Blue flowers are some of the most striking plants around and can add a rich splash of color to any garden. Plant them in a cluster of all blue or mix them in with other flowers for a rainbow of color.

When planting flowers, it is important to remember to follow the instructions on the tag for the plant. Always buy plants that will thrive in the conditions in which you intend to grow them. A plant that loves sun will not do well in a shady area and you will only be disappointed with the results.

When planning your garden, be aware of the bloom time of the flowers. Planting perennials with different bloom times near each other will insure a garden that has blooms all season long. Remember also to plan for the height of the plants, putting the
taller ones in the back.

Consider the flowers on the list below for your garden.

Polemonuim aka Blue Pearl – A compact plant with deep sky blue flowers that grows to 10″. It blooms in late spring to early summer. Plant in partial shade and in well drained soil.

Blue Sea Holly – This dramatic plant has a lavender blue cone like flower with long spiked petals. It grows to 30″ and is a favorite for dried flower arrangements. Plant in full sun – blooms in mid to late summer.

Delphinium aka Butterfly Blue – Bright blue delicate flowers adorn a plant that blooms in early to mid summer. It reaches 10″ tall and prefers a sunny location with rich moist soil.

Campanula aka Blue Carpet – Bright blue to lilac colored flowers bloom for weeks in the middle of summer. This low growing perennial grows to 4″ and prefers full sun with well-drained soil.

Penstemon aka Blue Buckle – This plant has tubular shaped blooms in blue to purple and flowers in mid summer to early fall. It grows to 15″ and likes well-drained soil with full or partial sun.

Hydrangea aka Nikko Blue – Gigantic clumps of blue flowers adorn this shrub for most of the summer. In the fall, the flowers turn a golden color. This plant is a new variety that prefers rich soil but will grow in shade, partial sun, or full sun.

Vinca – Medium blue flowers and glossy green leaves form a carpet that grows to about 6″ tall and blooms in mid spring. This plant will grow in most soil conditions, in the shade or sun.

Ajuga aka Bronze Beauty – This short bushy plant has spikes of blue flowers that grows quickly. Great as a ground cover or in raised beds. It blooms in spring and prefers a shady area.

Scabiosa aka Butterfly Blue – A bushy perennial with lavender blue flowers that bloom from June to October. This plant likes full sun and attracts butterflies and hummingbirds.

Verbena aka Babylon Blue – Blue purple flowers petals adorn a plant that blooms in early spring. Great for window boxes and planters.

One question that comes up this time of year a lot is what is the proper mulch to use for trees. Its easy to grasp the basic premise of mulch, but when people go to their local nursery they see many different kinds. How do you know which one to use? The short answer: wood chips.

The very best mulch to use for trees is something that is going to decompose gradually. Mulch made from wood chips fits the bill perfectly, since it rots slowly, and as an added bonus, this mulch is quite low in nutrients so will not encourage weed growth. Composted wood chips are the preferred material; these can be used as durable, low-maintenance mulch, which weathers to a silver-gray color.

The bad news is that most wood chip mulch is sold as fresh material, not in a composted or aged state. These chips also decompose slowly, but as they do decompose, microorganisms develop in the mulch and use nutrients from the soil that might otherwise be available for plant growth. Composted material will not support these microorganisms, which is why it is the preferred material. One solution to this dilemma is to buy un-composted wood chips ahead of time and compost them yourself. Put them in a backyard composter along with some leaves, twigs and bark. Make sure to keep it well aerated and turned to prevent bad smelling mulch.

Go Organic

Organic mulches are advantageous also for their soil-enhancing characteristics, as opposed to inorganic mulch materials like crushed rock, gravel, tarps, and landscape fabrics. As organic mulches decompose over time, they slowly discharge tiny quantities of nutrients and to the soil. Therefore your layer of mulch should be renewed as needed to maintain a 2- to 4-inch depth.

For individual trees, your mulched area should cover from 3 to 6 feet out from the trees base. It is best to clear the mulch away 1 to 2 inches from the base of plants to help prevent damage to the tree trunk from insects, excess moisture, and diseases. In fact, this is the classic mistake that many people make with mulching trees.

