For far too many years in my business, I struggled with narrowing my specialty and choosing a niche. I believed that fine tuning my niche would keep away much needed business and clients.

I have found the opposite to be true. Now my niche has become more like a beacon that attracts just the right clients without as much effort on my part.

What is a niche? My definition of a niche is a target market plus a specialty. You can start with one or the other, but in order to have a true niche, you must have both.

Narrowing your niche just means that you are positioning yourself more closely to the people or companies who could most benefit from your services. When you hone in on your ideal target audience, business comes to you more easily, you enjoy doing what you do every day, and you make more money. Your marketing becomes much more effortless, and people start to call you instead of you chasing after them.

The latest trend is to have a ‘micro-niche’, which means choosing a much smaller niche where you know you can be a leader and really stand out as the top expert.

Choosing your niche market has many benefits:

• It will allow you to focus on your strengths – what you are brilliant at.
• It will free you to do your best, most creative, heart-felt work.
• It positions you to attract significantly more business.
• It makes you more easily referable.
• It gives you a natural competitive advantage.

A good niche market is one in which:

• You have contacts and /or experience.
• You can use your greatest talents and gifts.
• You can easily connect with prospects and clients.
• There are many ways your can be highly visible to your market through speaking, writing or networking.
• There is potential for prospective partnerships and collaborations with others serving the same market.

Here are some examples of niche markets:

• Stressed out women executives who want to bring more balance into their lives to have more time for what’s most important to them. (Target audience: women executives; specialty: work-life balance).
• New moms who want to lose the weight they put on during pregnancy. (Target audience: new moms; specialty: weight loss or healthy eating).
• Leadership development for health care managers and executives. (Target audience: health care managers and executives; specialty: leadership).

As you get closer to defining your ideal clients and specialized expertise, you will feel more confident. You’ll start to know with more certainty which clients are just right for you and exactly how you can help them. You’ll know with certainty which opportunities to say yes to and which to say no to.

When you don’t have a specialty and you try to be all things to all people, it is very stressful and time consuming and you don’t come across as your best, most authentic self.

A niche provides rich opportunities for self expression.When you ‘find your groove’ you can express yourself very creatively and authentically while attracting significantly more business.

The cost of not having a niche strategy is not being recognized for your expertise which means that you will have to work far too hard for less business and you won’t make as much money as you could with a clear niche market.

The easiest way to grow a business is to find an existing need and fill it. Don’t try to create demand that doesn’t already exist or you’ll go broke.

Developing a niche is a process of exploring several possibilities and then gradually refining them. Start with your strengths and experience. Then, determine who you really like to work with most and in what environment. Notice who shows up for you, who you get referred to, and what types of issues you are most passionate and knowledgeable about.

Find the need in the marketplace that exactly meets your strengths, and you’ll find the easiest way to business success through narrowing your niche.

There has never been better time to write an eBook.

Ebooks and other “How-To” Manuals are the hottest thing selling on the internet right now. There is a phenomenal global potential to distribute information products using the Internet.

Writing about what you know and publishing it in eBooks is one of the most effective ways to grow your professional service business. Publishing information products can help you become a recognized authority in your area of expertise as well as substantially increase your income.

Writing an eBook or other information product will help you to:

• market and grow your business
• focus your energy and business efforts
• develop a strong reputation
• establish yourself as a recognized expert in your field
• stand out in a crowded marketplace
• attract traffic to your web site
• gain you new clients with less effort
• get you noticed by the media
• expand your business globally
• command much higher fees
• earn passive income

With all those advantages, writing an eBook or information product would seem like a great thing to do. And it is.

Here are some tips to get you off to great start:

• Choose a Subject for Your eBook or How-To Manual
• Research the needs of your target market
• Get feedback from your current clients and customers
• Decide on a topic and research it well
• Get clear on the benefits of your solution for your target audience

Create an Outline
An outline is a roadmap for the subjects you plan to cover as you write – the steps to the solution you have for the problem your target market has.

• Brainstorm ideas about everything you want to share on your subject.
• Write ten points you want your readers to know about your topic.
• Define the problem your target market has, and the solutions you have for each of their specific challenges. This becomes the outline for your book.
• Transfer this list to a table of contents.
• Expand on each point.
• Create a new directory folder on your computer for your eBook project.

Define Your Book Topic
Define your book topic in a one or two sentence description to bring your entire project into focus. Define the core of your message and build everything around that. Create a ‘book hook’ to position yourself as an expert.

Guidelines for Focused Productivity While Writing Your eBook
You will have to have to commit a certain amount of time and take focused, consistent action to achieve results.

• Set an intention and make the commitment to make this project your number one priority
• Focus your writing time: commit to writing in large blocks of time, or at least 2 hours a day, or 3 to 5 pages a day.
• Begin each day with your number one priority – writing your eBook.
• Enroll the support of a writing partner, a group, or a coach.
• You Can Position Yourself As An Expert by Writing An eBook

One of the great advantages of creating a product is that you can position yourself as an expert or specialist in your field by writing an eBook, workbook or program for your niche market.

As an expert, you will be able to charge much higher fees for your services because specialized knowledge and services are much more highly valued than general information.

