Now that Tomii won the title Miss Universe Bahamas, this fabulously piece will be seen before a global audience at the next Miss Universe! "Tomii and I have known each other for a while and certainly she's aware that Javotte House of Couture produces unique designs. She engaged me after her entry in the Miss Universe hoping for a design that might increase her chances of the win," said Bethel. "She said she was open to my creativity and would fully support my concept." Miss Universe Bahamas 2014 was not her first pageant either, as she's had five designs grace the international stage. She also assists in the junior pageants and specializes in designs from hat making to wedding or prom dress making. She's had the privilege of designing dresses for the Prime Minister's wife, Mrs. Bernadette Christie. We also need to mention that this year's Miss Universe Bahamas' gown was also designed by Bethel and won in that category. "I feel again honoured to represent the country, and the Miss Bahamas Organization continues to extend an opportunity for me to showcase and compete internationally through fashion and costume design, which definitely keeps me motivated," said Bethel. The 'Sea Goddess' piece required a team of three and took one week to complete. The costume has a metallic base with a Styrofoam cover as to not hinder her movement. Bethel describes her creation, "The coral in the clam shape was sprayed with our aquatic theme colours and adorned with sheer fabric. We then individually placed pearls, diamonds, shells, and stones over the entire piece. The bodysuit needed to continue in this same theme and so we completed it with the same seashell finish." The costume is valued around $4,000. With Miss Universe Bahamas behind her, Bethel eagerly awaits the international Miss Universe pageant, but remains busy as ever in her business. Naked truth about Biopic Yves St. Laurent Hedonistic Life featured at Cannes Film Festival.

It might come as a surprise in a film about a deceased fashion designer who spent vast amounts of his life thinking about couture, but one of the most, if not the most, memorable scenes in the new biopic, Saint Laurent, shows a young Yves Saint Laurent completely naked as he walks towards his partner, Pierre Bergé (clad in a black satin dressing gown that reveals his tanned behind), before the young lovers jump on the bed for a romp. Despite the provocative nature of this and other racy sex scenes in the film, which was directed by Bertrand Bonello (of Le Pornographe fame) and premiered at the Festival de Cannes on Saturday, the real controversy surrounding the production has to do with the clothing. What else!

Early on, the Bonello production incurred the wrath of Saint Laurent’s long-term partner Pierre Bergé, who threatened in WWD to sue the film if it copied any of the designer’s outfits—a bit hard to avoid when making a coming-of-age movie about YSL’s life and work. The filmmakers, on their part, have accused Bergé of distributing letters to parties associated with the film to try to stop it. To this end, Bergé has refused to allow Bonello’s team to consult the brand’s archives. He also publically endorsed another biopic, Yves Saint Laurent, which debuted in January and was directed by Jalil Lespert. The Fondation Pierre Bergé-Yves Saint Laurent lent the rival film a reported 77 vintage outfits and Bergé helped conduct a scene depicting the legendary 1976 Ballet Russes fashion show. The resulting headlines in the French press declared war between the two films.

Yves Saint Laurent: Lots of style and a scarcity of substance

27 Mar 2014: The French fashion designer's biopic boasts talented actors and immaculate costume recreations, but it also features boring fashionistas doing boring things, which kills the story's tension, writes ©ourtesy of Alex von Tunzelmann.

The film begins in Oran, French Algeria, in 1957. Young pied-noir Yves Saint Laurent (Pierre Niney) moves to Paris to work for couturier Christian Dior. He hangs out with model Victoire Doutreleau (Charlotte le Bon) and designer Karl Lagerfeld (Nikolai Kinski). Victoire tries it on with Yves, clambering on top of him at a table in a nightclub. "How juvenile," says Karl. All three of them end up platonically in bed together, though it's clear Yves prefers chaps. Enter Pierre Bergé (Guillaume Gallienne), who will become both his business partner and his life partner.

The film's scenes of the two men's courtship are sweet, understated and touching, as the painfully shy Yves is coaxed out of his shell by the quietly forceful Pierre. The relationship's complexities are performed beautifully and subtly by Niney and Gallienne. But their honeymoon ends abruptly when Yves is conscripted to serve in the Algerian war.

