Jennifer who attends Ridge Point Community Church has served her neighbors and the local community in many different ways. She credits the wonderful people in Zeeland for encouraging her vision, helping her step out in faith and fulfilling her destiny.

You can learn more about Jenny's story from her blog ,

http://jennysjourneythruafrica.blogspot.com

a message from Jenny:

Dear Friends , Neighbors, and Love Ones;

I remember the moment when I was 13 years old when I heard HIM call me to Africa, It was a still, small voice and yet so very powerful it still rings like thunder into the very core of who I am. Although my life's journey has taken me from place to place I cannot abandon this stronghold of my soul.

Africa, a place of death and poverty, a landscape scattered with bones of the dead and yet HE calls me to a people that cry out to HIM for compassion and mercy. How can I not submit to this yearning that has been within me for years? If I abandon this longing, surely I will die. I am consumed with this passion for faces I have not seen and a people I do not know.

I humbly come to you to help me fulfill this calling that burns within me. I am willing to go to a place of poverty knowing full well that my eyes will see things that are unspeakable. My arms cannot wait to hold the HIV/AID child who no one wants and that has been left for dead and I will smooth its fevered brow.

To be able to get to where I need to go to and hold that child I feel I must go to Iris Harvest School of Missionaries in Mozambique, Africa where I will be trained in the ways of the people of the countries I will be entering into too. The school starts October 12th
2009 and I am in need of much prayer to see that my feet touch the soil of Africa.

I promise not to fail you and that of The Lord Jesus Christ.

Allow me to show you the faces of those who draw me away to a place of delightful passion for the LORD. You are invited to

A CELEBRATION OF HIS CALLING TO AFRICA

To be held on Saturday October 3 2009
At The Baert Baron Mansion
Between the hours of 6:00 & 9:00 p.m.
Hor d oeuvres & Refreshment will be served

RSVP Jennifer Hamm at (616) 212-6533

Showcase for Local Jewelry Artist, Anna VanDeventer

YT Galleria in Grand Rapids will be featuring local Zeeland artist Anna Karen VanDeventer and her jewelry line "The Baroness" in the annual "Celebration On Cherry" in Grand Rapids Michigan that kicks off at 6:00 p.m. Thursday October 1st 2009 with food, wine, fashion, and music. I could not be more proud of each and every one of these boys."

Because of their success and more so the way that this team represented Zeeland throughout these two grueling tournaments, they will be this year's honorary marshalls at the Pumkinfest parade.

Go Zeeland!

Left to right:

Kneeling - Coby Curtiss, Brady Twentyman

First Row - Jason Rennick, Trevor Ter Haar, Matt Van Dyken, Cooper Kilinski, Drew Hart, Tyler Brouwer, Dakota Geurink, Zach De Witt, Chase Medendorp

Back Row - Manager Joe Rennick, Coach Trent Ter Haar, Levi Nelesen, Derek Jacobs, Coach Steve De Witt

September Home Zweet Home Winners

Cooney Home

Sumrall Home

Disselkoen Home (sorry it's sideways!)

For the month of September, the City recognizes three new recipients of the Home Zweet Home Award. This program celebrates Zeeland residents for making their neighborhoods a beautiful place to live. The City of Zeeland is pleased to name the following residents as the new Home Zweet Home Award winners:

150 W. Lawrence – Mark &Sara Cooney

Recipients were selected based on their beautifully maintained house and yard. All three of these properties can be seen in exceptional condition month after month. It is especially noteworthy to recognize the large scale rear addition and backyard renovation at the Cooney home on the corner of Lawrence and Pine.

The September Home Zweet Home Award Winners will be presented a certificate of recognition by the Mayor at the Zeeland City Council Meeting held on September 21 at 7pm.

This is one recognition program with a lot of Zeel! ZEEL is defined as that passion residents have for living in the City of Zeeland. Of course there are zillions of ways express ZEEL, but the City knows that many residents proudly express ZEEL through commitment to their property; and in Zeeland, that is something to celebrate.

This program is meant to recognize those special citizens that are investing in their home and yard through exterior improvements, attention to landscaping, overall maintenance, or tasteful décor (a.k.a. curb appeal), which increases the overall image and value of the neighborhood.

If you’d like to nominate yourself or your neighbor to receive a Home Zweet Home Award, stop by City Hall and pick up a nomination form or visit us online at http://www.ci.zeeland.mi.us/.

Zeeland's 1st Annual Global-Local Waterfest!!

On Saturday, September 12, Zeeland will host a new, hopefully ongoing festival celebrating water. Zeeland’s 1st Annual Global-Local Water Festival will serve to invite the public to beautiful downtown Zeeland for a fun day of carnival games, prizes, live music, and education about groups that work to provide safe drinking water to the 884 million people around the world who still lack it.

The details and facts regarding the world's undrinkable water, while becoming more and more publicized in the media today, are still largely lost on most people. Consider the following:

. Over 1.8 million children under the age of 5 die each year from chronic diarrhea. (Source: World Health Organization).
. More than 4 million people die each year from diseases related to lack of good hygiene and clean water.
. In the past 10 years, diarrhea has killed more children than all the people lost to armed conflict since World War II.
. Safe drinking water in an impoverished region can save lives, increase productivity and jump start an economy.
. The World Health Organization estimates that 80% of all diseases worldwide result from contaminated water, inadequate sanitation, and poor hygiene.