Positioning yourself as the go-to person in your field is a smart marketing strategy. It takes work, a good plan, and support to achieve expert status, but it’s well worth the effort to take this approach as part of your long-term business development strategy.

The media will call you, associations will ask you to speak at their events, and you will start to stand out, get noticed, and get hired.

Take action today to commit your words to paper – or computer. Start by believing in your own expertise. Then, step-by-step start to position yourself as a credible authority by writing ebooks and other information products. Over time, you can declare expert status.

History of Amazing Woman’s Day

The celebration of Amazing Woman’s Day was first conceived over a decade ago by transformational coach and author Marsh Engle. As the activities, programs and outreach of the Amazing Woman initiative has expanded over the years, the core mission remained the same: To serve as a unifying symbol of women everywhere who wish to bring a sense of value and purpose to their life, their community and the world. It was in March, 2001 that women throughout the United States first joined to establish the Amazing Woman’s Day movement. In 2002 the celebration grew to 50 U.S. cities. A United States Congressional Proclamation acknowledges Amazing Woman’s Day as a movement of inspiration among women, empowering entrepreneurship and creativity. I was at my regular Friday morning yoga class this morning. I have been taking yoga classes for many, many years – long before it was as popular as it is today. Some of you may not know that I am a certified yoga teacher as well as a certified business coach and professional accountant. I taught yoga for 6 or 7 years but stopped when I moved back home across the country a few years ago.

In yoga, we bring our attention and awareness to what already exists, but may be just outside of our awareness right now. For example, as a teacher I used phrases like, “bring your attention to your breath” or “relax into the flow of your out breath” or “find your straight spine”.

It got me thinking about how these concepts could translate into business. I love taking ideas from one discipline and applying them to another. If we used our attention in a different way in our business to focus on what’s already there waiting for us to notice, rather than trying to force what’s no longer working, we would get a different result.

For example, you could apply these statements to your business and:

• bring your attention to the continual flow of abundance that is always coming your way, rather than looking at what’s lacking
• relax into the real, deep connection and flow with yourself and your clients
• find the perfect, abundant business model that already exists as a structure for you and the new direction your business is going

Thinking this way implies that these things already exist for you…the flow, abundance and deep connection with yourself and your clients, the perfect, simple, abundant business model.

All you have to do is to notice and then allow them in. Let go of struggle and allow more abundance, flow and connection into your business.

I’m still enjoying my visit to the west coast of Canada. The Olympics are starting here in a few days, so there’s lots of excitement in the air. I’m getting quite a bit of writing done on my new book and home study program that I’ll be releasing in the next month or two – along with some brand new coaching programs. It’s great to be away from home for a while so I can relax and be in a place where my creativity and focus can flourish.

You’ve heard me say that you need a niche and an expertise in order to grow your business to the next level as well as make your marketing much easier. One of my clients recently told me she felt hesitant to say she was an expert.

Are you one of the many talented women who has so much wisdom and experience to offer, yet lacks the clarity or the inclination to declare expert status? Or, do you have so many interests and abilities that you struggle to simplify your offer and stand out for your specialty?

If so, here’s a simple exercise to narrow down what you’re good at and position yourself to become well known for your expertise. Write your answers to the following three statements:

• Something I’m really passionate about that I like to read and talk about a lot is . . .
• My favorite issues or situations I like to work on with clients are . . .
• If I was asked to speak to a group next week for an hour, the subject I know so well that I could speak about easily with little preparation is . . .

Your answers will give you an indication of your passion, talents and expertise and the specific way you like to help your clients.

Being an expert doesn’t mean you need to have degrees and certifications. That’s the old-style of expert. It just means you really know your stuff and care about sharing what you know with other people to improve their lives.

Get started writing, speaking and reading about what you know and love and you can develop authority status easily in less than a year. This will give you confidence and will give people a way to get to know you and decide to work with you without you having to work so hard to attract more clients.

Just share your passion and wisdom everywhere you go and people will be attracted naturally to you and your message.

After I came back from Tuscany last September, I started the daily ritual of making myself a café au lait in a large bowl every morning. When I was in Italy, I would go down early to the breakfast area each day for my coffee. Some of us started using cereal bowls to drink our café au lait. There was always warm milk in a container as well as coffee on the table.

Slowly sipping my coffee with two hands from a bowl was a lovely way to start each day as I looked out over the vineyards and olive groves onto the surrounding fields and hillsides. It made me feel so calm and peaceful and connected to the beauty all around me.

When I came back home, I maintained the daily ritual of my morning café au lait. I have other rituals of course, such as stretching, meditating and journaling first thing in the morning.

What are the daily rituals that anchor your days?

The mundane rituals as well as the ones that give you the feeling of being connected to something larger than yourself? Those daily actions that connect you to both yourself and to the Universal Energy or to the Divine?

Rituals are a set of actions regularly repeated in a precise manner. Rituals can help us connect with who we really are at our core and guide us in our search for meaning and identity.

The beginning of the year is the perfect time to start – or restart – any rituals that give you a sense of calm, security, peace, connection, love or joy.
