They met beneath the red light down a dim SoMa alley. He hustled for fame and fortune in Web 2.0; she starved as an artist by day and walked the streets at night. Silently they entered Harlot, the new den of inquity from Martel Toler, Nabiel Musleh, Robert Nunez and Jacek Ostoya.Music filled the dark, high-ceiling lounge, a former printing press. She collapsed into a cow-hide covered Louis XIVchair while he fetched libations: Vespers for her (kaffir lim vodka, cranberry, orange juice), Libertine for him (gin, Madeira, Lemon, Sugar).She took in the black damask panels, Gothic oil paintings - and noticed her date was besotted by one of her sisters in sin. She spied her escape; the heavenly VIP Lounge above in the mezzanine.She climbed the stairs and found well-dressed rabble-rousers tempting her with Poco Dolce chocolates and artisan cheeses.Famished, she accepted and struck up an actual conversation in front of the fireplace.

It's true that San Francisco is overflowing with an eclectic mixture of souls dancing to their own beat and lifestyle, all moving through the shadows of their every day life. It's a pattern of human nature and one that has perpetuated itself endlessly from generation to generation. Through this timeless ebb and flow of existence, there is the constant need to escape from the monotony of the daily grind. Escape usually via the form of self-induced pleasure seeking and voyeurism, is how the soul rests and waters itself while in transit between mandatory living.Traditionally humans have found liberation through nightly activities such as: dancing, partying, enjoying music, storytelling, satisfying carnal/physical desires, placating hungers and thirsts via any forms of intoxicating substances. Historically, the French were particularly adept at creating nightly deviations and pleasure-seeking activities to satisfy their passionate natures.

KING LOUIS XIV

As a result, a culture and an opulent lifestyle evolved out of the court of the Sun King himself....Louis XIV. This famous patron of the arts and pre-Hugh Hefner royal deviant figure head, cultivated a court based on mass indulgence and uber opulence. Underneath the shiny gold, white carriages, dainties, painted white faces, lace and decadent decor, a dark and deviant force pulsated. This essence of a lady by day, Harlot by night EXACTLY sums up the feeling that our most recent club to visit exudes. Using the exotic and rather significant namesake Harlot, this uber lounge/nightclub actually possess a deep rooted history in the vicinity that has influenced much of the club's personality and theme. "The lavish...SoMa (South of Market) nightspot Harlot, is proud of it's heritage.

"Back in the late 1800's, this area was filled with brothels, and back alleys were named for the famous madams," says statuesque bar manager Eliana Freeman. Harlot's sexy decor reflects the neighbourhood's lusty past-tastefully-with Victorian-Gothic aesthetic: exposed-brick walls set with subtly suggestive paintings of nudes. And, as if the interior doesn't pay enough homage to the dark past of SoMa's madams (who, legend says, included one called Minna, whose name the alley-way took), bartenders here are outfitted in black corsets adorned with a scarlet"H" Scandalous. " (Cited from:"Ladies of the Night" Hayley Elisabeth Kaufman 7x7 San Francisco Guide Fall 2007) With such potential for Scandal, it's ONLY fitting that the parties and vibe at Harlot be off-the-hook. The ambiance is thick at Harlot and it immediately evoked a brothel, underground feeling when we were standing in line after having parked in a lot located in the same alley! (big plus).

The facility has created a truly interesting smoking space where patrons go into a room that is rather like a terrace with a massive iron gate very reminiscent of "Traitor's Gate" at the Tower of London, in front of it. There are tables and chairs inside of it. The major draw back to the design is that the guests waiting in line have to be subjected to the smoke that pours out of the space and on to the street. Perhaps it lends to the atmosphere of the establishment. Harlot does not possess a swanky facade, but rather an understated front very similar to the club Slide...which also resonates with the Speakeasy/Prohibition essence. In many ways there is an unearthly feel to the place as there is a bizarre mixture of people and spirits lining the street.

In some corners you see homeless laying strewn on the ground sleeping and then rolling in front of the club are Porsche's with beautiful, long-legged twenty-somethings emerging into the forbidden space. To be honest, it was very cold while waiting in line and in hindsight, I now believe that our line was filled with not only eager club dwellers, but also burdened spirits trapped forever in the unknown stories that unfolded in this socially charged part of SoMa. Contrary to the club promotion that dress code is in place, the door folk didn't appear to do much to reinforce the policy. This concerned me about what kind of establishment was going to exist on the inside.

Once we gained access and ONLY because we had been on the guest list for the amazing DJ Guzie of the Rock-it!Scientists...I was immediately concerned at how packed it was. People had started streaming out of the place by 11:45pm, but it was very full by the time we got in. I think club jumpers use this place as a warm up stop before hitting the larger dance clubs. We checked my coat (another bonus point!) and started to absorb the space aesthetics while searching for DJ Fabian, who had booked a table for the night. The old world, gothic feel was quite overwhelmed due to the mass number of bodies that were inside and the windows were even sweating it was so jammed. As we moved the crowd, it was hard not think of the massacre it would be if a fire or stampede broke out. The space was so filled with bodies and furniture, it really took away from the interior decor statement. Funny, it wasn't until the numbers started to diminish that the real club atmosphere started to emerge. When we finally manoevered our way to the far end of the club where the DJ booth was located and elevated, we were completely STRUCK at how much the whole interior design made the DJ booth appear like an altar.

Suspended above the booth and uplit with some VERY effective LED lighting, was the image of a naked woman in a Christ-like stance, covered in foliage of somesort...might be fungi. The whole image is gothic-emo in feel but one immediately assumes SHE is the Harlot. Might it be the famous madam Minna, who was alleged to have worked that alley? It's possible....the painting definitely emanates a darkness into the space.

This in conjunction with the opulent looking cowhide and other leather textured Louis XIV furniture, the black walls, heavy curtained windows, red hanging lamps of the red light districts, the massive deer antler chandeliers, Renaissance paintings of debauchery on the ceilings, all gel together to create the feeling of being in an old french chateau at a late night riske party of the debutantes! There is another wonderful painting of two French maids of the Louis XIV court, depicted with their backs to the viewer displaying their scandal to the world. If ANYTHING this club deserves credit for the rich authenticity that it maintains to it's heritage. It's not a space built to accommodate mass volumes of club-goers and I think the establishment whores itself by overwhelming the space for the sake of the gross income at the end of the night. LP stated, "This is more overcrowded than a California prison!" Yet, maybe that's the point. The namesake is Harlot and the history of the space is based upon human corruption, so why should the owners attempt to honorable now!? If you do choose to enter the Harlot ;-), I would HIGHLY recommend a table in the VIP area just for comfort sake. Even then there is a time limit to each bottle purchased. The longer you want to say, the more alcohol you have to purchase. We also discovered that as patrons become more and more inebriated, the furniture located at the edge of the dance space is rather dangerous in terms of people tripping and falling over it.

On a positive note for this night, we did have the opportunity to catch DJ Guzie live dropping his insane beats to a frenzied crowd. DJ Solarz made a surprise guest appearance, so it was a rare treat for the Buzz to get to see the Rock-it!Scientists together on a gig. This lady of the night, this Harlot... is one TO BE reckoned with and she is no light weight club. She is rather gypsy-like in her allure and it's impossible NOT to be affected by her ambiance. If you are in San Francisco for an extended stay and you are up for some clubbing with the seductive supernatural creatures of the night, then Harlot is your lady of the evening!

Joe Bermudez is now a name that holds much weight and respect within the House music industry, as well as within the radio community and the world of the celebrity elite! Joe has been proactively fast-tracking his career up the famed ladder of success over the past decade, to a truly uncharted destination. In fact, destiny came looking for Joe when he was bound for post secondary school film studies!! Not unlike a lighthouse beckoning through the fog to a wayward ship, a random act of passing a radio station and applying for a job in order to cover the rent...was the humble beginnings of this incredibly talented powerhouse of an artist.

"After high school graduation in 1994, Bermudez had been destined for film school at the University of Southern California. But that summer, before he packed his bags, he happened to drive past WKZS 99.9 in Auburn. "I was like, 'Oh, that would be fun,' and I just kept on driving. I was like, 'You know what, what do I have to lose?' I went back and demanded they hire me so I could pay my rent," Bermudez said. Station management laughed. They weren't looking for a DJ."I told them I just wanted a shot really, really badly. I would train myself. If there was any shred of hope, please, I could really use this. If not, I would understand. They were like, 'You know what, we're going to give you a shot.'"He skipped film school and worked his way up from overnight shifts as a board operator. Jobs in Boston and Portland followed. Eventually, Bermudez landed his first gig spinning in a night club in Atlanta."I guess I just kept harassing the promoter to do something and after a while, he finally gave in. Within his 32 years of living and growing up as a child in Lewiston, Maine, Joe made the first of many big life jumps, when he RADICALLY altered the course of his life impulsively choosing to pursue a career that he had no training for at a local radio station (WKZS 99.9). Well, Joe didn't maintain that beginner status for long and through much diligence and self-instruction, he worked up through the various roles at the station. He did so with so much momentum, that it wasn't long before he sky-rocketed into the club venues based on the hawt reputation he had built for himself in the regional music community. Yet taking all of this into consideration, we have to ask the question....Who has the bravado these days to do such an impulsive and free-flowing act of seeking a job with little to no experience, but promising the genuine commitment of sweat and effort to learn? THIS is a quality that we truly admire in Joe Bermudez and one that in our opinion sets him apart from the norm. He is not afraid to take risks, to try, to learn and to grow from his mistakes (which haven't been many!).