You shouldnt have a pile of wood chips around your tree that resembles the thing Richard Dreyfuss made in his kitchen in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Rather, it should look more like a flattened donut. This also holds true for mulching shrubs, by the way.

Follow these simple tips and your tree should do well and require less watering and fertilizer than an unmulched tree.

Planning to decorate your bathroom? Need some ideas to give your bathroom some personal touch? Then look no further. Here are some ideas to jazz up the looks of your bathroom. The colors that you use for your bathroom can help create the right atmosphere for your bathroom. You could use light colors such as green, blue, cream yellow or other pastel colors. Light colors help soothe your mind and create the perfect milieu in your bathroom.

If your bathroom tiles have become faded or lost their sheen, then you would need to get them polished or give them a matte look. Otherwise, if they are falling apart, then you need to put new tiles for your bathroom. Keep some little decorations on your bathroom shelf. These could be the trinkets you got from a holiday visit, for instance.

Shower curtains give your bathroom a fresh look. The use of colors animates your shower curtains and the entire look and feel of your bathroom changes completely. You could use one of those curtains with various themes.

Even your glass shower door can improve the looks of your bathroom instantly. You could use colorful glass shower doors or stained glass shower doors with various themes on stained glass. However, you could choose to use plain glass shower doors, as they can make your bathroom appear larger than usual.

Also get drawers made for the things that you use regularly such as your toothbrush, soap and other bath accessories. Add separate holders for your towels, shower caps and other accessories. Try to make the best use of your bathroom space by including the necessary items within the bathroom. Make sure that your bathroom is a place you look forward to return to the next morning or after a long day.

Closets are important fixtures in the house. Aside from containing and providing protection for clothes, toys, and food, the closet contributes significantly to the room’s ambience and design.

Before placing an order for a closet, here are some things that you need to consider.

* Size

The size of the closet depends on the size of the space in which the furniture will be placed. After considering the amount of space, also think about the amount of items that you will be placing inside the closet.

It is suggested that you place similar items in one closet than having several closets than contain the same items. This will provide ease in organizing the contents and in looking for things stored in the closet.

* Materials

While most closets are made of wood, the most important thing that you need to consider is the sturdiness of the materials used. Closets are almost permanent fixtures in the house. These cannot be easily replaced without going to a lot of trouble with the construction.

So make sure that the materials used can stand thru time until you decide to have the house renovated. Make sure that the wood has been pretreated to prevent mold and insect growth.

Also, make sure that the materials are suitable for what you intend to store in the closet. Some closets may not be good for storing food, so ask first before buying a closet or ordering one.

You can also purchase a closet in three ways. You can buy stock closets, which are ready-made that you can take it home on the same day. This is cheaper, however this provides you with little options.

You can order semi-custom closets. This would mean that the maker can give you samples of designs, parts and accessories, and you can select your own combinations.

Custom closets are the most expensive. If you choose a custom closet, you can specify the size and shape (for irregularly-shaped spaces) and design of your closet that you would like to order.

Also consider the drawer slides. These are rated according to load capacity as light, medium or heavy. It is better to choose slides that have full extension capability so can access the full depth of the drawers.

* Contents

Consider the amount of contents that will be stored in the closet. It will be better that you have a single closet for similar items for ease of storage and finding what you need.

Also, think about what type of items will be stored. Will you need additional drawers, attachments and racks for your closet? Make sure that you inform or ask the maker about this so he can give you suggestions and more information.

* Design

If you will be placing an order for a customized closet, you can choose exactly what you would like it to look like. Here are some considerations.

Finish – Apart from considering the latest trend, ask what will look good with your home. For a traditional style, brushed finishes, polished

nickel, pewter or brass will look great in your home’s interiors. For contemporary style, enameled and gloss-metal shine will match your home’s style.

Knobs and pulls – Knobs and pulls are mounted on drawers and doors to facilitate opening. Knobs are attached with a single bolt and screw and require less space than pulls, which are attached by two screws. Both can be combined with a backplate or can be used alone.

These are available in a variety of designs, colors and finish including sterling, antique or polished brass, aged bronze, iron, nickel, polished chrome, ceramics and antique copper.

