Fedor Emelianenko competed extensively during his earlier years strictly in the Judo circuit. There had been no thought of even advancing on to something else until much later. Judo is a wonderful Martial Art, meaning “gentle way”. A person studying Judo is taught to subdue ones opponent through peaceful means, not through violent or physically damaging methods. Grappling is heavily employed in this art. Throwing the opponent out of the circle, making them submit or joint locking them are some of the very few tactics a Judo student will develop.

Fedor was content with this, focusing his studies on his grappling techniques to improve his chance of a successful bout in the Judo circuit. However, living in Russia also brought the opportunity to study Sambo, which is strictly a self defense art, again not focusing on aggressive violence, but employing what is needed without the use of weapons. If violence must be met with violence, then it can be employed, but it is not meant to be used violently on the streets. There are several different forms of Sambo, basically focusing on the purpose the student is wishing to employ. Self defense, sport and combat Sambo are just a few.

Emelianenko had a good idea picking up these two arts. Judo taught him fluidity in submitting his opponent, Sambo taught him the more aggressive side of fighting, but both maintained that he use his knowledge wisely, not to simply batter people,” just because”.

It wasn’t until 2000 that Fedor really began the career he is in now and it was only because of financial difficulties that even considered going into a far more competitive and violent sport than Judo. Judo had been his focus, and he enjoyed it, but he did not earn much. Earning a bronze medal in the Russian Judo Championship, moving on to something else was always on his mind. Following the Judo Championship, Fedor began training in Striking and kicking with Alexander Vasilievich Michkov, a professional boxing/kickboxing coach.

Fedor began his mixed martial arts career when he became a part of the Russian Top Team, which happened just after he earned his title of “Master of Sports”. However, after winning Pride Heavy weight Championship in 2003, the leaders of RTT (Russian Top Team) became agitated with Fedor’s victories outside of Russian soil and attempted to control him and his brother through uses of threats to take away is “Master of Sports” title. The brother had no patience for this, they left R.T.T. and began training with the Red Devil Sport club in St. Petersburg, with whom he still trains to this day.

Emelianenko has an incredible Record, 29 wins, 1 loss. Of these 29 wins, 6 were from a knockout, 16 were by submission and 7 were made by a decision. His one loss was due to an injury he sustained in a previous fight, forfeiting him from the fight. In 2000, at the Kings of Kings Block B event, he fought Japanese Tsuyoshi Kohsaka, whom accidently hit him over his left eye after missing a punch. This opened up a wound that required the doctor to call a stoppage on the fight. Fedor didn’t forget this, in 2005, Fedor beat Tsuyoshi by technical knockout in the first round when the doctor called an end to the fight, and Tsuyoshi was indeed in a world of pain.

Fedor Emelianenko hasn’t grown up, he has evolved. Fedor has spent his training life focusing on every single weakness that he knows of to became the winner he wants to be. To know what it is to succeed is something Fedor has become familiar with. Fedor Emelianenko is the W.A.M.M.A. world champion because he wanted it, he trained hard and he earned it. Fedor is a shining example of setting goals and training to obtain them. He has successfully improved where he wants and overcome every area that needed improvement, finishing with his Muay Thai training that he began in 2005 after realizing he desperately needed to improve his kicking techniques.

Throughout his training he has endured countless comments and criticism about where he needs to be, what he needs to improve. Fedor has taken these opinions and turned them around, formed them into his source of inspiration; allowing him to become more than what people think of him. Even his own trainer, Vasilev, was aware of Emelianenko downfalls, and made him aware of them. The only thing these facts did was to make him a modest person, aware of strength, but also aware of his humanity. He isn’t the fighter type to walk around and mind submit people, staring at them to intimidate, prove their strength without violence, Fedor is just a person, a fighter, but a person.

Throughout his fighting career, he has juggled a multitude of things, school, military, a family. He has managed to maintain all of this, and although he is not always successful, he tries. In 1999, at the age of 22, he married Oksana, his girlfriend of many years. In the same year Oksana gave birth to their first child, Masha. Fedor had everything, a good job he enjoyed very much, a loving wife and beautiful baby girl. He did his best to maintain everything at once. They were a happy family, but with time and Fedor dedication to his fighting, his relationship with Oksana eroded and in 2006, he ended his relationship with her. Fedor did not wait long; he almost immediately began his new family with his current girlfriend Marina, who gave birth to his second child, Vasilisa, in 2007. A special name for a special reason, his second daughter is his pride and joy and he was more than happy to honor first his trainer with naming his daughter after him.

Fedor is a man of common sense, he knows what he needs and he gets it, for him it is obvious were his improvements lay. His team of is a reflection of his ideal training environment. Consisting of 6 professionals; His Grappling coach Voronov, Muay Thai coach Ruslan Nagnibeda, His personal doctor, a maseusse, even a psychologist when needed. His team also consists of his two training partners Roman Zenstov and, until mid-2006, his brother Aleksander.

