Hard to Filter Out Porn Images

It's hard to filter out pornographic images.

Clearswift is an early player in this field, and probably offers one of the best filters, which it calls ImageManager. As a practical matter, ImageManager catches about 80% or so of porn images. The problem is that things like kitchen cabinets can be hard to differentiate from a georgeous, flimsily clad woman ... er, at least, for a computer.

This doesn't mean the technology is useless. Clearswift customers find it useful for trend analysis. It can flag people who seem to be getting an unusual level of porn, so that they can be alerted to this, or a spot check can be made. ... David Ferris

Intradyn Email Archiving

Intradyn is an email archiving vendor. Here's a quick summary:

Sells two products:
- Orca Email Archiver, aimed at organizations with up to about 500 employees. The active archive is not expandable beyond hard disk capacity (.5GB & 1TB), except you can offload older emails to tape and retain metadata searchable in the archive.
- Compliance Vault, aimed at organizations with 500 to 5,000+ employees. Can expand the active archive (70+TB) and processing power, RAM, etc., by adding xSeries clustered storage (shipping Q3 2008).
Both are delivered as appliance.
Main focus is email archiving; some instant messaging support provided.
75% of business is through OEMs such as Mirapoint, Secure Computing, and Tangent; 25% of business is direct.
Financials not disclosed. Ferris Research estimates revenues at $5 million annually. CEO Brent Bowlby says revenues are growing at 100% annually.
Competitors include Mimosa, Symantec, and sometimes ArcMail and Barracuda.

Strengths include:

Works with many email systems: Exchange, Notes/Domino, GroupWise, pure POP/IMAP, etc.
Outlook plugin provides very natural end-user experience. Includes tools for Exchange PST file migration and also restores back to message store.
Support for Japanese characters; Korean and Chinese soon to be available.
Use of Sony's distribution channel.
Attachment de-duplication; reduces the message store by about 80%.
Can quickly bring on new OEM; experience in providing OEM support.

Policy Definition Key DLP Evaluation Criteria

The mechanisms used to define policy definition are one of the most important things to consider when evaluating a data loss prevention technology.

Amazingly, only about 25% of prospective customers cross-examine DLP vendors on this topic. That's a big mistake. Ask your vendor to provide a demo. Then take some policies you'll need to implement, see how you implement them with the product, and run a series of tests against it to see how well the definitions are performing. ... David Ferris

JetBlue to Push Email

In a recent Wall Street Journal article, it was announced that JetBlue Airways Corp.'s LiveTV Unit has agreed to buy Verizon Communications Inc.'s Airfone network. Airfone owns and operates 100 air-to-ground communications towers in the continental United States. The move will boost LiveTV's ability to offer email and other broadband messaging services on its airplanes.

Together JetBlue, American, Continental, and Virgin America are conducting tests of Wi-Fi connectivity for email and instant messaging on their airplanes. There are two providers of air-to-ground communications for airline use. One is Airfone and the other is AirCell LLC, based in Itasca, Ill.

This announcement is very significant for all airline travelers, especially business travelers who will benefit from having access to email during long flights. Email access will be a welcome service on airplanes, but is it not clear yet how much the service will cost. Let's hope it's not as expensive as the original credit-card-operated phones that disappeared in part due to the high cost of the service. ... Bob Spurzem

Microsoft Pushes for Exchange Online

In a 5/16/08 Reuters interview, Microsoft Senior Vice President Chris Capossela said that he expects more and more companies to abandon their in-house messaging systems and shift to "cloud computing" as a less expensive alternative. Capossela made the claim that, "in five years 50 percent of our Exchange mailboxes will be Exchange Online." Considering this accounts for over 150 million mailboxes, that is a very significant claim.

A shift of this magnitude will have a ripple effect over the industry. First, it will impact the job demands for Exchange Administrators. As more and more companies pull the plug on their Exchange Servers, the demand for administrators will decrease. Second, it will impact the entire food chain of resellers, system integrators, and third-party vendors who supply software and services to support in-house Exchange. And finally, it will directly compete with existing Exchange hosting providers with a much lower cost of goods.

We can only speculate why Microsoft would make such a dramatic change to its existing Exchange business. Perhaps it is in response to competition by Google Gmail. Or maybe this is just part of a major IT shift to cloud computing. No matter what the reason is, it is a clear sign that the role of in-house IT is changing. ... Bob Spurzem

Orchestria's Schizophrenic DLP Policy Definition

Orchestria is a leading vendor of data leak prevention technology. The company has a nicely schizophrenic approach to policy definition. There are two user interfaces:

One for the nasty bits, where you use a human-unfriendly scripting language to define the catch filters and such.
One that defines the easier things, like whether the filter triggers a block or a warning, and the string that's presented to the user.

Architecturally, that feels right. All things being equal, it's good to shield as much of the nasty bits from users and administrators. Geeks (e.g., perhaps your harmless correspondent) exist to deal with the nasty bits. ... David Ferris