Backplates – Backplates are placed on the knob or pull and the drawer or door surface. These are used to cover existing holes on the surface (usually when changing knobs or pulls), to protect the surface (during construction or when the knob is pulled) and to improve the design of the hardware.

* Budget

Ready-made closet are always the cheapest but make sure that these will fit your allotted space in your room. If you will be able to stretch your budget, it is still best to get a semi-custom or customized closet so you can specify the size and the design.

You can always check online for different offers on stock, semi-custom and custom closets. Surely, you can get one that will match your storage and decorating needs.

Good design not only makes the inside of your home more lovely, it can also take bloom in your garden. And, since plants cost a fraction of the price of new furniture, outdoor decorating can be a lot easier on the wallet. Here are some ideas you may want to cultivate.

Both interior decorators and landscapers consider size, color and texture. A good place to start is by looking at the size of the space. Dwarf plants are very useful in tight spaces, but can get lost in a lush perennial border. Curb appeal and backyard views also demand something bigger. Every garden needs at least one impressive specimen plant to anchor the landscape.

Think about color. Many people focus on flowers and forget about the months that a plant is not in bloom. Plant breeders have responded to this by producing varieties with colorful foliage for season-long appeal.

Texture is another important design element. Large leaves have big impact, while narrow or cutleaf foliage adds delicate interest to gardens. Fine or cutleaf foliage sways with the wind, a lovely effect.

For example, the new Black Lace sambucus has everything the homeowner needs for stylish outdoor spaces. Dark purple leaves provide interesting color all season long, and are a fantastic combination with popular perennials such as black-eyed susans. Like Japanese maple, its finely cut foliage makes it a choice specimen for entryways and other high-impact areas.

Black Lace offers more than color and texture. Its huge pink spring flowers will produce fall berries for jam or wine, or may be left on the plant for wildlife to enjoy. Like all well-designed products, Black Lace offers both form and function.

Best of all, this new plant is adaptable and easy to grow. It’s tolerant of most soils, even soggy ones, and will grow in sun or some shade. Six feet tall at maturity, Black Lace doesn’t require pruning, although homeowners can cut it back after blooming if desired. A full-sized mature Black Lace is an impressive specimen for either formal gardens or casual backyard scenes. It can also be grown in a decorative container for the patio or deck.

Plant breeders work hard to develop useful new varieties like Black Lace. The Proven Winners brand carefully selects the most beautiful and easy-to-grow varieties so successful gardening is easy. After all, why should fashionable landscapes be reserved for expert gardeners? The rest of us deserve good design, too. Cold hardy and adaptable, Black Lace will thrive for years. It’s an easy way to add durable style to your garden.

So are you ready to bring good design into your garden? It’s worth the effort. After all, your yard is the biggest room in your house.

Black Lace is just one of over 50 colorful, easy-to-grow Proven Winners ColorChoice varieties. They’re easy to find at your garden center-look for the plants in the white pots.

Good concrete pond construction means not taking shortcuts. Improper methods can lead to more money spent on maintenance, repairs, or replacement than on the cost of the initial construction. Since good concrete pond construction equates to having one that lasts a lifetime or longer, follow these rules of thumb to get it right the first time!

Keep in mind that for suitable concrete pond construction, you need to pour the concrete to a thickness of four to six inches. After deciding on the dimensions and outlining the area, all soil (and rocks!) should then be dug out. Forms then need to be built and placed where concrete is to be poured, along with the proper placement of cut-to-fit reinforcement bars (rebar).

For digging out the area for concrete pond construction, you will need shovels, picks, a crowbar, and, of course, a wheelbarrow. Some other necessary items include a carpenters level, string, stakes, sheets of plastic, and a long two-by-four.

Pouring the cement in concrete pond construction should be done in one day, unless the pond is very large, and then it must be poured in sections. Pour cement in the bottom of the pool first, then the sides. If shelves have been dug out, pour cement there, next. Finally, pour cement for the top of the pond and for any coping that may be involved.

After you have completed these first steps of your concrete pond construction project, you need to let the cement cure for several days under plastic. Treating with muriatic acid at this stage helps prevent high pH levels in water later, which benefits fish and plants. After the acid treatment, apply several coats of paint made for pools or masonry sealant, allowing each coat to dry thoroughly.