He has proven in JUST a short amount of time that the American Dream is still alive and you can build any dream if you have the commitment level to back the bravado. Hard work and endless hours of personal sacrifice are something Joe is not immune to either. Success was not handed to Joe on a silver platter. Even now with his fame and notoriety, he is always in the trenches with his peers giving every last bit of himself to all of the projects that he undertakes. The track name is "Armageddon" and it was officially commissioned alongside legendary Swedish remixer Stonebridge. Both producers hooked up with the brand new American Idol "Simon Cowell approved" L.A. artist Jessica Jarrell, who his ONLY 15. Armageddon is her debut track and we feel that it is a perfect example of JUST how talented Joe is. The original song is gospel-inspired according to Davis Ballard of In The Know PR. He also describes the gem as having mainstream appeal due to its, " dynamic beat and ear appealing string section which lends itself perfectly to any dance music aficionado's taste!" Joe Bermudez is not like the average human being who might be content to sit and watch life pass him by. No, no, no!! 1) What inspired you to pick your DJ name?

My DJ name is my real name. I have always liked my name and didn’t want something silly like DJ Squirrel Biscuit.

2) What kind of music do you like to spin?

I like music with energy. It doesn’t matter to me if it’s electro, progressive, ect. As long as it rocks the house I will work it into my set.

3) What and who are some of your major influences? (Artists, DJ’s, ect)

Darrin Friedman was the first club DJ that made me go WOW!!! I want to do this!!! Since then, DJ’s like Danny Tenaglia, Armin Van Buuren and Mark Knight have all influenced me.

4) Biggest reward about being a DJ?

Meeting SO many really nice people.

6) What is the best party you have ever spun at?

There are so many good ones that it’s tough to narrow it down. Two that really stand out are New Year’s Day at Arq in Sydney and my birthday party at Living Room in Mexico City.

7) If you could mix at a club or a party anywhere, where would it be and with whom?

I would love to play at Creamfields. They always have such a good line up that it would be an honor to play alongside any of them.

8) In what cities have you spun?

That’s a pretty long list. It might be easier to list the ones I haven’t played in yet. Are you a resident DJ at any clubs right now? I travel so much that it’s hard to, but I do have regular stops in Boston, LA, etc.

Tryst Nightclub in Vegas is pretty pimp. They have a 150 foot waterfall in the middle of the club. It’s not often you see that while you’re dancing.

10) Do you plan out your sets or play off the crowd’s reactions?

I always have certain records that I can’t wait to play, but it all depends on the crowd. Their energy dictates where the night goes.

So, the amazing and non-stop LADY GAGA is back in our club radar AGAIN! DID SHE EVER LEAVE?? Nope. This woman is an enigma AND WE ARE WITNESSING MUSIC AND CULTURAL HISTORY UNFOLD BEFORE OUR VERY EYES...She is like Barbara Streisand was to the 70's, and Madonna was to the 80's. There is nothing that can stop her and she is revolutionizing the industry. THE GAGA generation has been born peeps and with it she reflects the multi-dimensional element that is at work in all aspects of our culture. She is not just music, she is fashion, she is a lifestyle, she is TV, she is performance art (remember Michael Toast?), she is political, she is satire...she is GAGA!!! Well, as we all know she succeeded and her album The Fame has skyrocketed her to superstar status! Her album, "The Fame peaked at number one in Austria, Canada and Ireland and four in Australia. Afterward "Haus of Gaga" turned their focus further upon the American market with Gaga going on her first ever concert tour with fellow Interscope pop group, the reformed New Kids on the Block. Gaga started her stint with New Kids on the Block in Los Angeles on October 8, and continued through the end of November. She has her finger on the pulse of so many elements of culture and is single-handedly influencing them all simultaneously through her musical and fashion creations. She has developed a Haus of Gaga which is not unlike a school of thought if you want to parallel it to the Dadaists or Bohemians. Lady Gaga is not your typical artist but rather a hybrid...she's a performance artist and has been her whole life. "I always loved rock and pop and theater. On this note of cultural commentary, Lady Gaga just released this weekend her most recent video for her new trax off of The Fame album, "Paparazzi" and it's controversial-Madonna-esque!! Phew that was a mouthful!! She's created a very aggressive commentary on the life-sucking media that pursues celebrities and exploits them at any turn, and at any cost. Gaga makes us uncomfortable in her portrayal of paralysis and disability. It's hard to know if she is celebrating it or belittling it. Again, something Madonna would do...aka Papa Don't Preach, Like A Virgin. She's created an "epic"video, as Perez Hilton noted...an epic for the new millenium to chew on and think about. What comes to mind for me when I watch this video is Princess Diana and how she was destroyed by the media. Yet, I think Gaga is saying it's a double-edged sword, in that as much as stars are consummed by the media, they require the media to perpetuate their own celebrity statushood! It's that age old symbiotic relationship between host and parasite scenario.

David Foley's Reflections About Ruby Skye's 9 Glorious Years As One of The World's Few Authentic House Clubs!

We have been so honored at The Buzz, but the recent gesture by SF's Ruby Skye resident DJ, David Foley. In recognition of Ruby Skye's 9 glorious and successful years in operation, David has compiled this masterful collection of House Anthem traxs into his "I Remember" album. It truly gives us a stratum of vibes reflecting some the best globally produced House beats that have resonated throughout the dance spaces of this Club World Award winning nightclub. When asked, HOW could you possibly select the best and most worthy traxs from a decade of time, to represent and to pay homage to one of the few GREAT authentic House clubs in existance?....Foley responded with: "LOL, I struggled over most of them. My first pass came up with 100 songs. From that I laid out a fix list. After listening through the list, I changed just about every song, lol. Then I played through the set again, and swapped out 2 more. There were many iterations but when it was right and I listened back, it was perfect too me." (DJ David R Foley, 05-22-09) We asked David to share his perspectives with us as a resident DJ, about the past 9 years of operation for SF' s Ruby Skye Nightclub.

In 1999 I was a resident at The BackBeat in Santa Clara when the manager Reggie told me that they were opening a new club in the city. Everyone that had worked with Reggie and George knew it would be awesome. We had no idea how amazing it would be. The scale and grandeur of the club was more than anyone expected. It had the signature Karpaty touch, featuring food early, and then music through the night. When the club first opened, it was incredible to see the response. Lines around the block every weekend, with hundreds of people never making it in. Even people on the guest list were told to get there by 11 or you might not make it in as the club hit capacity every night.

The DJ booth started out as an enclosed room in the upstairs level (what is now sound & light room). It was the same room with all of the AMPs that power the club, which turned out to be tough. It would get so hot in there, that it was a like a sauna by the end of the night. The booth then moved to the upstairs balcony overlooking the main floor. It finally moved downstairs onto the stage where it is now, and while it takes up room on the stage, it’s the ideal place for it.

Ruby has always been known for its amazing showmanship. The best gogo dancers have always performed there, but in addition to that, they have always featured some amazing acrobatic acts. Along with the amazing light system that can lower down to the crowd, the performing acts add a flavor that is not repeated anywhere in San Francisco, or in most clubs other than Ibiza’s Manumission.

The Jungle Room started out as a cigar room, much like The BackBeat. For the first year, the music from the main room was pumped into the Jungle Room. When they decided to add a different flavor of music, I was asked to move my residency from the Jungle Room at The BackBeat to the Jungle Room at Ruby Skye. Over the past nine years with the increased popularity of Hip Hop the format evolved from Deep House to the Hip Hop, Mashup, Electro Hip House blends that we play there today.

In addition to the amazing club patron experience of Ruby Skye, it is equally as enjoyable from a DJ’s perspective. George, Reggie, Jessica, Trevor, Frank, Ross and the entire staff are world class. Working for Inner Circle Entertainment is the best job any DJ could have. Every aspect of working for them is great. They have always treated everyone incredibly well, from birthday parties to holiday celebrations, they are second to none to work for.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been nine years since the jewel known as Ruby Skye opened. I’m so happy for them to receive so many honors and recognition including being voted in the Top 25 clubs by DJ magazine for 2009 and Best Club this year at the Winter Music Conference. Most clubs don’t make it 9 years let alone get those kind of industry accolades in their ninth year. I’m proud to have been associated with such a great club and share in their celebration. I look forward to another 9 years of amazing entertainment as well as the new venues that George and crew will be opening in the coming years. David Foley

Have you ever wondered what would happen if Disney's haunted house or Hogwart's Castle, turned into a nightclub!!!??? Well, that would be a great place to start with my impression of Ruby Skye. This is the sister club of Aura Nightclub, located in Pleasanton. Ruby is located in the theatre district of downtown San Francisco. "Ruby Skye was built in the 1890's ? it's an historical landmark that formerly housed "The Stage Door Theater."

