Being the carnivores that we are, we just can’t resist a good steak. We’ve heard much about the steaks here so for this dinner, we made a trip to Prime at Le Meridien.

It is a fine setting with bright lights above that shine like starts in the sky. The large seats are plush and very comfortable, although it does feel like a fit for a giant. The wood finishes add a nice touch to the ambiance of the restaurant with it’s prompt service.

To start things off, you are served a plate of warm bread. Interestingly enough, they also serve it with their homemade butters which whet your appetite before the main dish arrives.

Before we jump right into the meat, you can also order side dishes to accompany your steak. We felt slightly guilty and ordered a bowl of creamy spinach and butter (not to say that this was much healthier, but having a side of greens is always good ).

Anyways, here is our main course in all it’s glory, their signature dish, The Wagyu Prime Rib! Served with Idaho steak fries potato, wild mushroom fricassee and a light black summer truffle jus, you’d best share this for two or more. If you are a big meat eater, then it is for two, but if your partner does not eat as much, then this may be an overdose of meat (in a good way) . The meat was lightly marbled and every cut revealed the tenderness of the meat. I like to have my steaks natural and found this to be done rather well, would have liked darker char marks on my steak though. The juices are sealed in the steak and released with every bite.

I have to say that most of us tend to have at least two stomachs, one for the mains and one for desserts. Even after all that meat, we still had to end it off with something sweet. Scanning through the menu, we picked out the tiramisu. It was infused in a lot of alcohol which overwhelmed the taste. They did use a lot of marscapone cheese though which was very evident from the thickness of the dessert.

Prime

This restaurant is actually an izakaya, roughly translated, Japanese drinking establishment which also serves food’.

You can find their menu on the wall by the entrance. Its not your typical Japanese restaurant with your usual set menus but a more ala carte type of Japanese restaurant. You get to sample a different variety of Japanese food like robatayaki as they have a long menu for that which you don’t find in most Jap places.

When seated you are treated to an appetizer ( on the house by the way), which was fresh chinese cabbage with a side of dipping sauce. Who would have thought cabbage would make a starter for a meal. But it tasted pretty good surprisingly. The cabbage was very fresh and the dip tasted like combination of Japanese soy sauce and the sweet popiah sauce. Sounds weird, but it didn’t taste too bad.

For starts we tried some of their appetizers. We had the sake maki which was their salmon avocado roll, Enoki Maki (golden straw mushrooms wrapped in beef and grilled) and their poteto sarada (potato salad). It was quite enjoyable, though it would be nice if the portions were bigger.

I tried their kamo sansai soba. Kamo is duck in Japanese. The broth used for this dish was very very tasty to the point where I wanted to finish the broth as well. It’s addictive I must warn you. It’s a dish I would relate to as comfort food.

We also tried the Tori Katsu Curry, basically Japanese curry with udon noodles. The curry was very thick, abit too thick for my liking but William begs to differ. He quite enjoyed this dish. It comes with your katsu (breaded chicken) on the side. He finished everything..;)

This is a nice place to come to if you are looking for a light Japanese snack. Alot of snacks and appetizers to choose from and a very interesting starter.

Anyways, here is what we had for lunch. In a thick, and lightly sweet sauce, was a plate full of tofu, fish cakes, stuffed chilies and other goodies.

The speciality here which we do particularly enjoy is the Chee Bao Gai or Paper Wrapped Chicken. Hidden inside the layers of paper is chicken engulfed in a thick gravy. There is a taste of ginger, chinese wine and sweet soy sauce which is infused into the tender portions of chicken.

We also had a taste of some fish slices which always go well with a bowl of rice.

We were invited to sample the delectable Ramadhan buffet feast in Cinnamon Coffee house at One World Hotel again. I always look forward to going to Cinnamon’s buffet because I know I will not be disappointed by the spread as well as the quality of food. This year, once again, we were once again impressed by the variety they have prepared. With a diverse menu of over 100 dishes all in favour of the Citarasa 1 Malaysia Theme. Various stalls tempting you with local malay, chinese, indian and international cuisine. It really is a feast for the eyes and palate.

Above is the picture of the chefs who’s labour of love we were sampling that night. Job well done guys. As you can see, they really do follow the theme of citarasa 1 Malaysia as they have an Indian, Chinese and Malay chef to help cater to our tastebuds.

Start off your buka puasa with a huge range of dates as well as traditional Malay dishes to open your palate. There’s just so many to chose from. Some of the dishes they had that day was rendang daging rembau, ketam goreng berlada pontian, udang sambal petai muar, kambing kari teluk gong, nasi beriani gam johor, mee bandung, laksa kedah…just to name a few. The list is too long.

The roast lamb was one of the first things that caught my eye when entering the restaurant. Look at the sheer size of it! At first glance, I seriously thought it was a camel. The lamb was ‘crispy’ on the outside, but the meat inside was really juicy. You can eat it with the briyani rice on the side and roast vegetables.

Then there was the ‘wall’ of cheeses. It was basically a plastic wall with lots of spoons sticking out of it, and on each spoon is a little something made either from cheese or a mousse. I tried the pink one which was cream cheese infused with dragon fruit. It’s a very unique taste and not as heavy as I thought it to be. They also had squid ink pasta which you can customize with the type of pasta sauce you want.

