Joy, Phish's eleventh studio album, and first in five years is available for pre-order now at Phish Dry Goods and will hit stores September 8th. Joy is available on CD, and also as part of the Joy Box, a Limited Edition deluxe version. We're also pressing the album on 180g Vinyl, for people who understand what that means.

Joy was recorded in April and May of 2009 at Chung King Studio in New York City and was produced by Steve Lillywhite. The CD features ten new tracks including Stealing Time From The Faulty Plan, Kill Devil Falls, Ocelot and Joy.

In addition to the Joy CD, Phish is offering an exclusive Joy Box, which is available only at Phish Dry Goods. The super deluxe "Joy Box" includes:

Joy, the album
A complete second album entitled Party Time
An extensive hard-bound booklet
Ten individual Limited Edition posters (designed by a different
artist for each of the album's ten songs)

The Joy Box will be available in early October, but you can pre-order today. Since this box will not ship until after the album's release date, everyone who pre-orders the Joy Box will receive a free MP3 download of the entire album (10 tracks) on the September 8th release date. This box will ship on a first order, first ship basis, meaning the boxes will ship in the same order in which orders are received.

In addition, Joy will be pressed on vinyl (two 180 gram discs, packaged in a beautiful gatefold sleeve to keep your discs warm). The vinyl release date is set for September 29th and you can reserve your copy today. FESTIVAL 8 TICKETS ON SALE NOW

Festival 8, a three-day Phish festival will take place on October 30th, 31st and November 1st at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California. With lush green fields and palm trees, and surrounded by vistas of California's majestic Santa Rosa mountains, the festival site is simply breathtaking. And for the first time ever, Phish will combine two of its most cherished traditions - a multi-day camping festival and performing on Halloween - in a glorious three-day celebration.

Keeping the tradition of past Halloween shows, Phish will don a musical costume on Halloween night and cover another band's album. The tradition began on Halloween 1994 with Phish covering The Beatles' The White Album. In subsequent years, they covered The Who's Quadrophenia, Talking Heads' Remain in Light and the Velvet Underground's Loaded.

The band will play eight sets over the course of three days, and as with all past Phish festivals, fans will enjoy on-site camping, numerous attractions and art installations throughout the weekend.

TREY AND THE NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC

Trey Anastasio will join conductor Asher Fisch and the New York Philharmonic for orchestrations of classic Phish and Trey songs and the New York premiere of his composition "Time Turns Elastic" at 8p.m. on Saturday, September 12, 2009 at the Carnegie Hall. The evening's performance will serve as a benefit for for the Kristine Anastasio Manning Memorial Fund.

The program will feature classic Phish songs and solo Trey compositions, as well as the New York premiere of Time Turns Elastic, co-composed by Anastasio and long-time collaborator Don Hart. Putting The OM In Community

As most of you are probably well aware, all three upcoming Hampton Coliseum shows are completely sold-out. If you don't have tickets to a particular show, we ask that you please refrain from going to the venue in hopes of getting one. Even if no ticketless fans show up, sold-out Phish shows in communities like Hampton are high impact events that strain the normal daily flow. Add ticketless fans to the equation and the situation can quickly become overwhelming to the local community. Thanks in advance for respecting the Phish scene.

The Clifford Ball In Stores Now

Phish Plays Bonnaroo 2009

Phish will play two shows at the 2009 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival. The band will play a full two-set performance as well as an additional late-evening set. The eighth annual four-day camping and music festival will be held on June 11 - 14 in Manchester, Tennessee, 60 miles south of Nashville. The final lineup will total over 120 bands and over 20 comedians performing on 13 stages over four days.

Additional artists at the festival include Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Beastie Boys, Nine Inch Nails, TV on the Radio, Wilco, Al Green, David Byrne, Snoop Dogg, Merle Haggard, Animal Collective, Lucinda Williams, Femi Kuti, Mars Volta, Coheed and Cambria, The Del McCoury Band, Alejandro Escovedo and Rodrigo y Gabriela to name a few.

Last week I was contacted to make a video for a new Kanye West produced Jay-Z song for RED & the Global Fund to Fight AIDS in Africa. It launched today (World AIDS Day) at red.msn.com. And while I'm happy to be able to help the cause I'm also more than a little bit excited about getting a chance to make something for the likes of Jay-Z and Kanye. I've been turning down client requests to use Typographic Illustration for 5 years in hopes that one day the phone would ring and it would be Hova. I'm pretty sure that this is the first rap video to end with a download source code link.

