First, open the padlock on the container door with the personal pin code provided in the booking confirmation. The code is valid for the duration of the booking. Enter the code you received and finally press the lock symbol on the bottom right of the padlock lock. First, open the right door by releasing the handle and turning it to the left. Then open the left door accordingly (the handle is turned to the right). When closing the doors, proceed in reverse order (first left, then the right door, and finally lock the door again with the pad lock). Lock the container every time you go paddling or leaving!

Canoeing vests and life jackets

Buoyancy aids, ie paddling vests, and life jackets are stored in the container hanging from the wooden pins. Always wear a proper buoyancy aid when in the water!

Floating vests and life jackets

Floating vests, ie kayaking vests and life jackets, are stored in the container hanging on the wooden hanging pins. Always wear a buoyancy aid , i.e. a paddling vest or a life jacket!

Yellow and red Baltic kayaking vests (tags F1-F19 on the back of the vest) with a mesh pocket are intended for people who can swim and weigh at least 40 kg. The mesh pocket comes to the front. Attach and tighten both the crotch strap between the legs and the belt strap.

The red large canoe vest (tags F91 and F92) is intended for people who are able to swim and weigh at least 90 kg. They can also use the aforementioned 40kg + vests. Fasten with a zipper and straps.

A bailer for emptying the canoe must be in each canoe. The bailers are stored next to the door.

Canoes

The theoretical carrying capacity of all our rented canoes is approx. 500 kg or more, so each is well suited for use by two normal-weight adults and possibly children coming aboard. If you have received instructions for choosing a canoe in the booking confirmation, please follow them. Otherwise, you can choose to choose from canoes 1-8 based on the information below.

#

model

additional info

1

Wenonah Northfork

recommended for heavy paddlers

2

Wenonah Northfork

recommended for heavy paddlers

3

Wenonah Southfork

4

Wenonah Southfork

5

Old Town Penobscot 164

extra middle seat available

6

Old Town Penobscot 164

extra middle seat available

7

Old Town Penobscot 164

extra middle seat available

8

Old Town Penobscot 164

fixed middle seat, take only if you need a third seat

9

not for rent

0

not for rent

Paddles

As a rule of thumb to estimate paddle length: Stand up straight and place the paddle next to you under your armpit. When the paddle fits just under the armpit or is a little longer but doesn’t rise above the shoulder line, it’s a good length. However, the differences of a few cents do not really matter on a day trip.

length

pcs

107 cm

2

wooden paddle small children

130 cm

1

blue blade

135 cm

7

blue blade

137 cm

1

black blade

145 cm

10

black blade

153 cm

1

black blade

Taking the canoe from the rack

A tandem canoe weighs about 40 kg, so it’s good to have at least two people lifting it. Take the canoe and equipment by the water, avoid rocks, make sure all equipment is with you and lock the container before paddling.

Equipment maintenance before return

Clean and dry the canoes

Before returning the canoes, clean and dry the canoes with rags on the inside. The rags kept drying are outside the container hanging on a string. Also, clean paddles, bailers, and vests as needed. If you notice any deficiencies or defects in the equipment, please notify us immediately (info@feelthenature.fi, 040 900 5556)

These rental conditions apply to the rental service of canoes and canoeing equipment (Equipment) equipment rental service for Feel The Nature (The Service Provider).

The subject of the contract

Familiarization with the rental conditions of the equipment, reservation, and payment of the reservation is made in the online service provided by The Service Provider unless otherwise agreed between the parties. The customer is obliged to read the instructions and undertakes to rent the equipment in accordance with these terms.

The Service Provider makes the leased equipment available to the customer in proper working order. In self-employed rental, the customer uses the equipment and returns it independently according to the instructions given.

Rental period

The rental period starts from the beginning of the booking when the customer has access to the service provider’s warehouse to take over the equipment and ends until it is returned in proper condition to the Service Provider’s warehouse.

