recognition. She has directed 36 All-Americans, 80 All-Region honorees and 107 all-conference selections.

In the Big 12 era, seven Sooners have been named Big 12 Player of the Year, two have been selected as Big 12 Freshman of the Year, one as Big 12 Newcomer and Lauren Eckermann was named OU’s first Big 12 Pitcher of the Year in 2007. In 2010, Amber Flores became the first player in league history to earn Player of the Year honors twice.

In addition, 2005 graduate Heather Scaglione was a two-time Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year. Savannah Long became the first infielder to earn the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year honor in 2008. Lindsey Vandever earned the award in 2010.

The OU softball success under Gasso has also spilled over into the classroom where the Sooners have been honored with 78 academic all-conference honors. Six of those have gone on to become Academic All-Americans, including Lana Moran, the 2000 Academic All-American of the Year.

Gasso and her staff have consistently been recognized for their efforts on and off the field. The staff was awarded three consecutive Speedline/NFCA Midwest Region Coaching Staff of the Year awards from 1999-2001 and received the national honor in 2000. Gasso and staff have claimed the Midwest honor in five of their 15 seasons with the most recent award coming in 2004. In addition, Gasso has been named the Big 12 and Midwest Region Coach of the Year in 1996, 1999 and 2000. She was named the 2009 Big 12 Coach of the Year.

Gasso’s career with the Sooners began in 1995 when she arrived at OU after five successful years at Long Beach City College. Her accomplishments during her tenure at LBCC and since led to Gasso being named to the LBCC Hall of Champions in 2004. Later during the 2004 summer, Gasso was inducted into the inaugural class of the Long Beach City Baseball and Softball Hall of Fame. Her success in her hometown of Long Beach set the foundation for a spectacular career in Norman. Gasso was also inducted into the El Camino City College Hall of Fame in 2000.

In her first season at the helm, the Sooners recorded a 43-23 record, finished second in the conference and reached the regional final. Several Sooners received awards for their play during the 1995 season, including 11 players who garnered all-conference accolades (four on the first team).

Gasso and the Sooners reached new heights in 1996, recording a 50-20 record, a first-ever Big 12 Championship, and another regional final berth. OU dominated the inaugural Big 12 Tournament, putting five players on the all-tournament squad. Pitcher Jill Most was named the tourney MVP.

Gasso’s 1996 squad also became the first team outside of the states of California or Arizona to win the prestigious Pony Tournament. Gasso was recognized by her peers for her team’s performance, earning the Big 12 Coach-of-the-Year award. Again, Sooner players were mentioned as some of the league’s best with 10 players receiving All-Big 12 recognition.

Gasso continued the trend of reaching new heights in 1997 when the team recorded the then-second best record in school history (55-19). The season was highlighted by two impressive 12-game winning streaks that helped the team to a second-place finish in the Big 12. For the fourth consecutive year, OU advanced to a NCAA Regional. It marked the first time in school history that OU hosted the event.

The 1998 season was probably one of Gasso’s best coaching jobs. However, it wasn’t because of the number of wins and losses or the tournaments won by the Sooners. It was due to the fact the team featured six freshmen. Gasso led the young group to a 49-15 record, a second-place conference finish and a No. 1 seed in a NCAA Regional. Five Sooners were named to the all-conference squad and three players were named to the All-Midwest Region team.

In 1999, Gasso led OU to its sixth straight NCAA regional playoff appearance and her team continued to demonstrate that she is one of the top coaches in the country. Along the path to the regional playoffs in Baton Rouge, La., the Sooners seized several awards and honors. For the second time in the three-year history of the Big 12 Conference, OU was crowned regular season champion. The Sooners, who finished with a 40-16 overall record, won the Big 12 with an 11-3 record.

Oklahoma fell just short of its goal, the Women’s College World Series, but the Sooners proved once again that they were a national powerhouse. That year, OU defeated several top-25 teams including Louisiana State, Texas, Massachusetts, Oregon, Texas A&M, Missouri and Nebraska. In addition, the Sooners swept the four-game series with state rival Oklahoma State. The last victory against the Cowgirls in the regular season finale clinched the Big 12 title.

Not only were Gasso’s players honored for their accomplishments in 1999, but she was also recognized for her solid coaching effort. Gasso was named the 1999 Big 12 Coach of the Year and joined her staff as the Midwest Regional Coaching Staff of the Year.

