I have been kicking around the idea of ditching my mail client ever since Sparrow was bought out by Google. I discovered PostBox which worked great for a while but seemed to be bloated and slow after using it for a while. I then came across AirMail which is a great replacement for Sparrow but recent updates seemed to have slowed it down, and also based on some of the open discussion about where its going it sounds like it also is going to get bloated and eventually be a slow client. Maybe once things are a little more set in stone and its not so Beta I might have to look at it again.

So after much debating I took the plunge, I consolidated all of my mail accounts into one account within GMail. Its only been two days so far using GMail via the browser and it hasn’t been too bad…

In order to get GMail to be part of my normal work flow I had to make some changes to my system. First I made so that all mailto: links on pages in Chrome will now open GMail instead of the mail client. In order to do this simply load up GMail and then paste the following line of code into the address bar and hit enter

javascript:navigator.registerProtocolHandler("mailto","https://mail.google.com/mail/?extsrc=mailto&url=%s","Gmail");

I also installed the Attachments.me Chrome extension so that I can continue to use Dropbox for email attachments, as well as allowing me to save attachments directly to my Dropbox when needed. Interested to see how long I can last with out an email client, I am sure future updates will follow.

I recently upgraded my home server with a HighPoint RocketRAID 2640×1 PCI-Express RAID Controller Card. I had the option of software RAID but I figured that I might as well go hardware since the price really wasnt that bad and in case of a software issue the RAID Array should keep working upon a system reinstall.

Unfortunaly the required module for the card is not built into the kernel or available as a packge for Ubuntu 12.10 so I had to compile it manually to get it working.

Outlined below are the steps that I took to get it working on my system, results may vary but this works great and is using an updated version of module (most other info I found was for version 1.2 this is 1.5)

First I wanted to make sure that the operating system was fully updated

apt-get update
apt-get upgrade

After I made sure it was all set to go I needed to install the additional packages to make sure that I was able to get the module to complile. As an extra precation I did a build-dep to make sure everything was there, probably not required … but its a step I took in the process either way.

sudo apt-get install -y build-essential checkinstall linux-source linux-headers-generic build-essential mlocate screen vnstat linux-source linux-headers-generic build-essential mlocate screen vnstat ubuntu-dev-tools ubuntu-dev-tools dkms
sudo apt-get build-dep -y linux-source linux-headers-generic build-essential mlocate screen vnstat linux-source linux-headers-generic build-essential mlocate screen vnstat ubuntu-dev-tools ubuntu-dev-tools dkms

After everything was updated, and installed I did a reboot just to make sure nothing borked the system and was going to prevent it from booting once the module was compiled.

Now that you are back up and running you need to get the source files and get to work. I store all my source files in /root/src/

cd /root/src/
wget http://highpoint-tech.com/BIOS_Driver/rr26xx/2640X1-2640X4-2642/Linux/RR264x-Linux-Src-v1.5-120817-1641.tar.gz

After opening gifts from her (Due to stupid shipping options hers were not here on time :/) we ended up having a great dinner at Due Forni located in the Summerlin area here in Vegas. If you are in the area and have not gone, you shoot. They have some really good brick oven pizza, and a pretty large wine selection all at a pretty decent price. We also had their Polipo for an appetizer which is braised mediterranean octopus in a salad of sorts, it was amazing and we couldn’t get enough of it.
To top off the night we of coursed ended up at Buffalo Wild Wings for a drink (Really this is just out of connivence being located directly across the street from our condo.). We made our way home and decided what better Valentines day movie could be watched besides Mama of course. We sat through the movie wondering why it looked so scary on the previews but left us falling asleep and bored. We have come to the conclusion that scary movies are just not as good as they used to be.
That concluded our Valentines day, each one seems better than the last. I am looking forward to many, many more wonderful holidays with Kat as each one always seems better than the last one that we shared together.