Saint Laurent lasted only 20 days in the army before suffering a collapse during his induction. He was, as the film shows, moved to a military psychiatric hospital. The film hints at his treatment being counterproductive: it consisted of drug and electroshock therapy. There is no doubt Saint Laurent's experience was awful for him personally, but it's striking that the film avoids any wider engagement with the situation in Algeria – aside from showing the famille Saint Laurent's great sadness at having to leave when the rebels win. It is taken as read here that the real tragedy of French colonialism in Africa was that it ended. If you want to know more about the Algerian war, turn this fluff off and watch The Battle of Algiers – truly a classic of historical film-making.

In 1965, Yves comes up with his Mondrian collection – cocktail dresses inspired by the lines and colours of Dutch abstract painter Piet Mondrian – and hits the big time. This is great news for Yves, who is suddenly surrounded by all the wealth, beauty and glamour he could want - a glittering world immaculately recreated by an exceptional team of production and costume designers. Unfortunately, it is disastrous for the film. The characters you may have given a damn about – Pierre and Yves – are submerged by a tide of pointless, flimsy hangers-on, who can only be of interest to the nerdiest of fashion nerds. Their conversation is desperately dull and self-regarding. To relieve the boredom, everybody does drugs and has sex with each other. It doesn't help, because they have boring drugs and boring sex, and anyway there is simply no tension left in the story.

Fashion

Yves falls ill, and squabbles with Pierre. The film attempts to dredge up what it can of a narrative drive from the Slough of Despond in which it has mired itself, but all it can find is Saint Laurent's 1976 Russian ballet and opera collection. In what is supposed to be a triumphal moment, he sends models down a catwalk in jewelled bolero waistcoats, bell-sleeved shirts, enormous puffy trousers and big furry hats. Frankly this looks to an untrained eye like a load of grown women dressed up as organ-grinders' monkeys. Admittedly, historians are not generally noted for their fashion leadership; indeed, should they linger too long on park benches, some distinguished professors at our great universities could be mistaken for tramps. In academia, this is a source of much pride.

Relevance

The film implies that Saint Laurent died pretty much straight after the 1976 show, though actually he lived for another 32 years. Still, it has outstayed its welcome by this point, and the swift end is appreciated. In an apparent attempt to retrofit itself with wider relevance, it bangs some title cards on the end making a few lofty claims about how Yves Saint Laurent single-handedly invented feminism, ended the cold war and freed Nelson Mandela, or something. A bit de trop.

Today Nicolas Ghesquiere took the Louis Vuitton cruise collection to the catwalk for the very first time. For such a grand occasion, an equally grand backdrop was needed and with the world’s starriest of stars currently holding court in the French Riveira the Palais Princier Monaco was, naturally, the perfect location. When Ghesquiere showed his first collection for the legendary house during Paris Fashion Week in February, he certainly made his mark by showing his collection in a pared-back manner. And despite the swanky setting for the Cruise 2015 show, the same execution applied.

Set within a glass box room, the catwalk was lined by swirling couches and only one row deep, such was the exclusivity of the event. With minimal seating the guest list read like a list of who’s who of the A-list with actresses including Jennifer Connelly, Adele Exarchopoulos and Charlotte Gainsbourg joining the likes of Anna Wintour. And, of course, being in Monaco, there was a touch of royalty too in the shape of Charlene, Princess on Monaco, who kindly opened the doors of her palace for Ghesquiere and his pilgrims.
The collection, stomping down a video rock pool floor, ranged from bold ’70s-esque wallpaper two pieces to dresses that could have been served in from the palace tennis court. If the wallpaper patterns were not seen in the attire they were given a supporting role in the accessories. High waist trousers with exposed LV emblazoned zips also made an appearance, in the collections’ stand out colour, lemon yellow. In turn, each and every piece was either offset by lashings of leather or subtle layering.

Vika Gazinskaya is a driving force in Moscow’s style revolution. Now she is joining forces with Swedes & Other Stories, says Rebecca Gonsalves.

Much has been made of the so-called Russian revolution in fashion these past few years – but it’s not just a case of designers courting customers with plenty of roubles to flash as an influx of designers, stylists, journalists, bloggers and models proves the country has come a long way from its state-rationed sartorial past. And so, once obscure Russian names are becoming gradually more familiar to those who enjoy seeking out interesting additions to the style world.