The 2000 Sooners won their third Big 12 regular season title since the league began in 1996 and hosted their first NCAA Regional since 1997. Behind an explosive offense and a dominant defense, the Sooners rolled to a 66-8 record and won their final eight games of the season to capture the first softball national championship in school history.

Four Sooners earned All-America honors, with Lisa Carey and Ashli Barrett earning first team recognition. Outfielder Erin Evans and pitcher Stewart were both third team All-Americans and Jennifer Stewart was named the Most Outstanding Player of the WCWS. The accolades rolled in as Gasso was named the Dallas Morning News Big 12 Coach of the Year. She and her staff also earned the Midwest Region Coach of the Year award and Speedline/NFCA Division I National Coaching Staff of the Year.

Following the 2000 National Championship season, Gasso’s 2001 squad continued the string of success. The 2001 team went on to match many of the accomplishments of the previous year, including a return trip to the Women’s College World Series, a 50-win season and four All-America selections. The team also established its own successes by compiling a school-record 23-game win streak and the program’s first Big 12 Tournament title since 1996.

In 2002, Oklahoma went 49-16 and 14-2 in the Big 12. Taking their team motto “Triple Threat” to heart, the Sooners swept their third consecutive NCAA Regional and advanced to a third straight Women’s College World Series.

The 2003 squad was led by five seniors and sophomore hurler Kami Keiter. OU reached its fourth consecutive WCWS by becoming the first Sooner squad to claim a regional championship away from Norman. OU ended the season with a 47-14 record and won one game before being eliminated from the 2003 WCWS.

Objective: Teach communication and aggressive defense in the outfield.

Set-Up: Have 2 outfielders side by side in the outfield, preferably in left center and right center. Have a coach set up to hit balls from the plate.

PHASE 1: The first ball hit, should be for the defender in right field. This ball is going to be hit towards left center and will force her to sprint hard after it, not allowing it to hit the ground. Her second outfielder’s job is loud communication to help her with ball judgement. The next ball will be hit towards right center for the left fielder to defend. Same principle here.

PHASE 2: Hit balls in the middle of the two defenders, now knowing that they both have the range to get to it. The two athletes are to communicate loud with one another to safely and successfully finish the play by making the catch. When finish with this phase of the drill, you can rotate other athletes in for the same drill.

To make the drill harder, make the gap between the 2 defenders wider, while keeping it in perspective how much ground each defender should be able to cover. You can also implement diving with this drill, to emphasize that no balls should hit the ground with out maximal effort exhibited.

Current: India is still actively involved in the softball community when she has breaks from a full time Registered Nursing career. She works in Neonatal Intensive Care Units nationwide. When home in Louisville, Kentucky, she assists as coach at Ballard High School, where the softball team has reaped state rankings as well as national rankings in recent years. She is proud to assist in her goal of getting student athletes college scholarships on and off the field. She also regularly participates in camps and clinics in the states and has a large roster of regional talents she gives softball instruction. She graduated UT with a nursing degree in 2009 and a Psychology degree in 2007.

2007: Led the SEC in hitting (.544) and on base percentage (.565). Her honors included SEC Player of The Year, 1st Team All-American, 1st Team Academic All-American, 1st Team All-SEC and World Series All-Tournament Team. Chiles managed to set UT records in a duo of offensive categories while ranking 4th nationally in batting average (.459) and 6th nationally in stolen bases in the 2007-2008 campaign. Chiles was drafted by the Akron Racers professional softball team and played the summer of 2008. She was invited to the tryout for the Pan-American USA National Team but unfortunately suffered a torn ACL and labrum prior to the tryout.

2006: Finished the season rated second in the SEC in hitting at .437. Started out 2007 as the league’s top returning hitter…Garnered 56 starts in 65 games played in 2006 while stealing 19 bases, scoring 48 runs and tallying an on-base percentage of .469 with 10 RBI…Was 6 of 10 (.600) in SEC Tournament to help team clinch championship and took home All-Tournament honors. Had a career-best 12-game hitting streak ended against Northwestern in the WCWS…Selected to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District IV first-team squad.

2005: Fourth on the team with a .353 average after starting 55 contests in the outfield and playing in 76 of UT’s 82 matchups…Scored 31 runs and registered 48 hits with 17 stolen bases…Selected to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District IV second-team squad as well as Academic All-SEC for the second straight season…

2004: Served as a pinch runner in 43 games, scoring in a whopping 21 of those!

