GNRC Design Announces Greg Chapman as Creative Director

2012-12-04T16:55:00.002-08:00

GenericSurplus welcomes Greg Chapman to the team fulfilling the role of creative director. Hailing from one of the best-dressed towns in the UK, it’s easy to see why Manchester-born Greg Chapman has made menswear a focus for over 25 years. He spent the better part of the nineties buying rare, dead stock sneakers for shops in the UK and Japan; in fact, Chapman has worked in all aspects of the business from retail, buying, sourcing, designing and production. He has a vast knowledge of Americana clothing and all aspects of footwear which led him to launch the Fred Perry collection back in 2002 when the footwear division of the brand had been dead for over 30 years.

Chapman has contributed to GNRC since it’s inception 6 years ago, and worked on a signature design that eventually led to a capsule collection for The Generic Man launched this Fall exclusively for Selfridges in London. The recent full-time involvement finds him hard at work on the Spring/Summer 2014 collections and while we can’t give away too many details expect to see “more color, new fabrics and some additional silhouettes” to the expanding range. "Finding the right fit for your feet is like finding the right pair of jeans,” adds Chapman. “That’s why I’ve always appreciated Generic Surplus because there’s enough design on it to make it unique.” We’re excited to share more details as they develop.

The Harrington Boot : Holiday 2012

2012-11-29T12:05:00.004-08:00

Our ongoing collaborative relationship with artist, Steven Harrington continues this holiday season with the Harrington Boot in two added colorways: A charcoal grey beeswax leather and soft black leather atop our proprietary EVA outsole. Originally launched in spring, the roots of the Harrington Boot stem from the traditional desert boot updated to reflect a contemporary aesthetic. Harrington’s subtle desert-inspired graphics are embossed on the insoles and heals making this a casual yet tripped out trio.

Generic Surplus- The Dom and The Klein Holiday 2012

2012-11-15T17:26:00.001-08:00

The Dom and Klein - Holiday 2012

The inherently rugged yet dressed up Dom evolves for Holiday seen in classic black and cognac leather. Minimal yet street smart, the Dom sports contrast welt stitching and a heavy gauge stitch detail atop our proprietary long-lasting sole. The Dom combines street with civility making it the perfect hybrid shoe for an eclectic lifestyle.

For the man who appreciates a simple yet sophisticated shoe, we looked to The Generic Man staple, Grafton as a template for the Klein. A no frills bold black or rich cognac leather upper is combined with our sleek proprietary outsole making this style a must-have for just about any occasion.

Pictured in the Klein is Neil Schield, owner and founder of Los Angeles' premier record spot, Origami Vinyl. Generic Surplus embraces proprietors like Schield who share a similar affinity for the music and art communities right here in our own backyard of East Los Angeles. His stories and others can be found in our MANifesto (http://bit.ly/Sl3WFb), our blog and visually on our Instagram.

About Generic Surplus

Founded in Los Angeles as an extension of The Generic Man, Generic Surplus aims to continually push the evolution of everyday shoe design while simultaneously capturing the spirit and aesthetic of the city's diverse, modern-day urban landscape. From the desert to the sea and places in between, our shoes aptly reflect the authentic nature of the music, art and fashion scenes we and our wearers are so connected to.