Fedor makes mistake, he is aware of it, he knows he is not perfect, but maybe that subtle sense of self is what makes him so popular in the fighting circuits.

As is it often mentioned, Fedor Emelianenko didn’t start out a prize fighter, he worked for it, long and hard. Doubted even by his trainer, who had a hunch, but given Fedor’s physical dimensions, it simply didn’t seem possible. Fedor has proved everyone wrong. Looking at a picture, one could easily assume that he is slow, by no means the fighter type. Fedor’s demeanor alone would throw you off, he is modest and kind, you couldn’t detect much of a fighter in him at all. Many mention that he is a great guy, but they also quickly mention that he is focused and diligent. Fedor Emelianenko is a champion because his shortcomings were mentioned at an early age that he started early working to overcome them. He became better in all areas, he evolved.

A person can’t imagine that a child at the tender age of ten would ever be so aggressively involved into something that they became violent, good, he wasn’t like that either. Fedor was normal kid, a normal kid with a few extra obstacles. Born in an area with not much hope of a fruitful future, Fedor had few options for being successful; his father was a steel worker and his mother was a teacher, both common jobs, but he simply didn’t want that, it wasn’t enough.

At every moment in Fedor champion development, he took the advantage of making himself better. In all aspects of life, Fedor became the person he is today, a good friend, a loving father and a respected winner.

Grappling was immediately noted as a huge weakness for Fedor, he simply couldn’t get the positions down. The grappling techniques he was taught in Judo were not so difficult; he just lacked the proper physical strength in the right areas to achieve them effectively. His coach at the time did not have the proper experience to teach him those areas, so after a warm separation from his very first coach and trainer, he began working with Vladimir Mihailovich Voronov, a professional trainer and mentor focused in grappling. Identifying his weakness in grappling almost at first site, Voronov knew that he had work ahead of him, but Fedor motivation shined bright and Voronov could see the potential waiting to be released.

Shortly after Fedor received the Bronze in the Russian Judo Championship in 1998, Fedor moved onto developing his striking techniques with trainer Alexander Vasilievich Michkov. Fedor, in 2000, began competing in mixed martial arts and combat Sambo and mixed martial arts not so much that he wanted to “show off” but only because, at that time, he, “didn’t have any money”. Who would have known it was because of his financial situation that he really became who he is today.

Fedor is dedicated to his training, even more than most in his class. Because of attraction to training, Fedor is identified as a champion, the greatest champion in the world, pound for pound. He follows his heart and it has helped him to evolve into Fedor “The Last Emperor” Emelianenko.

Fedor Emelianenko started at an early age when it came to fighting, he wasn’t the violent sort, but he was always interested in fighting as an art. With the advent of Judo and the development of Sambo, those were clearly his two best choices. Sambo (Cambo), a Russian modern martial art, is a Russian acronym for “Self defence without weapons. Developed as a form of self defence and a sport, it was recognized in 1938 by the USSR all sports committee. Fedor’s interest in Judo was based on his Japanese roots and well known form of martial art. At a young age of ten, Fedor enlisted himself in the first of his training sessions, altering his path into a future full of respect and honour, formed by style and strength.

Quoted by his first teacher as being frail and underdeveloped for the sport, Fedor never gave up. He was always the type that knew what challenges laid ahead of him and never let doubt win. He attended High school like every other child and graduated without problems. During his primary education, Fedor never let his training interfere with his school work, thus showing his dedication to education and aptitude on top in every area of his life. Following high school, Fedor graduated from a professional trade school knowing that if his fighting were to end, he would always have something to fall back on.

Fedors’ training is and was non-stop, whenever he had free time and had finished his schoolwork, he would be off running or training himself to become the best of the best. Obviously aware of his trainers doubts and recognition of his weaknesses, Fedor knew what he needed to focus on, from 1995-1997, during Fedors period in the Russian Military, was stayed focused on his training goals and took advantage of his Military fire fighting role, he lifted weights and ran as often as could. Many had thought that he continued his training as usual while in the military, but his options were limited while serving his country, he made the best of what little he had. The period Fedor spent showed that he was loyal to his country, proud, but also that he was dedicated to his profession and his perseverance was without limited.

In 1997, Fedors endeavours paid off, he was recognized with the title of “Master of sports” in Sambo and Judo, at only 20 years old. Training 2 - 3 times a day was commonplace, simply wanting to maintain and improve his skills to become the person so many doubted that he was capable of. Fedor uses traditional methods, nothing advanced, to improve his skills. The jump rope is one of his favourite, improving his focus, increasing his coordination, and it was fun too. During his military stint, he used weights often, but after his designation of “Master of Sports” he exchanged most of the heavy weights for sport oriented training, e.g. wrestling, boxing and kickboxing.

A tough fighter, Fedor is also very modest, although he is recognized as one of the best fighters in the world, he sees himself as just being good, and not the best, but “good” for his weight class, but good is an understatement.