High School: Attended Ballard High School, where she lettered in softball four times and captained the team as a senior…Was a two-time all-state selection…The Bruins captured numerous tournaments during her career…A top candidate for the Kentucky Miss Softball Award… Also competed for the Louisville Sluggers club team and batted in the lead-off spot…Was an academic all-state selection.

Here you go! Another in my set of blog posts called 10 questions. On these short posts I send 10 questions to great softball players, and coaches. Then I am post the questions with their answers.

This week former Tennessee Volunteer, and former pro player India Chiles answers my 10 questions. Written By Gary Leland

India Chiles

A. I started playing when I was 4 years old with recreation tee ball! From there, played every season and progressed through to college and professional.

Q. Was there anyone special in your life that helped you become a great player?

A. My parents both played a huge role! I come from a large family of 7 children, and 5 of us were big in athletics. So my parents allowing me to stick with it in such a busy family dynamic speaks volumes! Also my high school coach, Alan Jones, believed in me more than I believed in myself and was my motivation to pursue on a collegiate level.

Q. How do you get ready for a game?

A. Quiet alone time while I take about an hour to get ready for the game at home. This helps me keep my emotions in check and remind myself of the game plan that day. Then LOUD motivational music to get my adrenaline rush on the way to the park. From there, my focus is on and its game time!

Q. What do you like to do when you are not involved with softball?

A. I love sharing my knowledge of the game with coaches and players at seminars, practices, banquets,etc. I love traveling the country and world and am blessed to have a career that allows for this! Of course, I love family time with the Chiles Clan!

Q. What factors do you feel have influenced you the most to become the player and you are today?

A. A strong understanding of psychology and how we allow this to fuel or hinder our success. An awesome childhood enjoying softball kept me in the sport. Then getting to become a Lady Vol and learning how to REALLY compete with my teammates.

Q. Do you have any routines are superstitions that you implement regularly?

A. Pre game Snickers bar. Pre game reading of the FCA Competitor’s Creed.

Q. What is your favorite softball memory?

A. Coming back from Senior year injuries to play in my final WCWS at what seemed like close to 100%… What a blessing!

Q. How much value do you place on mental training? Do you have any advice for others in this area?

A. The mental game is the difference between being good and great. At a young age, it’s not so much mental training as it is having a good mentality. Gaining confidence with each experience or learning from every play.

Almost all of it. When I train kids today, I focus more on their mental training than their physical. At some point, we all know how to throw hard, run bases, dive after balls, and hit a ball. So what sets the elite athletes apart from the rest? Answer = mental toughness. My advice for others is to understand this principle and run with it! Learn to compete with your best SELF and it’s hard to peak as an athlete.

Q. If you could do anything else in the world as a profession, what would it be and why?

A. I would play Major League Baseball, and make lots of $$$ doing what I LOVE!

Q. What is the greatest obstacle you have had to overcome in your playing and/or coaching career?

A. Being able to deal with adversity over and over. I was recruited as a right handed infielder that had no experience in the outfield. Then was thrown the obstacle of switching to hit left handed and play outfield sophomore season. I felt alone, but knew I had to catch up and be as good as my teammates in order to play. Then to have my first ever sports injuries all hit in senior season was tough, but I sucked it up and realized it wasn’t time to sulk, but to figure out a way to make it work with what I had. People described me as emotionless in the process, but there’s a lot they didn’t see.

Coach Ed Marcum – Teaching The Aggressive Hitter. Produced By Gary Leland

This weeks video is hosted by Coach Ed Marcum and he is teaching about the Aggressive Hitters mindset. Every fastpitch softball coach teaches hitting a little different. Main thing for softball players and any athlete is to stay relaxed. The first thing in a swing is to drive the front elbow forward and make sure to stay inside the ball. The power comes from the hips; drive the back leg forward, knee to knee. Make sure that your fastpitch softball hitters stay in. Very important that the head does not go up and down. Coach Ed Marcum goes into more detail about the basics of hitting.

Repetition is extremely important. Confidence is the key of an aggressive hitter. Hitting is so mental and to do that the girls have to be confident in what they have done. They have to be a competitor. Athletes cannot be afraid to fail, they need to learn to compete and be disciplined. Know the umpire’s strike zone. To be a good hitter you need to put in as much practice time as a pitcher puts in.

