Adoptions:
We did not have any adoptions this week.

Intakes:

We are FULL, but...

WOW, what a week---we brought in 10 kitties this week and named them all. Hang on, this is a long one!

On Wednesday, a gentleman brought in a teeny tiny kitten, about a month-old. One glance and we determined that this kitty must have been thrown from a car. She needed immediate medical attention. Her lip just didn't look right. She went to Dr. Darcy's office to have a button installed to "fix" the issue. (More about button lip surgery is listed below). This kitty is a gray tiger. She returned on Thursday from her surgery and was having a tough time breathing. We weren't sure that she was going to make it. On Friday morning, she was eating and playing. All looks good for now, although we are treating an upper respiratory issue and lice. This girl was named SCAMPER. Her name was taken from the Name a Cat Program and submitted by SonJa. Here are the results of the vote:

The tie was broken when Megan polled those in the Center.

While Megan was intaking Scamper, Debbie was on the phone with a lady that was visiting from Texas and staying in an Airbnb. A little girl kitten had shown up and was very hungry. This little girl is about 2 1/2 months old and is a tortie with a gold crown on her forehead. She is pretty healthy but does have worms. This girl was named VALERIE. Her name was taken from the Name a Cat Program and submitted by Eric Yacks. Here are the results of the vote:

When Cindy picked up Scamper from Dr. Darcy's office, she also brought back another button lip baby that Dr. Darcy had been caring for. This one had already had her button removed, all shots and her spay. Dr. Darcy's daughter's best friend actually saw this kitty being thrown from a car. This little inky girl is about 3-4 month's old. She was named VAMPY. Her name was taken from the Name a Cat Program and submitted by Sharon M. Here are the results of the vote:

Also on Thursday, someone found two infant boys only 2 days old. No Momma in sight. Both babies were brought to FFRC to be bottle-fed, switching between Debbie and Megan. Friday morning, one of the little baby boys had passed. Megan named this kitty, JASPER. His grey tiger brother is taking his food. We hope that this one will make it. The surviving boy was named BABY WHISKERSON. His name was taken from the Name a Cat Program and submitted by Anony. Here are the results of the vote:

Just when we thought we were done with our intakes, we received 5 more precious babies. We did know about these five, so had been planning on bringing them in as soon as they were weaned from their Momma. These five babies are now 5-6 weeks old and are Siamese looking kitties, or Meezers. They look so much alike, that they now have color-coded collars so that we can keep them straight.

The first is a male with an orange collar. This boy was named ARULEN. His name was taken from the Name a Cat Program and submitted by Anony. Here are the results of the vote:

Here's a picture of Momma. She is feral but is contained in the barn. She will be spayed on 10/27 during our next Humane Ohio event.

OK, but these are Siamese looking babies. Guess they didn't get their looks from Momma. Here's Daddy. He is also feral and has not yet been caught. The babies look like their Daddy!

Health Updates:

We are monitoring all of our new intakes. Most had not yet been tested. All of our other kitties are doing great.

Holds:

SMUDGES will be going home as soon as FIP treatment is complete. A reunion with DOLLY, formerly SHINE, will be a happy one.

BEAZLEE and WYNN are both on hold and will be going to the same household. The adoption is currently planned for 10/24 at 1:30.

Button Lip Procedure:

In veterinary medicine, the term “button lip” usually refers to the labial button technique — a surgical method used to temporarily fix a cat’s jaw after certain injuries, such as temporomandibular joint (TMJ) luxation or caudal mandibular fractures YouTube+1.

What the “Button” Technique Is

The labial button technique involves placing small “buttons” (sutures) on the lip to hold the upper and lower jaws in proper alignment while healing occurs.

Modified labial button technique (Goodman & Carmichael, 2016) uses a single suture line for all three buttons, with only one knot secured on the ventral chin Quizlet.
It is noninvasive, easy to apply, and can be maintained for 7–14 days after TMJ reduction, or up to 5 weeks for complex fractures Quizlet.

Here is a picture of SCAMPER with her button. As Megan explained, many of these injuries are a result of being thrown from a car. A cat normally lands on its feet; however, when a vehicle is moving, they are unable to get their balance and often land face first. This causes the lip and the gums to separate.

