On Monday, June 21 at 7:30 PM, the Landmark Embarcadero movie theater in San Francisco will be holding an advance screening of I Am Love, starring Tilda Swinton. It's a really beautiful Italian film that's already won awards at the Boulder International Film Festival as well as the Dublin International Film Festival for best feature film and best female performance, respectively.

When did you first know you were interested in fashion? Was there a specific moment?

I'm less into fashion for fashion's sake than I am into the photography. I really enjoy fashion photography and all the things being done with it.

What's been unexpected about modeling? Any crazy stories?

I never expected to be good at what I do, or to enjoy it as much as I have. I decided to audition last minute, and then told Thom I wanted to try and get as involved as I could, but I never expected to be given so many opportunities. It's been really great. It's also way less glamorous than everyone thinks it is. It's crazy and hectic and completely insane. I love it.

What's your favorite color?

I have two. Red, because it's such a powerful color, and it's my school's color back at home as well as here at Stanford. Woo. And teal, I just love it. I wear it all the time. I'm a big fan of teals and browns and creams together.

Who's your favorite designer that you've worked with so far? Why?

Hmm. I've only done work with 2. Wayne Hwang and Nanette Lepore. Each designer has had a totally different aesthetic and feel and I've enjoyed both. I got to do both photo and runway work for Wayne and I did two shoots wearing Nanette's clothes in Vegas. Plus, I can fit in a Nanette 0, which always makes me feel good, considering I'm pretty far from a 0.

What fashion experiences have you had outside of CFS?

None really outside of CFS unless you count picking clothes out for my sisters and my roommate, haha. Lately, I've just been doing CFS stuff. I was lucky enough to go on the Vegas trip this year, which was absolutely amazing. We got to do some really cool stuff.

What inspired you to audition for CFS?

I decided to audition last minute. My roommate last year is in CFS (Nicole Shields), and she loved it, so I thought I'd try it out. I never expected to be chosen so thanks to all the staff. Woo :) I really really enjoy what I'm doing. I'm a tad too short and a bit big to model professionally, and I never took the idea of it seriously. I have been really fortunate to be given so many opportunities.

Is there anything you like most about being a part of CFS?

I love photo shoots and getting chances to work on that side of things. I think walking is great, but photos leave so much more room to play and experiment and every shoot is totally different. I don't know if I’ve had a favorite part so far - it's all been pretty fan-freaking-tastic.

You did a ton of photo work in Vegas in March, and you also walked the WDesigns show this past January. What did you think of those experiences?

They've been great. Every photo shoot is completely new and different, and it's fun to get into a character or mindset. Not to mention all the ridiculousness and fun when you know the people directing you and shooting you. I've only had one real runway experience and I really enjoyed it. It's so much more of an adrenaline rush, you get out there and instantly forget 99% of the things the staff tells you in rehearsal. It's soooo much fun.

I know they always say "what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas," but, well, what happened on the annual CFS photo trip to Vegas?

Haha. Vegas. What to say? It was crazy, fast paced but lazy at the same time, exhausting, humbling, you name an adjective, I could probably make it work for Vegas. It was a great learning experience and it was amazing to get to do such a huge array of shoots and watch everyone at work. I can't wait to see the rest of the photos as they're released.

Do you have any particular fashion icon or role model? Who/why?

I really like the work of a bunch of people, and I've learned from all of it. Everything from pictures I see that I like to Tyra preaching on America's Next Top Model. I try to learn from it all now that I'm actually doing it. To be the best you have to learn from the best.

What's your favorite accessory or styling piece? How would you describe your personal style?

Well...I have super short hair, am a huge tomboy. I don't wear heels unless absolutely necessary and love to be comfortable more than anything. I like simple cuts and solid colors. I don't really wear jewelry other than my rings that are both pretty meaningful and simple studs in my ears. I detest purses because they all seem to be either giant or little I have to waste a hand to hold it type things. I'm just very simple and practical overall. And I like it that way.

Any parting words?

It's Charity, B*tch!

Noah Landis, the force driving Kent Denim, shares some insights into his passion.