Conveniently located just off Union Square, it is a fun destination for Corporate and Private Parties. The Nightclub offers in-house Catering, Customized Drink Menus, Hosted Bar, Decorations, and Audio-Visual services."
The environment and the interior layout make for the perfect club setting. With it's massive stage and various balconies overlooking the dancefloor...it has been an ideal setting for such big names as Paul Oakenfold and Tiesto, to name a few!! The multiple bar spaces are massive and well spread out....no barstools to impede the flow to and from the bar. The main VIP area is tucked in an advantageous location underneath the largest balcony, facing the stage. This club is a bit pricey from it's VIP packages to the actual drink prices - alcholoic and non-alcoholic...even bottled water is expensive....but it's chic!! However, this place is ALL ABOUT DRAMA!
From the eerie, haunted ghostly portraits hanging around the perimeter of the room, overseeing the fun and debauchery below, to the amazing acrobatic trapeze artists dancing on a non-existent dance floor overhead to an unearthly lightshow....

It's a place to be see and be seen AT! The owners have spared no expense with a state-of-the-art sound system...guaranteed to make your chest pound and with subwoofers that will consume your whole being!! It's awesome. Yet...be warned....crowds of club-goers in San Francisco seem drawn to Ruby like a moth to a flame. If you time it right and get to the club early enough, you can actually savour and enjoy the ambiance of the space. On nights when big act names are scheduled, be prepared for a RAVE-like, body-2-body experience. It depends on what you want...The resident DJ's over a wide range of styles from Trance to Hip/Hop to Jungle/Big Beat etc. They cover it all. Ruby Skye is like a theme park for those who come out to play at night. If you search hard enough, you will even discover little rooms upstairs separate from the main dance space, that offer more of a pool hall, suedo sports lounge with people drinking port and puffing cigar!!! It's a space that gets used in multiple ways.

For those of you who prefer to be a spectator...this IS THE CLUB FOR YOU. Voyeurs will thrive as the balcony beckons people to lose themselves in the dance drama below and also to watch the professional Go-Go dancers dancing on a back-lit catwalk grid at the back of the stage. It's a place to indulge your senses.

EVEN for our male readers....it's good to get the 411 on WHAT the ladies should be sporting out in the clubs this summer! These trends that I have flagged are certainly not exhausted by a long shot. However, even if you add a few of these fashion statements to your wardrobe for the sizzlin' summer months...you should be in great shape to be on the edge of your fashion game, while out on the town!! Several of the accessories and outfits posted I have even added to my own wardrobe or have already been seen on The Buzz at various gigs. In the meantime, here's a great TOP 20 SUMMER 2009 GENERAL FASHION TRENDS SUMMARY from the fashion sources directly!

1. DRESSES - Must-haves - Easy A-line 60's shifts, dynamic Grecian drapery, asymmetric off the one shoulder styles. New tier volume tulip skirt shapes over straight longer skirts. Strapless full ethereal fairy prom skirts/dresses. Maxi dresses. Kimono sleeve dresses that morph into tunics when worn over trousers.

In A Digital Age, Vinyl Albums Are Making A Comeback

"Neil Schield knows the grim state of the music business as well as anyone; last May, he was laid off from a company at the vanguard of digital music distribution. But this month, Schield began an unlikely second act: He opened a brick-and-mortar record store in Echo Park, with racks of tasteful inventory carrying price tags as high as $100 -- all presumed liabilities in an age when "digital" and "free" seem to rule the day. For added chutzpah, Schield's shop, Origami Vinyl, exclusively stocks new vinyl LPs, presumed not long ago to be as dead as eight-track tapes.

Moreover, Origami is just one of at least three such shops opening in L.A. this spring; the others are Vacation in Los Feliz and Little Radio, a downtown storefront operated by an Internet radio station and concert promoter. The small boom is the result of a commercial rediscovery and appreciation of vinyl records among collectors and more casual audiences.

"Sometimes I wonder, 'What am I doing?' " Schield said. But "it's the only corner of the physical music business that's growing."

If Schield needed any assurance that he was on the right track, it came even before Origami opened. As his staff was preparing the store one day, Pete Townshend, the legendary guitarist of the Who, paid a visit. Townshend had read a blog item about the shop and dropped by to see if it was open.

The return of the scruffy neighborhood record shop is as unexpected as the revival of vinyl. After CDs first hit the U.S. market in 1983, LPs were deemed largely obsolete. Later, consumers' shift to file-trading and online retail outlets such as iTunes and Amazon.com gutted the storefront music business.

Between 2003 and last year, more than 3,000 record stores closed in the U.S., including such Los Angeles landmarks as Tower Records on the Sunset Strip. Independent shops such as Rhino Westwood and Aron's Records in Hollywood accounted for nearly half the losses, according to the Almighty Institute of Music Retail, a database and marketing firm. Today, there are 185 record stores in the L.A. area, down from 259 at the beginning of 2007.

But as mass marketing of LPs faded, some listeners began rediscovering vinyl. It's not just older fans who grew up with the decades-old format who attest to its tangible pleasures -- the arresting artwork, the labor of love that goes into flipping LP sides and the fact that many audiophiles say vinyl sounds better. Younger listeners raised on torrent files can see LPs as a kind of talisman too.

"I've always marveled at every new generation of 15-year-old boys who go to the Doors vinyl section and say, 'Wow, an original Doors LP!' " said Marc Weinstein, founder of Amoeba Music, the three-store chain whose Hollywood branch is among the largest independent retail record stores in the U.S. "Major labels should have capitalized on this years ago."

Slowly they are, by pressing a growing list of vinyl catalog reissues and new albums by marquee artists such as U2. Nielsen SoundScan reported 1.88 million sales of new LPs last year, an 89% increase over 2007. And that figure is almost certainly conservative, as many independent retailers do not report their sales to SoundScan; the service says that more than two-thirds of vinyl albums are sold at indie operations.

Of course, to play a record, you need a turntable -- and the market has responded with low-cost models that are more versatile than their earlier counterparts. Crosley Radio, for example, specializes in retro-styled record players sold in stores such as Target, Macy's and Urban Outfitters. Its basic model retails for less than $80; for a little more, there's a version with a USB port that allows music to be uploaded to a computer. (In addition, many LPs come with free digital download cards.)

"By the end of 2008, over 50% of our business was in new vinyl, which amounts to millions of dollars a year," said Matt Wishnow, founder of the New York-based online music retailer Insound.com. Its turntable sales increased 200% in 2008, with the company shipping dozens daily during the holiday season.

But online retailers are not the only ones profiting from the market for new LPs. Now, it may have reached a point where it can sustain the kind of small independent store once done in by downloading.

Trying again

Origami Vinyl is far from the first attempt at a record store in Echo Park. In 2007, Sea Level Records shuttered soon after a car drove through its Sunset Boulevard storefront -- a metaphor not lost on many in the neighborhood.

But Schield is hoping to fare better, with a new stock of blog-hyped indie rock and the classic hip-hop, folk and world music, set amid a minimalist-vintage décor featuring tungsten-filament lightbulbs and a spiral staircase.

Origami, which opened April 3, also does more than just sell records, serving as the daytime box office for the nearby Echo, Echoplex and Spaceland clubs.

Likewise, Little Radio founder Dave Conway is counting on income from booking concerts at the adjacent Regent Theatre to help pay the rent at his shop, where the windows are decorated with rotating LPs as varied as vintage soul and new local acts like the alt-country band Everest.

"I don't think this is all that crazy," Conway said of his latest venture, opening in May. "Just putting these records up in the windows, you can see how excited people are. With all the cafes and bars here, a record store fits right in."

Over in Los Feliz, Vacation falls squarely in the area's tradition of impressively bearded young men hawking exotic imported albums. "We're banking on people liking vinyl for the long haul," said co-owner Mark Thompson, who also co-founded and runs the experimental-metal label Hydra Head Records. "With CDs, you have an obligation to keep a low price tier. But with vinyl, if you do awesome work, you don't have to worry so much about the cost."

A high price

Though that is true for some collectors, others might think a $25 180-gram double-gatefold LP is more an indulgence than a necessity, especially in today's economy. And the high price of manufacturing, shipping and stocking vinyl won't be dropping soon.

Most of the equipment used to manufacture LPs is antiquated, and that limits potential cost-saving competition, said Don MacInnis, owner of Record Technology Inc., a Camarillo-based vinyl pressing plant that handles independent labels such as Sub Pop as well as major projects like U2's new album "No Line on the Horizon."

"I don't see the market ever getting large enough to start making presses again. Our newest machine was purchased in 1984," MacInnis said. "A big part of this resurgence will be temporary. Many people will soon realize the big pain factor of being a vinyl aficionado. You can make money at it if you price your records high enough, but it's not going to be big dollars."

Even some local devotees are skeptical about the new stores' prospects, given their lack of offbeat used vinyl (though Vacation carries a small selection). "It's all well and good to go out and buy the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs or Iron & Wine, but you need to have something different and exclusive going on to keep people coming back for that unknown quantity," said Scott Tarasco, an L.A. collector who spends hundreds of dollars a month on LPs. "Quality used vinyl flies out the door. There's got to be something in there that's going to throw me for a loop."
At Amoeba -- whose size and clout give it chain-store competitive advantages alongside its indie credibility with music fans -- new and used vinyl makes up no more than 20% of sales, according to founder Weinstein.
And even with the recent uptick in vinyl sales, the general outlook for music retail still looks grim. In the last year, total U.S. album sales were down 14% from 2007, a figure that includes a 32% gain in digital album sales,according to SoundScan figures.

But such dire statistics don't dampen the enthusiasm of the new retailers, who have faith that the crackle of a vinyl record is one of the few things music fans can rely on.