There is also the ‘ steamed’ section, where you can get fresh ingredients to put boil in your steamboat or dim sum. Be careful when you take the items from the dim sum rack as that steam is pretty hot. The items on the dim sum rack that day was steamed sweet corn and pau.

One of my personal favourites, the Japanese section with the never ending replenishment of sashimi, sushi and tempura. All done fresh before your eyes. The sashimi and sushi is of course at the highest quality and the freshness of the food they use here is undeniable.

Not forgetting dessert of course. You must try the little pancake wrapped custard here ( I can’t recall it’s exact name). But its basically custard wrapped in pancake and is done on the spot. I loved it. They have so much dessert that if I were to put all the pictures up, it will just go on and on. Other desserts they had were tau fu fah, bubur lambuk, apam balik……

So if you are looking for a place with an international and local spread, do come by to Cinnamon Coffehouse for their Ramadhan buffet. It’s definitely not to be missed. You can also try their ramadhan specials at the chinese restaurant Zuan Yuan and their bbq buffet by the pool bar.

We were here for their mooncakes and what a treat we were in store for.

Each set of mooncakes comes in a beautifully decorated box. The designs are created in house and some may even want to buy the mooncakes just for the boxes themselves.

Look at that, it even comes with its own cutlery! Ready to eat!

With the theme Double Indulgence, they offer two categories of mooncakes: Classic and their all-new contemporary flavours such as Pumpkin Taro and German Black Forest.

We weren’t just here for the mooncakes as we got to sample some of the dishes available at the Golden Phoenix Restaurant. After some welcome speeches from Mr. Balam, the Director of Business Development and our very own William, Master Chef Ng gave us a short description of what was in store for us.

To start things off, we each were served a piping hot bowl of Ginseng Chicken Soup and Fook Lou Chou Fan. I particularly enjoyed the Ginseng Chicken Soup which had been cooked for many hours. The flavours of the chicken, herbs, and ginseng had clearly infused into the soup.

After many pulls and wows from the crowd, the noodles clearly emerged from what seemed to be an easy feat, until the contestants came up to try it themselves.

The La Mien demonstration seemed easy enough, just knead the noodle base, and pull. Three lucky contestants made their way to the front of the room to give it a go.

I guess it wasn’t quite as easy as it looked, but everyone had a great time. Getting the strength of the pull and timing was essential. There were screams of encouragement from the crowd, and eventually, the noodles did take shape. Can you guess where they made the noodles from this Spicy Eggplant La Mien?

Together with the La Mien was a sumptuous Scallop with Mango and vegetable dish. I have to say that the scallops that we had were extra large!

We still had to make room for dessert at the end of the day, which was quite difficult for some after such a big feast. Of course, as food bloggers, we have a second stomach saved just for dessert. This is a very cooling dessert. A coconut drink served with gui ling gao (herbal jelly).

The next dessert would appeal to many Malaysians and this Durian Pancake melts in your mouth. Absolutely delicious and one of the highlights of the day for me. The soft pastry instantly melts in your mouth and the durian mixture is creamy and smooth.

All in all, it was a great event and we have to thank the organisers and the hotel for putting on a successful event!

Kissaten has an interesting variety of meals available on their menu. From sandwiches and salads to Chicken Kway Teow Soup to Char Siew Pizzas. An interesting combination isn’t it?

In Japanese, a Kissaten is a Japanese style coffee shop. In Japan there is a distinct difference between cafes (kaafe) and kissaten. The design and atmosphere of kaafe is usually aimed at younger people or women, whereas kissaten are small, older establishments.

Here in Kissaten, you find both young and old enjoying the food and drink.

We decided to go with the Teriyaki Pork Buger which was oozing with sauce and dripping all over. This was a mouthful and we had to chop it in half to somehow squeeze this tower of a burger in. It would have been nice to have it with a side of french fries.

A recommended dish that the staff suggested was the Char Siew pizza. Yes, I did say Char Siew pizza. From the picture you can see that it is drizzled doused in mayonnaise and it rather sweet too. There was a subtle hint of char siew which seemed to be overpowered by the mayonnaise. I thought it was an interesting pizza which one should try at least once.

Rich Choco Pudding. Need I say more? I would recommend that you share this dessert as it really is rich, as the name suggests.

We had the pleasure to be invited again to the Atrium cafe sunway resort hotel to get a preview of the upcoming ramadhan buffet that they will showcase from 9th August to 10th Sept.

The theme for the buffet is ‘ A feast of Ramadan arond the world’. A very fitting theme I must add seeing that they had a wide variety of food (over 100 dishes) from various part of the globe.

The hotel offers you a large selection of choices as you walk through the ‘live’ food stalls they have lined up. They have different sections of the buffet, each section aptly named after the food served. They had moroccon, iranian, Malay, Chinese, Indian, Western. You will be spoilt for choice.

We tried the Turkish chicken kebabs, straight from the spit. It was flavourful, and quite tender. Other dishes that is a must try would be the Prawn Tandoori, roasted duck ‘pi pak’ ,ketam goreng berempah and laksa johor. It was quite interesting to see the live cooking done in front of you, as you can see exactly how your food is prepared.

There are ample deserts available for those with a sweet tooth, including a full chocolate fountain and many local kuih-muih and even western cakes and pastries.

The selection at The Atrium Cafe will leave you spoilt for choice this fasting month.