On his beginnings in fashion:

My fashion career started after school. I went to the Academy of Art University in San Francisco for design in menswear. After that I worked for GAP Inc., but I wasn't too thrilled with the whole corporate fashion world environment. I got started in denim when I had a little art studio down in the Mission District, where I began just sewing jeans. I love jeans. Construction-wise and material-wise, it's one of those products that everyone has a pair of. And working in San Francisco where jeans basically were born from Levi Strauss was a very cool thing - I felt very connected. Starting my own line was farthest from my mind at the time. I was just making jeans for friends for fun, and a friend told me I should really pursue it as a business, and that's how Kent Denim really started. It was my friend Kent who was like, you should really do this it would totally work, so that is the story of how Kent Denim became Kent Denim...

On Kent Denim's look:

As far the aesthetic of my jeans, Kent Denim began as great fitting jeans in raw unwashed denim. This allows people to break in their jeans naturally, without the jeans being washed and distressed so much that the materials are comrpomised. Jeans used to be only sold in their raw form, which is specifically why denim became so popular. After continuous wear, denim takes on the characteristics of its wearer and becomes the perfect fitting garment.

On the Spring/Summer 2010 Collection:

Well, to begin I will be debuting the Kent Denim Spring Summer 2011Collection at Charity Fashion Show. For this collection I am drawing on influences from San Francisco's underground bike messenger culture, combined with graphic tribal elements. I call it Bike Messengers of the Serengeti. Every collection starts with my denim concept. Washes, colors, material -- all play into how the collection forms. I began closely watching bike messengers and was fascinated how utilitarian and edgy their clothes look. They actually use chains as belts to lock their bikes up. As far as visual images, I just go to downtown San Francisco and snap shots of the cycling messengers, and in the Mission area those guys are everywhere. I think they have this great aura about them. They do what they do because of their passion for cycling. They are very much like a tribe. San Francisco really wouldn't have as much character as it does without them. They have their own style that exists only in their world, and their bikes are the only things that influence and dictate that style.

When did you first know you were interested in fashion? Was there a specific moment?

This may sound trite, but I actually don't remember a time when I wasn't interested in fashion. I used to draw a lot and thought I was going to be fashion designer when I grew up. I used to wear clothes I would "design" and sew together myself when I was in elementary school. Unfortunately, my craftsmanship wasn't so stellar so I would end up wearing dresses with gaping holes along the seams. My longtime friend Shannon has never let me live that down, ekk!

Who's your favorite designer?

Tom Ford. I loved his collections for YSL. I think his designs speak to me because they are so effortlessly chic.

What's your favorite color?

The whole spectrum between whites/grays/steely blues/blacks. My wardrobe is pretty much monochromatic, but a few bright colors and prints occasionally sneak in.

Who's your favorite designer that you've worked with so far? Why?

Alexandria von Bromssen, because her clothes are very much my style. And she is just a lovely person and I find her brutal honesty so refreshing.

What's been unexpected about modeling? Any crazy stories?

Changing between looks is such a frantic process with clothes getting caught in my hair and the accessories. Especially when someone is calling your name and you are only half-dressed!

What do you think of modeling with CFS?

CFS has been such a wild ride so far. From auditioning on a whim last October to doing photoshoots and local runway shows, I never would have imagined myself getting involved in fashion like this. I owe a lot to Executive Director Thom Scher and WDesigns' designer Wayne Hwang, who were there on my first photoshoot and my first runway show for WDesigns at the Freedom Ball event last December. Their confidence and fabulous-ness is infectious!

We hear you went on the CFS trip to Vegas last March. What were your impressions of the photo weekend?

Just a ton of fun! We were doing shoot after shoot. There was such a camaraderie with everyone pitching in to do hair and makeup, offering styling advice, setting up, and feeding the models (ie., Julia). Big shout out to Leslie who made my hair so pretty for the Nanette Lepore shoot with Mikayla. And of course, our very own photographer Stephanie who made all of us look good. Seriously though, it was hard work being fought over by hot CFS male models, Dan and Nick.

Who's your fashion role model?

I am hugely inspired by Kate Moss and her success despite her height, which is short by model standards. She is such a style icon.

Get ready for Shanghai-based Dutch designer Tosca Soraya's US premiere with her F/W 2010 Collection, HARDSCORE.

FCubed had the opportunity to hear what she has to say about her experiences in the world of fashion.