Coaching Girls Ponytail Softball

Coach Courtney Scott – Proper Footwork For Catchers. Produced By Gary Leland

Courtney Scott is the assistant softball coach at the University of Louisville. She talks about the firm base and how important it is to stay low. Catchers need to be comfortable.

Coach Scott goes through the proper footwork to do a throw down to second. She talks about the pop and the transition is at the ear. The most important is so that the catchers are comfortable. One of the catchers that Coach Scott works with does a pivot throw. An issue she has is that she gets too wide of a base. Catchers that are not strong there is a step through motion that could work for them. There is also a throw from your knees.

With a runner going to third make sure that you are clearing the batter by stepping behind or around the batter. Always a good idea to lead with your back foot, decreases the amount of steps that are needed.

She also talks about proper footwork to pick up a bunt, as well as blocking mechanics.

Cat Osterman

A. I started playing when I was 5.

Q. I actually played in first grade, but quit after 1 season. I played almost every sport growing up. When I was 10 I attempted softball again, and started pitching when I was 11.

Q. Was there anyone special in your life that helped you become a great player?

My pitching coach Bobby Smith is to be given some credit too. He taught me how to move a ball, how to adjust pitches, and more than anything pushed me to keep learning.

I can’t forget Ken Eriksen, who is the head coach of the USA National Team and at University of South Florida. I met Coach E when I was 13 or 14 at a USF pitching camp. He is now like a second father, but over the course of my career he has been there to help me physically, mentally and emotionally with pitching and life. I constantly learn from him, and don’t imagine I would have matured as well and fast without his help. He is a great mentor.

Q. How do you get ready for a game?

A. I don’t have anything really specific. I usually drive to the field with music playing. I like to eat a healthy substantial meal. If we have BP in the cages I will read a book. It’s another day at the office, so I try to just keep it in perspective.

Q. What do you like to do when you are not involved with softball?

A. Well, the amount of time I am not involved in softball is pretty small since I coach as well. When I am away from the game, I like working out. I love to read, and more than anything I love my two puppy dogs. Eventually, I would like to travel more, as that is something I have always wanted to do.

Q. What factors do you feel have influenced you the most to become the player and you are today?

A. I would say my work ethic and being a perfectionist. My dad told me I was never to practice less than 100% no matter how long we were going to be practicing. He told me if I did not want to practice, then to tell him because he wasn’t going to force me. I would say my work ethic and being a perfectionist. Q. Do you have any routines are superstitions that you implement regularly?

A. I think most of what I do is habit more than superstition. I put my uniform on the same way, socks always last. I warm up my pitches in the same order, but not because if I don’t I won’t throw well. It’s just routine by now. Only real superstition is that I don’t step on the chalk lines.

Q. What is your favorite softball memory?

A. There are so many. I remember games with so much detail it’s crazy. I’d have to say that absolute best memory though is winning the Gold Medal in the 2004 Olympics. Standing on the podium, listening to our National Anthem, with a group of girls who just spent 11 months working our butts off together to be the best, in front of our families… it’s an indescribable feeling.

Q. How much value do you place on mental training? Do you have any advice for others in this area?

A. The mental game is the difference between being good and great. At a young age, it’s not so much mental training as it is having a good mentality. Gaining confidence with each experience or learning from every play.

Once the fundamentals are mastered, and an athlete is maturing some types of mental training can definitely enhance consistency. Sport psychology has always been my number one area of interest. It really can be fascinating.

Q. If you could do anything else in the world as a profession, what would it be and why?

A. I really have no idea. I have always wanted to be a coach, and that is the path I am on. I couldn’t imagine my life without sports. I guess it could be fun to be an event planner or an interior decorator. I’ve never really wished to be something different.

Q. What is the greatest obstacle you have had to overcome in your playing and/or coaching career?

A. I think the biggest obstacle I’ve had to deal with is balancing life with softball. Softball has given me great opportunities, but there have been many times I forget to balance life with it in order to keep happiness and sanity.

Coach Courtney Scott – The Importance Of The Drop Ball. Produced By Gary Leland

Courtney Scott is the assistant softball coach at the University of Louisville. She talks about the importance of the drop ball for the fastpitch pitcher. The advantage of a good drop ball is that it keeps the ball in the park in an offensive game.  Allows the runners to only advance base to base.  There are four ways to throw it.

