If you’ve read some of my posts, you know that in the past I didn’t do well when buying gifts. I have enough trouble remembering what my own shirt size is without having to surreptitiously try to discover a friend’s or family member’s size. I’ve bought gifts for friends that I see eight months later behind the weed whacker in their garage, covered in cobwebs. My daughter let me in on a gift-giving secret (probably because she’s seen me flounder for years buying gifts). She insisted that the best gift most people could receive from me is a gift certificate.

Her logic goes like this. A gift certificate makes people happy twice. They smile the first time when they receive the gift certificate, the second time when they received the item that they bought with it. The item is usually one they have always wanted but could never afford, or it was something they needed but no one else knew they needed. She said the person who gives a gift certificate is ultimately showing respect for the recipient’s individual tastes and needs.

So that’s what I now do when I give a gift.

If you’ve read some of my other posts, you probably guessed I’ve never been much of a wine guy. But my wife, the connoisseur, loves the stuff. I don’t honestly know a thing about wine. Once my wife asked if we had a nice rosé to go with dinner and I told her that we could mix a bottle of red wine with some white. She assumed I was joking. Uh, yeah Honey, just joking.

So searching for a gift this year was kind of tough, especially since I know so little about wines. Fortunately, I read up a little on wine cellars. What I discovered was that keeping wine in a standard refrigerator wasn’t good for it. What my wife needed was a thermoelectric wine cooler. In the process, I found this year’s perfect gift that won’t cost me my corkscrewing arm and beer-steadied leg.

Avanti makes a terrific wine chiller that doesn’t take up too much floor space and maintains dual zone temperatures so that the wife can chill both white and red wines at the same time. (Hey, I didn’t realize that reds and whites should be stored at different temperatures, but there you go!) The Avanti EWC18DZ Wine Cooler holds up to EIGHTEEN bottles of wine, has auto defrost, and comes with slide-out chrome shelves.

This Avanti Wine Cooler uses special thermoelectric technology to provide ideal storage for wine. Most refrigerators use a compressor, which vibrate when running and can disturb the sediment in fine wines as well as destroy wine integrity caused by keeping them too cold or too warm. Thermoelectric wine coolers have no moving parts, so no sediment-disturbing vibrations, and uses electricity to precisely maintain temperatures and humidity to properly protect and age your wine.

My wife is going to love it!

And the best part? The price didn’t make me wince. Check it out!

Anyone who knows me knows that I love beer. When friends come over for dinner they know that I’d rather have a beer given to me than a bottle of wine. To me, beer is and always has been, the perfect gift. So my wife asked what I wanted as a gift this year, I told her the truth. A beer dispenser, naturally!

Usually when you think of beer dispensers, you think that you have to pay an arm or a leg for one. Nope. Case in point: The Avanti MBD5L Mini Pub Beer Dispenser. It’s not all that expensive, is completely portable to take up to the cabin or put on the boat, and includes everything a beer drinker like me could want. It’s compact enough to fit on a counter, uses any standard 5 liter mini beer keg out there, and has a digital display for the temperature.

The other gift I’d love would be a beverage center or one of those compact fridges to store beer and soda. Avanti carries compact refrigerators to fit just about everyone’s budget. Check out the complete line of Avanti small fridges as well as the Avanti beverage center.

So take it from me, rather than leave it up in the air about what gift you want, dodge the bullet of getting an awful sweater that you’ll never wear or some other thing you hate. Ask for a gift you really want. You’ll thank them the whole year long (every time you quench your thirst).

She’d seen several of the chefs on that cooking network use this very mixer and had pined after it for months.

This mixer is amazing. It plows through work. It professionally mixes bread dough, and makes short work of cakes, cheesecakes and brownies. My wife loves it! There are tons of attachment options available for it too, so future gift buying suddenly became easy. For her birthday I bought her the grinder attachment, and that weekend I ate the most perfectly seasoned homemade sausage I’ve ever tasted. She now goes to the butcher shop, gets the cheapest cut of beef she can, and makes her own ground beef. Fresh, tasty, and even healthier because she makes it with less fat.

KitchenAid quality is unbeatable, so even if you already have a mixer, there are other great products to choose from.