Common	Bakari Kitwana

Hip-hop artist Common, a 2008 Grammy Award winner and five time NAACP Image Award winner, and Bakari Kitwana, co-founder of the first ever National Hip-Hop Political Convention, are the keynote speakers for Third Annual Clarion University Hip-Hop Symposium on Thursday, Oct. 23. The program features speakers from around the world and an International Film Festival based around the theme "Hip-Hop Symposium 2008: Global Impact!"

Common and Kitwana will cap the day's events with their presentation at 7 p.m. in Marwick-Boyd Auditorium.

Kitwana, in addition to being the co-founder of the first ever National Hip-Hop Political Convention is the author of "The Hip-Hop Generation: Young Blacks and the Crisis in African American Culture." He is currently an artist-in-residence at the University of Chicago.

Last summer he was called as an expert witness by the ACLU in the case of a junior high school student in Pennsylvania who was expelled for his rap lyrics. His expert testimony was referenced in the judge's ruling, which allowed the student to return to school.

The former editor of national top-selling music magazine ‘The Source," Kitwana's writings have appeared in the Village Voice, The New York Times, The Nation, Savoy and the Progressive. He has taught in the English departments at Texas Southern University and University of Houston Downtown. He's also been an adjunct professor in the political science department at Kent State University, where he taught a course "The Politics of the Hip-Hop Generation."

Kitwana has been the editorial director of Third World Press, a consultant for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and for the last decade since the publication of his first book, "The Rap on Gangsta Rap," has lectured on hip-hop and youth culture at colleges and universities across the country, including Harvard University, Columbia University, New York University, and Stanford University.

His book, "Hip-Hop Generation," has been adopted as a course book in over 100 college classrooms in a variety of disciplines from sociology, history and Black studies to anthropology, music, and political science. He holds masters degrees in English and education from the University of Rochester. "Why White Kids Love Hip-Hop: Wankstas, Wiggers, Wannabes and the New Reality of Race in America," is his most recent book.

Hip-Hop artist Common is recognized for his emphasis on family values and departure from the "gansta rap" material and negative posturing sometimes found in popular hip hop or rap lyrics and videos. Born Lonnie Rashid Lynn in 1973, he was raised in Chicago, Ill., becoming the first widely hailed MC to emerge from that area. Under the name Common Sense he signed with Relativity Records in 1991.

He released "Can I Borrow A Dollar" in 1992 and "Resurrection" in 1994, the same year he was forced to abbreviate his name to Common due to a lawsuit by an Orange County-based reggae group called Common Sense.

"Resurrection" commented on the stagnant state of hip-hop and rap with the single, "i used to love h.e.r." It created discussion within the hip-hop/rap realm, drew attention to his talent, and prompted a lawsuit by rapper Ice Cube, who felt he was maligned in the song. The lawsuit did not end favorably for Common, and litigation slowed the production of "Resurrection."

Three years later he released "One Day It'll All Make Sense," which included a roster of rap and hip-hop's most talented artists. One of the singles, "Retrospect For Life," recorded by Common and Lauryn Hill of the Fugees, dealt with the topic of abortion.

Common was in the forefront of an unprecedented wave of family values in the hip-hop community in 1998, the same year he was the headline act for the Elements of Hip-Hop tour. His contributions featured his own father, Lonnie, on a single titled "Pop's Rap," an apology from his father for not always being there; and a video of his single "Rap City " on the BET network told the story of a young black man who decided to do the right thing by his pregnant girlfriend.

Other noted rappers such as Snoop Dogg, LL Cool J, and Coolio turned to the joys of fatherhood and marriage in their material, and Common was among those ushering in a new lyrical and spiritual trend toward family values and adulthood.

Kitwana and Common are also part of the 2008-09 Clarion University Martin Luther King Jr. Speaker Series.

The hip-hop activities will begin on Oct. 16 with a Hip-Hop Arts Exhibit in Marwick-Boyd Fine Arts Building.

The day-long events begin at 8:30 a.m. with a radio broadcast in the Gemmell Rotunda. book/CD signings and sales will also be held in the rotunda beginning at 11 a.m.

Two tracks will be run, a general schedule and one for educators. Teachers registering for the educator's workshop will receive three Act 48 hours. High school students will also be taken on a campus tours and will participate in discussion groups led by Clarion University students.

