The City of Zeeland has been challenged to a Snowman Building Competition!
And we need your help!

FIVE CITIES: Zeeland, Saline, St. Clair, Douglas and Three Rivers will compete for a traveling trophy and bragging rights of this Snowman Building Competition of the Free World.

The competition will be 2 hours long: 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM.

We will be mass-producing 4 foot snowmen downtown Zeeland.

The goal is to build for quantity, not quality.

*Please bring your own shovel, as well as old hats, scarves, etc. to decorate the snowmen at the conclusion of the contest.

Even if you're not an experienced snowman builder, we still want you to join us downtown. Enjoy staying warm in the cozy little shops, nibbling on fresh treats and sipping on hot cocoa! And when they're done, everyone can join in and decorate the street full of snowmen!

Paint the Town plein air event in Zeeland

Wander through downtown Zeeland to see local artists creating plein air expressions.

What is 'plein air' you ask? En plein air is a French expression which means "in the open air", and is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors.

Artists will be on site the weekend of September 16 - 19 creating their masterpieces. Feel free to visit with them as they paint en plein air!

Monday, September 19 from 6-8pm there will be a public reception at the Howard Miller Library (14 S. Church Street) to view the completed works of art and kick off the silent auction.

The Plein Air Art Exhibit will be on display at the library through Monday, September 26.

ZHS Dance Program celebrates 15th Anniversary with the Spring Dance Concert

The Zeeland High School Dance Program is celebrating its 15th Anniversary with the Spring Dance Concert "Celebrating the Past Present and Future of the Zeeland Dance Program" the weekend of May 20-21. As part of the emphasis on the future there will be two matinee performances on Saturday, May 21 at 10 AM & 1 PM primarily featuring the Zeeland Recreation Dance Program's students and the Zeeland Youth Dance Company along with some guest appearances by the high school's Zeeland Dance Ensemble.

The evening concerts on Friday, May 20 and Saturday, May 21 will feature the students enrolled in the curricular high school dance program. The dance program which started 15 years ago with about 25 enrolled students now features about 180 dancers in grades 9-12 in Dance I, Dance II, Dance II Advanced, and Dance Ensemble classes. The evening will include several re-staged reparatory pieces from the past fifteen years, pieces choreographed by Zeeland alumni, and reflections on dance and the future. The diverse show will include jazz, modern, lyrical, contemporary, ballet, theatrical, and tap dance. Saturday's program will also feature an alumni piece.

This year’s production celebrates 15 years of public dance education in Zeeland schools and is about three hours in length. The show features modern, contemporary, jazz, lyrical, ballet, tap, and jazz performed by Zeeland East & West High Schools’ dance students from the Dance I, Dance II, Dance IIA, and Ensemble classes.

Sale of Blendon Substation Passed Overwhelmingly by Voters

Zeeland, Mich. – Zeeland resident voters overwhelmingly approved a ballot initiative in
yesterday’s election to sell their portion of the Blendon Substation. The measure passed by an
overwhelming 625 to 15, earning the “super majority” vote needed to sell the substation.
The Michigan Electric Transmission Company (METC), which already supervises, operates and
maintains the substation, is interested in purchasing the substation for its current book value of
approximately $400,000. Because the METC already operates the substation, the sale would have no impact on the Zeeland Utility’s transmission access or service.

“The approval of the sale is really the best option for Zeeland residents,” said Bill Cook, General
Manager Zeeland Board of Public Works. “The money from the sale of the substation will be
deposited back into the ZBPW general fund and the cost associated with regulatory compliance will not become the responsibility of Zeeland BPW customers.”

In the wake of the blackout of 2003, the North American Electric Reliability Corp. (NERC) has
determined that the ownership of certain transmission facilities such as those owned by the ZBPW at the Blendon Substation must comply with national reliability standards. Compliance with these standards will cost an estimated $6 million over the next 20 years, a cost too high for Zeeland BPW.

Discussions for the sale of the substation are scheduled to continue on Friday May 6, 2011.

Downtown Zeeland Welkoms hometown Dutch Dancers Monday

Monday, April 25 at 6pm downtown Zeeland will roll out a big Welkom for the Zeeland High School Dutch Dancers to perform in their hometown before the official Tulip Time Festival in Holland. This hometown occasion is has become an annual event, as this will mark the sixth year that downtown has hosted ZPS Dutch Dancers on their own turf.

It is so wonderful that we can bring our local Dutch Dancers downtown Zeeland for a performance before they are officially needed at the Tulip Time Festival. It’s a great way to bring the community together to celebrate our culture, celebrate spring and celebrate our kids! The festive event will be made up of approximately 100 high school Dutch Dancers and will be held on Main Street between Elm and Church Streets. Dutch Dancers will give two performances beginning at 6pm.

Zeeland BPW to Hold Meeting on Sale of Blendon Substation
City to present facts on sale of equipment

The Zeeland Board of Public Works (ZBPW) has announced they will host a
public meeting on April 21, 2011, to discuss the potential sale of equipment at the Blendon
Substation. ZBPW is encouraging city of Zeeland voters to attend the meeting to learn more about the potential sale, which requires voter approval in the May 3 election.

The meeting will be start at 7 p.m. at the Howard Miller Community Center, 14 S. Church Street,
Zeeland. Refreshments will be served.

“Rather than incurring the costs of regulatory compliance associated with ownership of equipment at the Blendon Substation , the Board of Public Works would like to explore the option of selling the equipment and depositing the money back into the BPW general fund,” said Bill Cook, general manager, Zeeland Board of Public Works. “We are inviting the public to hear about the options available, so they can make an informed decision on the May 3 ballot.”

(Sault Ste Marie did not compete.)

Saline is the winner and will be awarded the traveling trophy.

