Even buying a simple box of cereal brings up an astounding array of questions:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Is it made with whole grains?&lt;br /&gt;How much sugar?&lt;br /&gt;Does it contain pesticides or genetically modified ingredients?&lt;br /&gt;How many carbs?&lt;br /&gt;Is there enough fiber?&lt;br /&gt;Are there artificial colors or flavors?&lt;br /&gt;How many calories in a serving … and how big is a serving?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It’s enough to make even the most sound-minded person want to throw in the towel all together when it comes to food shopping and instead eat only brown rice and organic greens. That, or sit down with a big bag of everything on the junk-food “no-no” list and pig out thoroughly.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;“Food” Does Not Have to be a Four-Letter Word&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It goes without saying that many people have an &lt;strong&gt;unhealthy relationship with food.&lt;/strong&gt; We’re so worried about gaining weight or eating something “bad” that even when we do eat something good, we feel guilty about it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So the first step to feeling good about food is letting go of your negative attachments to it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The best way to have a healthy relationship with food is to release your attachments and aversions to food and set a goal of eating to live rather than living to eat.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This includes letting go of the emotional drivers that lead many of us to eat what we shouldn’t.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;"Gluttony is an emotional escape, a sign something is eating us,” said American novelist Peter De Vries.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And this could not be more true.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Many of us use food to medicate or distract ourselves from our problems&lt;/strong&gt; as opposed to simply eating when we are hungry and allowing ourselves to enjoy whatever we do eat.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;So the next time you find yourself reaching for a pint of ice cream when you’re stressed, first let go of the feelings of stress, the need for the ice cream, and the guilt you may already be feeling for wanting to eat it.&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;It is very helpful to release any guilt about food&lt;/strong&gt;. When you are on a diet, for instance, and you eat something that you believe you should not have eaten you feel guilty. Since guilt is an IOU for punishment you often punish yourself by eating more and simply feel worse -- then punish yourself even more until you spiral out of control.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The bottom line is that feeling bad about food will cause you to make unhealthy decisions. To make healthy food decisions, you just need to reverse that and instead feel good about food.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;By letting go of the guilt you break this cycle with food and eat much more sensibly&lt;/strong&gt;. For some, employee wellness initiatives - and the goal of a healthier workforce - are their last, best hope to rein in ever-increasing employee health benefit costs.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A survey of National Association of Manufacturers and ERISA Industry Council members found that 71 percent of the member companies offered employee incentives this year for participating in health and wellness or disease management programs. That was up from 62 percent of their memberships in 2007.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;According to Hewitt Associates, 88 percent of companies it surveyed this year "plan to make investments in longer-term solutions aimed at improving the health and productivity of their workforce over the next three to five years, up from 63 percent last year."&lt;br /&gt;Fit workers are a worthy goal in itself. But the increase in corporate wellness programs is driven by the bottom-line.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The American Journal of Preventive Medicine estimates a return of from $3 to $6 in health care cost savings for every $1 invested in a corporate-based wellness program over a two- to five-year period.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So far, only about one-fourth of companies that have implemented employee wellness incentive programs have said in recent surveys that they've been able to track and document specific cost savings, but those who have are happy with the bottom line.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Health2Resources this year found that eight out of 10 employers who calculated their returns on investment in 2007 "more than broke even" with their wellness programs.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The manufacturers' association survey found that the average incentive value (such as health insurance premium cost reductions or gift cards for employees who participate in wellness programs) was just under $200 per participating employee.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;HBS spends about $800 a year per employee on its wellness initiative, which includes a bit more than the JCC memberships, Sigman said.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mason, the HBS employee, signed up for the Jewish Community Center's wellness program in February. She began working out under professional supervision, and now can walk up a flight of stairs without wheezing, something she couldn't do before.