One such name is Vika Gazinskaya, a finalist for the inaugural LVMH prize supporting young designers for her Moscow-manufactured eponymous range. Gazinskaya cut her teeth with a year-long placement at glossy magazine L’Officiel Russia followed by a stint working as a stylist for MTV, before creating her debut collection for spring/summer 2007. Known for her voluminous shapes and light touch, the vegetarian designer eschews the use of leather and fur for ready-to-wear collections she presents during Paris Fashion Week. Fans of Gazinskaya’s rarefied designs will be pleased to learn that they are about to get accessible, thanks to a collaboration with & Other Stories, the Swedish brand that has proved a welcome addition since it reached these shores just over a year ago. “I really wanted to give people the opportunity to get my prints at an affordable price,” says Gazinskaya of the crayon strokes, colourful polka dots and pencil-line dandelion prints, which are resplendent across classic dresses, trousers, tops and scarves as well as wedge court shoes.

The bold silhouettes of the designer’s main line are not eschewed entirely – red and black dresses are perfect for the formal events of summer, while a crisp belted mac is given an interesting twist with the addition of a circular cape.

Stella McCartney is the perfect role model for young fashion entrepreneurs, says a report by the British Fashion Council

Young British designers should emulate Silicon Valley and Stella McCartney and view the launch of a fashion brand as an entrepreneurial venture – not solely a creative endeavour – according to a report published today by The British Fashion Council. Titled Commercialising Creativity – Creating a Model for Success for British Fashion Designers, the paper claims that there is a dearth of guidance available to fashion designers starting their own businesses, an anomaly in an industry that employs almost 800,000 people and makes £26bn annually.

"Our ambition is that future generations of designers will understand how to create a business plan and source investment in the same way the tech industry does," said BFC CEO Caroline Rush. Rush added that the findings would help young designers "evaluate the kind of business they want to be and the questions they should be addressing from the start."

Written by Alessandra Basso and Alejandra Caro, MBA students from London Business School, the report is the result of hours of interviews with designers, retailers, advisors, PRs and investors, and gives seven key recommendations for fashion business growth.
They are:

• Behave as a business, not as an artisan.
• Recognise the importance of product development.
• Develop the brand's identity and support it with a marketing and communications plan.
• Understand and address the challenges of production.
• Develop a focused sales and distribution strategy.
• Understand the importance of cashflow, funding and financing.
• Secure specialist business partners .

It includes case studies on the story behind British fashion success stories including Nicholas Kirkwood – the shoe designer in which luxury conglomerate LVMH has recently acquired a stake – and McCartney, concluding that much of her success has been due to her unique position as a brand. With McCartney's committed ethical stance – using organic materials to create luxury products, including non-leather shoes – she "sells a sense of moral satisfaction to her customers, and people love her for it, "the paper says. The report also addresses issues such as finding the right business partner and understanding the importance of costing. Joseph Velosa chairman Matthew Williamson says: "We dedicate many meetings to analysing costing and set up prices because if you get that wrong, you potentially lose thousands of pounds ... If something doesn't make a margin, unless it's a very beautiful piece, you take it out of the collection." It also urges the government to consider giving tax incentives for investment in fashion design and access to funding to help designers' businesses grow.
Today's release marks a new partnership between the London Business School and the British Fashion Council. Through this relationship, "we aim to encourage more MBA graduates to pursue rewarding careers in the sector, working with British designers to assist them in fulfilling their potential for growth," said Rush

The top 10 looks from the TFI new designer showdown

The Toronto Fashion Incubator swept four of its most promising young designers onto the runway this week as part of the group’s annual New Labels competition. Toronto-based Christopher Paunil, Laura Siegel (a Fashion Week veteran), Nomad of the Sun and AliceAzur each showed their best, most carefully-honed pieces before a panel of judges and a room of fashion insiders. The prize: $25,000 in cash, an editorial in FLARE Magazine, and a professionally-produced lookbook.
Who came out on top? That would be AliceAzur’s Miriam Baker, a recent Ryerson grad, who was met with a huge hug from her visibly-moved folks at the end of the runway after accepting her prize. (Aww.) But the competition was stiff; prize or no, you’ll be seeing more of the runners-up yet.
Here are my picks for the top 10 looks from TFI New Labels 2014.
ABOVE: Nomad Of The Sun’s Ashley Boutcher focuses on swimwear tailor-made for lounging glamorously by the poolside. Her geometric suits were often layered under flowing chiffon – in this case, black sheer trousers and a plunging-front swimsuit made for ’70s-style glamour.

