When selecting school software, educational merit is critical, but so is sustainability. The last thing a principal needs it to build professional development and instructional plans around software doomed to stagnate and wither on the vine once the original developers have lost interest. Of course, the same concerns apply to commercial software. Apple, Google, Microsoft and countless others have changed pricing models and shuttered products after corporate objectives changed.

Free and open source software is not an all or nothing proposition. You might test a few applications, and add more programs after your students and staff become comfortable with alternatives to commercial software.

Red Hat’s community site, opensource.com, is another excellent resource for software ideas and success stories.

In Todays Market POS (Point OF Sale) solutions become a day to day requirement for any small - Medium and large scale business regarding shopping centers, Mini Marts, Wall Marts, Grocery Shops etc etc.
Linux Also is also not behind the race to full filling all these needs, and when there is Linux the name of Red Hat, SUSE, Ubuntu, Fedora etc also whispers.
Here lets talk about POS solution on Ubuntu Linux. Because its easy to install and manage for anyone. Also for those who dont know about Linux.
So here comes the POS Solution on Ubuntu Linux by the name of "LemonPos" . For it you just have to follow the below mentioned instructions,

1. Click on Ubuntru Software Manager (Ubuntu 9.10)
2. Here Find 2 utilities and install them
   a. LemonPos
   b. Squeeze

3. Now go to Synaptic Package manager and install following things
   a. Mysql (with all packages)
   b. Apache2

Now import the database from LemonPos home page http://lemonpos.sourceforge.net/, and add it in Mysql database of your local machine. and create the users in it as mentioned on lemonpos website and enjoy the Lemon accessibility on you local machine.

Hands On: Moblin Linux for Intel Atom Based Netbooks

Intel has announced the availability of the first Moblin 2 Final release. This version introduces the platform's innovative new user interface with respect to the usage for smaller screen books. Although there are still some rough edges, it delivers impressive usability and aesthetic sophistication. I tested it on Compaq Mini 10 netbook so that I could get a real hands-on look at the new Final version.

Moblin is Intel's Linux-based based mobile platform for netbooks and MIDs. It is heavily optimized for the Atom processor and is designed to work well on small form-factor devices. The project is gaining significant traction among Linux distributors and many have partnered with Intel to participate in the development effort. Individual distributors will integrate Moblin components into their own netbook platforms or build their own derivatives.

Intel has provided several alpha releases last year which have demonstrated the platform's broad hardware compatibility, excellent boot performance, and other technical features. The alpha releases, however, did not include Intel's unique user interface components. A lightweight Xfce layer was used instead as a placeholder. In the new Final release, Intel has finally unveiled its new graphical shell, a highly specialized desktop environment that is designed to provide an optimal user experience on netbook devices.

Unlike Android, Moblin's graphics stack includes a standard Xorg server and can run conventional desktop Linux applications. Much of the software that is available today on mainstream Linux distributions can be brought to Moblin without requiring any porting effort. In fact, the beta includes quite a few standard GTK+ applications, such as GEdit.

Moblin uses an unusual task management paradigm that is well-suited to mobile devices. Applications are organized into "zones," which are loosely analogous to virtual desktops. When I launch an application, the shell will automatically create a new zone in which to house the program's windows. When all of the windows in a zone have been closed, the shell will automatically remove the Zone. The zones tab on the Moblin panel will display thumbnail previews of all of the windows in each zone. You can switch to a certain zone or window by clicking, and you can move windows between zones by dragging and dropping the thumbnails. The zones tab in the shell is Moblin's replacement for the conventional taskbar.

The applications tab displays launchers for the software installed on the system. The launchers are organized into categories and are searchable. When the cursor is hovering over a launcher, a pin icon will appear in the top right-hand corner. The user can click the pin to make the application show up in the favorites list at the top of the launcher tab. The user's favorite applications will also show up on the home screen.

As I found an interesting practical, which presents the degree of heat energy emitted by Motherboard of a normal PC, as you can make French Fries with it

First of all you are required to have plenty of cooking Oil, Aluminum Food container (empty), whole PC with Motherboard without casing.

Now place the Motherboard with oil in the container as shown

Now Turn on the system

And leave the System till you feel that now the oil is boiling, as the temperature can be checked by thermometer

At certain temprature put the potatoes in it

Now leave it for some minutes till they get fried. <--- according to your tase

After that put the dry fries in the plate and enjoy your snacks..... :)

Now the Recipe of the day is ready for you to eat....... :)

Canonical announced the release of Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop Edition,now it is also available for download on there website as www.ubuntu.com
As in there new release they had develop the interface for the netbooks which is great improvement in the open source field. The most significant feature of the ubuntu family is that they send the update patches for the OSs in so much simplified way, which really help the user to remain updates in all the ways.
Now I think after Ubuntu it becomes really easy for user to install the applications on Linux and get updated.