With my contact tweaking and screwing with Fauxzen I decided to enable Swiftype. It just went active on the site today and so far it has been flawless and the indexing from the blog to their site was fast and flawless.
Don’t get me wrong the standard built in WordPress search seems to work great on a daily basis, but Swiftype offers some really cool features that just aren’t there or well in actuality probably needed for a normal users WordPress install.
They outline some key features on their site like Drag and Drop ranking for one. The Drag and Drop ranking this will let you order the way search results are found. This could be really handy if you have paid posts/ads on your site and you want to channel traffic to post X instead of Y when people are searching for W.
They also offer realtime analytics of searches, this again can really help you tune your site to provide more relevant information, as well as helping you see what kind of things interest your site visitors when they come to your site. The one that really sold me which while simple and not all that amazing was the auto-complete feature, the little bit of eye candy is really nice and may help people find other entries that the normal search might not have yielded.
Installing Swiftype was a walk in the park, they provide a nice WordPress plugin that you install and plug in your API key that you get from your account on their site. Once you have done that there is a simple button to click to have their crawler index all the pages on your site. Thats it, no extensive configurations that end up taking the better part of the day to setup.
Overall it has been less than a day so far using Swiftype but I think I might keep it around for a while. I am very interested to see how much their pricing ends up being once out of public beta as that will more than likely be the determining factor for me if I end up keeping it installed or now. So go ahead and go give it a try.

Well looking back I have been pretty bad about posting, always stating I will be posting on a regular basis…. never seems to happen. Anyways its a new year and I am going to try to make the same promise again. I have been wanting to post on a more frequent basis these days, but for some reason I never find the time to actually site and do so. I mildly blame Reddit and Imgur for this as they seem to occupy more and more of my free time.

Anyways I have slowly been addressing some issues on my site, removing plugins, adjust themes the whole 9 yards. I was initially working on a custom theme, but really who has the time to sit down and do that. The other day I went out and purchased a copy of the Standard theme which I am currently running. Overall it seems to have sped up the site quite a bit (though this could also be due tot he fact I have removed a ton of plugins, and cleaned up the database too). Its a pretty nice theme and looks like something that I will be able to build off of as time allows.

Well anyways happy late new years to everyone and really I hope to be posting a bit more frequent this year…

I was recently looking into editing an installed extension but was not seeing any easy way to do so from within Chrome. After a bit of searching I came across the directory where Chrome stores its extensions.

/Users/YOURUSERNAME/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Default/Extensions/

Once you have opened up this folder you will see a whole slew of directories that make little to no sense.

In order to figure out which directory contains the extension you are looking for you need to enable developer mode in Chrome’s extension manager.

Once enabled you will see the ID for each extension which is the actual directory name. Now that you have that you can navigate to the appropriate directory and edit the extension to your liking.

Over the past 6 months or so I have been looking for a replacement laptop bag for my Macbook. I have been the most picky shopper when it has come to choosing a new one. While my last one was a great bag, the strap on it was just sub par and eventually ended up feeling like it was trying to saw through my shoulder when I was walking around with it. I initially tried to find a replacement strap, but surprisingly coming across once that was better than the current, and matched it somewhat ended up being near impossible.
With the issues on finding a new strap I was left to look for an entire replacement for the bag … what a hassle this has been (I think it goes back to my requirements for a new bag). The main thing I have been looking for is something minimal while still being somewhat functional. I was also looking for find a small form factor bag as I didn’t want to feel like I was toting around a duffle bag for my 13in laptop. I came across quite a few nice bags, but they always seemed to be made for a 15in+ laptop, which would lead to a decent amount of extra space that I was trying to avoid. The other day while looking around once again I ended up coming across the Manhattan Portage 13-Inch Deluxe Computer Bag. It looks like I had found a winner. I read a few reviews and looked over the dimensions of the bag and it looked pretty slick. It had enough room to hold my 13in Macbook Pro, iPad, charger and a few other cables, while still looking minimal. I have an upcoming trip here where I will really be able to test it and give a follow up review.

Because of this I have been looking for ways to spend less time when doing so, since I type the same thing over and over, I initially tried TextExpander which worked great for testing but just seemed like it was missing something. Yesterday I came across DashExpander, within a matter of minutes I knew this was better and I instantly made the switch.
DashExpander has quite a few perks, first off its a lot cheaper than TextExpander … at least right now it is (They are running a sale if you decide to purchase). As you would expect it comes with what seem to be the standard set of features which I am not going to get into since if you are looking at this type of software you already have an idea of what it does and how it does it. The first feature that I will mention is the ability auto insert information that is currently in your clipboard right into the macro. Giving the user the ability to do this saves a few keystrokes if you have macros that require you to paste some details into them. The other really neat feature is the ability to add variables to the macros, this is really cool as it pops up a heads up display that lets you fill in the blanks before the macro is inserted. I am still playing with DashExpander and think that it was a great purchase given the two features I mentioned.