Events:

On Tuesday, 10/13, we sent 49 kitties to be spayed and neutered, 22 females and 27 males. This included our own NIGEL, JACKMAN, ZEEBA, GARY, WYNN and MOOCHER.

Adoptions:

We started the week on Sunday, October 4th, with the adoption of SHINE, now named DOLLY. Her name was decided because Shine made the new adopters think of Sparkle, and who didn't Sparkle more than Dolly? On 6/7/26, Dolly arrived with siblings, BEAZLEE and NIGEL. They had been found in a muddy pile of leaves in someone's yard. They all were filthy and had infected eyes. Dolly was the worst. These tiny babies had been born on 5/17/26, so were very young. There was no momma in sight, so they were brought to FFRC to be bottle fed and cared for by their adopted momma, Debbie. The new adopters, Chris and Ali, originally came in to adopt SMUDGES; however, Dolly had other ideas. She took one look at Chris and said, "You are my DADDY!" She even hissed when other kitties got near. Smudges will be going home as soon as the FIP treatment is complete, so never fear--this one also has a home. Dolly didn't have far to travel. Her new home is in Bryan, OH--only about a half hour away. This is also were Dr. Darcy and Fountain City Animal Hospital are located. Special Thanks to Mod Terri for the blanket for Dolly!

We are FULL, but...

Unfortunately, we had a return last Saturday. KABUKI had been recently adopted with PASCAL. Kabuki wasn't happy being away from FFRC and became a bit disruptive. PASCAL is doing fine. Kabuki is back in the Main Room after a brief quarantine in Back Thumpers Room.

Another kitty was found at a lady's boyfriend's workplace. She initially brought him home, but he was so riddled with fleas, worms and any other parasites imaginable that she did not feel comfortable having the kitty in her home with her infant. He was brought to FFRC with the hopes that he could be taken in--even though we were full. If FFRC did not take him, he would have been released to fend for himself. Megan and Lynnette bathed him, started treatment on him and fed him. He was very happy to be clean, flea-free and full of food. He went to sleep making biscuits He came in at 5.6 lbs., but is already gaining weight. After 202 votes. we named this boy RICH. His name came from the Name a Cat Program and was provided by BillyPogo.

Health Updates:

All FIP kitties are responding well to their treatment.

CHEWIE had been placed in the Cove to see if she would be happier with a bit more freedom. Cindy has been working with her and she seems to be enjoying the Cove more than being a 100% indoor kitty.

See Ya, September--October is Taking Over!

As we reached the end of September, we recognized World Rabies Day:

It is celebrated annually to raise awareness about rabies prevention and to highlight progress in defeating this horrifying disease.

28 September also marks the anniversary of Louis Pasteur's death, the French chemist and microbiologist, who developed the first rabies vaccine.

Today, safe and efficacious animal and human vaccines are among the important tools that exist to eliminate human deaths from rabies while awareness is the key driver for success of communities to engage in effective rabies prevention. www.who.int

Adoptions:

On Wednesday, 9/30, SAZAZ got her new home. This beautiful orange girl traveled all the way to Debbie's house. I'm sure she was exhausted from her travels!!! The story surrounding Sazaz is a sad one. Her date of birth is 4/11/20. On 4/22/21, she was brought in for her spay and never picked up. This was the 1st abandonment. She was adopted a couple months later on 6/12/21, where she lived until the woman that had her had a life change. She gave up both Sazaz and PINKY to her father, abandonment #2. He kept both cats locked in a garage, where they became filthy and flea ridden. He eventually called FFRC and said he lived over an hour away and was returning them. Within 10 minutes he was at FFRC and these poor kitties were abandoned again, #3. FFRC scrambled to find a cage to house the kitties until the intake could be completed. Pinky was adopted on 9/10/25 by a gentleman that worked at FFRC, but Sazaz had to wait another year. After being let down by humans for so many years, this healthy 12.8 pounder has found her FUREVER home. We will be hearing updates very often and we know that this time, her human will not let her down.

