I am delighted to share a review of the British Felt Biscuits eBook by Ouissi Gresty from how2crafts! Ah.... if only all craft patterns could be this beautifully detailed and result in such yummy-looking treats. The eBook (also available in print) contains 85 full-color pages chock full of precise instructions, crystal clear step-by-step photos, and clearly drawn pattern pieces. Essential techniques for working with felt are also covered - transferring embroidery patterns to felt along with 8 basic stitches. These skills will carry far beyond this set of patterns!

My, oh my, what a cute party game! Andi of Jane of All Crafts shares a tutorial on how to whip up your own 'Pin the Candle on the Cupcake' game. This would be a such hit at a birthday party. It's so cute that I think it deserves to be played every day - birthday or not!

Jannell, of artteajannell, was sweet enough to share her hand-embroidered hearts with me! They are all stitched freehand from her own designs. I'm the type that relies on a pattern, so I really admire how her creativity flows through the fingers to the felt. The 'bleeding heart' flowers embroidered on the heart are particularly clever (first photo), but the french knot clusters (second photo) are my favorite :)

Hello! My name is Marigold and I'm from a little blog called Hideous! Dreadful! Stinky! over on the other side of the Internet. Today I have a tutorial for you on making a two-toned felted ring bowl using needle felting and wet felting techniques. These bowls make great gifts for newlyweds, anniversaries, or Valentine's Day. You can replace the initials with a short name, or how about "Mom" for Mother's Day? Make this in wedding colors, and it can even be used as a ring bearer bowl in place of a traditional ring pillow.
Without further ado, here's the tute. Enjoy!

Supplies:
Styrofoam cylinder
Tulle (enough to cover foam)
Straight pins
Wool roving in two coordinating colors
Felting needle
Hot water
Dish soap
Drinking glass
Foam needle felting base
Embroidery thread
Needle

Cover your Styrofoam cylinder with tulle and use straight pins to secure it at the bottom. Needle felting will tear up Styrofoam quickly, and this will help cut down on the amount of Styrofoam bits that end up in your project.

Choose the color for the bottom of your bowl. Grasp the end of your wool roving and hold it between your palm and four fingers. Gently pull the roving off of the skein.

Place your roving on top of your Styrofoam cylinder (not the side with the pins). Cover the top of the foam, alternating the way you place the roving down so the fibers crisscross. Use a felting needle and jab at the roving. Jab, jab, jab! As you jab, form the roving to fit on top of the cylinder in a fairly neat circle. Continue to jab with your needle. Check for uneven and thin spots, and add roving to those areas as necessary. Once this roving starts to condense and become felt, you can lift it off of the base as a single piece. Do this two or three times during the needle felting process to keep it from sticking to the base, and also to dust off any Styrofoam bits from the bottom. You don't want this to be fully felted, just enough to have a nice neat disc of semi-felted roving. Lift it off the Styrofoam and then replace it. Now pull off and place your second color of roving all around the sides of the cylinder. Overlap a thin layer of your second color around the edges of the first color. Jab, jab, jab at the whole thing with your felting needle.

Flip the foam over and needle felt along the top edge of your bowl.

Gently, gently pull the roving off of the base. Dust off the Styrofoam bits. Check for thin spots or weak spots, especially where the two colors meet. Put the bowl on the Styrofoam base again and needle felt some more, adding roving to the thin spots.

Remove the bowl from the base again. It should look like a nice, fuzzy bird's nest. The more you needle felt, the more consistent your final bowl will look, and the easier the wet felting process will be. Less needle felting will give you a more organic shape and is a little bit harder to handle in the wet felting process.

Add a few drops of dish soap (you don't need much, just enough to form some suds) to a bowl or sink and fill it with the hottest tap water you can stand to have your hands in. Hold your breath! Here we go! Plunge your bowl into the hot water. Don't freak out! It will feel funny and you'll wonder if the whole thing is going to fall apart. Just be gentle and lightly agitate the bowl in the hot water. Gently press the sides of the bowl between your hands. Make sure to move you hand out of the bowl often so that the loose fibers don't get tangled in your fingers. The fibers will begin to shrink and come together. Continue to gently agitate and shape the bowl between your hands. Lift it up out of the water and press between you hands. Plunge back in, rotate a bit, squeeze some more. It will begin to feel more solid and sturdy. When the bowl is the size you want it to be, rinse it under cold water, being sure to rinse out all of the soap.