The general track includes:

9:30 a.m. - Youth Movement Around the World and Presentation of Hip-Hop Poster Awards by Martha Diaz, founder and president of the Hip-Hop Association (H2A), New York City, and producer of the Hip-Hop Odyssey International Film Festival. Introductions by Paul Bylaska, vice-president for finance and administration, Clarion University.

11 a.m. - International Hip-Hop Film Festival and Performances, Gemmell Multi-Purpose Room. Welcome by Brian Perkins, Clarion University Student Senate.

2 p.m. - Hip-Hop Global Impact Panel - Toni Blackman, Bakari Kitwana, Rufus Morris, Giuseppe Pepitone, and Carlos "Los-1" Ramirez II, with Janet White as moderator, Gemmell Multi-Purpose Room. Introductions by Dr. Rachelle Prioleau, dean, College of Arts and Sciences, Clarion University. Brian Perkins, President of the Clarion University Student Senate will provide the welcome.

Blackman is a U.S. Department of State American Cultural Specialist and Hip-Hop Ambassador to Senegal, Ghana, Botswana, Swaziland and Southeast Asia.

Morris is CEO and President, School of the heARTS, Syracuse, N.Y.

Pipitone is the author of, "Bigger Than Hip-Hop" and "Hip-Hop from the Italian Diaspora." He is on the advisory board of the Black Soil International Hip-Hop Film Festival based in Rotterdam/Amsterdam, and is creator and manager of the digital magazine Hiphopreader.it

Ramirez is a youth motivation speaker from Tampa Fla., and is a United States armed forces, "Combat Support Speaker"

White is a TV producer and president of 5 Stone Entertainment

The educators' track includes:

9:30 a.m. - "Critical Pedagogy and Hip-Hop" presented by Dr. Greg Goodman, assistant professor of education, Clarion University.

10 a.m. - "Hip-Hop Infusion into the Curriculum" presented by Dr. Susan Prezzano, professor of anthropology, geography, and earth science, Clarion University; and Dr. Laurie Occhipinti, associate professor of anthropology, geography, and earth science, Clarion University.

In this week's Pulse Report the streets are buzzing about Lil' Waynejoining forces with Jim Jones for a "Swagger Like Us" showdown againstJay-Z, T-Pain's vocoder receiving a vote of confidence from T.I. on "The Parker Report," Kanye West losing his bid to become an HBO star andMemphis Bleek explaining why he appeared in a shampoo commercial.

1. Behind Enemy Lines. The swagger epidemic in hip-hop has grown out of control. Since T.I. teamed up with Jay-Z, Lil' Wayne, and Kanye West on the West produced "Swagger Like Us" we've seen a rash of remixes. It was all fun and games when Diddy unleashed "Swagger Like Puff", but now comes word that the craze is about to set off a challenge between some of hip-hop's biggest names.

According to, the always in the know, radio personality Miss Info, Lil' Wayne has aligned himself with Jim Jones and Juelz Santana to record "Swaggerjack From Us" a rivaling version to the original. Apparently the hook goes: "All these other rappers jack swagger from us."

This news becomes rather fascinating due to the fact that Jay-Z has already commissioned a "S.L.U 2" featuring Nas, Andre 3000, andYoung Jeezy.

SMH. No one is going to be sadder than us if we hear another rendition of this song. Come on people! I'm just recovering from hearing "A Milli" a billi-ion different ways. More importantly, what's up with Wayne switching sides? Was he not satisfied with his role on the original? We all know Jimmy is probably going to take Hov to task on something, but who could Wayne bring forth issue with on the swaggerjacker version.

I don't know. Hopefully this is the last one. I certainly don't want to give any ideas to others to prolong this madness. Like say if LL Cool J, Nelly,DMX and Cam'ron got together for the "No One Used To Have Swagger Like Us" version. Oops, I just gave 'em an idea. Well since we're at it ya'll should come up with some of your own.

2. One Voice. Staying on the topic of things we can't escape, T-Pain's vocoder device was the topic of discussion on several outlets this week. First, the good folks over at "The Parker Report" put the wildly popular vocal apparatus on trial for its recent abuse by everyone from Lil' Wayne to R. Kelly. Host Erik Parker sat with T.I., Alfamega, DJ Drama and Big Kuntry King to come up with a verdict on who should be allowed the vocoder. [Watch here]

Everyone agrees unanimously that T-Pain has ownership to the re-introduction of the vocoder. However T.I. maintains that Lil' Wayne and Kanye West get a free pass for biting.