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"As America's battle of the bulge continues and other health concerns grab headlines, it's no longer a secret that obesity, tobacco use and stress are the most common hazards to health in the American workforce," said Jack Bastable, health and productivity management national practice leader at CBIZ Benefits and Insurance, based in Leawood.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Since the 1980s, Bastable has been one of the Kansas City area's pioneers in spreading the corporate wellness gospel. Currently, he works closely with John Mullin, health enhancement department chairman for St. Luke's Health System, which has contracts with 22 major Kansas City area companies, law firms, school districts and municipalities to provide wellness counseling and programs.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"Coast to coast, wellness programs are growing exponentially," Mullin said.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;He and Bastable espouse a corporate culture that goes "beyond water bottles and T-shirts," Mullin said. "We work for a corporate culture that's more allied with well visits to physicians, exercise habits, thinking prudently about diet, and managing disease. Employees who participate will be rewarded in discounts in their premium costs or deposits into health savings accounts."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Such employer-sponsored wellness initiatives get resistance from some workers who don't want their bosses to have a role in supervising their personal health or fitness.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the recent Hewitt survey, only 12 percent of employees said they thought their companies had a role in helping them understand how to stay healthy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Employers who have wellness programs also need to be careful not to violate nondiscrimination provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. Simply put, health information obtained in wellness programs shouldn't be shared with employees' supervisors or co-workers.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The federal government also does not sanction wellness programs that fail a "reasonable" test. In other words, the rewards or incentives (such as reduced health insurance premium costs) can't require meeting a fitness or participation standard that would be considered unreasonable.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Navigating through the privacy concerns and legalities hasn't deterred a growing number of companies.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One corporate approach to wellness steamed through the summer at the Epiq Systems Inc. headquarters in Kansas City, Kan. Fitness trainer Greg Justice, owner of AYC Health/Fitness, designed a 12-week fitness "boot camp," given onsite at Epiq. Twenty-five employees, or about one-fourth of the headquarters' staff, signed up.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"Doing it onsite creates a much greater adherence rate than if employees have to go offsite," Justice said. "Epiq has a state-of-the-art gym onsite, so that made it easy."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Epiq covered the $249-per-person cost, as long as the employee showed some fitness or weight-loss improvement at the end of the session, Justice said. Enough positive outcomes were recorded to spark the beginning of a fall boot camp at Epiq, which, like the first, takes place over the lunch hour.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Because some Epiq workers travel, the fitness program included an online component to help them keep up with suggested exercise and diet programs.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Lockton Benefit Co. contracted with Front Door Fitness, another Kansas City fitness company, to subsidize the cost of onsite personal training for employees.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the year since Lockton began the program, more than three-fourths of Lockton employees have participated in at least one part of the fitness package, which has ranged from motivational fitness presentations to one-on-one counseling and training.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At law firm Shook, Hardy &amp;amp; Bacon, chairman John Murphy said about 500 lawyers and other employees are participating in the "A Healthier You" program sponsored by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The firm is discounting the cost of health insurance premiums for employees who participate in the wellness program, which offers health screenings, a health risk appraisal and connects employees with health coaches.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"It's really raised awareness that they can change behaviors to improve their health," Murphy said, noting that the benefits go beyond lower health care costs: Employees seem more productive.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Kansas City-based Polsinelli, Shalton, Flanigan, Suelthaus, a 550-employee law firm, began a wellness program in March 2007, supervised by St. Luke's. The incentive for employees to participate is a discount on their monthly insurance premium if they complete their target program recommended after their health risk appraisals.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Like many wellness programs, individuals can be asked to focus on losing weight, lowering cholesterol, stopping smoking or getting health screenings such as mammograms, bone density tests, fecal occult blood sampling, vision or skin cancer screenings.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A wellness effort doesn't have to be intensive or invasive. At Creative Consumer Concepts in Overland Park, Kan., the company this summer handed out pedometers to encourage employees to track their steps over a six-week period.