On May 10th 2012, we at ARME’s Beagle Freedom Project worked with another rescue to free 20 beagles from a laboratory in San Diego. We took 10 into our care. These dogs are all males between the ages of 4 and 7 and have spent every waking hour inside of a cage and being tested on. They were not given any enrichment so they have no idea what toys are; the pads of their feet are still soft because they have never been walked. We believe they were being used in groups for different types of testing since they all behave extremely differently. Some are deathly fearful of humans while others are simply desperate for a kind touch.

Animal Testing is REAL and is HAPPENING every day ALL OVER THE WORLD. Our rescues do not yet even scratch the surface of how many animals, including dogs, are spending their lives suffering in laboratories. Here are ways you can help make a change for these animals:1. Purchase only cruelty-free items.2. Boycott companies that test on animals and voice your opinion.

3. Introduce a cruelty-free ordinance in your jurisdiction.

4. Foster or adopt a rescued lab dog. (See our website for adoptable dogs)

5. Spread the word! These companies HIDE what they do! Make sure everyone knows what goes on behind closed doors.

6. Donate. We are a non-profit and rely solely on your donations to continue our rescues as well as our educational campaiagns to END animal testing.

THANK YOU!

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….

I received a shot to calm me down so the Warden could administer the lethal injection that would put me to sleep…”forever”

But… I fooled them, When they came back to give me “The Big One” I was standing up wagging my tail. While they were giving me the shot “again” to calm me down I was giving them wet kisses….. Once again they left the room and when they returned to give me the fatal dose to euthanize me I was once again standing up wagging my tail and I AGAIN greeted them with wet Kisses.

It was agreed.. I was not meant to die… They scratched killing me off their list of dogs to kill today.

I am a 6 year old Fox Hound and my name is Elvis. Yes, I have heard it many times… and your right, “I ain’t nothing but a hound dog.” I must admit, I never get tired of hearing that because Elvis was “The King”

I am not sure how I ended up in this situation, I guess my folks fell on those hard times that I hear people talk about. They had taught me well when I was younger, I am very calm an extremely well mannered. I love everyone especially kids. I get along well with other dogs too.

There is one thing that I really can’t stand to be around and that is CATS…. I HATE CATS!

If the truth were to be told, it may not be that I hate cats… I just think it is the greatest thing to chase them. Somehow they just don’t seem to understand that I want to play with them. I am not real sure I want to play with them myself. In fact I am not sure what I would do with one if I caught it, but it is best not to put me around cats…PERIOD.

I love to go for walks, I am a perfect leash walker. I especially love to just hang out with someone who will love me for the big friendly hound dog that I am… You can “click here” to see what a handsome boy I am.

I am looking for a forever home. I have been through a lot over the years and I promise to be the very best friend to you that I can. I would love to meet you. You can call the shelter to make arrangements to check me out and see what a good boy I really am. Please meet me at my foster family’s home.. I hate being in that cage at the shelter… I just hate it. When I am there I can’t show you what a good dog I really am. I will be waiting to meet you…

Yours forever….

I have written many times about my beloved Andrew, he was a hound dog too, very similar to Elvis. If I didn’t have cats I would love to have this wonderful dog join my family. I met Elvis the other day at his foster home.. what a delight he was. I hope you will consider giving Elvis a forever home. He will be all that you could hope for in a true companion. Cindy

Cat owners have confided in me that their cats pee on their walls, on draperies, on counter tops, ect. This seems to be a problem with un-neutered male cats but that is not always the ONLY case.

Female cats as well as male cats are known to do this. In many cases even the cats that have been fixed do this.

I am certain this nasty little habit that cats do is one of the greatest causes for them being returned to shelters or worse, just dumped off along a back road.

This also appears to happen when there is more than one cat in the house. Once one cat does this nasty little trick of peeing on things that it is not suppose to the other cat think this must be totally acceptable behavior.

Some times when a cat pees where it is not suppose to it is an indication that it may be sick, so it is always a good idea to rule out this possibility.