Rent and other compensation

Unless otherwise agreed, the rental prices of the equipment are determined in accordance with The Service Providers price list.

Acceptance inspection

The customer must inspect the equipment immediately upon commissioning. The customer accepts the equipment for rent in the condition it is after the acceptance inspection. If the customer finds in the acceptance inspection a defect, which prevents the safe use of the equipment, the customer shall immediately notify the Service Provider, who shall endeavor to give instructions on the replacement equipment. If the fault or defect does not prevent the safe use of the equipment, the customer records it with a mobile phone camera, for example, and reports it to the service provider immediately.

Use and care of equipment

The customer undertakes to use, store and manage the equipment carefully and properly. Equipment may not be taken out of the area, for example by car, unless specifically agreed with the Service Provider. The customer is not entitled to transfer the equipment to a third party for use. The equipment must not be used for activities that are against the law, regulations, or good manners, such as activities that disturb the peace of wildlife in the national park or the privacy of beach cottages.

The use of the equipment is always at the customer’s own risk. The equipment may only be used in suitable conditions, in waters deep enough, where there is no rocks, for example, which would damage the equipment. If the customer takes the equipment to an area where there is are rocks or other things which could damage the equipment, she is obliged to ensure that the equipment is not damaged, for example by avoiding or lifting the equipment over the rocks. The customer cleans and dries the equipment thoroughly before return.

Liability for equipment and liability

The customer is responsible for any damage to the equipment during the rental period. The customer must immediately notify The Service Provider of any damage or loss to the equipment. In addition, the customer pays rent for the damaged or lost rental property in accordance with the rental agreement until the end of the rental period. If a technical or other defect occurs in the equipment, regardless of the customer’s operations, the customer can return the equipment immediately to the service provider, in which case the lease expires at the time of return.

The customer is also responsible for any damage that The Service Provider discovers when returning the equipment or at a subsequent inspection. The customer undertakes to reimburse the costs of repairing the equipment to the extent that it can be repaired or the costs of acquiring new equivalent equipment or equipment if the equipment or part thereof has been destroyed, lost, or cannot be repaired or returned to The Service Provider for any other reason.

If the rented equipment is returned in a condition that requires cleaning, drying, or repair, the customer will be charged the costs in addition to the rent. An unrepairable product will be charged the price of a new similar product. The Customer uses the products at her own risk. To avoid misunderstandings, we are happy to advise you on issues related to the use of the products.

The Customer is responsible for ensuring that the codes used to open the warehouse are not passed on to a third party and are not used outside the rental period. He is also responsible for ensuring that unauthorized persons do not have access to the warehouse and that the warehouse is properly locked when he leaves the warehouse.

Normal wear and tear are not considered damage. However, damage to the equipment in clearly visible rocks/boulders or similar location is not considered normal wear and tear.

If the customer wishes to extend the agreed rental period, the Service Provider has no obligation to extend the rental period. The extension of the rental period takes effect when the customer receives confirmation of the extension from the Service Provider. Please note that the equipment may be reserved for other uses or the Service Provider may not be available, so always be prepared to be able to return the equipment on time.

If the customer returns the equipment after the agreed rental period, the customer is obliged to pay additional hours for the equipment with a 100% price increase and to pay a delay fee of € 50 / canoe. Penalties for delays are not charged to the extent that the delay is due to a sudden unexpected change in weather conditions that may jeopardize safe movement in the area (eg having to wait for a sudden thunderstorm to subside). In this case, the customer must immediately notify the Service Provider and return the Equipment as soon as possible.

Customer Reporting Obligation

The customer must immediately notify the Service Provider of any errors or damage to the equipment, or theft. The customer must also report the theft immediately to the police. If the customer fails to comply with the above-mentioned notification obligations, he is liable for damages incurred by the Service Provider.

Service Provider’s right to suspend service

The Service Provider has the right to refuse to hand over the equipment to the customer or to suspend the equipment rental and demand the immediate return of the equipment if the Service Provider has reasonable grounds to suspect that the rental conditions are not met, eg if the group is intoxicated. In this case, the service provider is not obliged to refund service fees.

