I’ve been silent for some time now, and this may have something to do with what seems like the constant battle to lose weight. I was determined about one year ago that I was going to lose 25 lbs. I started out my journey, the same as every other time in the past - this should have been my first indication that failure was just around the corner. When I start, I’m very excited, eager to see the results and know that I’m going to feel so much better while eating right and when I take the weight off. But, I think my problem is starting. It was like a light bulb going off over my head - an epiphany, so to speak. It never really occurred to me before that I shouldn’t be “starting”. In my head I’m either “eating right” or not. I shouldn’t be starting to eat right, then eating right for a period of time, then after a deviation - stop eating right until I start again. But, it’s that one slip, one deviation that seems to give me an excuse to just STOP all together. It’s this mindset that is wrong and destructive. I need to wrap my head around this and move on.

This came to mind as I find myself playing the game Spider Solitaire incessantly. My son introduced me to the game recently and I have not stopped playing the game since. It has even caused me to stop doing my work and I had considered myself a workaholic. All of this got me to thinking - do most overweight people have addictive personalities?

It makes sense to me as I think more about this. I believe that food is a type of addiction as are many other things, so perhaps many overweight people also have an addictive personality. If this is true, then could it be treated in the same fasion as any other compulsive disorder?

I’d reflect more on this, but I have a game of Spider Solitaire calling my name.

Last weekend, we all decided to go out to the movies. We didn’t know what was playing at what time, so we were taking a chance on what would be available to see. Now the boys wanted to see the new X-men movie. Fortunately for them, it was playing about every 10 minutes. So they got to see the movie they wanted to see. I was with my daughter, who is 13 and I don’t let her see R rated movies yet, so that limited our choices even more. I wanted to see “The Soloist” or “Taken”, but neither was playing at the right time. We were left with a choice of “Hannah Montana”, which was a definite NO; or “Knowing”. I thought it couldn’t be too bad because I’ve enjoyed many films starring Nicholas Cage. In fact, I loved him in “Leaving Las Vegas” - excellent movie, if you ever get the chance.

Knowing, has to be one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. It was absolutely ridiculous. There were religious signs and symbols throughout the movie. There were so other things that made no sense at all. My daughter and I kept asking each other during the movie if the other wanted to leave. Unfortunately we stuck it out. The ending was just bad. It’s like they couldn’t figure out how to end this horrific movie and picked something out of a hat.

It was just awful.

I think the economy has had a lot to do with our difficulties. We’ve been extremely busy trying to build our business or at least retain the bulk of the clients that we currently serve. All of this has had a negative effect on my desire to eat healthy foods. But I have not given up, I’ve just not done as well as I would have liked. All-in-all I’ve lost 9.6 pounds.

I’m still doing weight watchers and I still believe this is the best weight loss program for me. I do the online program, which lets me easily track the food (and points) that I eat each day. It reminds me to drink water, take my vitamins and also tracks the exercise I do each day.

I have incorporated a daily exercise regiment that works well for me too. Every other day I do about an hours worth of exercise on a “Wave” machine in 15 minutes. On those days I also do 1 mile of Power Walking with Leslie Sansone. The days that I’m not doing the Wave and 1 mile of walking, I do 30 minutes or 2 miles with Leslie Sansone.

For now - it’s working well for me considering the additional stress I’ve had in 2009.

I’m at the tail end of the Baby Boomers, so I’m starting to feel my age. At first it felt like a gradual process, but now I’m rapidly feeling the effects of my years. I bring this up because I recently stumbled upon a site offering information on bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. I found the information very intriguing and I could definitely relate to what was being reported.

Like many of my peers and colleagues, I am under a great deal of stress and my doctor told me that this is the cause of early menopausal symptoms. I’ve heard both good things and bad things about hormone therapy and because of family history – I’m a little skeptical. But, that’s why I became interested in this hormone replacement therapy because it uses natural hormones instead of synthetic hormones. This appears to be a holistic approach, which includes proper fitness and nutrition and hormone therapy.

It never occurred to me to be proactive as I age. The more information I gather, the more it makes sense to start with therapy. I am trying to take care of myself with diet and exercise – I should also be concerned about hormone imbalance – especially at my age.

I remember the days/weeks when I would drop 6+ pounds each week (especially in the beginning of the diet). I would get discouraged if I only lost 1 or 2 pounds. But not any more. I’m so happy to lose a couple ounces!

I’m so delighted with the Weight Watchers points program. It’s doable and I’m doing it. I’m fairly strict with the program during the week and I tend to “loosen up” on the weekends. We tend to go out to eat more often on the weekends and it’s more difficult to both - stick to the plan and accurately track the points I’m consuming.

Since I started the Flex program about five weeks ago - I’ve lost 9 pounds. And I’m sooooo happy with the progress because I know I can do this.