Saturday, January 29 from 11am – 2pm we are hosting a new event called WINTERVENTION downtown Zeeland!

SNOWMAN BUILDING CONTEST: 11am - 1pm

SNOWMAN DECORATING: 1pm - 2pm

This all started because the city of St. Clair issued a challenge to three other Michigan communities to have a snowman making throwdown! How fun! The cities that are competing are: St. Clair, Saline, Sault Ste Marie and Zeeland! Each community will host their version of the “Snowman Making Competition of the Free World” on the same weekend.

Contest rules include:

Contest is 2 hours. (ours will be 11am – 1pm)

No more than 50 ppl building snowman at one time.

Snowmen must be at least 4 ft. tall.

No need to decorate. We’re going for quantity not quality.

THIS JUST IN: (FRIDAY'S UPDATE) We are very thrilled to have had such an outstanding turnout for this year's Feel the Zeel of Giving events -- especially the horse-drawn trolley rides! The trolley rides are first-come first-served. We are limited to 9 rides/night with approx. 20 ppl per ride. This year we are handing out "ride tickets" to ensure your spot in line. The ride ticket allows you to wait inside and shop until it is your turn on the trolley. (sure beats waiting in the cold like last year!) The trolley picks up across the street from Frank's. Get your ride tickets at the red tent on the sidewalk.

Due to the popularity of the trolley rides, we have been running out of ride tickets around 7pm. If you miss the trolley ride, we encourage you to stick around and enjoy free photos with Santa @ Marc Photography (till 8:30), free holiday crafts @ the Dekker Huis Museum (till 7:30) and enjoy the shops downtown Zeeland. Shop for a Cause! Most merchants will donate a portion of sales made between 5:30-8:30pm to Kids Hope USA!

Fall Leaf Pick Up

The City of Zeeland will be picking up leaves for its annual Curbside Leaf Pick Up beginning November 1, 2010. City residents may begin placing leaves only in the street curb beginning Monday, October 18, 2010. Leaves must be loose (no bagged leaves.) Tree limbs, grass clippings and other garden debris will not be picked up.

Leaf pick up will continue through the month of November, weather permitting. Questions may be directed to the City Services and Infrastructure Department at City Hall, 772.0870.

Paint the Town Art Exhibit

Take a tour of the stunning Zeeland artwork that was created during the PAINT THE TOWN event last weekend. Stop by the Howard Miller Library to place a bid on your favorite piece. The Silent Auction runs through Monday, October 4 @ noon. All artwork features Zeeland scenery and was created by local artists. WEATHER UPDATE:

Due to high winds on Friday the Paint the Town Event is taking on a new shape.

Artists are still welcome to brave the weather and set up shop downtown Zeeland on Friday from 3-6pm. However, artists have also been given the option to reschedule their demonstrations for Saturday and/or Monday 3-6pm.

It is very likely that over the course of the 3 days we will see small groupings of artists on each day.

Monday at 6pm there will be a small reception at the Howard Miller Library to display all of the art. This exhibit will stay up for one week. During this time the community is encouraged to browse the works and bid on your favorite piece(s) via a silent auction.

Thank you for your flexibility as we work around our Michigan weather. :)

The City of Zeeland and the Holland Area Arts Council are teaming up to bring art to Zeeland.

During the PAINT THE TOWN EVENT, local artists will be on location painting “en plien air” a French expression meaning “in open air”.

This event will happen Friday September 24th from 3:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m.
Artists will work to complete a painting during the 3:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. time frame while the community is invited to tour a map of the ...artists’ locations and browse their work. All ages are welcome.

If you are an artist and wish to participate please contact Mary Sundstrom at the Holland Area Arts Council to register and name your chosen location. We ask that the locations be in the City of Zeeland, a list of suggested iconic Zeeland locations can be supplied, but any interesting Zeeland scenery is accepted.

At 6:00 p.m. artists will be asked to bring their completed pieces to The Howard Miller Public Library to display their work on easels and attend a small reception. Artwork will be available to purchase through a silent auction running September 24 – October 1. Artists will receive 60% of auction profits; the remainder will be used to fund additional art programming in Zeeland.

Dogarama Photo Shoot @ Marc Photography & PosterDog Contest

Customers will receive a mini photo session with their pet, including at least 2 poses & (1) 4 x 6 print of each pose.

The photos will be uploaded to http://www.marc-photography.net/ the following Tuesday. Additional prints can be purchased.

Photo prints will be available for pick up at Marc Photography by approximately August 31. Special arrangements can be made to have prints mailed. (Once photo prints are available, customers will be notified via e-mail, website, and facebook with more specific information on how to pick up prints.)

All photos will be automatically entered into a contest to select the 2011 Dogarama PosterDog! Bridge to the Community 3-on-3

Join us downtown Zeeland this weekend: August 6 & 7 for the 4th Annual Bridge to the Community 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament!

Once again this event will be kicked off with a Chicken BBQ on Friday evening hosted by Greater Ottawa Youth for Christ. The dinner includes a half-chicken, potato salad, baked beans and dessert. Dinner will be served between 5-7pm. Advance tickets are on sale for $8.50 at the Youth for Christ office located at City on a Hill Ministries, 100 S. Pine Street or by calling 392.1479. Tickets will also be available at the event.

After dinner, enjoy a Christian music concert on the corner of Main & Church Streets while basketball games are played. Several local bands will perform.

Basketball courts will be set up on Main Street between Church & Centennial and on Church Street between Main & Cherry. Games will be played Friday evening & and Saturday morning/afternoon.

Teams pay an entry fee of $100. Registration forms are available at The Bridge Youth Ministry Center located near the corner of Main & Church Streets or by calling 772.3843.