Part of Baker’s winning formula was her ability to dress bustier women; AliceAzur is designed to fit women with a D-cup bust or larger. This flowing, minimal jersey-and-tweed look made all that careful tailoring look effortless.

Laura Siegel’s fall/winter 2014 collection slayed at Fashion Week, and her bohemian pieces – rendered in dark, desaturated green and sea blue – were given new life on the TFI runway with some slick styling. Siegel’s oversized coat – the perfect armour against a gloomy day in the city – is woven from recycled saris and dyed with cocoa.

When Christopher Paunil’s first look – this showstopping black gown – swept onto the runway, more than a few folks in the audience were already envisioning a victory. (Their bridal collection is being carried at the new Kleinfeld store – maybe we’ll be seeing a white version in stores?)

She showed some more outlandish looks, including A-line eyelet gowns topped off with feathered chokers – but AliceAzur’s cable-knit sweater and floaty organza circle skirt, while relatively understated, was the epitome of ladylike Tippi Hedren chic (killer birds not included).

Boutcher’s show took a Bond-girl turn with Nomad of the Sun’s red diamond-front bikini and tie-side bottoms.

Christopher Paunil’s collection was all about opulence, including the fur pieces contributed by veteran Canadian designer Farley Chatto. Look closely underneath: black leather harnesses topped off several Paunil’s gowns for a tougher touch (Zana Bayne-style).

About that tailoring at AliceAzur: The girlishness of this Wednesday Addams-style tweed dress is nicely subverted by the razor-sharp cut. Baker may have just out-Pink-Tartaned Pink Tartan.

Amid the strappy, wrappy, high-waisted suits on the Nomad Of The Sun runway, Boucher sent out a seemingly-demure blocked, panelled one-piece sexed up with mesh side inserts and a tiny cutout. It’s flattering and fashion-forward – in short, it could make even your average non-model look fierce come beach season.

Laura Siegel’s hand-dyed grid-print silk was a favourite motif of mine in her fall/winter collection; here, it’s used to full, graphic effect. Siegel’s pieces are made in collaboration with artisans from Asia and South America, but even the most modern of dressers would fall for the sharp print and draped silhouette.

New York Fashion Week here, with just a few days left before normal life turns into an elbow-jabbing, style-frenzied, cocktail-heavy New York Fashion Week we can’t help but think of the exciting things to come. January has flown past us quicker than Mo Farah, but we’re ready to pack our cold-weather kit and get FROWing. There are many things to look forward – or hope for – during NYFW: we’ll even see the silver lining of the frosty situation as on streets, it does, after all, generate some impressive winter dressing. 1: New York Fashion Week: Kim Kardashian and Kanye FRONT ROW Action.

Especially considering Yeezus is still reportedly on a mission to get KK onto the front cover of US Vogue. May the match-matchy super-stealthy outfit parade commence. Stilettos in sub-zero temperatures shall soon become the norm.

2: Manolo Blahnik and Sarah Jessica Parker’s Shoe Line Will Be Officially Revealed IN THE FLESH @ New York Fashion Week.

A shoe collaboration made in heaven, quite possibly even crafted by little fashion industry cherubs, will surely be the toast of the town. We’re talking of course about Manolo Blahnik pairing up with SJP. Although we’ve already seen the full collection pics online, this is the chance to try ‘em out for real. The actress has famously long been a fan of the designer’s stilettos since her days as Carrie in Sex and the City, so expect snaking queues of superfans when they launch in a pop up shop in Nordstrom on March 2.

3: Inspiration For Snow-Ready Style – Should It Come To The UK.

