It's FETC time again! This year we will bring back our Florida-Georgia District educators' gathering on Thursday of FETC. Come on over to the Rosen Centre, right across the street from the Orange County Convention Center.

We'll meet around 6 PM for drinks and fellowship. Come meet other Florida-Georgia Lutheran educators who are also attending FETC. I'll be there to greet you and to convene our little gathering.

Drop me an email (fetcflga -at- gmail.com), voice mail, or text (239-244-1354) if you're going to be at FETC, or to hook up for the Thursday evening gathering, Jan. 30, 2014 at the Rosen Centre Lobby Bar. I hope to see you there!

I was all set to go, but my wife fell and broke her knee (ouch)! So, now look for Jamie Wagner on Wednesday night at the Rosen Centre. Everything else remains the same as posted previously, including the posting of your notes and audio (or pictures) on this blog. Please send them to me as mentioned in the previous post.

I'll miss being there with you this year, but look forward to reading and listening to your posts!

FETC 2013 Florida-Georgia District Gathering

FETC is just a couple of weeks away, and many of us are registered and waiting for the upcoming ed-tech conference. For those Lutheran educators who plan to attend, there's a special Wednesday (Jan. 30, 2013) evening gathering planned for you, with "your first drink courtesy of the Florida-Georgia District" (sponsored by Bob Ziegler, Lutheran Administrator's Association president). Walk across the street from the Orange County Convention Center to the Rosen Centre lobby lounge. We will meet immediately following concurrent session 6, which ends at 5 PM. Walk out the front door, across International Drive, and into the Rosen Centre lounge. It's a couple of steps down into the lounge area. Look for me — Paul Schwan — I'll be there with your "free drink" ticket!

I just called the Rosen Centre, and they told me that if you say you're meeting someone in the lobby lounge for drinks, they'll let you park in the Rosen Centre parking lot for free. Tell them you're with FETC.

If you email me I'll give you my phone/text number so we can meet up. Or, use my google voice number to leave a voice or text message (be sure to include your name and contact info in the message). Either way, I hope to see you there!

Assessing Academic Achievement Through Fun and Games

Creating Challenge-Based Learning for Secondary Students

Purpose: The focus of this session is on creating a senior project. Students do a lot of understanding, starting in 9th grade, how to prepare for their own lives and careers.

A. Students naturally only scan the top and right side of a webpage
B. Encourage alternate search engines (not just Google)

II. Awareness

A. Helping students to understand copyright and when they can/cannot use others' materials

III. When to begin

A. Know when you want students to understand a certain concept and when they need to begin the process to be successful.

IV. Researching ideas

A. How to research a topic with more than one answer

1. Finding topics that are not right or wrong
2. Gives students the ownership over their position and direction through the project

V. Advice

A. Start out small with a "big idea"
1. Think about how to write authentic questions
B. Work within your school and with other teachers.

FETC 2012
For the first time I was able to register during the "early bird" discount period for the upcoming FETC, held in Orlando on January 24-26, 2012. I always enjoy my time at FETC, as it focuses on educational technology. I enjoy using the tech tools that kids of today have grown up with, and I find that today's kids take for granted some of the tools we adults must learn to use.

Following the two days of keynotes and sessions, several Lutheran educators from the Florida-Georgia District met at a local motel lounge to debrief, share ideas, and to discuss future meetings of this kind. We also created this blog site and shared our session notes via the entries you find here. Some of the sessions were recorded using an iPod Touch, and those recordings are also available here.

This Year's Gatherings
This year, we're stepping it up a notch and trying to get the word out early. Following the Tuesday keynote and Exhibit Hall Grand Opening (which ends at 7 PM), walk across the street to the Rosen Centre lounge and meet up with several Lutheran educators who are attending FETC along with you. Put some of the District's ed-tech faces together with the names you may know as we spend a little bit of debriefing time together. Like last year, "the first Lutheran beverage is on the District!" Look for me, Paul Schwan. I'll be your host. On Wednesday, we'll meet following the final session (Concurrent Session 5), which ends at 5:25 pm. Again, it's just a walk across the street to the Rosen Centre. We'll plan to meet in the Lobby Loung e. This Google map should help.

I use it for my students, who turn in their work electronically via Dropbox.

Why We're Doing This
That's the point of this project: to share with others in the Florida-Georgia District, including those who are unable to attend FETC, so that the many sessions are available to all of us.

One teacher’s perspective on technology:

It should help my students learn.
It should make things easier for the teacher.

Part 1: Training Do’s and Don’ts

Don’t: limit by requiring oneself to be a technology expert
Do: remind teachers of their expertise

ex: you don’t have to know how to do the video project yourself
the point is that they can can convey their knowledge of the topic
give them plenty of time (ex: give them 6 weeks to make the video, but have them turn in the script for the video by week 2)
They’ll come up with a way to figure it out, even if they’re not the best at technology.
Give them the opportunity to work alone or with a group of peers

We need to remember that we’re not the lamp; we’re the light!

Don’t: start with standards

don’t use jargon

Do: show something fun

Tag Galaxy - connects to the flicker database
puts the pictures on the “globe”

Don’t: sit everyone in a lab for training
Do: allow regular (and short) sharing time

ex: what he did with Tag Galaxy - just a quick preview, etc
shared story of history teacher having kids write letters “home” from WWI
maybe to a 2 minute share time at staff meetings

Don’t: limit technology to labs
Do: show what’s possible with one or two computers in the classroom

Ex: Wiki

Don’t: buy expensive software a teacher has never tried

It has to be personal

Do: learn what’s freely available

let them get comfortable with free things, then they’re more likely to use other stuff
If you can use free things at school, then kids can go home and use it, too.
Using personal things (the pictures of the cats) can help connect you to the kids.

Don’t: blanket the campus with expensive hardware

Teachers- allow yourself to play with the technology a bit.

Do: use targeted spending to focus purchases

You don’t have to get the same technology for every classroom!

I know while we were working after school a few people were talking about how the screen on the netbooks was small while working. Great tip I just learned…. While you are in internet explorer press the F11 key on your keyboard. The address bar hides and lets you see more work area. Then when you want it back just press F11 again. Super Cool.

Also pretty cool… in Excel if you are making a chart – you can put all your data in and highlight it. After you highlight it press F11 and it automatically makes your chart without having to go through the whole chart wizard. You can change the chart type by clicking the chart button on the top after the chart is made. It automatically makes a bar chart but is one key stroke to change to pie or whatever.

NOTE: works in Firefox, too!
