Xperia X1's large (3-inch) touchscreen (see previous slide) exemplifies another handset trend. But it also lets you navigate via an optical joystick underneath the display. When closed, this Sony Ericsson's metal-finish rear case shows nothing but the lens of its 3.2-megapixel camera (above, left). however the X1 does have an unusual design feature: It slides open ways in a gentle arc (above, right) to reveal a roomy portrait-mode keyboard. As with other sideways sliders, the display adjusts automatically.

Just a few months ago Asus rocked the ultraportable market with the release of the EEE PC 701. At the beyond-reasonable price of $399, the 701 came armed with a verstile Linux operating system and tons of handy applications.

Now Asus has released a new version of the tiny wonder. The EEE PC surf 4G ditches the glitchy webcam of its predecessor and simultaneously sheds a few bucks as well. For $349, the coffee house-bound user gets a two-pound portable with a seven-inch display and 4GB solid state drive. First Impressions

It's really, really thin. Like nano thin. And yet the Macbook AIr packs in a full size keyboard and one of the biggest and most versatile touchpads we've ever used. We spent a few minutes with the thinnest notebook on earth and came away mighty impressed with its design and snappy performance. You do make a few trade-offs for the size, but we imagine most prospective buyers won't care.

The MacBook Air is Lighter Than
The aluminum body feels rock solid and yet super light. there's a lot of computer inside this 3-pound chassis. And the keyboard has plenty of depth despite the system's 0.76-inch profile.

Vibrant Display
The13.3- inch LED display is positively brilliant. The viewing angles were superb, and photos looked very crisp. Another nice touch is the ambient light sensor, which adjust the backlight both on the keyboard and the display .Air 5.

MacBook Air Specifications
In terms of specs, the Macbook Air is certainly no slouch. The base $1,799 model ships with a 1.6-GHz processor. 2GB of RAM. and a 1.8-inch 80GB hard drive. The 64GB solid drive is $999 just by itself, so you'll want to think twice before plunking down the extra cash. We'll be asking Apple if its 5-hour battery life claim is for the SSD model only or the hard drive model, too.

The top-of-the-line configuration features a 1.8-GHz processor and the 64GB SSD. That brings the total to a whopping $3,098. That's basically executives-only territory, but certainly in line with other lightweight machines with similar specs.

Padang is the capital of West Sumatra; and gateway to the homeland of Minangkabau. Its bustling harbours a crossroads for rubber, cinnamon, coffee, tea and nutmeg. There are Minang houses, prehistoric artifacts, ceramics, manuscripts and modern art. In Kampung Cina (Chinatown) you can wander streets lined ith turn-of-the century houses, Chinese herbalist and coffee shops. Good hiking and wonderful views of the city can be had Bukit Monyet and Gunung Padang.

Toshiba Responds: Blu-Ray On the Way?

Toshiba was the first to get back to me about what it is expecting to do with its HD-DVD laptops. I guess their people had the most time to think about the answer. Either way, here is Toshiba's response to our question. The answers in italics are NOT official comments of Toshiba; they are what we anticipate they really wanted to answer.

Is Toshiba planning on discontinuing HD-DVD drives in its laptops?

Yes.( We apologize to the suckers who bought our nice looking systems with HD drives. We hope you like old movies.)

When will Toshiba stop selling computers with HD drives?

No confirmed date yet. (We plan to keep them on the market until we sell out. We wasted a whole lot of money an this HD-DVD thing. Maybe we can still fool the late adopters.)

And switch to Blu-Ray?

Toshiba will explore alternative HD options for its customers. (It will take us months before we can actually say "alternative to HD-DVD" without crying. The format that starts with a B and ends with a Ray will be available sometime soon in our laptops.)

Hands-on With The Alienware m15x: Penryn Power Quite the Light Show

We just our lucky paws on Alienware's shiny new Area-51 m 15x, arguably the most powerful 15.4-inch notebook on the planet. It's the first mobile rig with this screen size that boasts Intel's blazing 45nm Intel Core2 Extreme mobile proccessor X9000. And it's the first laptop in this class to cram in Nividia's GeFOrce 8800M GTX graphics card, complete with a whopping 512MB of dedicated video memory. (Take that, Crysis!) We'll be bringing you our first 3D and gaming benchmark results ASAP, but in the meantime we wanted to share some hands-on impressions of m15x' unique design. Today, Dell unveiled the latest addition to its notebook catalog: the slim and stylish XPS M1530. Starting at under 6 pounds and measuring less than an inch thick, this machine offers mores power and screen real estate than 13.3-inchXPS M1330.