Concrete pond construction can be a true learning experience. Its best to start with a smaller pond, then if you meet with success, you can then move on to a larger project. But once you get the hang of concrete pond construction, theres no limit to where you can go from there. So learn, build, and then build some more!

Bar stools are very popular items of furniture, which not only enhance the appearance of a room, but provide versatile seating for all types of occasions. Modern bar stools come in a huge variety of designs, to suit rooms of any theme and some are even made for outdoor use. From traditional wooden counter stools for rustic country kitchens, to contemporary metal bar stools complete with swivel seats, ideal for a home bar or games room, there’s a barstool design to suit all tastes.

If you like to entertain, bar stools are perfect for relaxing in whilst enjoying a sociable drink with friends. You can take your pick from various different styles, including simple backless designs with solid or cushioned seats, and those with armrests and seatbacks. Upholstered barstools can be covered with hardwearing fabric in your choice of colors and patterns, to compliment your existing dcor and other furniture. Vinyl and leather bar stools are other popular options to consider.

Alternatively, you may prefer to buy stools with detachable cushions that tie-on to the seatbacks. This gives you the advantage of being able to change the covers for cleaning or if you fancy a change of look, and can be useful if your stools get lots of use.

When deciding which bar stools to buy, remember to take accurate measurements of the space available, to ensure a comfortable fit. Bar stools should be just the right height, so they are comfortable to sit in, with adequate legroom, but close enough to the counter top for convenience. As a rough guide, aim for a gap of around 9 or 10 inches between the seat and the counter. Think about the positioning of your bar stools and leave enough space between each one for people to be able to move freely. Commercial style swivel bar stools can work well in home settings too, and are great for saving space.

Online stores are excellent places to browse a huge range of different bar stools and compare prices, making it easier for you to find the perfect bar stools to transform your home.

Your home is your haven where you feel comfortable and secure, and it should be the last thing you should have to worry about. Thanks to technology, now you can pick and choose from a variety of home security systems, residential alarm systems, installation kits, do-it-yourself electronic goods and services, and secure your home or business in an easy but effective way.

A home security system can foil the attempts of the burglars. In an advanced system, the control box will activate a siren or other loud alarm noise flashing outdoor lights and a telephone auto-dialer. This alerts the occupants and neighbors that someone has broken into the house. It drives the intruder away and cna inform the police which house has been broken into.

The telephone auto-dialer can dial the police directly and play a pre-recorded message giving the address of the house and any other relevant information. This message will usually play over and over again to allow the police to hear it even if the call is put on hold for some time. Alternatively, it can dial the security company that installed the equipment that will then relay this information to the police. They can even dial your cellphone to alert you!

Home security is a rapidly growing field, and there are new and improved burglar alarms being invented all the time. All these systems are more or less built around the same basic structure. There is a central control box that monitors several motion detectors and the perimeter guards and sounds an alarm when any of them are triggered.

It is now quite common to have burglar alarms installed not only in stores and other businesses, but in private homes as well. These systems range from inexpensive do-it-yourself kits to sophisticated whole-house security networks that must be installed by professionals. However, some of the most effective alarm systems are also the simplest. The most basic burglar alarm is a simple electric circuit built into an entry way; it is as effective as the family dog. But the problem with it is that the intruder can cut off the connection by snapping the wires and render it useless.

To overcome this flaw the modern burglar alarms incorporate the control box into the circuit. It has its own power supply and monitors the circuits and sounds the alarm. The control box won’t cut off the alarm until somebody enters a security code at a connected keypad. To make it even more secure, you should place the control box in an out-of-the-way spot, so the intruder can’t find it and try to destroy it.

Another simple option of home security is the basic floor mat that uses an open circuit design with two metal strips spaced apart. These metal strips are pushed together when somebody steps on the mat and the circuit is completed.

All of these circuit systems are effective home security devices for guarding the perimeter of a house or business from the points an intruder is likely to enter the building. Once the entry points are taken care of your home security system is in place and you can feel absolutely safe and secure in your house.