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To round out the program, the company treated participants to a visit from a massage therapist and supplied nutritional snacks.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Wellness advocates note, though, that even baby steps toward employment-based wellness can be rejected by some employees who either aren't motivated or don't want to entwine personal health concerns with their employment.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A Hewitt survey of employees who had taken health risk questionnaires offered by their employers found that only 40 percent had taken any actions based on specific recommendations.&lt;br /&gt;OF NOTE&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;- Research by Hewitt Associates finds that 51 percent of employees or their dependents have a chronic health condition that requires ongoing care. The Kempner diet or Rice Diet has been used since 1939 in treating, often with dramatic results, more than 18,000 patients from around the world suffering from diabetes, obesity, heart disease and hypertension.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Rice Diet Program&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Rice Diet is not like fad diets which come and go, but has developed into a complete, proven and well-respected program for improving health. As well as meals using the Rice Diet, the program provides classes, groups and workshops for stress management and exercise, nutritional lectures, and personal medical supervision.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Menu Plans&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;Participants in the program have a limited menu selection initially, then choose from a range of items comprising fresh fruits and vegetables, grains, fish, and legumes (beans), varied daily. Most people’s diet contains approx. 4-7 grams of sodium, yet less than half a gram a day is necessary for normal body function.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Salt is a problem for patients with high blood pressure and kidney failure, and this is true also for most people if present in higher quantities in the diet. Zelman, MPH, RD, LD&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;The Rice Diet Solution: What It Is&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The &lt;strong&gt;Rice Diet Solution is an extremely rigid approach to reverse disease and cause weight loss.&lt;/strong&gt; The detailed food plan severely limits salt, sugar, fat, and processed foods and causes rapid weight loss. Dieters are promised fast weight loss of 20-30 pounds the first week followed by 2.5-3.5 pounds per week in the later phases. Add the recommended exercise and you can lose even more weight.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;The Rice Diet Solution&lt;/strong&gt; is based on the 1939 Rice Diet Program, where dieters checked into facilities in Durham, N.C., for an intensive two to four week boot camp focused on treating obesity, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and kidney disease.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Due to the continued success of that expensive in-house program, co-authors, Kitty Rosati, MS, RD, LDN, a registered dietitian; and her cardiologist husband, Robert Rosati, MD, wrote The Rice Diet Solution to guide those wanting to try the diet at home.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;The Rice Diet Solution: How It Works&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;The Rice Diet Solution starts with 800 calories then gradually increases to the final, maintenance phase that allows 1,200 calories per day for the rest of your life. &lt;strong&gt;Experts warn that very low calorie diets less than 1,200 calories daily should be followed with medical supervision.&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Clients who go through the North Carolina program lower blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, and successfully lose weight&lt;/strong&gt;. "When they come off fried foods, coffee, processed foods, and sugar and shift to more natural foods, their bodies feel better, migraines go away, symptoms for fibromyalgia disappear, and they no longer crave unhealthy foods," says Rosati.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Originally, the low-sodium diet plan was developed for patients with kidney disease to help lower blood pressure. &lt;strong&gt;Today, the severe sodium restriction works to trigger water loss.&lt;/strong&gt; "The average American consumes 7,000 milligrams of sodium a day and when we reduce that to 50 milligrams in the detox phase one, they lose water and within 48 hours they lose their appetite," Rosati says.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Amy Jamieson-Petonic, spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association, with years of weight loss counseling experience, disagrees. "You can't blame salt for your appetite; there are so many factors that impact appetite including a huge psychological component that goes beyond salt."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;The Rice Diet Solution only allows an average of 16 to 20 grams of protein daily, which is much lower than the Dietary Reference Intake recommendation of 46 to 56 grams per day&lt;/strong&gt;. Rosati dismisses the national recommendation and suggests studies exist to support a lower protein intake.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;NOTE: The diet is not recommended for anyone who has had a colon resection or impaired kidney function.