The peel drop, is the hardest to buy into but one of the most effective.  You want to grab it on the “C” and put as many fingertips on the seam and as close together as you can.  The reason for the “C” is to get on the four seams.  It creates a strong spin. Don’t see a ton of break with this pitch, it is working on its own, but it is very easy on the body and be disciplined with.

The next drop ball is the rolling peel. It is held the exact same way as the peel drop.  You come through with a relaxed wrist and snap down.

The roll over is on the “U” versus on the “C”. On the right side of the “U” and using pressure points on your fingers.

The last drop is the pull back. holding it the same as the peel drop.  The difference is that you release it at your back hip.  Full force is better to get through your body and all the way through to your catcher.

Improving Your Lead Offs. Produced By Gary Leland

This week Coach Dalton Ruer talks about how to improve your lead off bases.

This weeks question came from a parent that was wanting to know how to help their athlete get a better lead. Parents can help their fastpitch softball player by videoing what their child is doing.  Fastpitch softball players can leave the base when the pitcher lets go of the ball.  So, while the parent is recording their softball player they should be able to see the pitcher in the screen as well so the athlete knows when they are leaving the base.

A. I started playing when I was 5.

Q. Was there anyone special in your life that helped you become a great player?

A. My father, Edwin Watley. He was my first coach turned into my biggest fan!

Q. How do you get ready for a game?

A. Love having at least an hour or 2 to myself to just relax, eat, and listen to music.

Q. What do you like to do when you are not involved with softball?

A. I love spending time with my family & friends. I love traveling and seeing new places and see how different people live across the world!

Q. What factors do you feel have influenced you the most to become the player and you are today?

A. I would soley place all credit to the player I am today to my support system….all who would include would be my Parents and some amazing coaches along the way.

Q. Do you have any routines are superstitions that you implement regularly?

A. Not really.

Q. What is your favorite softball memory?

A. I have many, and actually still making them. The ones that come to mind first is winning a National Championship in college. Also winning a Gold Medal. Winning a Gold Medal will be something I will rememeber and cherish when I’m 90 years old! Will never forget the feeling I had standing on the podium in front of my Parents and representing my country.

Q. How much value do you place on mental training? Do you have any advice for others in this area?

A. I think an athletes mental state is what separates he goods from the greats!!! Being able to have a short term memory when failure hits is a taught skill and should be something that is practice daily on exactly how you as an individual handle failure. In our sport failure happens far to often so you have to perfect bouncing back fast!!!

Q. If you could do anything else in the world as a profession, what would it be and why?

A. I would be the female version to Donald Trump and own a lot everywhere!

Q. What is the greatest obstacle you have had to overcome in your playing and/or coaching career?

A. Being able to constantly reinvent myself. As an athlete it feel so natural to stick with your strengths and never really evolve. To stay ahead of the trends, it’s so important to constantly evolve & reinvent daily to stay ahead of the curve

Coach Diane Ninemire Interview. Produced By Gary Leland

This is an interview with Coach Diane Ninemire the head coach for the Cal Golden Bears. She graduated from University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1980. She played basketball and softball while in college. She continued her education at Texas Women’s University in Denton, Texas. Coach Ninemire has wanted to be a coach since 4th grade.

She played travel softball starting at age 10. She believes that youth should play many sports. She sees a lot of injuries of softball players that have over worked specific joints and muscles coming from playing softball all the time. Coach Ninemeire has many softball accomplishments including 1,000 wins and winning the 2002 Women’s College World Series. She says that team had a mission and a purpose. She believes that the will to win is more important than talent on the field.

The moment that she will remember for the rest of her life will be during that WCWS top of the 7th against Arizona the score was tied 0-0. They had lead that inning off with a walk. Then with 2 outs proceeded to score 6 runs, to win the game.

If you are a regular reader you know I started a new set of blog posts called 10 questions. On these blog posts I send 10 questions to great softball players, and coaches. Then I am posting the questions with their answers.

This week Professional Player Megan Jo Willis answers our 10 questions. Written By Gary Leland

Megan Jo Willis

A. I started playing softball when I was 9 years old

Q. Was there anyone special in your life that helped you become a great player?

A. There are a few people, number one would be my father, Mike Willis. He is the one who taught me how to play catch. We would go out and play catch with a baseball all the time before even really knowing what softball was.