What got you interested in fashion?

I think when I was a kid I was generally interested in stories, cartoons, dressing up, painting, make-up, et cetera. Later I became interested in photography as well; my dad had his own studio in Amsterdam, which was closed before I was born. Still, he had loads of cameras and lenses. The technical side of photography didn't really interest me -- but the visual side did. I also used to sketch a lot as a kid. My sketchbook was always with me wherever I moved. And I enjoyed playing with different styles, mixing clothes together -- like track suits with cowboyboots, which totally didn't match. I loved it anyway.

During high school I figured fashion was more of an identity statement. While there was the desire to wear the brands worn by the popular kids, at the same time I felt more into exploring clothes and style. When I started going out, me and my friends experimented more with our outfits, hair, make-up. I wasn't sure what to study after high school, though. I was also interested in tourism, journalism, and interior design, but in the end I decided to go for fashion after all.

Since graduating from the Amsterdam Fashion Institute in 2007, I hadn't really designed a lot of 3D garments -- meaning, I only sketched without sewing. So I decided to spend the money I saved for travels through China. At that same time, I got the opportunity to show at CFS, which made me want to create a real collection of at least 20 outfits. And there was also another company, Vital Millenium and their brand Gindy Laura, interested in working with me as freelancer. I took this opportunity and worked at their factory in Shanghai, buying samples and developing our first collaboration collection AMS, a project which is currently in development. While I was there, the ideas for materials, colors, and shapes slowly developed into a visual collection that was all my own. Over the course of two years living in Shanghai, my different experiences and desires fed into this collection I was developing. The manager of Vital Millenium gave me a lot of support as well, and that was what motivated me to go all the way. I developed fabrics, patterns, patchworks, prints, and silhouets that are a mix of a lot of different things, but represent mixed cultures, mixed nature and technology, and lots of other mixed opposites. Also, my ex-collegues and friends were extremely supportive. I was the only designer of my own, first, handmade collection.

I just love fashion a lot, and I want to build up my experiences and eventually create a mature fashion brand like Chanel did.

What's influenced your work?

Because of all the traveling, I'm inspired by different cultures and natures. Experiences. Working with different people on different projects also influences my vision. But most important are the people who are closest to me, friends and family. I love it when they appreciate my designs but also when they critisize them. It's interesting to see how people respond to fashion.

Artists or people that influence my work are always in the picture. Designers that have been my rolemodels for the past 5 years are Nicolas Ghesquiere (BALENCIAGA), Alexander McQueen, Riccardo Tisci (GIVENCHY), Gareth Pugh, and Hussein Chalayan. I was shocked when I heard McQueen committed suicide. It really hit me, as he was one of the few actual designers who shares another world through fashion. He could literally communicate a fantasy, an experience, through shapes, fabrics, colors, and styling. Lots of brands just design clothes without a vision. Strong, feminine, sexy, romantic, futuristic: they all don't really tell anything. I hope to be able to also share a fantasy with my own collections.

If you weren't in fashion, what do you imagine you'd do?

If I can't do anything in fashion, I'm not sure where I would end up. I love to travel, and I love music and art. But what I love most is variation in work, environment, people, et cetera. I guess that would make me some kind of nomadic artist.

How did your collection Hardscore begin to develop?

Well, the first ideas for Hardscore weren't really there. I started looking around for fabrics and experimenting with them.

Can you tell me about the collection itself?

My collection is a combination of lots and lots of contrasts, inspired by two amazing cultures -- what they have in common, what they have in contrast. You may find elements that speak to your imagination, feminine dresses that might be found in a fantasy movie. On the other hand, there are lace streetwear items, armour-like tunics, and romantic, Medieval dresses. It's my first collection where no teacher or client gave me any bounderies, so it's all me. It's my fantasy, a story told by fabrics, shapes and colors and I hope it will be enjoyed as much as I enjoyed creating it.

What places inspired you for Hardscore?

Shanghai is such an amazing and inspiring place; the culture is very different from my Dutch origins. There is no freedom of speach and it's not allowed to protest or distort daily life. In contrast, however, everybody in China and Shanghai is starting their own businesses, experimenting with opportunities. Anything is possible. Shanghai has the most futuristic buildings I've ever seen, like the Pearl Tower and the Jin Mao tower, and on the other hand, it has ancient tempels and poor parts where people wash themselves on the dirty streets. Shanghai has the biggest opposites and contrasts all in one.