Responsibilities of the Service Provider

The service provider is responsible for ensuring that the leased equipment is technically in a condition to be used for the activity at the time of delivery. If a technical defect or other defect occurs in the equipment during the rental period, the customer has the right to demand a rental reduction corresponding to the defect. If the condition of the equipment is constitutive, the customer has the right to demand termination of the lease.

This also applies if the equipment is not technically in a condition to be rented to the customer at the beginning of the rental period or is not available due to a late return by another customer or a problem with the booking system. The Service Provider is not liable for any direct or indirect damage that may result from equipment breakage and rental interruption.

Monitoring

We monitor the use and return of equipment electronically, e.g. video recording. Surveillance material from which the lessee can be identified will not be used for any other purpose and will not be passed on to third parties unless required by law or regulatory requirements. Material is removed when it is no longer relevant for control purposes.

Customer’s right of cancel the booking / refund

If you wish to cancel your booking, we will only refund if there is an unexpected change in the weather conditions (after the booking) which can be a potential safety hazard (in practice strong wind or thunder). For example, rainy weather is not a basis for a refund of the booking fee. We, therefore, recommend that you only rent when you know you can get there.

General

When planning a trip and itinerary and before you leave, you should always take into account the weather, your own experience and endurance, and the rental period. Also, read the safety and equipment instructions. You should be able to shorten or change the planned route during the trip if conditions change.

In high winds, especially during storms, there is no reason to go canoeing. We rarely have such winds in Nuuksio. While it is a thunderstorm you should not be canoeing either. The risk of lightning strikes and is greatest in the middle of the lake. In addition, incoming thunderstorms are often accompanied by strong gusts of wind.

In moderate winds, the lakes have sheltered spots near the shores where canoeing is easy. The open canoes we use are stable but quite sensitive to the wind, and especially the wind coming from the side can affect the direction of the canoe. But even a strong wind does not in itself capsize the canoe.

Where to paddle

Naturally, Lake Kattilajärvi, from which you launch the canoes, is the primary place for canoeing, but Lake Vääräjärvi is also easily accessible, as the neck of land between the lakes is only about 80 meters at its narrowest. Departure to Urja via Lake Vääräjärvi then requires more consideration and experience, as the range between the lakes is wider and carrying canoes more demanding.

In general, you are free to paddle on the lakes, as long as you do not get too close to the birds, swimmers, or private beaches, which are marked on the instruction map. However, for safety reasons, you should always paddle so close to the beach that you can swim well to the beach after the canoe has fallen and also help children to the beach, for example. There’s more to see near the beaches anyway.

Kattilajärvi : Don’t disturb the swimmers at the swimming area. The area of the Kattilaniemi Youth Camp Center is reserved for private events, and there are private villas in the southeast corner of the lake – respect privacy and don’t paddle too close on the beach.

Lake Vääräjärvi : There are two private cottages on the north shore of the lake. Don’t go to the cottage beach, even if you go to visit the northern bottom.

Urja : The Norther shore has a private beach and settlement.

Of course, on or after a paddling trip, it’s nice to have a snack break, possibly even by the campfire staring at the fire. However, remember that in the area, open fires are allowed only at dedicated purpose-built fireplaces, which are located next to the starting point in Kattilajärvi (on the map: 3), on the peninsula in Vääräjärvi (12) and at the southern end of Urja (22). It is forbidden to make an open fire during a forest fire warning, but you can use a camping stove (gas/fuel) with caution.

Scheduling

Canoeing speeds vary, of course, but a few rules of thumb for scheduling while on the water: To have time to return your canoe on time, it’s a good idea to set aside at least 15 minutes for equipment maintenance after landing. If you go to Lake Vääräjärvi, you have to leave about 40 minutes before the end of the rental period so that you have time to transport the canoe over the isthmus, paddle to the starting point, and do the maintenance of the equipment. Of course, you can go back earlier and still tour the shores of Lake Kattilajärvi before returning.