The next adoption was a double one on Friday, October 2nd. VIVIAN and JUNIPER went home with a Chatter/Lurker who wanted to adopt a couple of quiet kitties. They are now residents of the Show-Me State, Missouri. That' was about a 7-hour drive. Both kitties will be keeping their name.

Vivian's date of birth is 9/30/22 . She came to us on 4/22/26 and came from a hoarding situation. She and CHICA were fostered at that time, but brought back. She is a beautiful mostly white calico with two different-colored eyes.

Juniper's date of birth is 10/28/21 . On 5/8/24, she was brought in by a woman whose neighbor was shooting at her. She is a very shy girl and has been staying in Back Thumpers Room. During her stay, she has been a very sweet "momma" to the babies that shared the room with her.

Once these babies got home, we heard about Juniper and Vivian!!!! Juniper is loving watching tv, so is Vivian! Vivian slept with Mama on Friday night and Juniper was sitting on her lap!! Great strides already for these shy ladies!

The last adoption of the week was on Saturday, 10/3. This time it was ZOOKY! She will be the only Queen of her Castle, with one parent retired and the other working from home. Thank you KatKrzy and ParkBomYu for the blankets! Zooky's date of birth is 4/22/21 (but she may be older). She arrived on 4/22/26 along with MIMBLE, CHICA and VIVIAN. She was part of a hoard of 29 cats. She is a beautiful brown/white long-hair tiger that loves to tell everyone stories. She is now a Pittsburgh Pirates fan!

We had a return on Tuesday, 9/22. The kitty MEOWDITH, now named CASPER, experienced a home-life change, which saddened everyone. He was originally adopted as a baby, but is now about 3 years-old and is a BIG BOY! He is an inky with only one eye.

We also received a kitty that our friend and volunteer, Barb, had been taking care of. She waited until we could fit in another kitty, which happened this week. This little bunny-soft grey girl is about 3 months old and still needs her vaccines and her spay. She was recently named CLARICE. This name was chosen from the Name a Cat Program with 88 votes. Thank you, Michelle H. for submitting this name.

Health Updates:

We had a bit of a rough week last week. PHILOMENA and most of her babies have FIP. (More on FIP below). She and her babies, SMUDGES and RUMER are isolated in a newly decorated (thanks Mary) Paddy's Place with SMIDGEN. RENLY and PASCAL do not show signs of FIP. Renly is still at FFRC and Pascal was recently adopted. We are keeping in touch with Pascal's adopters. Smidgen is not really one of Philomena's babies, but we believe she may have comfort nursed and contracted FIP in that manner. This week, we are happy to report that the treatment seems to be working. The youngsters love their pay gym, but Momma, Philomena, isn't all that thrilled to be cooped up with them.

All of the kitties are responding well to their FIP treatment. We are very grateful that there now is a way to save FIP kitties, but it is expensive, in both dollars and in time spent administering the treatment. Each treatment lasts about 84 days with pills being given twice a day at a per kitty cost of about $1,100 for the full-course. Megan came to the camera with the news of these babies and within a couple of hours, $1,545 had been raised. We are still hovering around this total. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts and the bottom of our kitties' paws!

CHEWIE has been unhappy since she was brought to us, perhaps the trauma of being left. She had been found at a local fire station in a backpack carrier and had a collar. She had definitely been someone's kitty. Initially, Chewie was in Back Thumper's Room where she stayed hidden in a litter box, 100% of the time. She was moved to the floor in Back Thumper's Room, where she stayed hidden 100% of the time. She was then brought up to Nyota's Nest to see if she would relax with the ladies. She cowered and stayed hidden again 100% of the time. (She's consistent). We are trying to find a place that she can be happy and relaxed. So now she is in the Cove, where she can be in a safe enclosed outside area or inside. She seems to be coming out of her shell a bit. Cindy will be working with her. She is in good hands.

SHINE is also on hold. Her adoption will be on 10/4 at 1 - 1:30 pm.