Available un Tuxedo Black, Crimson Red, and Alphine White, the 15.4-inch XPS M1530 can be outfitted with a slot -loading optical drive (standard-definition or $600 for Blu-ray), Nividia graphics with up to 256MB of video memory, and a 2-megapixel webcam. DEHYDRATION & SUNBURN

The sun is strong throughout the year in the country. Proper care againts sunburn must be constantly taken. Dehydration and loss of salt through pespiration are two other common problems for the unprepared travell. Drink plenty of fluids and replace your salt loss. Make sure you pack clothing suitable for a warm humid climate.

MOSQUITOES

Due to the constant humid climate, mosquitoes tend to be present throughout the year. The three most significant diseases transmitted by mosquitoes are Malaria, Dengue Fever and Japanese B Encephalitis. To repel mosquitoes, ticks and other arthropods, apply an insect repellent containing DEET to your skin or clothing.

The risk of malaria for most tourists visiting Peninsular Malaysia is extremly samll. There is insignificant risk in Kula Lumpur, Penang and other major cities. However, in East Malaysia, The risk of malaria is present throughout the year. Even in these regions, the risk is mainly off the coastal plains and towards the border areas. Generally, prophylaxis is recommended for those visiting Sabah or Sarawak.

YELLOW FEVER

There is no risk of yellow fever in Malaysia. A cetificate of yelllow fever vaccination is required for entry if you are coming from countries in South America or sub-Sahara Africa.

FOOD

Generally, the level of food hygiene throughout the country is high. However, make sure your food and drinking water are safe. Food from street vendors should be treated with care. Drink only bottled or boiled water, or carbonated (bubbly) drinks in cans or bottles. If possible, avoid tap water, fountain drinks, and ice cubes. Bring along iodine tablets and portable water filters to purify water if bottled water is not available. Also, wash your hands often with soap and water. As an extra precaution, bring along anti-diarrhoea medication and an antibiotic prescribed by your doctor to self-treat moderate to severe diarrhoea.

VACCINATIONS

Recommended vaccines:
Poliomyelitis (childhood booster)
Tetanus (childhood booster)
Typhoid (food & water borne diseases)
Hepatitis A (food & water borne diseases)

For those venturing outside cities and towns, futher recommended vaccines are Heapatitis B, Rabbies, Japanese B Encephalitis, Tuberculosis and Meningitis. For those visiting Sabah and Sarawak, Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended.

West sumatra is one of the most beautiful areas of Indonesia. It is mountainous and divided by three valleys. There are lovely lakes and spectacular volcanoes. But Minangkabau land is very special and has the most friednly population group of Indonesia. They love to talk with visitors and will tell us about their unique society. If a visitor tries to understand the culture and Minang traditions he will soon feel himself a member of the clan. He will be invited as a guest to their homes - a unique way to become acquainted with real Indonesia life. Most of our hosts and hostesses are English teachers so language will not be much of a problem. They will show us the community and explain their customs.

The land of the Minangkabau, West Sumatrahas a distinct culture, which distinguishes it from the rest of the isaland. A land of scenic beauty with blue green lakes and mountains, West Sumatra's Center of Culture and tourism is Bukittinggi in the highlands, north of the provincial capital of Padang. Most prominent in the landscape is the horn-shaped roofs of the houses nestled in the coconut groves. The name Minangkabau means triumphant buffalo. It leads a community and family life based on a matrilineal system, which clusters around mosques and the taraditional houses. As it is the women who have the propertise, the men are known for their wanderlust and entrepreneur ship. Traveling is Considered a mark of success and therefore many6 of them are found "merantau" (emigrated) to other parts of country. This is proof that many Minang or Padang restaurant, serve very spicy food, found in all major towns in the nation. The people are hospitable and eloquent in a poetic style of speech and ceremonies. Festivals are colorful occasions.

West Sumatra has a coastline where the capital is situated. The hinterland is a range of high mountains, which dip into picturesque valley and lakes. Pagaruyung, (the art centers for silver, hand-weaving, embroidery and woodcarving).
