I turned 30 yesterday.

I've decided to start a new blog leaving this one as an archive of the past two years.

I will leave this blog with saying that turning 30 and finishing my first book manuscript all within the same 24 hours was very very satisfying.

Derek is an old friend of mine, boyfriend of my best friend and super musician. His new band the Cave Singers just release there debut album on Matador and their video just went live this week for an amazing song "Dancing on our Graves" you can read about it and watch it HERE.

My friend Seyta, one of my only close friend left over from high school, runs this incredible business called Duchess. She makes custom men's suit's. I'll let her site speak for itself but if you happen to be in NY and can afford a fancy suit, well hope to it they are only there for two days- November 12 & 13th!

jill bliss of blissen was mentioned in the NY Times magazine last Sunday in an article about the Gocco. I blogged about it HERE.

My best friend and collaborator Micaela O'Herlihy is having a baby! It's a boy!!

The rest of the week includes:

Thursday morning I am meeting with Steven who runs the Lawton Gallery at UW Greenbay where I will be guest curating a show in October 2008 called "Hand-Me-Down". Later in the afternoon I have a phone meeting with the publicist from Princeton Architectural Press regarding book stuff. At 5 I meet with Cris (my editor) who will be helping me get my media together for this weekend's talk at Maker Faire.Then I play a show with Wooden Robot at Cactus Club at 10.

Friday my entire day will be spent doing preperation for Gallery Night (7-10pm) at my gallery Paper Boat. I may have mentioned it but The show is titled "The New Witch" with work by Xandar Marro, Pippi Zornoza, Micaela O'Herlihy, Kim Kisiolek, Polina Malikin, Katy Horan and yours truly. I can't resist the postcard image we used from Providence artist Xander Marro, it's a cloth patch that comes with a zine she put together titled "Witch".

Saturday I get up at 5am to fly to Austin for Maker Faire. Enjoy a little Texas.

Sunday I give my talk.

Monday I am back home working on the book and have band practice as usual.

My other Blog which I always reference just got written up as a blogger "Blog of Note" which is pretty rad. If you keep up to date with that one you will realize why this little guy gets neglected all the time......

This show I curated at Paper Boat is already open but the reception is next Friday. There is some amazing work in the show, if you are in the area you should check it out!!!!

Apparently I am not capable of maintaining all these blogs, myspace pages, email accounts etc. since I really was under the impression I had posted hear more recently.

My excuse to myself is that I was in Chicago shooting for the film at Renegade Craft Fair and then took a quick in-and-out trip to New York for the relaunch of American Craft Magazine. That's a legit excuse right? But still I wish I could stretch out the hours in a day to get more done, and to relax...... If you are interested you can read my other blog HERE.

I did wantto share my new favorite photos set that I just uploaded onto my personal flickr account from a few weeks ago when I went to the Bethesda County Fair with Joe and Kelly. It was the most organized flea market I've ever attended. It was actually more like a giant garage sale than a flea market but you get what I'm sayin' right? Today I received acupuncture for the first time ever for upper back pain and stress. It was pretty crazy, I walked away with my painful back feeling like normal and blitzed out of my mind from the release of endorphins that my doctor said is normal. I'm pretty excited about it. My back pain from sitting at the desk and working is getting to be a problem- with no insurance it can be a bit worrisome. If you live in Milwaukee you should know that at Apple A Day ( a wellness center in Bay View) offers a $30 walk-in acupuncture appointment!

Anyhow, I'm getting ready for this show that is opening on Saturday, make sure to stop in if you are in the hood!

Also if you speak Spanish check out the article HERE that went live today about DIY on the Marie Claire online (the Spanish version) where they link to the Handmade Nation Trailer-- pretty cool-- I think-- my Spanish isn't quite good enough to translate the entire thing. If you want to translate it for me, that would be super.

We've done it! We have secured a date and most importantly found our new home for the winter show (our location for the past three events at MSOE is no longer available). Our website will be updated in September with all sorts of details. Until then, we are pleased to know that our next show will be something special and new, including a fashion show in an elegant theater, live music played on a grand piano and drinks available in a full bar—all located in a historically refurbished building housing one of the largest private art collections in Wisconsin… drum roll please.

Dates to remember:
September 1st:Online applications will go live

October 3rd $75 vendor fee will be due by paypal or check

- Art vs. Craft is a juried event
- It is free to apply
- Be prepared, you will need digital work samples or a web site to be considered

Paper Politics Milwaukee: A Show of Socially Engaged
Printmaking, September 7, 2007-October 13, 2007

In September of 2007, Walker’s Point Center for the
Arts will hold a juried exhibit of socially engaged
printmaking curated by Josh MacPhee from Troy, New
York. The exhibit will showcase contemporary prints
that use themes of social justice and global equity to
engage community members in political conversation.
The front room gallery of WPCA will exhibit the
traveling Paper Politics art show and will feature
over 250 prints from artists around the world. The
back room gallery of WPCA will feature the work of
local artists living in Milwaukee County.

thick summer nights

It's the point of summer where in the morning I think about all my sweaters, tights, scarves and layers- tired of my skirts, t's and flops.... my hair is curly and huge from the humidity and I can't wait to drink hot coffee again.