Hey peeps!! I decided to switch things up a lil' bit this month. In fact, Bu and I did a complete reversal for a change. Since she opted out of posting an April Hits list, she went on to do May and did it right at the start of the month!! LOL Totally cool, but then I thought I would defer my list a lil' bit to give her post some primmmmme time!!

ORLANDO RADIO CELEBRITY DJ ERIKA ROMAN

Recently, I was approached by a good friend and industry colleague DJ Jo Flash, to post a tribute to an industry friend of his who had recently passed away in a tragic accident. At first I felt uncertain because I had not had the pleasure of meeting this well-loved DJ, who originally hailed from NY. Yet, something about the way Jo described her, in combination with what I read about Erika Roman, prompted me to want to share her life story with you all. Since the majority of our readers and followers are DJ's, paying tribute to a female communications artist who has been diligently working her whole life at promoting the underdog in the music scene, seemed like a worthy article to post and share. As I read about Erika, I increasingly got the feeling that this individual radiated love and energy in all that she tackled. Yet, she did it with her own unique style and flare. However, in the midst of the limelight and celebrity status that came along with the blossoming success in the media world, this creative soul did not forget her humble beginnings. As a result, she proactively reached out to those in need of a voice and she became their medium. Erika stated at one time, "I was homeless when I was a little girl, and no one heard me when I was hungry or when I was reaching out. Now millions of people hear me everyday." She took the power given to her voice via radio and always put it to good use. Despite the fact that this rising DJ star's light was extinguished early, she still managed to be a part of one of the countries leading and highly respected Hip-Hop Radio Stations, Orlando's Power 95.3 FM (http://power953.com/ ). She networked with leading mainstream artists, as recently as interviewing the now world famous Lady Gaga (see video posted below). Erika proved to the global music scene that in her 31 years of living, talent rises above all color, ethnicity, creed and/or status. The drive to succeed was inherent in Erika and her influence will continue to be felt long after her passing. There are future generations of Chula's to evolve as a result of the millions of listeners who tuned in weekly JUST to catch Erika's vibrant voice on the airwaves. She not only encouraged peeps to be original, but also to not to be afraid to rise above the norm, just like she had. ST. LUCIE COUNTY — A popular Orlando radio DJ was killed Friday when she tried to avoid debris on Florida's Turnpike and her car ended upside down underwater about 20 miles south of Osceola County. Erika Roman, 31, the morning host on Power 95.3 FM, was killed in the 1:30 p.m. single-car crash.......

Born and raised in New York City, this young vivacious Latina has been earning her strips in the music biz for a decade. In her late teens, under the tutelage of New York entertainment impresario Sal Abbatiello, of Fever Records, Erika was being groomed for success. Simultaneously, she began promoting nightclubs while she attended Marymount Manhattan College, in New York. Here she attained a BA in Communications and Media.
Always the opportunist, she took a stab as a co-host on Stonybrook University's popular college radio station, WUSB 90.1FM. Erika's unforgettable voice and radiant personality made her an instant hit on the show. Making her the station's first female, hip hop on-air personality. While working at Fever Records, one of the first successful independent records companies, Erika would experience firsthand the many dynamics that make up and drive the world of entertainment.

Erika would have the opportunity to travel with many artists throughout the U.S. working in a managerial and promotional capacity. It's a funny story how I came to discover this website. In fact, the site has been around since 1999 and I'm surprised that I didn't know about it already. However, I attend a weekly Pilates class at the In-Shape Gym that I belong too. I really have enjoyed this class, not only because the instructor is cheerful and an exceptional teacher, but she has created a unique class based upon her own enthusiasm and passion for music. Each week Cami creates a thematic playlist based upon a seasonal holiday, a word, a topic, a feeling etc. She is a MASSIVE trivia buff and as a result she quite often shares her extensive knowledge about the songs that she has chosen for that week, throughout the session. It's quite clever actually as this strategy helps to keep the class participants' mindS off of the discomfort that some of the exercises can cause AND it brings humor and insight into the workout time. For me it's become Music 101!!! Over the course of the time that I have known her, she has referenced Songfacts.com multiple times as being a wonderful source to get random facts and little known information about songs that perhaps the average human being might not know!!! I have truly come to admire how much information she does possess about a vast number of songs and so I thought that this would be an ideal website to share with our readers. After doing some research about Songfacts.com, I discovered that the site was actually created BY A DJ!!! How ironic!!! I am sure that MANY of you are aware of the website, but for those of us out there looking to flesh out our knowledge base about music from all genres and generations, Songfacts.com is a great site to add to our list of Favs! They also have a newsletter, a MySpace page, a Facebook page AND a Twitter page!! The links are posted below! So, if you are just learning about this wonderful resource....be sure to sign up and register at all of their portals and mentally thank my wonderful Pilates instructor, who like the DJ's continuously pays great respect to all musical artists through playing their work and celebrating their musical creativity AND HISTORY!!!

"There 's a story behind every song. Did you know that Sweet Home Alabama was the first Lynyrd Skynyrd song to use female backup singers? Perhaps you did. But did you know the band members never even met these women? Their parts were recorded separately. This is just one of many, many facts for one of many, many songs on the Songfacts database. Carl 'founder' Wiser was working for a Rock station in Hartford, Connecticut and did a show called "Breakfast with the Beatles." He looked up books, magazine articles and press releases to gather some information about the songs and this information was stored on a computer. Over time more and more songs were added . This was also about the time the Internet was making its presence felt. Some HTML lessons later, a "web site" was established for the radio station... a website that went online in 1999 under the name of Songfacts. It started off as just an elite little site visited mostly by DJs and anyone who happened to stumble upon it. In 2002 Songfacts was featured as a Yahoo Pick! and that was enough to crash the server. Over one weekend the number of registered users nearly doubled from 800 to 1400. What followed were writeups in several newspapers, magazines and the buzz over the internet. Songfacts' claim to fame is the fact that anyone is allowed to contribute to its fact database. What's more, these facts are then cross checked by a panel of experts and researchers before they are put up on the site. The Songfacts Forum is buzzing with music enthusiasts with the incredible ability to identify and provide information about songs given minimal detail. A monthly newsletter chronicles the ever expanding list of new songs added. Apart from facts about songs, a subsidiary of the site is Artistfacts which helps people learn about and contribute information for their favourite bands and artists. The staff at Songfacts has also interviewed a number of songwriters who shared the stories behind their songs. These interviews are up on the site as well. Songfacts Was Founded By Carl Wiser, A Radio DJ!

"Songfacts is a website devoted to song information compiled by music enthusiasts, radio professionals and songwriters, who are often interviewed to determine the stories behind their songs.
Songfacts was founded by Carl Wiser, a radio disc jockey in Hartford, Connecticut. He compiled a database of song information to help prepare his radio show, then put the database online as Songfacts in August, 1999. At first, it was mostly disc jockeys using and contributing to the site, but in 2002 Songfacts was chosen as a Yahoo! Pick and subsequent press coverage expanded the reach considerably.
The "Songfacts" can be anything of interest regarding the song, including lyric interpretations, notable cover versions, production notes or information about the songwriter. For example, the Songfacts for "Escape (The Piña Colada Song)" explain that Rupert Holmes wrote the original lyric as "Do you like Humphrey Bogart?" before changing it to "Do you like Piña Coladas?" The Songfacts also mention how the drum track is a loop repeated about 60 times, and that Rupert Holmes wanted a different song released as a single. Registered users may add lyrics, leave comments about songs and send in song information for review. The songs can be searched by title, artist and release date, and are also put into categories. Songfacts has a community-based forum, where many DJ's and students have had music-related questions answered by the members and where various music topics are discussed.
In the August 2004 issue of Men's Journal, Songfacts is listed as one of the 100 Best Websites For Guys. "Songfacts.com: Trivia, rumors, legends, and correct lyrics of rock songs. A must if you like to bore people in bars." USA Weekend has praised it as "a virtual Behind the Music."

It is critical to us at the Buzz to focus on DJ's at all levels of expertise, skill, years of experience, genre preference and global exposure. For many, the strong pull to music becomes so overwhelming that it becomes a vehicle with which these individuals use to express their inner emotions and to connect socially with others. 1. What inspired you to pick your DJ your name?

A great story….. but long story short, I was prepping for a set at a local venue in Chicago. I was downstairs in my friends basement practicing a mix and I couldn't get on tempo. I was getting mad at the turntable because the needle was skipping. I gave up after failed attempts and later on at the gig made a snarled facial expression when I was mixing that record. My friend came up to me and said “that mix was mad!”. Needless to say I nailed it and had a great set! That’s where the name Mad Mix Mike came into play.

2. What kind of music do you like to spin?

I like to spin everything, I have a love for all genres of House music. Right now I am spinning mainly Electro and Progressive House in Phoenix (my favorite).

3. What and who are some of your major influences (artists, DJs, etc.)?

Definitely growing up in Chicago my major influences were the “Hot Mix 5” Bad Boy Bill and Mickey “Mixin'” Oliver. Also, my uncle who taught me almost everything I know . I can’t forget about the fans either who have supported me throughout the years and showed up to all my events. ;)

The bar would be ginormous! DJ booth would be rotating in the middle of the floor, so everyone could see what I was doing, and plenty of Go-Go dancers.