During the two-hour rental, you can either paddle around Lake Kattilajärvi and crosswise, and possibly ashore on the opposite shore- (4) and even take a peek at the lookout rock (6). If you want to go canoeing to Vääräjärvi on a two-hour excursion, go straight from the starting point over the isthmus to Vääräjärvi, where you can do a nice loop and then return.

During the three-hour hike, you will already have time to tour both Kattilajärvi and Vääräjärvi and even take a reasonable lunch/swim break. The map shows the Vääräjärvi fireplace, which also has a toilet and other possible landing sites. If you were going to go to Lake Urja in three hours, you have to have a good pace of kayaking, both kayaking and carrying canoes. We recommend a four-hour rental period to visit Urja.

Four hours rental let you have time to take a longer break in Vääräjärvi and possibly go for a walk, for example, to the nearby cliffs. It is also possible to visit Urja, even at the fireplace at the southern end, but take into account that carrying canoes betweenVääräjärvi and Urja is pretty challenging, as mentioned in the excursion instructions.

Lake Kattilajärvi

The southern part of Lake Kattilajärvi is mainly a recreation area of owned by city of Espoo and Kattilaniemi is a youth camp center used by various organizations. Otherwise, the shore of Lake Kattilajärvi is mainly part of Nuuksio National Park. Canoe tour round Kattilajärvi(on the map) is about 3 km.

1 – Our canoeing base (brown wood-clad building) is right next to the Kattilajärvi shore. The best address for a navigator is Kattilajärventie 30, Espoo, but do not go through the camp center gate (number 30) but stop by the lake for a parking space. Occasionally the P-spot may be full and another smaller P-spot is e.g. a couple of hundred meters before the lake at the intersection of “Kattilajärven polku” road.

2 – The beach toilet is a red-painted wooden building right next to the road, about 50 m up from the parking lot. There is also a changing room between the P-spot and the beach.

3 – Directly upwards from the P place is a fireplace maintained by the City of Espoo.

4 – From this landing-place, it is easiest to continue across the isthmus (distance approx. 80 m) by carrying canoes to Vääräjärvi. The landing place is on the left side of the reed when viewed from the lake and shows e.g. white-tipped marker post next to a pine tree about 15 m. from the shoreline. You should come to this shallow beach perpendicular to the beach. Of course, if you have water-resistant footwear, you can wade on the shallow beach.

Kattilajärven puoleinen rantautumispaikka mentäessä kannaksen yli Vääräjärvelle.

6 – The nearby rock offers a great view over Lake Vääräjärvi. Take a look if you want to take a little forest walk while canoeing.

Lake Vääräjärvi

Lake Vääräjärvi belongs almost entirely to Nuuksio National Park, with the exception of private cottages in the northern part. The map-marked canoe route around the lake is 4.2 km long.

11 – The best landing/departure point (in the direction of Lake Kattilajärvi) is on the west side of the bay near the cliffs. The beach bottom is soft, so you shouldn’t wade further from the shore but put canoes along the beach when you launch or land.

12, 13 – The best way to get to the Vääräjärvi campfire place is by canoe from the south of the small headland of the campfire place. It is also the best place to go swimming. Lift the canoes over the rocks carefully, please . There is a dry toilet in the immediate vicinity of the fireplace. This is the only place on the shores of Lake Vääräjärvi where making campfire is allowed – but only when there is no forest fire warning.

Best landing place at the Vääräjärvi campfire place

14, 15 and 16 – Alternative rest places on the shores of Lake Vääräjärvi. Please note that these are not permitted campfire places and do not have toilets.

17 and 18 ovat rantautumispaikkoja mikäli jatkat Urjalle. Kannaksen ylitys on vaativa suoritus. Kantakaa kanootit kivien yli!