I found myself answering email from my documentary account from last November this week.

Sometimes I find the perfect balance of busy. There is always a catch though, the big one right now is the fact that I am venue-less for my Fall Art vs. Craft event. It's actually a huge deal and I'm working on securing a space by next week. It was a totally unexpected turn of events after having the most successful show yet this summer, the school where our space is wasn't willing to rent the space after October. So it goes.

Oh, other totally boring personal news is that I let my really cool coffee shop job go and moved down a block to the new bar in my hood called Burnharts to tend bar. I've never bartended and it's been a long time since I've had a job that I don't have any training in. We will leave it at that- I'll share any hilarious "Faythe made me a drink that tastes like ass" stories for later. Right now I'm just training and filling in shifts, when I can. It should be a good little job to pay ye' ol' rent.

What else.... I just finalized the 2008 gallery schedule for Paper Boat. The idea is I will get all my press releases done ahead of time- 2008 is going to be all about making the most of my time and streamlining. So many RAD people showing with us in 08- let's see... Whitney Lee, Leif Goldberg, Steve MacDonald, Kate Binngaman-Burt, Xander Marro, Erin Rosenthal, oh the list goes on. So much good art, so little money to buy it. Thank the lord for Credit Card art collections and Chase and Visa funded independent films.

While I'm talking about Paper Boat, my little baby, if you are reading this and you live in Milwaukee, you should really really really come see the Mike Brodie and Monica Canilao show-- it's so so so good. I broke down and purchaced a piece from both of them. Totally worth it. HERE is a link to photos, but in person, it's way better.

this past week flew by with a very full house of guests in town for gallery night. monica canilao, mike brodie, soup and tod seelie all stayed with us for the opening of brodie & monica's show at my gallery.

opening night was a huge success and you can view pictures on the paper boat flickr account.

realizing i can't do everything, i had to cancel some important out of town dates, like the detroit urban craft fair. i am getting burned out and need to make sure i don't spread myself too extra thin.

the goal for the next few weeks is to get organized, plow through some editing of the film and get ready for fall (which means holiday stuff for the shop).

p.s. this photo is of our backyard where betsy played cello after the gallery opening. it was perfect.

p.p.s this morning i made pesto with the basil from my garden. it was super easy, my first time doing it. i was suprised to see how little pesto you get from sooo much basil.

I took the weekend off!

Thank you for volunteering, shopping, vending and spreading the word everyone. This event was a total sucess and we are begining planing for the falll/winter show soon, very very soon.....

This is what went down:
Over 2300 shoppers came to round 6 of Art vs. Craft held in Milwaukee, WI July7th & 8th.

200 swag bags were gone in less than 20 minutes and people started lining up outside an hour before the doors on Saturday!

Saturday night was the first time we hosted music at the event in the Todd Wehr Auditorium on the MSOE campus where the event was held. Calvin Johnson (K Records) headlined the show with local support The Goodnight Loving and The Trusty Knife kicked off the evening.

We also had a few new additions to the show including the very sucessful popsicle cart (all proceeds when to Handmade Nation, a documentary about the DIY art & craft community) as well as a & Make & Take& section of the show sponsored by Duncan/Tulip craft suppliers and ran by Fasten Clothing Collective. Kids and adults came and revamped shirts and decorated them with supplies donated by the sponsors.

Thanks to everyone who made this event possible including all the volunteers who worked the door and did behind the sceans stuff and our sponsors:

Q: What happens when you do too much and don't take time to rest?
A: You get walking pneumonia.

It's true for me at least. And like so many other working artists I have no health care. It's such a bummer that you have to weigh out how sick you really are until you just can't stand it any longer and finally go to some clinic. Good news, I'm better. But being at Renegade in Brooklyn a few weekends ago was torture. I was there to do promotion for my film Handmade Nation and I could barely sit at my table.

Renegade was a huge success and got written up in the New York Times yesterday. There are a few quotes from yours truly as well. The article has an awkward tone, in my option belittling our community a bit. But setting aside my criticism, it's cool that the show got such widespread press. I was also disappointed that in the print edition of the article the film was titled incorrectly, but a quick email to the writer and the online version was corrected.

This week I find out about some very big possibly life changing news in regards to a recently submitted book proposal. I decided that I am not jinxing myself talking about it because if it is meant to be with this publisher, it will happen. So, if you are the superstitious type, do some good luck dance for me.

In other shameless self promotion news, this week will mark my very first COVER SHOT in our local weekly MKE. Yes, the cover. It makes me squirm, but it's also very exciting that so much attention will be drawn to the quickly approaching Art vs. Craft! The article will apparently be about all the stuff I do from the shop to playing the musical saw (and everything in between). Cover cover cover. weird!!

I guess that's it for now, I mostly just wanted people to check out the NY Times article.