Then there was the Jones family. My best friend Lisa, is the one who brought me to my first softball game (and ASU game). Her father started the AZ Hotshots and her three older sisters all played in that organization…her and her dad invited me to play on the 10u team.

Then there was Ann Peterson, my private coach. She was the one who helped me transition into becoming a catcher!

Lastly, my final travel ball coach Tony Rico. He helped form my softball mind. He educated me on how to call a game, we both worked together more on catching and fine tuning some small things. Tony helped prepare me for college and taught me more about life then just softball.

Q. How do you get ready for a game?

A. I don’t have any specific routine. I don’t get to excited, try to sleep in as long as possible. sometimes get a workout in, sometimes just make sure to get a big breakfast in (my favorite meal). I tend to put my uniform on the same on game days and always make sure to have a good music playlist…which changes daily.

Q. What do you like to do when you are not involved with softball?

A. I love traveling! I have had the opportunity to travel to a few different countries over the past couple years and it has really opened my eyes! I have learned so much by living in another culture (Japan) and have realized that I want to see more. I want to learn more about how others live, what they believe in and how they get along from day to day. It’s a big world and I have only seen just a small part of it.

Q. What factors do you feel have influenced you the most to become the player and you are today?

A. Determination and failure. I have always strived to be the best, but have never quite hit that mark in all aspects of the game. But its my determination that keeps me going. I set goals for myself all the time, sometimes I achieve them and sometimes I don’t. If I don’t, I reassess and then try again. If I do, then I continue on a new goal.

Q. Do you have any routines are superstitions that you implement regularly?

A. Not really.

Q. What is your favorite softball memory?

A. My Junior year at Texas. Super regionals against Washington. It was one of the best games of my life!! That atmosphere at Red and Charline McCombs field was like I have never seen before!

We were winning by quite a bit, we all knew we were going to the world series and I have never seen our team hit and play like we did that day! Tina Boutelle hit a 3 home run to put a big (for us) lead on the board. Then we tacked a few more on, then in the top of the 7th my best friend, Chez Seivers, and I hit back to back homeruns, right over our dads in left field.

It would be the last time I got to play at Texas with both Chez and Tine, and to go out like they did couldn’t have been more special. Our dads were up on a decked out UT bus, celebrating the victory and spraying champagne everywhere. Our fans were going nuts, as were we! We were heading to the world series yet again!

Q. How much value do you place on mental training? Do you have any advice for others in this area?

A. Mental training is what changes an athlete from good to great!. This is when you are able to make adjustments on your own, trust in yourself that you know what you are doing and how to fix or not fix anything.

Its when you understand that you did everything right, yet you happen to hit the ball right at someone. You begin to build a very strong self confidence. I encourage everyone to work on their mental training, understanding there is more ways to get better then by taking 100 reps. You can video yourself, and watch and see where you may be able to make an adjustment to get faster, stronger or more accurate. You become your own coach.

Q. If you could do anything else in the world as a profession, what would it be and why?

A. To be honest I have no idea. I think I would like to still be a professional athlete of some sort. Maybe Beach Volleyball! You get to train on the beach, travel around the world, and have the chance to play in the Olympics!

Q. What is the greatest obstacle you have had to overcome in your playing and/or coaching career?

A. Not listening to my critics. I have had many people over my career tell me I wasn’t a good hitter. I was only where I was because of my catching abilities. On paper, that was one easy conclusion to make. However, I had to believe in not only myself but my coaches as well. They hadn’t given up on me, which meant I couldn’t either.

I was never an All American, yet I kept finding myself moving up in the softball world. It wasn’t till my 2nd years in the NPF that I got over what everyone had to say about me and really started to understand that I could be a great hitter. Thats when I overcame my biggest obstacle. I decided to ask for help from my peers, I started to learn about hitting and how to create a great swing. I stopped listening to the negative and decided I had only one option…and that was to be better!

Still to this day, I am criticized…however I know that I have changed and I know that I have become the hitter I was always supposed to be.

Coach Margie Wright Interview – Produced By Gary Leland

This week I bring you an interview with Coach Margie Wright.

This week we are bringing you an interview with Fresno State Head softball Coach Margie Wright. In 2000 was she recorded the most wins in NCAA Division I history. She was in the first Olympics as a pitcher/catcher coach. She had the privilege of coaching softball and playing softball against some of the greats like Laura Berg, Dot Richardson, and many others. She attributes her success to the athletes she has coached.

