The Church of Saint John at Kaneo is an orthodox church right by the side of huge Lake Ohrid which marks the border between Macedonia and Albania. The lake is one of the oldest freshwater lakes in the world, while the church is one of the oldest of the Balkans, having been constructed most likely before the Ottoman Empire, as Archaeologists believe.

Here we go with a shot of Chile's presidential palace called 'La Moneda', situated in the center of Chile's capital Santiago. This is the building that Pinochet bombed on September 11th, 1973, in order to usurp Salvador Allende's position as the President of Chile. Sad history, beautiful day.

'Siete Tazas' means 'Seven Cups' ... this waterfall runs through exactly seven smaller or bigger cups until it becomes a really beautiful lake at the very bottom. Pefect for having a cooling bath in the mid-summer heat!

Yes, it's really green. After two weeks between icebergs, penguins and senior citizens, it's quite nice to walk through a real forest and see a real lake ... this shot was taken close to Puerto Williams, the world's southernmost settlement.

No Global Warming

I am not going to deny Global Warming. But: Even though what you see here seems to be indicating it, it isn't. It's a natural thing down in Antarctica that really really huge icebergs float around - plus penguins simply love jumping from and upon them. So, virtually, this is just a fantastic playground for Gentoo Penguins. And indeed impressing.

An indeed impressive occurence: In my humble opinion, the antarctic coast may be one of the few places where you have the possibility to clink glasses on the occasion of welcoming the new year in the warm light of midsummer's sun. What you see is Anvers Island ashore the Antarctic Peninsula. The Mountains arise about 2000 metres (approx. 6600 foot) straight from sea level!

A Glacier's Symmetry

Enjoy the symmetry and the incredibly beautiful appearance of a massive glacier on the Antarctic Peninsula. Please note that the glacier's height is about 30 metres (100 foot!) - plus, the deep blue something you can figure out in the back of the crack is not only shadows but mainly ozone which has been locked in the ice for millions (or hundreds of thousands? thousands? for sure: many many!) of years. Great!

A scene from the very South of Argentina: Only a couple of miles from Ushuaia, presumably the world's southernmost town and one of Argentina's southernmost spots, you find the large National Park stretching from the legendary Beagle Channell up to the Chilean border. The Mountains in the background are likely to be Chile already.

A visit to Buenos Aires gave me - luckily - the possibility of visiting the famous immigrants' quarter of La Bocca, homeground to the world-known Boca Juniors, the team Maradona has been playing for for several years. Never mind River Plate, here's Boca Juniors!

Sad enough, we didn't have the chance to see any orcas, also known as killer whales, but nevertheless had a beautiful sunset!

This was really incredibly beautiful: A calm morning in the beginning of December with freezing -5°C; hardly any people around. Some handful of people (including me) on a ferry of the Coastal Express (a. k. a. Hurtigruten) in one of the most beautiful scenic landscapes Northern Europe can offer. Astonishing.

The Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, Syria

What you see is the courtyard of the famous Umayyad Mosque in the Syrian capital Damascus. It's construction was completed in 705 AC.
Actually, it is a very special place: Inside of the mosque you can see a shrine containing the head of John the Baptist, who is considered a prophet by both Muslims and Christians.
The small tower on the left hand side of this image ist the so-called Beit al Mal, the ancient treasury.