This festival, which is a mix of small town carnival fun, concert event, and public rally, will serve to bring the community together and invite them to consider the effects of extreme poverty, and the benefits of providing people with safe drinking water and basic sanitation.

The event is organized by 30perperson.org, a new local non-profit organization, which seeks to educate the public and promote mission groups already in existence. Their name is derived from the oft repeated appeal that as little as $9 billion could provide impoverished peoples with sustainable practices of obtaining safe drinking water using water wells, rain gutters, all natural filtering technologies, and basic sanitation practices. Broken down, that number translates to a donation of just $30 from every man, woman and child living in the US.

The event is hosted and supported by many groups who will be in attendance: 30perperson.org, Aqua Clara International, Living Water International, Community Reformed Church, Ambrose Collective, Zeeland Board of Public Works, Water Missions International, Friends of Children's Village, Safe Water In Ecuador and WaterAid. Each group will have a booth which will feature an event or game for kids and takeaway items for parents. This festival marks the first time these groups are working together to host a fun family-friendly event. There will be representatives from each organization speaking briefly in between 8 musical sets from 9am to 3pm. A community drum circle will follow.

The festival is also looking to promote the local businessman as well. With Michigan's unemployment now over 15%, many families are not thinking about what charities their extra money will go to. Encouraging individuals and communities to promote local businesses, services and products helps keep money in Michigan, thus helping to keep jobs within the state. In between the event's eight different music sets, different business owners from the community will introduce themselves and share their gratitude to local shoppers.

Live bands and musicians include Paucity, Left in Berlin, Acoustic Waves, Big Dudee Roo and the Raptors, Mixmatch, Zachary Graft and more.

The event will be on Saturday, September 12, 9am-3pm, on Elm Street between Main Ave and Cherry St in downtown Zeeland.

Zeeland is a small town; itʼs likely you know already that the Zeeland Rotary Club
submitted the cityʼs first application to host an entertainment tent during Pumpkinfest.
Weʼd like to tell you firsthand what the Rotary is up to and to ask for your help.

If youʼve lived here a while you know about Pumpkinfest. Itʼs the three-day festival
Zeeland holds downtown each fall. There are games for kids, pet contests, art
competitions, exhibits, music, lots of sales, and a big parade at the end. A new theme is
chosen every year, and the people really get into the spirit of the thing.

You might be equally familiar with Rotary, a worldwide organization of 1.2 million
business, professional, and community leaders. Rotarians provide humanitarian service,
encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and build goodwill and peace in the
world. Clubs are nonpolitical and open to all cultures, races, and creeds. The Zeeland
Rotary Club, chartered in 1934, is celebrating its 75th Anniversary this year. A milestone
like that demands the club do something original to mark it.

As in past years, Rotary club again will sell Hoytʼs barbecued chicken dinners after
the parade Saturday, October 3rd. Whatʼs new is that, in a large tent near the grill,
Rotary members also will sell glasses of cold beer.

The Rotary plans to mix up this inaugural event with music, too. From 3 to 6 p.m.
the club will offer chicken dinners and beer. At 6 p.m., this part of the festivities will
close. At 6:30 p.m., the tent will reopen, when the club will offer a local live band with the
sale of beer.

All proceeds from the entertainment tent will go toward college scholarships for
area graduates. Over more than a decade, the Zeeland Rotary Club has raised and
awarded more than $100,000, often to students who might not attend college otherwise.

If our application is accepted, this will be the first entertainment tent in Zeeland. It
may be controversial. But after last yearʼs vote to allow alcohol sales, we figure some
group was bound to take advantage of this opportunity. We thought, “Why not the
Rotary?” We have a vested interest to set a precedent how to operate an orderly, funfilled,
friendly event, and the money goes to a good cause.

Look around Zeeland today. New people are moving here, with varied ethnicities,
incomes, and ages. Appropriate to Rotaryʼs mission and Zeelandʼs changing makeup,
we have themed our attraction “Room for You”. We need a dynamic, inclusive event to
celebrate Zeeland now; and, not incidentally, one that has the potential to raise a lot of
money for Zeelandʼs future. Yes, a big tent event!

Maybe writing a check is the easiest way for you to help. To emphasize the
communityʼs support, we are offering sponsorships at different levels: platinum ($1000),
gold ($500), silver ($100), and bronze ($50). These sponsorsʼ names will be displayed
on a banner over the tent and will receive mention in the eventʼs advertising. The Rotary
also would like to sell commemorative t-shirts. As a sponsor, your company would
appear on these shirts, too. (We can also accommodate anonymous support, of course.)

Writing a check is not the only way you might help. We submitted the application to
meet the cityʼs deadline with the assumption that the club could muster community
support afterward, including equipment and labor. Weʼre seeking a distributor to supply
the beer and as many of the other items as are customary. Those items include: a big
tent, a small tent, lighting, plastic fencing, waste and recycling boxes, tables, chairs,
porta-jons, hand-washing sinks, and a stage. Do you have items to loan?