Solidarity through music comes to mind when I sit back and reflect upon my first WMC experience. There are so few moments in our global culture where the world actually unites peacefully for a common purpose. The Olympics, The World Economic Forum in Davos, the World Cup of Soccer, The Global Peace & Unity Conference, Earth Day...are just a few worldwide sanctioned events where the continents unite for the common purpose of humanity and it's interests. As a species, we become so segregated from one another through the barriers of religion, politics, currency, language, borders, and armies that we forget our simple human commonalities such as the need for love, food, health care, education and creative expression such as music. The Winter Music Conference or WMC, is in my opinion, a global event that actually is more influential than we give it credit. Let's have a look at the history of this international event to better understand it's industry and global function:

The Winter Music Conference is a week long electronic dance music event, held every March since the mid-1980s in South Florida. It is aimed at professionals such as artists, DJs, record label representatives (A&R), producers, promoters, radio and the media. Founded in 1985 by then DJs and Record Pool Directors Louis Possenti and Bill Kelly. The first Winter Music Conference took place at the Fort Lauderdale Marriott in February 1986 with approximately 80 dance music industry insiders in attendance. The event festivities are presented across Miami Beach, and Downtown Miami. The major event is the International Dance Music Awards. The event has major international draw, with around 38% of attendees coming from outside the United States. The conference serves as a platform for several underground and indie artists from over 70 different countries which gather at events and panels; it is also a medium used by several entrepreneurs and consumer electronic companies to present their businesses and technological developments.The WMC & The Recording Academy began in 1996 a partnership presenting The Producers Forum, a gathering of legendary artists. Waxpoetics Magazine, JBL, and Stanton sponsored the first International Record Collectors Show in 2007. In 2009 the WMC introduced the first annual WMC VJ Challenge at The Miami Beach Resort & Spa with celebrity hosts, judges, and VJs from various parts of the world hosted by VJ Psyberpxie and Felix Sama. The Miami Beach Resort also received the performance of the RoboMusic Demo in which Funkstar De Luxe and RoboProfessor (Henrik Hautop Lund) create live interactive compositions of RoboMusic.

The WMC is recognized for serving around 60,000 visitors during one week. 3,726 industry delegates attended in 2008, 65% of the present are males and 35% are females. Most of the delegates hail from the United States summing up to 62%, 23% came from Europe, the Latin American community formed 4% of the delegates, Canada with 6% and 1% of Asia and other territories. At the events and panels, 15% of the professionals in 2008 were record label representatives, publishers, and A&R.

The press and media formed 13% close to the 12% of music production specialists, 10% were DJs, 8% being artists as well. Event and concert promoters, managers, agents, and consultants added up to 13% of the present. Radio, venue, club, an bar representatives each listed 5% of the visitors. More than 1.3 million people from 183 countries (out of 192 in the world) viewed the WMC website in 2008. 62,000 participants from 70 countries were present at Miami Beach to get involved in the WMC week.

Prior to this 24th annual event, I had only heard about this yearly happening in the music industry, partly because the event often gets over-shadowed by the bad press of Spring Break incidents. It was actually very difficult for me to get a handle on WHAT the WMC is as I started promoting it on the Buzz...I even discussed this question with a conference rep, who basically said sign up, register and then you can get into all of the official "badge" events. This of course meant absolutely nothing to me. Not being satisfied with this answer, I decided to persevere and I started to ask my peers about what events I should attend, did I need to buy tickets etc. The bottom line I arrived at with each answer I received from artists in various genres and parts of the music industry, was that it's ALL ABOUT THE PRIVATE PARTIES AND FUNCTIONS.

Siz Droppin' Hawt Beats at The Moodswing 360 Mokai Event...HAWT!

DJ Issac from Canada had this to offer Fetty Be in terms of WMC advice: "...Well it all depends on what kind of sound you are into, club vibe, etc. It really is a musical/club "orgy"! Hehe....But in all seriousness, there are all sorts of events. My favourites have been MN2S (Milk N 2 Sugars) night at Opium Garden. Last year was Fedde Le Grand, Martin Solveig and that night was seriously one of my best times in all my years of being involved in the scene. Namely Fedde played an amazing set, I love the club and the vibe was so upbeat.There's lots of small record parties that are fun and nice to attend to break up the "bigger" event nights. Those parties are usually free too, or damn close to it. Last year was quieter than the other years I've been and I'm sure this year will be too... but it still is a blast. Oh... and the Beatport Pool Party during the day time (everyday) is a MUST. Great time. Register ahead of time when you can... the line is stoopid. The Surfcomber has great parties too and is right next to the Delano (where Beatport pool party was last year).Anyway, those are my must do recommendations from last year at least. Being from Canada I favour the outdoor parties or semi outdoor venues... ahhhhh the warm tropical weather of Miami!!! :)Isaac " (DJ Issac, January 17, 2009) Obviously, your objective for attending the WMC is going to influence the choice of events and parties that you choose to attend. Being in the music industry and having the desire to meet as many DJ's as possible, this became our focus. DJ Solarz of The Rock-it! Scientists (Crooklyn Clan featured artist) had this perspective to share with us about the conference: "The other thing that's kinda funny about WMC is that I don't know a single DJ or producer that goes to attend the seminars or classes. It's just a huge party which people use as a networking opportunity." With this key bit of advice and a generous invitation from the CEO and founder of The Crooklyn Clan and CrooklynClan.net, DJ Sizzahandz, our objective soon became clear. Sizzahandz stated, "You will be with us the entire time and you can cover the clan.net event as well if you want to shoot video and take pics or write it up. There are MASSIVE media people involved in this and we have huge publicists covering it." (DJ Sizzahandz, February 5, 2009).

For this initial WMC experience, it only made sense to sample and taste test from the WMC table of plenty, along side industry peers familiar with the ins and outs of how to maximize upon the whole conference vibe. DJ Sizzahandz possesses a discography and history that bestows the adjective pioneer after his name ( http://www.moodswing360.com/artist.php?cat=&id=&artist=19). Siz has been dropping beats for almost as long as the WMC has been in existance. With this being one year prior to the silver anniversary of the WMC...25 years...advice from such an industry voice is sage. We decided not to register for the WMC this year, but rather to ease our way into the scene. We arrived at the event approximately at the half way point in the week so that we could attend the Crooklyn Clan-Moodswing events. According to what our Twitter chatter informed us though, several of our DJ connections had enrolled in the spin offs or were attending such events early in the week. DJ Danny Diggz ( www.myspace.com/dannydiggz ) of the Crooklyn Clan Vault was one artist that we know, who participated. Perhaps next year this would be activity that we would like to witness and report about to our readers. Again, the whole WMC experience is truly one that the participant customizes to suite their specific agenda and objective for attending the WMC.

WMC..Spring Break Style

In fact, we are already considering what we want to accomplish at next year's conference and hope to register so that we can immerse ourselves in the Ultra Music Festival portion of the event, something we didn't do this year. However, this year was about networking and finally meeting up with the many artists that we have showcased on The Buzz or have worked closely with from The Crooklyn Clan.net organization. As Siz suggested, it made sense for us to focus on covering The Clan and of course the various events that they would be attending. The Crooklyn Clan is a Moodswing 360 (http://moodswing360.com/ ) artist and so they were committed to attend the offical events sanctioned by Moodswing. These were 2 exclusive Gansevoort rooftop poolside events and 2 evening events at the super swanky Liv, Fontainebleau Club and Mokai nightclub in Miami Beach, showcasing the various world reknowned artists of Moodswing (see list below).

The preparation that Fetty Be went through to pack for the WMC was documented via Fetty Cam (http://www.blip.tv.com/) ...with outfits carefully considered, PR media such at MyTagz 's custom Buzz tagz (http://www.mytagz.com/ ) and biz cards packed, birthday gift for Riz, tees for the DJ's, Ghiradelli choc bars from San Fran all included....AND of course hardware...cameras, Ipods, headphones and laptops were a MUST!! Yet, with all of this preparation taken care of, I still had no idea what to expect! Our flight was due to arrive into Miami at 10:30pm and we were travelling via a connection in Denver, Colorado. Fortunately, our plane connections worked out and with Crooklyn Clan (http://www.crooklynclan.net/) featured artist DeToto's new Electro Head Boom (BEP vs Knuckles) trax thumping in my buds...we landed into the global music hub ready to roll! DeToto even texted me prior to flying, saying his trax was so hawt that surely it would create some turbulance on the plane...man was he on the money!! We rocked and rolled all the way to Miami!! Thanks DeToto!!! After a quick refresh and some texting-in with peers, we pulled up to the VERY exclusive Fontainebleau Hotel, to attend the SOLD OUT Liv, Fontainebleau LMAFO CD Release party and DJ Riz's Birthday Bash! We were STUNNED at the line-up. It was insane (as Siz stated) and spilled out into the hotel and down the entry way.

There were hundreds of people trying to get into the club. The crowd was a collection of upscale stylish Miami socialites, Business500, music industry peers , irritated security guards and annoyed hotel guests wearing bath robes!! Since we arrived so late, the doors had been officially "closed", with the exception of a few guests who were allowed entry because they knew somebody on the inside. While waiting in line, we saw Serafin of the Crooklyn Clan Vault and DJ LP of the Bay Area. It was quite a thrill to finally have the face-to-face with artists that I have worked so closely with online over the past two years. As time passed and nobody was being granted entry, we thought that the night was coming to a close quickly for us. We even missed the opportunity to get a drink, as they stopped serving guests in the upper lobby.

