Federal Elevator, Inc. is assisting Philadelphia’s IUEC Local 5 to provide residential lifts in the homes of United States Military Veterans across the country.

A LIFT FOR A VET purchases, installs, and maintains vertical transportation systems in the homes of disabled military veterans at no cost to the deserving recipient. Federal Elevator owner, Rich Bilancia, works alongside the charitable organization donating his time and knowledge to purchase the equipment and provide engineering and permits.

A LIFT FOR A VET’s mission is to provide the means to an independent lift to as many deserving Veterans as possible. The organization considers the project a small thank you for the dedication and service to our nation.

The organization’s most recent project will be for Marine Special Operations Officer, Derek Herrera, who was paralyzed on June 14, 2012 while conducting combat operations in Afghanistan. Herrera was shot in the spine while leading his team on patrol. A LIFT FOR A VET and Federal Elevator learned about the case from Renovating Hope, a non-profit organization assisting America’s heroes in need.

Despite living in San Clemente California, A LIFT FOR A VET welcomed the opportunity to assist Herrera who is looking to become the first paraplegic Marine allowed to remain on active duty. The lift will be installed by IUEC, Local 18 from Los Angeles.

A LIFT FOR A VET has installed other devices in homes of our Veterans; however, these project can only continue with tax-deductible contributions. For more information on this program, contact Rich Bilancia at 732-458-5522.

Federal Elevator, Inc. is pleased to announce they will be donating a residential elevator to Shore 2 Recover for their project with the Pirl Family of Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey. We are truly honored to have the opportunity to work with Shore 2 Recover.

Shore 2 Recover is a non-profit charity formed in 2012 after the devastation of Hurricane Sandy. The group, formed by local residents, is focused on restoring and rebuilding the Jersey Shore from Point Pleasant Beach to Seaside Park and beyond. The group has adopted the Pirl Family, who have been forced to demolish and rebuild a raised home. The elevator will allow, Caitlyn Pirl, a 24-year old woman who suffered a traumatic brain injury and is paralyzed due to a car accident in 2008 caused by a drunk driver, the freedom leave her home and continue her extensive physical therapy program.

Technicians from Federal Elevator, Inc. will volunteer their time and trade skills to install the elevator. We will be working on the project with many local contractors also donating their time and materials to the family. A sign posted in front of the site shows everyone working on the project.

November 10th through November 16th is the Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation’s annual National Safety Week. We’ll be highlighting several safety tips throughout the week.

In researching different safety tips to highlight, we came across an outstanding article from the Los Angeles Times which presented several important ideas to remember while using elevator and escalator equipment during the busy holiday shopping season. Here are a few of the most important tips:

On elevators…

* Allow passengers exiting the elevator to clear before boarding

* Watch your step – the elevator car may not be perfectly level with the floor

*Once on board, quickly press the button for your floor and move to the back of the car to make room for other passengers

On escalators…

* Watch the direction of the moving step and step on and off with extra care

* Hold children firmly with one arm or hold child’s free hand

* Don’t hesitate and step off promptly

For the entire Los Angeles Times article, go to http://www.latimes.com/features/aranet/living/ara-8074660303-20131018,0,5804799.adstory#axzz2iSIspgke

This morning, the new passenger elevator at the PATCO Station location on Ferry Avenue, Camden, New Jersey will be placed into service for riders. The elevator is part of a three-car project for the transit system’s accessibility improvements.

Elevator construction at Ferry Avenue began earlier this year in conjunction with AP Construction (Blackwood, New Jersey). The new elevator meets PATCO’s high-standard for quality, reliable equipment. Hydraulics for the new system were supplied by American Crescent Elevator Manufacturing Corporation (Picayune, Mississippi). The stainless steel and glass cabs were provided by Gunderlin, Ltd., Inc. (Hialeah, Florida). Innovation Industries, Inc. (Russellville, Arkansas) provided signal fixtures and the elevator controls were manufactured by Virginia Controls (Richmond, Virginia). FEDERAL ELEVATOR, INC. would like to thank our vendors for their support throughout this portion of the project. Here is a look at the finished equipment, shortly before Final Inspection.