I really don’t know why some people seem to be more successful at losing weight, but I have an idea as to why I’ve failed on a number of weight loss programs. I don’t think it was necessarily the specific program that was at fault - I know it was me. There are a few programs that I tried in the past that were so restrictive that I did feel as if I was set up to fail, but for the most part - the diets work fine - I don’t.

Anyone who’s familiar with trying to lose weight or dieting knows that there will be slips during the course of the program. This has been my downfall on every single attempt I’ve made at loosing weight. I believe this goes back to the psychology of weight loss. Sometimes it’s too hard to get past a simple mistake. But, it is worth the effort to push through and not give up!

Currently I’m successfully doing the Weight Watchers Flex program. Last Thursday I was hungry ALL DAY LONG. No idea why, but I was. I used up all my 22 alloted points for the day; then went through the extra 7 optional points for the day and I even dipped in to the 35 extra weekly points that can be used. Then Friday came around and I felt defeated with the program and that gave me the excuse to NOT follow the plan that day and this attitude continued through the weekend.

Normally, this would have been the end of the diet for me. I would have felt like a failure and continued with my bad, unhealthy eating habits until I got myself motivated to start yet another weight loss program. But, this time I decided to stop feeling sorry for myself and get back on the horse and JUST DO IT. And I did.

The four days of not following the Weight Watchers program did cause me to gain 0.2 lbs - which could have been another cause to give in to my urges to eat ANYTHING & EVERYTHING I want instead of what is good for me, my mind and body. But I pushed through and made it. I’ve now lost another 2.2 lbs and I feel successful again.

I know there will be many more challenges ahead of me in my path to reach my desired weight. Hopefully I have learned from this lesson to NOT GIVE UP.

Due to the rise of obesity in today’s society everyone is trying to achieve quick weight loss. This is dangerous, and can lead to developing binge eating disorder. Eating disorders are psychiatric issues in one’s eating habits. Tabloids display the secret eating disorders of celebrities and music artists. Yet the news never discuss how dangerous these eating disorders really are, and how common they are.

Most quick weight loss techniques require extreme unrealistic diets. Obviously these diets never keep the weight off. Even if a diet works, often the pounds lost are gained back slowly simply because no one can stay on a diet forever. The problem with quick weight loss attempts is that they often require you to avoid junk foods and fast foods. This often leads to binge eating.

Binge eating is eating very large amounts of food in a small period of time. Binge eating isn’t related to hunger most of the time. Often it’s consuming food beyond the point of satisfying one’s physical hunger. Binge eaters often eat huge amounts of food even when they aren’t really hungry. Binge eating often leads to feelings of guilt or sadness because of the future weight gain it will lead to.

Following the popular advice of diets that recommend avoiding junk foods and fast foods is dangerous. When one avoids such foods, one starts craving them more and more. These carvings get out of control and often lead to binge eating. For example if someone has been avoiding pizza, and then decide to have a slice, they’ll often end up eating a few more slices and lose control.

It’s important to note that binge eating is different from bulimia. Bulimia often involves overeating which is followed by self-induced vomiting, or fasting. Binge eating is one of the leading causes of obesity today. Obesity is very dangerous for one’s health, yet often it’s very tough to treat.

Often obese individuals eat for comfort, and end up developing food addictions. These addictions can also be a form of emotional eating. Emotional eating is basically when one eats not to satisfy physical hunger but rather to deal with tough or negative emotions. Stress eating is a good example where one will consume larger quantities of food on a stressful day.

Binge eating is often kept a secret. A food addict will usually overeat in private to avoid others finding out about their disorderly eating habits. This is why binge eating is very challenging to treat because sufferers keep it a secret. Many will overeat until becoming obese and then will eventually become desperate and seek help.

Therapy is the most common treatment for binge eating. There are also recovery clinics that a binge eater can check into. Also there are many books on the topic where the authors share their own recovery efforts, what worked and what didn’t. There are also support groups such as overeaters anonymous and eating disorder support forums online.

Next time you are considering quick weight loss, think again. Trying to lose weight quickly is unnatural and dangerous. Also being obsessed with your body shape can lead to developing eating disorders. It’s best to lose weight naturally through exercise, and gradually implementing healthier eating habits.

I know the ultimate goal is to change my eating habits so I will permanently make good food choices. But why does it always feel like I’m dieting. I guess in my head I’m still thinking that when I see that magic number on the scale - it’s over. I’m done.

I also know that if I do that - I’ll be back to “dieting” and as they say - DIETS DON’T WORK!

Is it just a matter of time and repetition until eating healthy becomes a way of life? No just a time to get through.

I do believe that I will always struggle with food - it’s part of who I am. But I’m looking forward to the day - if or when it comes - to want to eat foods that are good for me, instead of just good!