Yet...all was not lost! Siz sent us a text inquiring into our where-abouts. We explained the situation and he said HOLD ON! That saying actually became the mantra in hindsight now for the WMC. In order to get into MANY of these exclusive events, it was truly about WHO you knew on the inside. With a glimmer of hope, we soon followed Siz's instructions to meet him at the stairs. Once we connected, we also met up with another DJ friend of Siz's Sir William and a photographer, was who was scheduled to document Moodswing- Crooklyn Clan activity. Siz hollered, "Fetty Be is my Publicist...I want her in!" THAT MADE MY NIGHT, let me tell you that!! We certainly appreciated Siz leaving the decks to come and retrieve us. It meant alot...ONCE on the inside, the vibe was INCREDIBLE and the club interior was breathtaking!

We met so many industry friends, took over 200 pictures, had my cell phone stolen due to my being starry-eyed!, got access to the DJ booth to see Siz and Riz up close, gave Riz his Bday gift, shot some KA CROOKLYN CLAN video footage and eased our travel pains with one too many Jägermeister shots!! Unfortunately, we had arrived too late to catch Moodswing's artist LMFAO perform live, but we saw them on our last night at Mokai and even bumped into them randomly at Dolce Nightclub!! As the party began to shifting into down gear, we left with Crooklyn Clan Vault artists DJ Fabian and David Savior to try and get into the infamous Miami Mansion Nightclub, as House lord Roger Sanchez was spinning.

Dennis Nazereno, DJ Who, Carmine, Don Dada, Frankie M, Fresh One, Chris Cutz...Sleeping Giants Artists out of San Diego!

As we entered into Mansion, we were shocked to see JJ. Flores and DJ Scotty Boy strolling non-chalantly out of the club! These random DJ encounters were NOT uncommon throughout our WMC experience. Other examples of this include seeing DJ Spider, DJ Tina T, DJ Vice and Graham Funke all together out at Liv! Or when we went out for dinner Thursday night with DJ Fabian, David Savior and DJ Tina T to Puerto Sagua...a Miami Beach haven for Cuban cuisine, and encountered reknowned producer Miguel Migs, the infamous DJ Vice and his posse of L.A. DJ's and a whole San Diego faction of DJ's from Sleeping Giants...ALL UNDER ONE ROOF eating! We then went on to meet another amazing Crooklyn Clan featured artist, the beautiful DJ Girl6 and did some club hopping with her which resulted in an LMFAO siting at Dolce!! It was just a common phenomena typical of the magnitude of this gathering. Swept up in the hype of the WMC, our first night (or morning I should say) wrapped up for us ordering food at a local pizza joint just down from Mansion and included yet MORE networking. Solarz was completely accurate in his perspective that...no matter where you go in Miami Beach during the WMC, you are bound to be exchanging business cards or CDs!!! It's just part of the unspoken conference protocol and what FUELS the club portion of the music industry. Initially, I noted that that the global influence of the WMC is under-estimated. The volume of politicking that I witnessed throughout the 4 days that I was immersed in the party scene was immense. As a result, the new alliances created in the WMC setting filter into the club world via new music, new artist/management partnerships, fashion trends and THAT then effects the masses...the unique consummer who is influenced by the music that they choose to download onto thier Ipod and into their lives. The ripple effect of the WMC is substantial and far reaching in my opinion. On the surface, the party vibe masks the real, unsaid industry play that is occuring beneath the surface.

Not only is the politicking intense, but the WMC schedule is NOT for the faint at heart. The party vibe can be 24 hrs a day if you choose it to be. You literally set your own pace and build in down time in order to restore energy reserves. There are definitely alternative methods to refuelling aside from sleeping and believe you me, we saw it all! With bedtimes averaging between 4-6am, we needed to grab at least 5-6 hours of sleep and then we rallied to attend the poolside events that went down during the daylight hours. Thursday and Friday we made appearances at both Moodswing 360 Gansevoort rooftop poolside events.

We had the privilege of meeting some A-listers including: Playmate Miss April 05 Courtney Culkin (Siz's GF), entertainment royalty DJ Samantha Ronson, Madonna's Hard Candy Tour DJ Enferno and Ent. Management Guru's Moodswing 360's Ricky Greenstein and Johnny Maroney! DJ Sizzahandz introduced us to many of his peers and friends. He allowed us to join his VIP area which was being sponsored by a new trendy cocktail beverage called Rhythm (http://www.drinkrhythm.com/), founded by John Freiberger. It's a new cocktail beverage that is claiming to contain the hangover cure while also possessing the power of a Red Bull!! It is premiere 70 Proof Citrus Liquer with Ginseng, Damiana Taurine, Guarana, B6, B12 & Caffeine!!! It's a gorgeous mango color and mixes perfectly with ANYTHING.

With drinks in hand and the trendiest of vibes being dropped such as a KA U2 "Get On Your Boots" rmx sampled by Samantha Ronson, the scene was humming with all that was said and unsaid. LP had his camera in full force (mad luv for that) and he captured some outstanding footage of DJ Sizzahandz throwing down some sexy Electro beats and DJ Riz doing the Old Skool set to change it up for good measure. Artists moved in and out of the venue throughout the course of both afternoons and we did our best to meet and greet as many as possible. We have to applaud Ricky and Johnny for their excellent hosting and networking facilitation because an immense amount of that transpired up within the hazed Miami skies. If networking wasn't unfolding in a direct point of contact, then it was occuring in the virutal world. Cell phones were EVERYWHERE at the events and texting was every bit a part of the non-verbal dialogue that fueled the WMC course of events. For example, after departing from the Moodswing poolside events, Fabian and Savior kept us in the loop via Twittersville about their location and current state of the party vibe at LIV with Mstrkrft and DJ AM! Living in multiple realities via our various portals became part of the inter-play that was continuous throughout the WMC. Parties were ongoing everywhere and we all lived vicariously throughout our virtual connections with peers.

The importance of connections for the Buzz was key on this inaugural trip and the biggest and keystone event for The Buzz to cover was the Friday Crooklyn Clan Official WMC Glass, Forge party!! We had been building up to this much anticipated event for weeks and once it was upon us, we were truly swept away. The event was booked at one of THE TOP EXCLUSIVE MIAMI NIGHT CLUBS (Rated #6 on http://www.nightcure.com/). The nightclub is located on 41st Street in Miami Beach. South Beach socialites all head to Glass at the Forge when the evening agenda calls for a night of upscale lounging. Glass is steeped in Hollywood history, starting off previously as a cigar lounge with private humidors for the likes of Oliver Stone and Bono. The venue was transformed when owner Shareef Malnik teamed up with Miami designer Allison Spear to create an upscale lounge space that packs in a star-studded crowd. Sizzahandz and Riz pulled out all the stops for the CC event and even had custom organic t-shirts created and badges for their artists and support team. The Buzz was quite honored by the gesture of receiving a shirt from The Crooklyn Clan and have subsequently worn it with pride!!!The night was truly magically for Fetty Be. It was not unlike attending a class reunion with the exception of never having met people face to face but having had countless online interactions prior to the WMC. Sizzahandz escorted us into the venue in such a way that we truly felt like A-listers ourselves and again we appreciated his kindness. The vibe was popping at about 11pm and there were a few scheduling logistics that had to be ironed out due to the mass number of DJ's hoping to get some deck time.

Everyone soon settled into the scene and again the business cards and CD's started to appear and disappear! We immediately met up with DeToto, and the The Disco Fries! Who greeted us with such enthusiasm and excitement. It was truly a rush in my belly to meet these artists who we admire so greatly. From that point we moved around the club, admired and captured it's class and glamor. She came off as a grand lady of grace...old skool elegance!!! Then we continued to network with more Crooklyn Clan featured artists and hopefuls: NVS, Danny Diggz, Red Bull Ron, David Savior, Fabian, Xmind, MoRada, Scooter, Dainjazone, Digital Dave, Neil Beats, Danny Rockz, Styles David, DDub, Krises, DJ KidA.V., Phenom, Alex Dreamz, Serafin, Martial (celebrity DJ and Top Cop for US Weekly), D-Nyce, Boneshaker, Smooth City Hustle, Class, John Farruggio, Nature, Risk One, Spryte, Danny Daze and Joe Maz of Discotech, Ody-Roc, Nova, and Justin James of The Bass Invaders...JUST TO NAME A FEW!

We found it difficult to settle into the VIP area despite the very kind and generous offer by Sizzahandz's beautiful Playmate Miss April 05 GF Courtney Culkin! She graciously introduced us to her colleague and fellow hostess Playmate Miss April 04 Kimberly Holland, who both kindly posed for a picture with Fetty Be!! Yet, I was on so much overload with meeting up with the artists, I just COULDN'T SIT DOWN!! I was JACKED!!! I felt the rush and the thrill not from alcohol, which the Crooklyn Clan kindly provided as a thank you gesture to it's artists, but I felt the adrenaline pumping and increasing in it's intensity with each artist I met!

This all culminated of course into a pinnacle moment in the night which I would tie back to that "musical orgy" reference that our Canadian DJ friend Issac noted in his description of the WMC!! Not to play favorites because The Buzz has mad respect for all of it's affiliated artists, but there are perfect party moments and we have written about this before. DJ JD (Crooklyn Clan featured artist) stated in his survey just this sentiment: "The biggest reward is the same as any type of performance.

