Fender guitar cases generally come in 3 different forms. (Although there was that strange one my cousin Earl jerry-rigged.) Fender Gig Bags, Fender Soft Shell Cases and Fender Hard Shell Cases.

Here’s a breakdown of what each one entails, and tips on how to find a Fender guitar case that’ll keep your strat or telly good as new.

Fender Guitar Cases Option No.1: The Gig Bag

Gig bags used to be ratty old things that wouldn’t protect a car fender, let alone the best guitar in the entire world. Today Fender gig bags are made of much sturdier stuff and can go a long way toward protecting your Fender guitar in transport.

(Photo: Ethan Prater)

Though your modern gig bag is light years away from the cheap crap of the past, it’s still important to look at the gig bag seams. Make sure they are double-stitched, and possibly rolled. This will keep moisture out—and go a long way toward indicating durability.

Another Fender gig bag key is how much storage does itñ offer? I know you think you’ll just need something for your picks and capo and some minor gear, but yo’ud be surprised at how big sheet music/notebooks can get. Get as many storage pockets as you think you’ll need in the future.

Fender Guitar Cases Option No.2: The Soft Shell Case

But sometimes you need more protection than a gig bag can offer; that’s when a Fender soft shell case is ideal for moderate transport of your Fender guitar.

Why? Well…the padding in a gig bag can’t compare to the rigid frame of a soft shell case made from plastic molds. This protects your Fender guitar from any dings and scratches you might pick up along the way.

Inside is where soft fender guitar cases really shine. With a foam interior, your Fender guitar neck won’t be compromised—possibly the mos expensive part of the axe.

And unlike a hard shell guitar, a soft shell case is ultra-portable and light. Making it a great mode of guitar transport for most situations.

Fender Guitar Cases Option No.3: The Hard Shell Case

If you need some serious armor for your guitar than a hard shell Fender guitar case is the way to go.

My general rule for whether to buy a hard shell versus a soft shell is will I be able to reach/see my Fender guitar while travelling.

If it’s in the backseat somewhere, or I’m just lugging it around than a soft shell case should do just fine.

But if I’m flying on an airplane or throwing my axe in the undercarriage of a bus then I definitely go with a hard shell fender case.

Yes, hard shell fender guitar cases are seriously heavy. But all that bulk gives you super added protection. (I dropped my case into a pool oncefor a gig—and the guitar was totally fine.

So no matter what level of protection you go far, be sure to go with fender guitar cases over the generic. You’ll know it fits your geetar perfectly, and rest easy in the knowledge your prized possession is safe.

My bassist Scott says his kind never get any love, so here you go. So here’s my semi-qualified review of Fender Guitar Cases for bassists who complain about the tiniest little thing. He thinks it’s great. He especially likes the fact it works for both precision and jazz-style basses. (He doesn’t need 2 fender guitar cases for his vast array.) And the less your bassist complains, the better. Why can’t they all be quiet and homely like John Paul Jones.

Brand new Fender electric bass guitar gig bag that will accomodate a wide variety of makes and models of electric basses. Great for Precision and Jazz style basses!! Features include: 12mm foam padding, durable exterior and interior covering, shoulder strap, accessory compartment, screened logo, and strategically place easy grip handles. Dimensions of the bag (LxW) are 51 1/2"x 18" (at widest point)

This fender guitar case is a perfect overall gig bag for carrying around your precious sonic cargo. The answer, friends, is to bag that bad boy in a Fender Standard Series gig bag that gets you to the party with efficiency and style. Behold its heavy-duty nylon, 15 mm padding, adjustable shoulder straps, well-placed easy grip handle and roomy accessory compartment with -nice touch here- a large die-cast Fender guitar pick-shaped zipper pull. For awhile I was using my gig bag–not quite enough protection for luggign my band’s gear around. Then we played an outdoor gig and I frickin’ dropped my dreadnought in the pool. Panic. Hysteria. Everyone looked at me. And though as fender guitar cases go, it was a little wonky, wouldn’t you know that guitar was as dry as when I bought it. Since then, I use nothing else. This is one serious Hardshell case.

Covered with black textured vinly, this hard-shell case will absolutely keep your guitar up and running.