I don't have a problem when T-Pain, Wayne, and Kanye do it...because they do it best. Leave it to the professional. They don't have to do this. Wayne don't have to do this. It's just another sound.

With that said the final verdict came down as such: No biting allowed. If you want to do a vocoder record ask T-Pain.

While I agree with the final decision, I'd like to had a few things to the legislation.

If you have not sold a platinum album since 2005 you are not allowed to use the vocorder.
If you have not been romantically linked to one or all of the following you don't qualify to use the vocoder: Kanye West, Karrine "Superhead" Steffens or Ray J's package.
If your name is not Lil' Wayne, Kanye West, or T-Pain you can't use the vocoder.

And for anyone trying to qualify on options 1 & 2, you have to meet the criteria of all three. Sorry.

3. Not Made For TV. Staying on the topic of Kanye West, with or without any voice assistance his music care has taken off into another stratosphere. However his television career is stuck on the tarmac for now. According tocomingsoon.net, writer/director Larry Charles ("Entourage," "Curb Your Enthusiasm") revealed that he shot a pilot for a Kanye show but HBOshelved the project for the moment.

"What Kanye West said to me the first time, he said, 'I'm the black Larry David.' That's the first thing he said to me. So it's like a Kanye and 'Curb' show, it's kind of improvised about the situations and stuff. It was really good, but again I think it was too hardcore for HBO. Also, HBO's management shifted, but HBO doesn't have a good track record when it comes to black shows and I felt like that may have had something to do with it also. I don't see a lot of shows about that experience at all. This was very entertaining and we showed it to a lot of people. People gave it a very good response and it seems to be on the shelf right now.

That's really unfortunate. Let me find out HBO don't care about black people. A Kanye show sounds like it would be more interesting than anything HBO has on right now other than "Entourage." How does Flavor Flav get three shows, New York gets three shows, and Chance & Realget a show on cable TV and Kanye West can't? Something ain't right. Only thing left to stay is, give a black man a chance.

4. Bleek Outlook. There used to be a time when being the right hand man to the boss meant something. Folks would lather you up just to get closer to the man in charge. Well things have changed for Memphis Bleek. These days being Jay-Z's right hand man gets you a washed up role in a shampoo commercial. We all remember the peculiar spot Bleek did for Fructis a while back. Well the Brooklyn MC explained how everything comes back to the money and the bitches.

"They [Fructis] called me," he told SOHH. They contacted somebody at the label, had a big bag of money for me, and said, 'Yo, you just gotta f*ck with the b*tches.' Because my whole thing was, like, damn, a shampoo commercial? Man, I don't got no hair. I rock a du-rag and a baldie all day. I ain't got no hair, so what they want me for? And they was like, 'Nah, you just f*cking with the b*tches' and so I'm like cool."

Bleek even went on to discuss the status of his relationship with Jay.

"I ain't seen Jay since we came off the world tour. He came off the world tour and he bought a crib in the city, did a house warming and I ain't seen him, like I've been doing my thing. I don't be talking to the god, I just got an e-mail the other day, we got two shows coming up. Detroit. Miami. Then in two weeks Australia. We doing New York, Philly, Houston, Boston. I just get e-mails when it's time to hit the streets."

True story. I went through the same exact thing as Bleek. Back when my dad told me I wasn't cutting it in the family business and I had to venture out on my own. My pops ran Fucque Furniture Delivery for 40 years out of a little shop in Brooklyn. We were the number one delivers of Seaman's Furniture. Anyway, I was Ronald McDonald the summer after I graduated high school. I had to walk around in a 100 degree heat with a f*cked up red afro just to make a buck. But I too found solace in the fact I was doing it for the "b*tches." Chicks love Ronald McDonald.

Jay-Z, Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel are rallying their fellow countrymen behind Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama with upcoming shows around the U.S.Jay-Z will play two free concerts this weekend, one at Detroit's Cobo Arena on Saturday and the other at Miami's Bayfront Park on Sunday, aimed at getting fans to vote.

Anyone who registers to vote at the local Obama campaign office will receive a free ticket.

Both Detroit and Miami are in key battleground states with Oct. 6 registration deadlines.Meanwhile, Springsteen and Joel have announced they will play a fundraiser for Obama at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom on Oct. 16.The show, for which tickets range from $500 to 10,000, marks the first time the two icons have ever played at the same concert.Other guests are expected to be announced shortly.Springsteen endorsed Obama on his website in April, saying the Illinois senator has "the depth, the reflectiveness and the resilience" to be the next U.S. President.