Perhaps a stray cats walked through your yard, your peeing cat may simply be marking it’s territory. They don’t know that your not crazy about the “way” they have chosen or “where” they have chosen to leave their scent.

I know all of this to be true because a few years ago someone dropped off 2 cats, a boy and a girl. I am certain they were brother and sister, The little girl had been fixed but the boy had not been,

I accepted them into my home to join the other cats that had been dumped off.. people are so cruel, but that is another post.

It was not long before I knew why someone had dumped these beautiful cats off. They were PEE-ERS!! One spot on my wall was their favorite spot, by the food. The other spot was by one particular drapery, every 3 or 4 this drapery would be pee-ed on. My daily routine was to wash the wall and every 3 or 4 days I had to wash the drapery.

I know many reading this would think I was crazy to put up with that but when you love critters like I do you just grin and bear it… and keep washing up!

I was always on the lookout for something that would be of help to me so this nasty little habit would cease.

I came across an article on the internet for a formula that I could mixed up myself and was able to put an almost complete halt to this horrible nasty habit.

I mixed up the formula with ingredients that I had around the house and proceeded to do as described. after about a week of following the instructions my cats nasty habit was almost completely GONE.

Pee-Away Formul worked for my cats nasty little habit, maybe it will work for your precious little angels too.

I know you have tried many things… How did that work out for you? Try Pee-Away, it just might be what does the TRICK for you TOO!

A few years ago I bought myself a Furminator. I bought 2 different sizes. I bought a large one for my bigger dogs and I bought a smaller one for my small dog and my cats.

Furminators are amazing. I used the Furminator on the big boy Vlad first. Vlad has a beautiful long black coat, he is a flat coated retriever that I was lucky enough to adopt many years ago. Vlad loved the attention of being brushed as he always does. But I was amazed at the lose fur I was getting off of him.

When I was done I had mound of fur from Vlad. I just kept thinking if I had NOT brushed that out that fur would have been all over the floors and the furniture.

I proceeded to do the rest of my dogs with my new toy “Furminator” but the one that I got the most lose fur from was my lemon colored beagle “Holly”… What an undercoat she had!!

I can’t say the cats were as crazy about being brushed as the dogs but it was especially helpful to brush them in the spring to help them shed their winter coat.

I liked my Furminator so well I bought everyone on my Christmas shopping list who had a dog or a cat one for Christmas. They too thought it was a great gift.

You can see all of the Furminators as well as many other items for your pets at this site…. Entirely Pets. This is where I bought my Furminators and where I buy all of my pet products.

Do you have a dog that is afraid of the vacuum cleaner, fireworks, or thunderstorms?

My big boy Vlad gets into the bathtub when it thunders. My Vlad is NOT a sissy… He is 97#s of beautiful black fur. Vlad is a flat coated retriever that I was lucky enough to be able to adopt many years ago.

Vlad is the love of my life but it breaks my heart when it thunders he is inconsolable. He pants, shakes and drools while he cowers in the bathtub.

My little girl Ilsa… hates the vacuum cleaner. She runs around the house barking when I even open the door of the cupboard that I store it in. When she runs around the house barking in her shirking bark she of course gets the others dogs going too. It is indeed very noisy around the house when I try to clean. I usually put Ilsa outside before I start.

I had heard a lot of talk about Thundershirt.

Thundershirt is a lightweight fabric cloth that you wrap around your dog. It is available in many sizes to be able to accommodate all sizes of dogs.
The logic behind what it does makes total sense to me. The concept is like a mother taking her baby in her arms and holding tight to comfort them. Surround your dog with a BIG hug.

I am not going to tell you that it was a 100% cure for my Vlad and Ilsa but it was a tremendous improvement. Vlad no longer feels the need to jump in the bathtub when it thunders. And my Ilsa just barks a bit when I first drag out the vacuum, I actually think it is now more out of habit than of being scared.

I have no excuse now not to use the vacuum cleaner.

I highly recommend Thundershirt for your anxious dog.

Thundershirt is available in the size you need for your dog at Entirely Pets... where I buy all of my pet products.

I love to watch the birds. There is just something about them that is so soothing and relaxing.