17 and 18 are landing places if you continue to Urja. Crossing the isthmus between the lakes is quite demanding. The recommended landing place (17, pictured below on the right) on the Vääräjärvi side is next to a small cliff and a path goes to Urja. It is also possible to go through the swamp (18, pictured left), but note that the swamp is quite wet. Take a look at the route before you start to carry the canoe. Carry canoes over the rocks!

Landing places when crossing from Vääräjärvi to Urjalle, 18 and 17

There are two private villas in the northern / northwestern part of Lake Vääräjärvi just outside the national park. The area is marked in red on the map. Keep a fair distance from the beach to the cottages.

Lake Urja

Mikäli menette Urjalla, kannattaa käydä kääntymässä eteläpäässä. Järven pohjoispäässä on hienoja jyrkänteitä, jotka näkyvätkin jo rantautumispaikalta (21). Vältä kuitenkin pohjoispään yksityisrantoja . Kannattaa lähtiessä laittaa rantautumispaikka mieleen, sillä sitä on hieman hankala nähdä järveltä puiden takaa.

There is a private area in the northern part of Lake Urjajärvi, but otherwise, Urja is a Nuuksio National Park or a private conservation area. The canoe route marked on the map around Lake Urjajärvi is about 4 km long.

Please take into account the difficulty of crossing the isthmus between Lake Vääräjärvi and Lake Urja, before deciding to continue to Urja. Crossing the isthmus from Vääräjärvi to Urja with its landing is a much more demanding than crossing the isthmus between Kattilajärvi and Vääräjärvi. Also, the risk of getting wet is higher, the trip is longer and you have to carry and lift a canoe all the way because of the rocky terrain and fallen trees. We do not recommend crossing if the canoes feel heavy to carry over long distances.

If you go to Urja, you should visit the south end. There is also a campfire place with a toilet (22 and 23). At the northern end of the lake, there are fine cliffs, which you can see from the landing site (21). However, avoid the private beaches at the north end. It’s a good idea to keep the landing in mind when you leave, as it’s a little tricky to see from the lake behind the trees on the way back.

Ensuring the health and safety of guests and the staff is our first priority during the COVID-19 pandemic. Same time we want to offer first-class experiences in Finnish nature. The current situation affects the implementation of the tours. But we are also developing services you can enjoy by yourself.

Changes to existing programs

At the moment (November 2020), we do not provide transportation from Helsinki to Nuuksio National Park as part of the day tour, e.g. canoeing or foraging tours. According to our current plan, we are going to offer transportation from summer season 2021 from Espoon keskus (Espoo Centre), about 20 minutes drive from starting places. Wearing a mask is mandatory during shared transportation. It is possible to come to the starting point of the tour with your own transport also.

We have also made changes to snack provided. Naturally, we take safety into account during the trip itself, ensuring good hand hygiene and safe distances.

Services are subject to change due to changes in pandemic situation and/or new health recommendations given by the authorities.

New innovative services

During the summer, we will open a self-service canoe rental in Kattilajärvi, Nuuksio. Our rental place is located just by the finest paddling lakes of Nuuksio National Park. We will offer required info you to canoeing safety and give you the best tips for a self-guided trip.

We are also publishing new innovative digital services, the first launch was an online wild food course (in Finnish). We are also developing virtual nature tours, which you can explore for free through our social media services.

Nuuksio National Park is a lake upland where countless lakes, ponds, brooks, and mires as well as rocks and steep cliffs bring variation to the forest landscapes. Guided Hike in Nuuksio National Park takes you to a great outdoor area with lakes, hills, and forests where you can enjoy tranquil Finnish nature – only a 40-minute drive from Helsinki.

The guide takes you to the most interesting spots and tells you about the nature and the history of the area. In the summertime, you can also dip into a forest lake in the middle of the hike.

On a private trip, we will always adjust the route and speed according to your wishes. The duration of a hiking trip, including a break, is ca. 3,5 hours in nature and 5 hours with transportation.