DJ Digital Dave, DJ NVS, DJ Dainjazone, DJ Spryte, DJ Styles Davis....PLUS FETTY BE!

It's that moment, and it doesn't happen all the time, but it's that moment that you are one with the crowd. When they're feeding off your energy and vice-versa. It's the best feeling in the world and it's what you strive to create every time you touch the decks. I think the only word I could use to describe it, is ecstasy. " (DJ JD, August 2008) JD describes it perfectly...the highest vibe of the night occured with the start of Serafin's Electro set which transitioned into THE SET OF THE NIGHT and the WMC for Fetty Be. DJ Spryte and Kevin Scott did a set together and it was INCREDIBLE....

The Electro vibe to it was innovative and literally stunned the crowd, which says a lot based on the level of expertise in the audience. Spryte had this to tell us afterwards: "So here's a little about our set. Kevin Scott wanted to do something different for the WMC, so he suggested doing a 2X4 to me. We then talked to Sizzahandz and got a spot performing it at Glass, in Miami at the Crooklyn Clan Party. We both figured alot of the normal tracks we play out were gonna be covered by the other DJs on the night. So, we decided to take a risk and just play tracks we were both into, but didn't get to play out that much. We only had a couple times together to practice, due to work schedules and distance between where we live. But we ended up with about 40 minutes of material for our set. We structured our set based on Kev doing the beats and me doing all of the acapella fills and scratching. We were both very happy with how the set came out, it consisted of mostly House and Electro tracks. Were gonna do it live hopefully within the next week or so and record it. We're hoping to generate some interest and hopefully take it on the road this summer. " (DJ Spryte, April 1 09) It was amazing and generated a fabulous response from the mass number of artists in the house.

DISCOTECH!!!

Following that outstanding pinnacle moment, the vibe was jacked and so Discotech took the segway and pounded it home in true Discotech fashion. They dropped some of their trademark traxs, including the Love and Marriage anthem!! Even Siz was jumpin' on the lounges hollering with his hands up in the air. It was a high that I will never forget. I was sitting elevated up on a Sub with DJ's all around me...360 degrees...and baby it WAS A MOODSWING moment!! DJ's were raving and jumping up at Discotech in the booth, adrenaline was pumping, peeps were kicking back, as it was deep into the night!! Euphoria filled the joint and for that moment I wanted it all to freeze.

We were all IN THE SOUND together...just as U2's ballad screams out, "Let me in the sound!". Crooklyn Clan artists were united together to celebrate the pure joy and love of music for what it is. This perfect, but brief moment also allowed artists to forget the business aspect of their respective jobs and to re-kindle that spark of passion for their artform that ingnited years ago for most.

This unity for the sake of music appears to be the true purpose for the WMC and as diversified as the world is, the WMC we have learned becomes individually unique to each participant. When the week wraps up, the effects of this conference are far from over...in fact, they are just beginning. With new connections made and networking accomplished, the virtual world kicks into high gear and the page turns to a new chapter in the nightlife club world. The Buzz is certainly walking away from this inaugural WMC experience with not only a wealth of knowledge about the business side of the industry, but also with a greater appreciation for the power that music has to unify us all in the face of global turmoil and boundaries. This is an event that you MUST add to your to do list at least once in your life. We certainly have it on our calendar to do again next year and to explore more facets of the conference that we didn't even touch this round.

Hey Baybays!!! WOW!!! This has been quite a few weeks for the Buzz!! Between hittng Miami for our inaugural WMC trip and the follow up with the various new artists that we met and networked with...it's been OFF-THE-HOOK!!! We have a new website in the works and of course more hawt events are being planned as we speak for The Buzz to attend!!! As for my regular Fetty Cam and monthly hawt hits list...we are working on getting those back on the site. We took a wee break as we focussed on the Miami scene. I CAN'T WAIT to shoot another supa hawt Fetty Cam for you all. I've just got SO many exciting Buzzzzzzzzzzzin' things to tell you about! I'm going to change up my format this month. As you know Fetty Be is a bit of a Diva Queen in terms of her passion for House...so the list this month reflects more of this genre. In fact, we are going to be focussing on the how the pendulum has been swinging literally in the club scene and the taste for music is changing. DJ Tommy Diz touched upon this very point in his recent newsletter and stated that he and his colleague DJ Royale just put out a new cd called Pink Punch. They spent a long time developing it based on what they believe reflects the new wave of sound evolving in the nightlife world. We approached Tommy and asked if he might contribute an article in the upcoming weeks to The Buzz, exploring that topic on an even greater scale to share with you our readers!!! JOHN FARRUGGIO BIO

By the early age of 16, John began DJ-ing 2-4 nights a week at some of the Jersey Shores most popular teen nights, playing to over 3000 people per week. At age 19, he broke into the Philadelphia and New Jersey nightclub scene, playing at almost all of the area’s largest venues. In addition, he had landed a weekly residency at Shampoo; one of Philly’s largest and most famous nightclubs at that time, where he would play on the main floor for an attendence of 2000 – 4000 people!

John’s love for music did not stop at the turntables. In 2000, John began to make his own remixes and edits. In less than one week after finishing his first remix, “Heaven on Derb” was played in nightclubs around the U.S., and on radio mixshows (such as KTU and Q102). John used his knowledge of music and dancefloors, to continue to create club anthems.

In 2002, John commercially released some of his own house remixes on “White Label” vinyl. These records had become some of the best selling White Label vinyls of the year.

As Hip-Hop was making a radio and nightclub comeback in 2003, John extended his talents, and began to make his own Hip-Hop edits, soon to be referred to as “Mash-Ups”. Again, his music took off, and was instantly played on radio mixshows, and in nightclubs around the country.

In 2006, John was asked by the World Famous Crooklyn Clan (DJ’s Riz and Sizzahandz) to become an artist on the all-new “Vault” on CrooklynClan.net. Almost immediately, his mash-ups became some of the highest ranked on the website. Ever since, John has become one of the top selling mash-up artists in the U.S.A.

John did not stop there. He continued to produce and remix House music as well. In 2006, John had released 7 remixes on various record labels in the U.S. and the U.K. Some of which hit Billboard charts in both continents. Others were licensed on mixed CD compilations, and charted by some of the world’s biggest DJ’s! In addition, for over 3 years running, John expresses his “House Music” talent on Sirius Satellite Radio and iPartyRadio.com, every Friday and Saturday night across the U.S..

Today, John Farruggio, is known as one of the most energetic DJ’s in the tri-state area.. His sets are a constant mix of energy, ranging from Hip-Hop to House, and everything in between.

From Atlantic City to the Jersey Shore, from Philadelphia to Virginia Beach, and New York to Miami, John has spun at most of the top venues the east coast has to offer. He has played before celebrities such as Tara Reid, Jon Bon Jovi, Vanilla Ice, Paris Hilton, Bruce Springstein, Justin Timberlake, Puff Daddy, and Fabolous, to name a few.

There Is A New Diva In The San Fran Nightlife Scene And Her Name is...Infusion

San Francisco is truly a city with dual personalities and it definitely possesses a Ying to match it's Yang! With a nightlife scene that is as vibrant and as diverse as the city's demographics, it's no wonder that it's latest nocturnal dwelling, Infusion, offers the seekers of night time pleasures a chamber of decadence reminiscent of the days when the city propagated speakeasies. These were created underground and meant for illegal gambling and spirits during the prohibition. Since it's Grand Opening in January 2009, this luxury lounge has been dazzling it's patrons with it's absolutely breath-taking, Vegas-style decor and service! The C-Two Group (http://www.ctwogroup.com/ ) is responsible for this new high-end luxury ultra lounge that is located in Union Square.

It's a "$4.6 million project that includes 6500 square feet of entertainment space, 2 bars, a tapas-style Cal-Asian restaurant, an exclusive VIP room, a 2000 square foot Wenge hardwood dance floor, and state-of-the-art DJ booths, lighting and sound systems. The place is considered the most lavish nightclub build-out in San Francisco's history.
Christopher Rosas, CEO and President of C-Two Group declared, "With its luxurious ambiance, dramatic design, and 5-star service, Infusion will set a new standard for upscale nightlife in San Francisco". The subterranean club will have richly textured surfaces, undulating mosaic tiled walls, intriguing dragons, pulsating illuminated glass columns, opium lounging beds, a captivating meditation pool, and one of the largest, full-color holograms ever created. The lounge was created by Hong Kong designer Kinney Chan and drawing from Asian influences.
Rosas added, "Infusion Lounge will be the premiere nightlife experience in San Francisco, catering to both dancing hipsters and sophisticated young professionals looking to relax in style". Being connoisseurs of all that is NIGHTLIFE, this new luxury club destination was on our Buzz radar to size up and the perfect opportunity arose when we needed to hook up with our current feature DJ, Michael Toast... WHO just so happens to be a resident DJ at this swanky new SF club. With a newly designated music director, renowned SF radio and nightclub personality DJ E Rock, the entertainment segment of the venue was originally designed with intentions to provide and appears to be aiming to cover: "a wide range of eclectic ambient vibes to house, top-40 and mash-ups, DJs in two separate sound environments will entertain guests with a variety of music styles. With each night of the week designated to a specific genre of music, local and internationally-renowned DJs will be showcased." DJ Michael Toast....DJ/Performance Artist!