How will you help? Our deadline is Sept 1st. If we do not receive a sufficient
response by that date, we will withdraw our application. Let another group be the first.
But, for a moment, just imagine it: instead of a typical Saturday evening in Zeeland,
when residents leave to seek excitement elsewhere, they flock downtown for excitement.
That would be something! Contact the Zeeland Rotary to discuss any questions or
concerns, and to contribute. We thank you. Zeeland thanks you.

And by all means, save Oct 3rd on your calendar. Weʼd love to meet you under the
big tent!

Sincerely Yours,
Tom Elhart, spokesperson, 396 7788

Geurink, who did not play T-ball, coach pitch or for any team before the 9-10 level, helped bring home the first state championship in Zeeland National's history.
His two-run double in the top of the seventh inning lifted Zeeland to a 6-4 win against North Saginaw in the finals.

Zeeland National had overcome a 4-3 deficit in the top of the sixth inning when Coby Curtiss doubled home Zach De Witt with the tying run. "These 13 guys on the team and the composure they've had -- the honor, the dignity -- that's what made me so proud," Zeeland coach Joe Rennick said. "I told the guys afterward to grow up strong, be men and lead their communities. They should be proud for what they did here today."

At the 9-10 and 10-11 levels in baseball and softball, action concludes at the state tournament level. Other players on the team included: Matt Van Dyken, Derek Jacobs, Jason Rennick, Trevor Ter Haar, Brady Twentyman, Drew Hart, Chase Medendorp, Cooper Kilinski, Tyler Brouwer and Levi Neleson. Trent Ter Haar and Steve De Witt were assistants.

Youth sports roundup 10-11 BASEBALL: At Jackson, Western's 10-11 team edged Birmingham 5-4 in eight innings. It was the third win in four games for Western. "They battled, we battled, it was a great game," Western coach Sam Stulpe said. Tyler Tuttle scored on a passed ball to win the game for Western. Collin Stulpe hit a home run to help aid the pitching of Bruce Buurstra and Christian Falicki, who combined for the win. Western faces Midland Northeast at 5 p.m. Thursday in the semifinals.

Keep in touch

Are you keeping in touch with all of the ZEEL updates?? From 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. tour ten Victorian Homes that are over a century old. This year’s theme is all about quilts so guests will be able to enjoy looking at historical family quilts that mean the world to those who treasure them. A favorite tradition for home tour guests is being able have a complimentary ride in a vintage car to be driven to your next destination and Dutch desserts and drinks throughout the tour for guests to refresh themselves along the way. What has always made this home tour so successful in the past is the fact that there are so many people who come to gather as one and support the cause of restoring historical building in Zeeland, Michigan. This year will feature:

* Musicians and artists will be featured in the homes and gardens for tour guests to enjoy.

* A quilt show will be held on the porch at Parkview .

* Vintage cars that will take tour guests throughout the tour.

*Refreshments to be enjoyed by tour guests at homes.

The Dekker Huis Museum will have its “Good Ole Summer” display in the gallery that brings back memories of what it was like when neighbor’s fellowshipped with each other and no one had ever heard of TVs and game boys.

The real story of the Zeeland Historical Home Tour is not the amount of money that is made at this annual event, but the involvement of the people who come together from all walks of life as one. There are well over 120 people who give of themselves throughout this adventure in many different ways. From gathering homes for the tour, typing stories, baking cookies, cleaning windows to mowing yards, everyone pulls together to bring out the very best that Zeeland, MI has to offer.

Tickets can be purchased at the Zeeland Chamber of Commerce, Zeeland Hardware or Bunte’s Pharmacy for $20.00 each or $22.50 on the day of the tour at Museum.

Homes on Tour in Zeeland:

Steve & Debbie Albert 36 West Central Ave.
Christy & Ken Boeve 125 S. Shredding documents containing personal information, such as account numbers, is an important part of identity protection. All papers will be shredded and recycled by the Shred-It company. There is no need to remove staples or bindings as the machinery is equipped to handle the material.

“We are hosting our event on Earth Day,” said Velvet Fuller AAC Marketing Director.
“What better time to shred and recycle unneeded papers to keep them from going into landfills.”

From 6:00pm – 7:30pm, a free Identity Theft Seminar will also be offered. Attendees will learn about specific types of ID theft and ways to protect personal information.

In the 2006 Federal Trade Commission Identity Theft Survey Report, it was calculated that approximately 8.3 million Americans were victims of identity theft. The median value of goods and services obtained by identity thieves was $500, while 10% of victims reported over $6,000 in fraud.

“Identity theft awareness is an important topic. Thieves are getting more sophisticated in their attempts to obtain personal information,” said Fuller.

The AAC Credit Union events on April 22nd are held in partnership with Michigan Money Saves Week. Free events will be held statewide to promote financial literacy awareness and education.

To reserve a seat for the Identity Theft seminar, call 616-772-3820. Residents can bring documents for shredding during designated hours, no appointment needed. AAC Credit Union is located at 612 E. Main St. in Zeeland.