Squeeze out all of the excess water. Don't wring it, just press it between your hands and get as much moisture out as possible. You can even use a dish towel and press it against that. Form your bowl into shape and place it bowl upside down over the base of a drinking glass. Press down to flatten the base of your bowl againt the glass, and place in a sunny window to dry for several hours or overnight.

Once your bowl is dry, check for any uneven areas, weak spots or holes (often at the bottom of the bowl). Add a little extra roving to these spots and needle felt over a foam base

To make the heart for the bottom of the bowl, draw a heart in the size you want onto a foam base (I used permanent marker). Pull off a small piece of roving and place it over the heart. Jab at the roving with your felting needle along the edge of the heart. It will stick to the base, which will help you form the right shape. Continue to jab at it until it is fully felted, being sure to pull it off occasionally and flip it over to felt both sides.

Embroider initials or a monogram onto the heart using embroidery thread and a needle. I like to use three strands of embroidery thread. Tip: Make the "+" symbol in the middle first and then the letters on either side of it. Place the heart in the bottom of the bowl and needle felt it into place until it is secure.

And you're finished! Keep in mind that different kinds of wool will felt differently. Some shrink more than others, and so your results will vary for each bowl. Some will be more organically shaped, some will be very even and consistent. Your first bowl may not turn out exactly as you expect it to, but you may end up with a happy accident! Of the hundreds of felt tutorials on the web, Kaitlyn's (of http://craitlyn.blogspot.com) Felt Alphabet Book is among the most delightful I've ever seen! With much time, love, and patience, Kaitlyn created 26 alphabet patterns for her sweet babies, Mason and Charlie. Free versions of the patterns are still available, and she's also upgraded each pattern in Illustrator.

Happy, Happy New Year!! Don't you love the clean slate of the new year? It seems that every year my resolution is the same - find more time for sewing and crafting. Maybe 2011 will be the year that I actually make it happen!

Festive Felt for the Holidays

As we near the holidays and the felt orders have slowed down a bit, I've finally had some time to do some much-needed crafting!

I had so much fun making my version of the Too Cute Reindeer Shirt from Noodles & Milk. I created this shirt for my little guy to wear for his first visit to Santa. The visit to Santa was filled with tears and frowns, but there were many smiles when he put on his new Rudolph shirt.

I used Wool Blend Felt in Latte, Root Beer, and Sweet Pickle for the face, antlers, and bowtie. Of course, I pre-washed the Wool Blend Felt before appliquing so that the shirt will be machine washable in the future. The shiny red nose was created from Woven Felted Wool in Candy Apple. Woven Felted Wool is ready to applique and doesn't need to be pre-washed before using.

Next, is a sweet little stocking that my mom and I created. This project is perfect for your felt scraps! In this case, we used Woven Felted Wool scraps, used a rotary scallop blade to finish the edges, and then sewed the scalloped strips onto a basic stocking template. We finished it off with a little flower cut from the Sizzix Big Shot Express. The flower center is a scalloped edged scrap that is rolled up with felt glue.

I also wanted to share the $3 treasure I scooped up at the local antique barn. Once upon a time, someone spent many careful hours sewing sequins onto this smiling Santa kit. It's the perfect spot to hold our Christmas cards.

And last, but not least, take a peek at the fuzzy mitten ornaments that my super-crafty cousin made! I just love them and they quickly found a home on our Christmas tree. She said they were really quick to whip up and the metallic thread is the perfect touch of sparkle. Here is a little felt mitten ornament tutoria l I discovered if you want to make your own!

Holiday Felt Tutorials: Glitter Trees and Queen Winter

First, we have Glittered Felt Christmas Trees (pictures at left) from Lorajean's Magazine. Felt + Glitter = How can you go wrong?! These trees are super sweet and would go with any holiday decor from modern, to retro, to traditional.

Next up, is Her Magesty, Queen Winter, from Twig & Toadstool (pictured below). More felt and sparkle (yay!) and I simply can't resist anything wearing an acorn cap. Shanti also suggested perching Queen Winter on top of the Christmas tree - brilliant!

Kim, of ekofabrik, designs and sews some seriously cute pillows!! On top of that, she's a graphic designer, photographer, children's book illustrator, and even has plans for her own craft book in the works. Now that's a girl exploding with talent!

What do you design and create?
I design eco-friendly pillows and home décor items. I am very environmentally aware so I choose to use recycled and organic materials. I use 100% recycled plastic bottle felt by eco-fi, vintage fabrics, felted old sweaters and organic linens.