&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;The Rice Diet Solution: What You Can Eat&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ricers, the affectionate term for those following the Rice Diet Solution, eat more than just rice -- but not much. Though rice is part of the plan, it is one of 30 foods available at any given meal.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The plan allows for whole-grain starches, low-sodium beans, fruits, vegetables, nonfat dairy and very lean protein sources. "Eating a diet high in fiber from whole grains, fruits, and vegetables will keep you feeling full and satisfied," says co-author Kitty Rosati.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Rice Diet Solution plan has several phases:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Phase 1 -- one week &lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1 day: Basic Rice Diet (800 calories and 50 mg sodium)&lt;br /&gt;2 starches and 2 fruits at breakfast, lunch, and dinner&lt;br /&gt;6 days: Lacto Vegetarian Rice Diet (1,000 calories a day and 300 mg sodium)&lt;br /&gt;Breakfast: 1 starch, 1 fruit, 1 nonfat dairy&lt;br /&gt;Lunch and dinner: 3 starches, 3 vegetables, 1 fruit&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Phase 2 -- one week&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1 day: Basic Rice Diet&lt;br /&gt;5 days: Lacto Vegetarian Rice Diet&lt;br /&gt;1 day: Vegetarian Plus Rice Diet (1,200 calories per day and 500 mg sodium)&lt;br /&gt;Breakfast: 2 starches, 1 fruit&lt;br /&gt;Lunch: 3 starches, 3 vegetables, 1 fruit&lt;br /&gt;Dinner: 3 starches, 3 protein (or 2 dairy), 3 vegetables, 1 fruit&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Phase 3 -- Maintenance. Same as phase 2, adding about 200 more calories per week, until you stop losing weight.&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1 day: Basic Rice Diet&lt;br /&gt;4 days: Lacto Vegetarian Rice Diet&lt;br /&gt;2 days: Vegetarian Plus Rice Diet&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The authors of The Rice Diet Solution note the diet is too low in calcium and vitamin D and suggest a once-daily multivitamin.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;The Rice Diet Solution: What the Experts Say&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;The Rice Diet Solution works best in a controlled environment&lt;/strong&gt;, like the Durham clinic, with support services, medical supervision, and a boot camp mentality. When it comes to doing it at home, it may prove difficult. Additionally, many of the diet's recommended products are not widely available and require special orders.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The diet "has some good components including exercise, stress reduction, lifestyle changes, and an emphasis on whole foods," says registered dietitian Jamieson-Petonic. "&lt;strong&gt;What concerns me is when you eat less than 1,200 calories per day, your body thinks it is starving and responds by lowering basal metabolism, which could set up the undesirable yo-yo syndrome."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Which means such an inflexible and low-calorie diet is hard to sustain, could trigger binging, and has the potential for nutritional deficiencies. It's also a challenge when you eat out or attend social events.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Additionally,&lt;strong&gt; experts warn that low- may lead to the loss of muscle mass.&lt;/strong&gt; "Lean and low-fat protein is important in everyone's diet," says Jamieson-Petonic, "especially if you are trying to lose weight, because it maintains muscle mass and keeps you feeling full longer than other nutrients."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Some experts would like to see outcome studies on the rapid weight loss documenting the long-term effectiveness of the Rice Diet Solution. "The 20 to 30 pound weight loss includes fluids, which do not offer the same health benefits as does losing the same amount of fat," says Jamieson-Petonic. She also believes that the fasting phase of the plan could result in side effects and advises consulting your medical doctor before starting the plan.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;The Rice Diet Solution: Food for Thought&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;The Rice Diet Solution will cause weight loss due to its very low calorie content, but it may also take away some of the pleasure of eating, with its rules and limited food choices.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Inflexible, strict diets tend to be short-term fixes because dieters grow weary of the rules and cannot sustain the program for a lifetime. And with such diets it's questionable whether lost weight will be kept off when the likelihood is that the dieter will return to old eating habits.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;The Rice Diet Solution may be a good kick-start to a healthier lifestyle but probably is too difficult to sustain long-term. Zelman, MPH, RD, LD&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Surprisingly surviving the test of time, &lt;strong&gt;the 3 Day Diet is another fad diet&lt;/strong&gt;, dating back to 1985. Copies of the "3 Day Diet" continue to float around cyberspace, promising quick weight loss, cleansing, lower cholesterol, and increased energy. However, no diet book exists to substantiate the science behind the "unique metabolic reaction."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Often mistakenly called The Cleveland Clinic Diet, the 3 Day Diet is a regimented plan that must be followed exactly for three days at a time, followed by normal eating for four or five days before opting to resume the plan again.