Whether kitted up to their eyeballs in all-terrain (but ultra-luxe) protective gear or madly ignoring chillblains in bare legs and mini skirts, the New York fashion pack know how to breeze through the brr with Uptown sass. Last year some ladies were even carried across sidewalks to enable their high heel habit – if anyone ever questioned the dedication of fashion eds…

4: Stuart Vevers’ First Coach Collection – It’s Gonna Be ‘It’ Bag Mania.

The uber-talented Mr Vevers will show his debut collection for American leathergoods megalith, Coach. Expect new ‘it’ bags within minutes of touchdown, peeps.

5: Being Close To The Clarins Crew.

We can’t help it; this glossy posse of a family is just too fabulous not to coo over each and every season.

6: New Labels To Love. Write Them Down NOW.

7: Alexander Wang Is Gonna Hang In Brooklyn, Baby.

Veering right off the regular schedule, Mr Wang will stage his first ever show in this hipster part of town at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Well, it makes sense doesn’t? His business must be booming in those parts. Apparently the space really correlates with the concept of the collection. What does that mean exactly? Has Wang grown a beard?

8: Karlie Kloss Will (Hopefully) Go Insta-Cray

Jenny Cleeton has spoken to the designer, from Glasgow Clyde, who was recently named by Vogue as ‘the one to watch’ at the event.

Backed by House of Fraser, Glasgow Clyde fashion graduate, Rebecca Torres is looking to the future for her next big event during London Fashion Week.

After studying at Glasgow Clyde College, Rebecca Torres has shot to success after being named by Vogue as “the one to watch” after Asos bought her entire collection in 2011, “They asked if they could show it [the collection] to Asos,” Torres comments after receiving a call from an old university associate, “The next thing I knew Asos wanted to buy my entire collection.” Torres was put on the website as her own person rather than by Asos which meant she started receiving calls frequently which is what prompted her to make her own website with the help of her brother.

The room which is known as ‘the incubator’ where Torres works is lined with material, dresses and mannequins as she sits at her large desk working. Torres has the radio playing in the background to fill the silence of the large room which she might one day share with another successful student.
Talking about inspirations and other designers, Torres comments on her love for a clean cut style but also is a fan of bright colours which is obvious from her pieces. When asked who inspired her it she stumbles a bit as she thinks, “I don’t have a background in prints or textiles but on photoshop I came up with it and just went for it.” There is many inspirations for Torres though as she comments on a collaboration she did with Pomeroy Saskia which was where she got the idea to put the designs together, “When I saw her prints and my panelling I came up with the idea.” Torres also talks about her love for Manish Arora, “I would say he inspired me.” She says before continuing, “The colours he uses are really wacky and he is very vibrant which is obviously why I am so attracted.” The colour comparison in both Arora’s designs and Torres’s are both prominent throughout their designs with a love to show clothes that make people look and admire the colour and confidence in a piece.
Torres’s pieces are mainly fitted to the silhouette however she is hoping to try and introduce new pieces in the next collection saying, “I don’t want to miss anyone out, some people don’t necessarily want to wear fitted dresses.” She has already shown a change over the years introducing skirts and tops to the collection as well as changing the style slightly in her limited edition selection. Unlike some designers seen on the catwalk these days, Torres designs wearable clothes for both through the day and at night, “I think the collections are quite versatile.” she comments, “I wouldn’t design them if I wasn’t going to wear them myself.” Torres is quite often seen in her own clothes both daily and at nights, “I like to wear my own clothing so that I can say ‘oh it’s mine!’” Torres says with a smile.
Currently working on her new website and invites to her upcoming events in Glasgow’s St Enochs on the 6th of February and her showing thanks to the Princes Trust in London during London Fashion week in March, Torres is as busy as ever saying, “Sometimes you need to take a wee moment to yourself.’ Adding, “If someone was to tell me 5 years ago I’d be in Vogue I wouldn’t have believed them.”

The company was started by Italian designers Domenico Dolce (born 13 August 1958 in Polizzi Generosa, Sicily) and Stefano Gabbana (born 14 November 1962 in Milan). By 2005 their turnover was €597 million. The two met in Milan in 1980 and worked for the same fashion house. In 1982 they established a designer consulting studio; in time it grew to become “Dolce & Gabbana”.