Holland on the other hand is very openminded, but at the same time their mentality is stubborn. They're curious but afraid of what they don't understand, what's different and new. Amsterdam is the city with the most different cultures in one place, worldwide. In Holland, people are very down to earth while in China people are very spiritual and peaceful. For example, Lady GaGa in Holland would be called 'a weird woman', while in China they love her expressionistic, exploding character. They like over-the-top and distortion, while in Holland it's accepted but found abnormal. 'When acting normal, you're already acting weird enough', is a very famous saying in Holland. Not everybody sticks to it, and many like to kick against it, but in general it's definitely part of the culture. In Holland it's very easy to be abnormal, and it's more usual to think inside of the box than outside of it. Compared to Chinese culture, Dutch culture is very intelligent, safe and risk-free.

How did you become involved in CFS? What inspired you to start modeling?

I auditioned during the open casting call last October, and so far, I like it a lot. I've enjoyed getting to know the other models in CFS as well as the staff and photographers/makeup artists. Part of why I auditioned was the staff - I had always toyed with the idea of trying out, and this summer, Rob Pothier introduced me to Executive Director Thom Scher and they both really encouraged me to audition.

What's been unexpected about modeling? Any crazy stories?

This will sound cliche, but it's definitely much more difficult than it seems. Super fun though. During the Aksel photoshoot, it was drizzling on and off, and we were shooting outside for a couple of hours. During the final shots, we were actually in a wading pool. My legs were so cold I couldn't even feel them anymore. At the same time, I also really felt like I bonded with some of the other girls from the shoot.

What are you looking forward to, other than 05.15.10? What's been your favorite part so far?

I'm really looking forward to working with Tosca. Rob [Pothier] has said so many great things about her and her work - I can't wait to see it. It's really exciting that she's doing her US premiere in collaboration with CFS!

What fashion experiences have you had outside of CFS?

Not many, really. I was in a hair show in Seattle back in high school. I also, randomly, had a photographer at Caffe del Doge (where I work as a barista) give me a hundred bucks to take a few shots while I was at work. That was pretty cool.

Who's your favorite designer that you've worked with so far? Why?

I've really only worked with Wayne [Hwang, of WDesigns], but he would probably be my favorite anyway. His work is beautiful and he's always surprisingly calm and of course so nice. Plus he cut my hair! I also really loved participating in the WDesign's Venus show, although my experience was tainted with the beginning stages of pneumonia. But with each modeling experience, I get more confident and comfortable.

We hear CFS has some crazy costume parties. Have you had any particularly good costumes?

The "Harajuku" party CFS threw in March is the perfect example of this. That night was crazy. I had so much work to be doing, but instead spent about 3 hours on my costume. I didn't really know what Harajuku was, so first I googled it for a long time, then dug through my closet and costume stuff, and threw it all together. The makeup I did myself based on a tutorial online, and the wig was from the CFS Lady Gaga party. It was so much fun!

Do you have any particular fashion icon or role model? Who/why?

Definitely my grandma. She's the person who inspired my love of clothing.

What's your favorite accessory or styling piece? How would you describe your personal style?

Earrings are definitely my favorite accessory. I am always wearing a pair unless I am particularly bumming around. As for my personal style, I would say it's a little eclectic, and that I'm still trying to figure it out. I used to have a punky edge to my fashion, but have abandoned that for the most part. Color is really important for me - I like things to be rich and bright. Since I'm from WA, it has taken me a while to get used to wearing dresses and skirts (because of the cool weather), so they are slowly working their way into my staples of jeans and shirts. I also love me some boots.

The event had a great crowd ranging from well known photographers and press, to party promoters and stylists, to fashionistas, CFS alums, and fans. The invite-only reception gave the crowd an exclusive sneak peek at what the Amsterdam-native will be showing on 05.15.10, and it certainly did not disappoint. CFS Models with extreme hair and makeup moved between boxes dressed in 10 of Tosca's 25-look set while the crowd mingled and sipped on Vitamin-Water cocktails.
