As a follow-up to the violent mantis vs. monarch butterfly struggle witnessed in my driveway last month, my sister-in-law sent me this from a recent National Geographic issue: Mantis vs. Hummingbird. A quick googling and it seems that this is a common battle in nature!

Was talking with my sister-in-law yesterday and she gave me the update on my 4-year-old nephew’s new turtle, Henry (or Henrietta as it may turn out) - a near-road-kill rescue by her husband. I threatened to send my nephew a paint and decal turtle decoration kit.

Album of the Day: The Knack - Get The Knack

Was at long-time-Feed-The-Ogre-friend Lester’s house a while back and “My Sharona” came on his mix on the back deck. There was a one-hit-wonder comment and I defended the honor of the entire “Get The Knack” album. I made him a copy and just heard from him today:

While I had listened to it w/ half an ear shortly after you passed it along, I had some quality time alone in my car w/ my iPod yesterday and gave it a good once over after a long day. Totally sweet and great driving music.

This is one of those quintessential summer albums for me. It’s best listened to riding the handlebars or book rack on your friend’s beach cruiser on the streets of Ocean City, NJ at the age of 15 or 16.

But I guess your cubicle will do as well.

It’s hard to pick my favorite tracks but will go with:

The home garden is coming along nicely this year compared to the weedy disaster of last year. This here’s a recent zucchini blossom. Need to harvest some of these blossoms to lightly batter and fry up. The Mrs’ grandmother showed us that years ago and have been meaning to try it.

My roommate, the Strapper back in the 80s, turned me on to Miracle Legion. Nice to see Mark Mulcahy get his tribute and for a good cause — raising funds for his single parenthood after the sudden death of his wife last fall.