I just put in the birdbath heater last week to get ready for the winter months ahead. We have birds all year round, my bird feeding stations change with the seasons. I always enjoy watching them no matter what time of year it is. Summer birds may travel south for warmer weather but I always have birds at my feeder.

This past summer we had more humming birds than we had ever had before. They are such a dainty bird. I have several humming bird feeders but they seem to like the little ones much better than the bigger one that I have. Even though I had to fill the little ones more often, it was worth it.

I always washed my feeders before I refilled them. Sugar water gets very sticky and in the heat of summer you can risk it getting yucky. I wash my feeders in hot soapy water, it only takes a few minutes and you will be rewarded for taking care of your little feathered friends.

You can buy pre-made humming bird food but I make my own sugar water. It is very simple to do. It is a 4 to 1 ratio of water to sugar. 4parts water/1part sugar. Bring water to a boil, add sugar.. stir till dissolved and let cool. I make mine using 6 cups of water at a time. I store the remainder in the refrigerator. A screw cap plastic soda bottle works great for this.

Bird feeders make wonderful gift for birthdays, Christmas… or just because. You can start attracting birds to your yard no matter what time of year it is.

My humming birds are gone for the winter, and I have packed those feeders away till next year. I now seem to be getting more woodpeckers, who just love suet. Of course my very favorite bird, the Tufted Titmouse is with me all year around as well as many others.

This site has a wonder selection of bird feeders. Your birds are just waiting for you to put up a feeder for them.

I am sure you will enjoy them as much as I do.

Meet Molly
She’s a grey speckled pony who was abandoned by her
owners when Hurricane Katrina hit southern Louisiana .
She spent weeks on her own before finally being rescued
and taken to a farm where abandoned animals were stockpiled.
While there, she was attacked by a pit bull terrier and almost died.
Her gnawed right front leg became infected, and her vet went
to LSU for help, but LSU was overwhelmed,
and this pony was a welfare case
You know how that goes.

But after surgeon Rustin Moore met Molly, he changed his mind.
He saw how the pony was careful to lie down on different sides
so she didn’t seem to get sores,
how she allowed people to handle her.
She protected her injured leg.
She constantly shifted her weight
and didn’t overload her good leg.
She was a smart pony with a serious survival ethic.

Moore agreed to remove her leg below the knee,
and a temporary artificial limb was built.
Molly walked out of the clinic and
her story really begins there.

‘This was the right horse and the right owner,’ Moore insists.
Molly happened to be a one-in-a-million patient.

She’s tough as nails, but sweet, and she was willing
to cope with pain.
She made it obvious she understood that she was
in trouble. The other important factor, according
to Moore , is having a truly committed and compliant
owner who is dedicated to providing the daily care
required over the lifetime of the horse.

Molly’s story turns into a parable for life in Post-Katrina Louisiana ..
The little pony gained weight, and her mane finally felt a comb.
A human prosthesis designer built her a leg.
The prosthetic has given Molly a whole new life,

Allison Barca DVM, Molly’s regular vet, reports.
And she asks for it. She will put her little limb out,
and come to you and let you know that she wants
you to put it on. Sometimes she wants you to take
it off too. And sometimes, Molly gets away from Barca.
‘It can be pretty bad when you can’t catch a three-legged horse,’ she laughs.

Most important of all, Molly has a job now. Kay,
the rescue farm owner, started taking Molly to
shelters, hospitals, nursing homes, and rehabilitation
centers. Anywhere she thought that people needed
hope. Wherever Molly went, she showed people
her pluck. She inspired people, and she had a
good time doing it.
‘It’s obvious to me that Molly had a bigger role to
play in life, Moore said. She survived the hurricane,
she survived a horrible injury, and now she is giving
hope to others.’ Barca concluded, ‘She’s not back to normal,
but she’s going to be better. To me, she could be a symbol
for New Orleans itself.

This is Molly’s most recent prosthesis.
The bottom photo shows the ground surface that she stands on,
which has a smiley face embossed in it.
Wherever Molly goes, she leaves a smiley hoof print behind.

God’s creatures often reflect the character we aspire to.