If you’re a frequent host, or just love to entertain, knowing the right wines can make the experience even more enjoyable for you and your guests. When paired with the right food combinations, served at the right temperature, and aged perfectly, a wine becomes more than a beverage – it becomes an experience. These are some of the essentials you need to know when it comes to one of the world’s oldest, and most sophisticated beverages.

Wine comes in a wide variety of shades, or intensities of flavor. Traditionally, red wine boasts a bolder, more robust flavor, while white wine has a more delicate taste. Each wine is unique, as it is cultivated to achieve a specific flavor. Wines can be enjoyed on their own or with the right combination of appetizer, entree, or dessert. Several of the most popular wine varieties include:

Chardonnay

A velvety tasting white wine, usually fermented in oak barrels and flavored with citrus or tropical fruit notes. Perfect pairing for fish and chicken entrees.

Sauvignon Blanc

Versatile and light, this crisp white wine can have a more herbal flavor, but can have notes ranging from tropical to sour green fruits. Pairs well with seafood, poultry, and salads.

Merlot

An easy to drink red wine, Merlot can be paired well with many food dishes, ranging from red meats to tomato sauces. It has a bold herbal and almost cherry-like flavor.

Remember, just knowing the types of wine is the beginning. Cultivate your knowledge by learning the right serving methods to impress your guests and give them a great wine drinking experience.

Wine Storage Refrigerators can be an excellent addition to your kitchen or entertaining area, as it gives you the potential to store and serve your wine collection at the right temperatures to ensure superior taste and quality. You’ll be the toast of your next special event!

FFEMAX has now moved our sales and IT department’s into our office building on 20 Hawley St. and our Customer Service department to our new warehouse on Alice St. Upgrading our employee base and spread ourselves out is just the first step in a growing company. With the economy in a recession one might ask, “Why now?” or “What about 3 months from now?”, and our response is simple, demand. We are expanding because our customer base has grown to such a volume we need to accommodate your needs as a customer. Given the size of our new warehouse we should be able to stock and ship our orders to service the entire eastern seaboard instead of from several locations.

Pictures of our warehouse construction project will be posted soon! Please stay tuned and check back frequently for updates on our status!

Never plug an air conditioner into a conventional extension cord; only use a heavy-duty extension cord that is suited for your unit. Surge protectors are also suggested to avoid damage during storms and power surges.

Be sure you are selecting the appropriate air conditioner for the size of the room. Buy as much as you need, but not more than you need. (More BTU’s mean more cooling capacities). If you have a high BTU air conditioner in a small room, you may be wasting energy (and money)!

Ensure your air conditioner unit is supported properly; most units come with a brace kit, but additional braces may be necessary. For window units, use wooden wedges between the top of window frame and the top of the open window; this will prevent the air conditioner from falling if someone accidentally tries to open the window.

Think efficiency! Clean filters regularly; this prevents allergens and allows the unit to work more efficiently. Also, don’t use the air conditioner when it isn’t needed.

While we’re rejoicing the end of winter here, it’s easy to remember the warmer months in a halcyon haze and not as the dog days they really are. It won’t be long before high temps and humidity make us long for at least the autumn cool (who wants winter back, really?). Because we’re conscientious bloggers, here are a few hot tips for keeping cool when the summer heat turns oppressive (and no, we won’t say we told you so).

Keep hydrated: Lemonade and iced tea aren’t summer staples for nothing. A refreshing beverage with a scoop of ice is just the thing to lower your temperature. If you’re going to be working in the yard on any of the dozen ‘summer projects’ that pile up over the colder months, make sure you have something cool to drink at hand. Keeping cool and hydrated will help to prevent heat stroke. Keeping cool and hydrated will help to prevent heat stroke.

Be shady: It’s significantly cooler in shaded areas. So opt for a spot under a tree or on an enclosed porch when you’re doing some mid-day lounging. If you can’t retreat to shade, be sure to wear a hat.

Two words: Air Conditioning: Whether you’re in a house or apartment, living in the city or country, one constant is that AC is awesome. If your current unit is getting a bit old, that can put a big strain on your energy bill, so think about upgrading to newer, energy-efficient Amana or LG air conditioners for your home.

The ultimate in summer cool: String up a hammock. It won’t keep you cool in and of itself, but it’s a great way to relax in the shade with that icy beverage we discussed earlier. Besides, when your friends and neighbors spy you lounging in the yard, you’ll certainly look cool.