Servalan still races to meet me wherever I go, his biggest heartbreak in life is if I go into the bathroom without him. Whenever I come home from work he makes sure he’s the first person to greet me and runs to me meowing. He listens just like a dog and if I call for him he’ll come running, even if he’s all the way across the house. His known for his big arm stretches, whenever he gets comfortable his arms are stretched way out in front of him

Sully is my 24/7 cuddler, if I even lay down for a moment his right on top of my chest, he can never be close enough and always wants cuddles. He LOVES to look out the window and would literally ditch everything else in life just to look outside. He is also now obsessed with my closet and demands to be in there, he has now discovered how to open it and has doomed me with having to shut my closet 24/7. He is my sweetest little love bug who’s always there for me to love on

I will forever be grateful to FFRC for what they do and for them bringing me my soul cats. I genuinely don’t know what I would do without these two. They are the highlight of my day and bring me so much joy. I love them so very much and while I was sad they were at FFRC for so long, I am so grateful they were because I was able to bring them home

This month...

We said "Goodbye" to:

TAYLA: We started off the month with the sudden loss of our sweet little girl. We mourn her but are also grateful we could help her live the best short life she possibly could. She was in rough shape when she came in but we were able to make her feel better, she had fun with friends, had her very own mama in Schmookie, and even had a family lined up to adopt her. She may have had a limited time here on earth but it was time spent well cared for and well loved.

A new little gray girl. She was fostered by one of our former volunteers and then brought in. She is very pretty and lovey.

We've had a very few intakes this month simply because WE ARE FULL. Beyond capacity. There's only so many kitties we can responsibly take in. We really need to get more of the kitties placed in their Forever Homes so we can take in more. You can help us do it! Please SHARE OUR ADOPTION POSTS! Share the ones already posted, share the ones coming up. Liking and commenting helps, too. But sharing in groups really gets the word out. We'll adopt out to anywhere in the U.S. so keep that in mind!

We said "Have a Great Life!" to:

DOLLY! Surprised? Neither were we! A lady that stunning was bound to go fast. Her name is now MOCHI.

BUEHLER! His humans came in to look at another kitty but he told them "Uh, no. I'm your guy!" They saw his point and took him home where he has settled in perfectly and is loving life. He is keeping his name.

LEMON! This little lady has been transformed from a muddy tiny kitten trapped under a shed to a beautiful, elegant fluff with her very own Forever Home! She is keeping her name.

THOR & MALADE! After spending nearly their whole lives with us, these two have been reunited with their brother, ZEKE! We'll miss them but they are loving life at their very own home and we couldn't be happier for them. They are keeping their names.

PASCAL & KABUKI! These two were snagged up together! Pascal will be keeping his name while Kabuki is now SALLY.

WILLOW! Our little spotted lady has found her people! She even has her own little girl to grow up with. She is keeping her name.

BABITA! She is going to live in a college dorm where she will no doubt be a star resident! Her name is TBD.

FOZZIE & DIEGO! These two sociable guys were adopted together and are now no doubt wreaking havoc in a home of their own! They are keeping their names.

SAZAZ! This lovely lady has made the long trip home with volunteer Debbie. She will be the only kitty and no doubt will be treated as the queen she is! She is keeping her name.

Yes. You read that correctly.

THREE THOUSAND, TWO HUNDRED AND FORTY SCOOPS.

Somebody please send our scoopers a trophy.

But behind all these numbers is something much bigger.

Every treatment is a kitty receiving care.

Every vaccine helps keep a cat healthy.

Every spay or neuter helps prevent future homelessness.

Every phone call and email is someone looking for help, information or resources.

Every adoption means another FFRC kitty finally has a family of their own.

And every one of those 3,240 scoops means our cats had a clean, comfortable place while they waited.

Rescue is so much more than what you see on camera. It’s medical care, cleaning, laundry, emails, phone calls, appointments, adoptions, prevention, paperwork…and apparently an Olympic amount of litter scooping.

133 cats. 12 adoptions. 110 public spay/neuters. 863 treatments. 3,240 scoops. One month.

That’s September at FFRC.

And we couldn’t do any of it without our incredible staff, volunteers, donors, supporters and FFRC Nation.

Events:

Tuesday, 9/29, was Humane Ohio Day. We sent up 24 females and 31 males, including our own, IVA, SHINE, BEAZLEE and CALLAHAN. I previously reported that Iva went for her spay on the last Humane Ohio Day--OOPS!

Our next flash sale will be October 7th at 11am.