Our voyage to this opulent house of nightlife decadence began around 9:30pm on a Wednesday evening, which is Michael's designated resident night at Infusion. We arrived at the door of the club around 10:45pm. We struggled a bit to nail down a parking garage that remained opened past midnight, but finally found our reg spot over at Mason and O'Farrell. At the door we found hostess Keira there greeting patrons dressed in upscale attire, accompanied by some VERY big doormen!! The club is located right beside the Hotel Fusion (hotelfusion@hotelfusionsf.com), so it's definitely ideally situated near amenities...and UPSCALE ones at that!! Union Square is right there, so all of the trendiest shops are literally at ones finger tips!! We entered into the club with little to no wait, but then again it was an industry night AND in the middle of the work week at 11pm. Our first impression upon entry was the attention to detail and the exquisite Asian statues of the baby Buddha's mimicking "See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil", although their statues are out of order...Perhaps this a good omen? What happens at Infusion...stays at Infusion?

The colors red and black immediately assaulted the senses and the foyer truly invites the patron to descend into the seductive depths waiting and pulsating below. There is a massive circular screen that is suspended over the stairwell that is integrated into the decor to appear as a mirror or as a piece of art. It definitely showcases the club's state-of-the art technology in that it's modality is multi-functional. As we moved into the space, we had a deja vu of the speakeasy-inspired club Slide, located around the corner on Mason. The vibe feels secretive, selective....underground. Once inside the lush ultra lounge, it is VERY clear just how the final cost to this three year project was ultimately 4.6 million dollars.

Art, design, luxurious fabric, textiles, bevelled glass and plexi, stainless steel, track and spotlights, steel grid-covered columns up lit, LED-illuminated glass columns with a full-color animated hologram, multiple dance spaces, elevated and mobile DJ booths, extensive VIP areas with open areas for dancers (Anti-gravity aerial trapeze artists) and also closed-access VIP rooms. The whole space truly exudes decadence and exclusivity as an initial impression. At times the decor made me feel as if I was deep within a chamber inside the Earth with hawt lava surrounding me...again, thanks to the wizardry of Hong Kong designer Kinney Chan!!

I was MOST appreciative to see a coat-check with a standard charge of $3.00/item. That is a MUST have for Fetty Be, as the city can be cold and damp which leaves the female population at risk for exposure if no such service is offered by a club. On this particular night, a dance crew called Crunch (http://www.crunch.com/) were on hand to delight the patrons with their dancing savvy and artistry. This level of service indicates an intention to offer a night of COMPLETE sensory immersion. Not only are the visual and auditory senses pampered, but Infusion also caters to the gustatory senses. "Executive Chef Brian Beach provides a full menu of inventive Cal-Asian inspired small plates from 5-10 PM, with a limited menu available from 10 PM-1 AM." Tuna Poke Delicacy

The ideology behind this concept is to provide our clientele with the optimal level of personal customization, whether they are here for a private event or walking in without a reservation. In fashion, couture is when a designer is commissioned to create a particular piece of clothing for an individual. That garment is tailored specifically to fit the person’s exact measurements and desires. As I thought about the process a designer goes through to produce the final garment, I found it to also be a very fitting approach to creating the overall experience we want for our guests at Infusion Lounge.

Heartbeat....

As an ultra lounge, it is our job to provide guests with better food, service, drinks, and entertainment than they could find anywhere else. Whenever anyone asks me to describe Infusion Lounge, I always say that it is San Francisco’s first true “Hybrid Venue.” We offer a distinctive fusion of the three dominant aspects of the city’s nightlife scene: innovative and refined dining, a sophisticated precision-mixology driven bar, and a state-of-the-art venue drawing some of the world’s most exclusive and sought-after DJs. From these three elements, each of our guests is free to create his or her own ideal experience." (Brian Beach, cited from: http://infusionlounge.com/dining/ )On this evening we did not choose to sample the fare, but definitely would return another time, arrange for a table and enjoy the ambiance while delighting our taste buds with Chef Beach's assortment of Cal-Asian delicacies!

After taking a brief tour of the space and acclimatizing ourselves to the full extent of the club layout, including a quick visit to bejewelled unisex restrooms complete with full-time attendees, we approached the bar to order a drink. The wait was rather lengthy for a what might be labeled as a "slower" night. Despite the length of the bar and the good number of 'tenders, with only one bar space in the club...this might prove to cripple their rate of service to patrons eager to keep their buzz fed...which leads to unhappy, irritable customers. Another issue that was probably the MOST problematic for me about the whole club was the bottle neck that continually formed in front of the bar, between the two dance spaces. This same space logistics problem was noted in the Sacramento nightclub Dream and Danville club Blend, reviews that we did last year. It's actually a massive concern of mine in the event of a fire requiring rapid evacuation. I think the safety factor for Infusion probably would be covered due to multiple exit points and a very large, open VIP space located on the other side of the bar area that could easily accommodate a vacating crowd.

However, I can't even imagine what the club is like on a Friday or Saturday night when it's filled to capacity and body upon body are plugging up the space, making it virtually impossible to weave through the sea of milling club goers, without getting very personal. It appears the crowd and space issue is a common complaint as noted on Yelp.com. It also is a potentially explosive situation as drinks I am sure will get spilled on people due to lack of space and as the night grows late and the alcohol "infuses" more deeply into the blood stream....aggression or violence in a packed space could result in more injuries. Again, it's a space issue that frequently concerns me, as danger is never far away when alcohol, music and sex are mixed tightly together.

The Infusion Staff Monitoring The Crowd Closely...

The space certainly has a large number of employees actively moving around the club and monitoring patron behavior. We even witnessed one female patron being asked to leave as she was starting to engage in a disruptive behavior due to her consumption. Overall, the club agenda to maintain a high level of quality and standard is regimently enforced in all aspects of the club's operation. The fact that Michael Toast was hand-selected to be a resident DJ/Performance Artist in this gem of a venue, is testimony in itself that the owners want to offer the savvy pleasure seekers of the San Francisco night all that is unique and larger than life! Infusion night club is a space that accomplishes exactly what it's namesake refers to. Upon entry into this alternative voyeuristic world, the very act of engaging within this space opens the participant to experiencing a complete immersion into an extreme nightlife scenario, that will literally extract the energy of a person helping to create what the space is labelled as....an "INFUSION". This space is designed for only the most discerning and savvy in nightlife appreciation. Leaving the nightclub was difficult to do, as we were thoroughly enjoying our escapism during the middle of the work week and facing a long drive home. Yet, with the presence of 944.com and Eventvibe photographers, in addition with my own photographer LP, I left knowing that not only had I captured the essence of Michael Toast's grandiose performance, but I had experienced a full sensory immersion of the latest Diva in San Francisco's nightscape... Le Madame called....INFUSION!

It's ONLY fitting that I am able to complete this Part II portion of Michael Toast's Buzz feature ... AT AT AT NIGHT!!! Michael Toast is an artist who has captured our intrigue on many levels and the creature that evolves as the sun sets is the one that we would like to better understand through this final analysis. We first featured Michael on the Buzz last year in our Part I portion, where we identified his unique trademark performance attributes and labeled Toast as a pioneer in the art of DJ Performance Artistry.

We have featured MANY artists now on The Buzz and taking that credibility into account, it is with ease that we flag Michael as an anomaly. There doesn't appear to be a huge faction of artists within the DJ community who involve themselves so completely in the performance that they offer to the club or venue setting. With Michael it's different. He expresses his whole body in response to the music as he interfaces with it, which then results in more performance-based gigs, where Michael is as much a part of the music, as the music is part of Michael. If you've come to hear the music and dance, then you've come to see Michael's soul as it literally pours forth on to the decks and into the crowd. He wears his emotions outwardly and as part of getting the motivation that he needs to continue creating the party vibe, he exudes massive volumes of excitement, engages in air-guitar simulation, lip-syncs to the lyrics of a favorite song, hops up on the DJ booth to give a rock star inspired shout out...or stage dives to conjure RAVE days gone by! Just recently we witnessed all of this behavior from MT at Infusion night club and it is for these performance rituals that he is sought after by club owners and promoters. Michael possesses such a deep passion for his artwork that it spills forth almost every time he interfaces musically with crowds of people.

We have often heard now of DJ's referring to that magical circle of energy or vibe that is created when the DJ or artist is emanating emotion and then the club-goers reciprocate that energy back...I coin it "the mirror effect". It's a perfect moment when an adrenaline high can be attained just because a flow of energy is moving between two points of origin. Michael's innate DJ Performance Artistry naturally inclines him to achieve these intense performance highs more frequently, as the crowds feed off of the emotion that is exuded by the DJ. It's exciting to watch an artist become animated over his/her work and that is why Michael is so successful. Not every DJ could get away with making a grandiose entry into a gig wearing a straight jacket, simulating insanity and being accompanied by two super hawt naughty nurses as Michael did last year at Aura, CA. Although the patrons were somewhat stunned by Toast and perhaps the stunt was a bit extreme for the Bay Area, Michael's drive to be original in his artwork and perception has been genuinely life long.With a 70's inspired punk Mohawk hairstyle and charcoal eyeliner etched onto his current skin, the DJ known as MT comes out to play hardcore at night adorned with his performance alter ego.