When did you develop a passion for crafting?
I have always done something creative, ever since I can remember. I have a lot of artists in my family that have inspired me throughout my life.

What do you enjoy most about the design or creation process?
What I like the most is the initial design process. I take my camera and go on a field trip to the garden center, the park, etc. to see what inspires me. I tend to use nature and personal experiences in my designs.

Do you sell your creations? If so, how did you get started?
Yes, I have a store on Etsy called ekofabrik (www.ekofabrik.etsy.com). I recently decided to leave the rat race of the business world and work from home. I am a graphic designer by trade, so I do freelance from home and make pillows on the side for fun.

When did you become interested in crafting with felt?
It was searching the web for ideas for my new store and came across Felt-O-Rama. I was looking for something recycled and eco-friendly and found exactly what I was looking for. Felt is so easy to sew with, there is no fraying and it is “green”!.

What is one of your favorite tips for working with felt?
I use a product called “Stitch Witchery" which is a must when you are doing intricate cutting and sewing of small felt pieces. It is a fusible webbing you use to adhere the small pieces to your craft project so they don’t move when you sew them. I can’t live without it.

Do you enjoy any other crafts or hobbies?

Last Minute Felt Scarecrow Costume

Happy Halloween from Felt-o-rama! I wanted to share the super-simple (and super-cute, I think!) Scarecrow Costume that I made for my little one's first Halloween this year. He's too little to trick-or-treat - or even eat candy, for that matter - but I couldn't resist putting a little costume together for him and taking way too many pictures.

So here's what I did to create the outfit in a little over an hour. I only spent 99 cents on the entire costume to buy fabric leaves since I already had the shirt, overalls, and felt scraps! This would also be a simple outfit for a 'big kid'.

Here's what I did:
- Cut rectangles of felt to stitch to the cuff of the shirt and pants. You'll want the rectangle length to go all away around the cuff and the width to be a few inches long. I used scraps of two colors of Recycled Eco-Felt - Gold and Cashmere Tan. This will be the scarecrow's 'hay' stuffing. After stitching on the felt, cut it into slivers to look like hay. I also notched the end to make it more realistic.
- Add some felt and fabric patches to the overalls and hat. I quickly sewed the patches on with a basting stitch so they didn't look too perfect. I also added a few fabric leaves from the dollar store. Be sure to add a few strips of felt 'hay' in the pockets of the overalls. This can be sewn on or attached with a safety pin.
- The most time consuming part of the costume was the hat. I made a simple witch's hat out of brown felt to fit my son's head. Next, I tacked down the peak of the hat, since we want a scarecrow hat - not a witch's hat! I added a few strips of felt 'hay' coming out of the top of the hat along with a few felt and fabric patches. I also notched the edge of the brim to make the hat look more worn.
- For hay 'hair', I sewed a rectangle of felt to the inside of the brim of the hat and then cut it into slivers to look like hay. This was my favorite part of the costume!
- Finish it off with a scarecrow triangle nose, freckles, and a bandana around the neck.

I also want to share this wonderfully fun 'Pin the Heart on the Skeleton' game from SuperMomMoments. This would be absolutely perfect for a kid's Halloween party. This version is made with appliqued Recycled Eco-Felt, but you could also use paper if you're in a hurry for this evening's festivities!

Felt Candy Corn & More Halloween Ideas!

Oh my, I'm embarrassed at long it's been since I've written a blog post. Things have been so busy here at Felt-o-rama, that I've spent most of my free time filling orders! Nearly one more week until Halloween and here are some fun ideas to share with you.

I recently discovered the Wisteria catalog, which is chock full of so many great felt ideas for Halloween that could certainly be replicated at home. The Mummy ornament (last photo below) even got me thinking about a real Mummy costume made with strips of felt. Hmmm.... now if I just had a Halloween party to go to!

Happy September! I'm so excited that fall is just around the corner. I just love crunchy leaves, cool air, and carved pumpkins. This year is my little one's first Halloween so I've been jumping the gun a bit and thinking about what I'll make for his first costume. It will be made of felt, naturally! I wanted to share these fantastic Halloween costumes from Pottery Barn Kid s as a starting place for making your own costumes. All of these ideas would be perfect to craft out of felt -- you could even use glue for some of these ideas if you aren't into sewing!

(p.s. - I recommend using Recycled Eco-Fel t for kids Halloween costumes. It's very affordable, easy to work with and machine washable. What more can you ask for?!)