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Followers of the 3 Day Diet are promised up to a 10 pound weight loss in three days&lt;/strong&gt;, although realistically, most of that weight is likely due to fluid loss and not the more desirable fat loss. &lt;strong&gt;To achieve the proposed loss, exercise is not mentioned in the plan.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;What You Can Eat&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;The 3 Day Diet is a very specific food plan that must be followed precisely. Portions must be eaten exactly as specified and dieters are warned not to overeat -- otherwise the promised 10 pound weight loss may not be achieved. Likewise, dieters should not under-eat, even if they are not hungry. The purpose of returning to your usual eating style is to keep your metabolism from slowing, reverting to fat-storing, starvation mode.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;What the Experts Say&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;Make no mistake: the 3 Day Diet is not associated with the prestigious Cleveland Clinic. "There is no such thing as a Cleveland Clinic diet," says Cindy Moore, director of nutrition therapy at The Cleveland Clinic. "It is an urban legend that is not nutritionally sound, and the only reason it causes weight loss is because it is so low in calories, not because of any food combinations or metabolic reactions."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Following a plan with fewer than 1,000 calories a day concerns Moore. "The plan yields about 1,000 calories a day which has the ability to lower metabolism so when you revert back to normal eating, you regain weight even quicker."&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Moore adds that the diet "sets up a vicious cycle of being hungry during the restrictive three days and most likely overeating on the off days."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And the diet is so monotonous, dieters gladly return to their old eating habits. "What good is it to go back to the old habits that caused the weight gain, without resolving weight issues?" asks Moore. "Hands down, the 3 Day Diet is not conducive to changing habits or encouraging a healthier lifestyle, which are fundamental to weight control," she says.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Because the 3 Day Diet is so low in carbohydrates, it's likely the initial weight loss is primarily water weight, as carbohydrate encourages your body to retain water&lt;/strong&gt;. As soon as the dieter goes back to consuming a normal amount of carbohydrate, the water weight comes back.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Food for Thought&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Experts worry that when dieters can't follow restrictive plans like the 3 Day Diet, they blame themselves and think they've failed.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;But "fad diets are not sustainable for any period of time, and it is the reason so many people throw in the towel, feeling frustrated that diets don't work, when in reality it is the diet, not the dieter," Moore says.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Weight loss is possible on the 3 Day Diet, but only because it is very low in calories&lt;/strong&gt;. Going back to so-called normal eating does little to promote a healthier lifestyle, instead the pattern promotes undesirable yo-yo dieting or an on-again off-again approach to weight management that is not successful long term.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Bottom line: keep looking for a well-balanced weight loss plan that controls calories every day, includes exercise, and allows a wide variety of healthy foods. The data they collected not only helped them to learn more about which diet programs tend to be more successful in terms of total weight loss but also which diet programs more individuals were more likely to stick with for long term weight loss and maintenance.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;While the study participants were allowed to choose their favorite diet plan, most participants opted for one of the following: &lt;strong&gt;Atkins, Weight Loss, Ornish and the Zone&lt;/strong&gt;. Even though initial data was conducted after just two months, researchers continued to study the remaining participants. They discovered that after a period of time more than half of those participants who opted for diet plans that focused on low carbs and high fat, such as the Atkins plan, dropped out. Additionally, approximately the same percentage of individuals who chose the Ornish plan, which focuses on low fat and high carb vegetarian foods, also quit their diets. Weight Watchers participants fared moderately better, with about two-thirds of that groups participants sticking with it. The Zone participants showed similar results.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;So, which diet plans performed best overall in terms of total weight loss? Surprisingly, they all performed about the same.&lt;/strong&gt; Those individuals participating in the Ornish plan who were able to stick with their diet for the entire year achieved a weight loss rate of about 6%; the highest of all groups. Atkins came in at about 4%, with Weight Watchers and the Zone performing at an average of 5% weight loss. Health risk factors related to obesity were an entirely different matter; however. In terms of heart disease risk, Weight Watchers participants decreased their risk by 15%, while other diet plans hovered in the 12% range. The Ornish diet plan participants, who showed a higher overall weight loss, showed a lower decrease in risk of heart disease, at just 7%.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Overall; however, researchers concluded that in the end, there is no one magic diet.