Coach Wright first started playing fastpitch 10 years of age. She made the boys baseball team to begin with, then at the first game she was informed that girls were not allowed to play with the boys. She was crushed. So, her dad started a team so she could play.

Margie got into coaching in 1974. She was hired as a high school coach. There were no school teams even though Title IX had passed. She started and coached 5 sports and taught a full load. She realized that coaching was truly her passion. Then to Eastern Illinois to coach volleyball.

This week I bring you a great talk by Coach Patty Gasso from the FCA Breakfast.

This week we are bringing you Coach Patty Gasso’s speech from the FCA breakfast. Her amazingly inspirational speech on her involvement in the game of fastpitch softball begins with her story of looking to Dot Richardson as a role model. She used to play against Dot and loved her fire and passion for the game! Some younger players even mistakenly asked Patty Gasso for Dot Richardson’s autograph!

Patty then moves on to her coaching experiences with her fastpitch softball team a few years ago. She challenged five players, that she didn’t feel were motivated to play, with living the typical college life or the life of a committed college softball player. Only one of those 5 players stayed with her team. Coach Gasso was then put in a situation with a team of only 12 and she made it work with the help of God. She kept her faith and ended up with one of her most passionate and driven teams! The team stepped up in the most uncanny situations and went above and beyond to play the game that they all love, fastpitch softball.

Movement Pitches Part 3 – Bill Hillhouse – Produced By Gary Leland

This week I bring you the third and final part of Bill’s pitching clinic on Movement Pitches.

This week is the third and final part to the pitching clinic with coach Bill Hillhouse. Coach Hillhouse begins with answering for the fastpitch softball coaches in the audience. One coach asks how much is too much practice. Coach Hillhouse then explains that the amount of practice all depends on the player. The player has to want to practice and improve to be a better player.

Coach Hillhouse then explains to the softball coaching audience that only beginning with 3 basic pitches(Rise, Drop, and Change-Up) is the best start. Batters are taught to hit on a straight plane and trying to hit with a pitch that drops or rises is the most difficult to hit. Once the 3 basic pitches are mastered then the pitchers can work on moving those pitches side to side for a more variety of pitches to choose from.

For the coaches, Coach Hillhouse encourages them to try some of the drills and pitches themselves so that when the player has questions on how the pitch or drill should feel that coach will be able to relate to them and help them with adjusting.

Movement Pitches Part 2 – Bill Hillhouse – Produced By Gary Leland

This week I bring you part 2 of Bill Hillhouses clinic from Softball Con.

This week is part two of a pitching clinic with coach Bill Hillhouse. If you haven’t checked out part one of the clinic be sure to check it out! Coach Hillhouse begins this part of his clinic with explaining the difficulty of learning a rise ball. Many coaches teach different motions that a pitcher should take when giving different pitches. Coach Hillhouse explains that a pitcher should always have a constant pitching motion, but to adjust grip and release point by reference of the pitchers back leg.

All pitches (curve, screw, rise, drop, ect) with proper coaching, can have the exact same motions of a regular pitch with only few minor adjustments that Coach Hillhouse is an expert at explaining.

This drill is an effective way to gain strength for quick movements, speed, and endurance.

This drill will require a 2 foot high box that is sturdy enough for you to jump on

The catcher will stand behind the box and another player will stand 2 feet in front of the box with a ball.

The player will toss the ball high and directly above the box.

When the player releases the box the catcher explodes up to land on top of the box and catches the ball.

Make 10 jumps and then rotate.

This drill is an great way to ensure that when a drop third strike occurs in a game that the catcher know what to do and can execute the play efficiently.

Create a game like situation when the batter swings and the ball drops to the dirt first.

The batter will take off to first base and the catcher must find the ball and throw the ball to first base before the batter reaches the bag.

This drill is an effective way to encourage catchers to make their own observations and gain experience in calling pitches that will benefit the team.

The coach will give all of the catchers the task of observing a select few of their teammates when they are batting without them knowing.

At the end of practice the coach will take note of each of the catchers observations.

The catchers will then meet with the coach together and discuss what would be the best approach to dealing with the batters that were observed in a game situation.

Do this once a week and chance the batters to be observed each week.