Often, when a person mentions the name Fedor Emelianenko, that gets a, ”huh” or “who” response. It is without question that he is not so well known in the general publics’ eyes, but that is where his anonymity ends. W.A.M.M.A (World Alliance of Mixed Martial Arts) champion, Fedor is famous in the market of martial arts fighting. His reputation was quickly established after defeating his opponent, Former U.F.C. (Ultimate Fighting Championship) and PRIDE champion Tim Sylvia in just 36 seconds, making him the first W.A.M.M.A World Heavyweight champion.

Born 1976 in the Luhansk Oblast region of the Ukrainian province of the Soviet Union, Fedor was raised in a traditional sized family of six, including one older sister and two younger brothers. Raised by mother, a teacher, and his father, a steel worker, Fedor was brought up in a harsh region, plagued by common rivalries and neighborly competition. Because of these challenges, Fedor became aware of his weaknesses and beginning at the very young age of ten, Fedor became intrigued with the Sambo and Judo art forms.

Fedor began his training young, it is even noted by his trainer that Fedor was frail, but his initial trainer, Vasiliy Ivanovich Gavrilov, worked with him to develop what talents he had. His current trainer, Vladimir Mihailovich Voronov, made it clear that he was still physically weak and lacked the much needed grappling skills, but he also recognized his desire to succeed and applauded his perseverance. Fedor’s strong will is what guided and pushed him to become the champion that he is today. His perseverance also attracted the attention of his younger brother, Aleksander Emelianenko, who today is also training, but at a different level than his elder brother.

After graduating with honors in 1994 from a professional trade school, Fedor took a short break and continued his training. His interests stretched into many areas, when not training, Fedor entertained himself with his favorite hobbies: listening to music, reading and drawing on occasion. Fedor, from 1995-1997, served as a military firefighter in the Russian Army. During his stint in the military, he was unable to continue his training although he was able to maintain a strict running and lifting regime using his homemade weight set. This did not add to his Sambo or his Judo skill training but it did further improve his strength and he gained increased endurance.

In 1997, Emelianenko received his “Master” designation in the Sambo and Judo art and became part of the Russian National team. Emelianenko toured with the team for over 18 months competing in both national and international prize fighting events.

Upon completion of his tour with the national Sambo and Judo team, and after a long romance, he finally married his girlfriend Oksana; a short time after their marriage, their first daughter Masha was born. With so many fights and appearances to maintain his reputation, Fedor realized he wasn’t holding on to the relationship with his wife and after a rocky seven relationship, Fedor ended his marriage. Currently, Fedor is living his new life with his new family, Marina and Vasilisa, born December, 2007.

Fedor had this to say on the announcement, “I have been blessed with great success in my career and I’m excited to work with another company that also is similar drive,” says Emelianenko. “BEST is leading the industry in innovative branding for their clients and I am confident that they will assist me in reaching the next level.” BEST Executive VP Dennis Spencer had this to say, “We look forward to building his (Fedor) marketability and presence within the United States and abroad as he defends his position at the top spot.”

Fedor recently beat former UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia at Affliction’s inaugural show called “Banned” and was rumored to be facing Andrei Arlovski in his first title defense, but will miss the second Affliction event “Day of Reckoning” due to a lingering hand injury.

Apparently Fedor Emelianenko’s departure from the one-and-done M-1 Global promotion - who co-promoted last year’s “Yarennoka!” event in Japan with former PRIDE and current DREAM runners FEG - didn’t kill talks for the much discussed reality show wherein prospects would duke it out for the chance to face the Russian heavyweight. According to a press release issued today, “Fighting Fedor” is still very much alive and will appear before the end of the year.

It would be great to see this series come to fruition, if only to produce some kind of compelling fight for Fedor against an opponent he can actually face, and to get a glimpse inside the RDFC. But I’m gonna say I’ll believe it when I see it. BEST apparently has only three MMA clients: Emelianenko, UFC light heavyweight Houston Alexander and Gegard Mousasi, who will compete in the final round of DREAM’s Middleweight Grand Prix next month.

As for the M-1 Challenge shows, those seem a little more likely and - if the number of shows (22!) is accurate - even more exciting.

WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelieanenko will be healed from his recent hand injury in time to compete by New Years Eve, reports Sports Illustrated.

“I think definitely by New Year’s Eve I’ll be ready to go,” Emelianenko told SI. “My desire at this point is to meet with the winner of the fight [between Arlovski and Barnett], but I still have a desire to fight with whomever loses as well.”

Emelianenko was to fight former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arloski in the headline bout of Affliction 2 on October 11th but was forced off the card due to a lingering hand injury re-aggravated in his first-round submission victory over former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia in July. Emelianenko was ultimately replaced by Josh Barnett and the winner of the main event matchup will take on “The Last Emperor” for the WAMMA title down the road, but not on a potential New Year’s Eve card.

Recent rumors about Emelienanko’s next opponent centered on a rematch with PRIDE and UFC veteran Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic but, according to the report, Emelianenko will instead fight a “judo legend or sumo wrestler” at the New Year’s Eve event.