Megan will be on vacation from Monday, 10/5 until Friday, 10/9. She will be in over the weekend.

No Q & A for Friday, October 9th.

Hikaru Human writes and maintains the Instagram page for FFRC. For the month of October, we will have an Inky Takeover. She will be featuring our inky kitties every Thursday.

Volunteer and Staff party will be on 11/14. If you would like to contribute to our celebration, here is info on our numbers: FFRC has 28 volunteers and staff that keep the Center running smoothly.

Kitty Christmas will be 12/5. We will start taking Kitty Christmas donations the first of November.

FFRC Blog Week Ending September 26, 2026

IT'S FALL Y'ALL!

A special day was honored this week. The International Day of Peace, also officially known as World Peace Day, is a United Nations-sanctioned holiday observed annually on 21 September. It is dedicated to world peace, and specifically the absence of war and violence, such as might be occasioned by a temporary ceasefire in a combat zone for humanitarian aid access. The day was first established in 1981 and first observed in September 1982 and is kept by many nations, political groups, military groups, and people. from Internationaldayofpeace.org

Take a minute to review what you can personally add to a peaceful world. Is it a purring kitten on your lap, a meditative moment offering kindness and love to yourself and others, or just a smile and nod to someone in need.

Adoptions:

On 9/22/26, our sweet ball of fluff, BABITA, went to live in a dorm at Defiance College. Her date of birth is 3/1/26. She was found and brought to FFRC on 6/19/26. She is the only dorm kitty and is currently keeping the name of Babita--but this might change. She is ready for dorm-life and even has her eye makeup on!

On Saturday, 9/26, Steve and Cathy (from Chatters Weekend) adopted FOZZIE and DIEGO. Originally, only Fozzie was going home with them, but when they met Diego--it was love at first sight, I mean first cuddle. The kitties now live near Detroit, so they had a bit of a ride.

Diego's date of birth is 5/28/26. He was found in someone's yard and arrived at FFRC on 7/28/26. He is an adorable tuxie with a black dot over his pink nose. He will be keeping his name.

Fozzie's date of birth is 4/6/26. He arrived with his sister, SMIDGEN on 4/21/26. They were found in a barn with another sibling that had passed. Fozzie and Smidgen were bottle-fed babies, so it really is wonderful to see them grow up! Fozzie will also be keeping his name.

Special Thanks to Jabber, who supplied blankies for each of these adoptees.

We are making this our home and are loving laying on our new Daddy!

Intakes:

We are FULL, but...

We also received a kitty that our friend and volunteer, Barb, had been taking care of. She waited until we could fit in another kitty, which happened this week This little grey girl is about 3 months old and has not yet been named. She is bunny-soft and still needs her vaccines and her spay.

Pictures of these intakes will be provided in next week's blog.

Health Updates:

We had a bit of a rough week. PHILOMENA and most of her babies have FIP. She and her babies, SMUDGES and RUMER are isolated in a newly decorated (thanks Mary) Paddy's Place with SMIDGEN. RENLY and PASCAL do not show signs of FIP. Renly is still at FFRC and Pascal was recently adopted. We are keeping in touch with Pascal's adopters. Smidgen is not really one of Philomena's babies, but we believe she may have comfort nursed and contracted FIP in that manner.

All of the kitties are responding well to their FIP treatment. We are very grateful that there now is a way to save FIP kitties, but it is expensive, in both dollars and in time spent administering the treatment. Each treatment lasts about 84 days with pills being given twice a day at a per kitty cost of about $1,100 for the full-course. Megan came to the camera with the news of these babies and within a couple of hours, $1,545 had been raised. (We will update you as the total increases.) It is thanks to all of you that we can give these kitties a chance. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts and the bottom of our kitties' paws!

SAZAZ will be going home very soon. She doesn't have to travel far. Our own Debbie will be taking in another big kitty for her very own. We are so happy for Debbie and Sazaz!!!! Date of adoption is coming soon!

ZOOKY is officially on hold. The date has not yet been set for this beautiful and TALKATIVE lady to be going to her new home. She will be the only Queen of her Castle, with one parent retired and the other working from home. Thank you KatKrzy for the blanket!

SHINE is also on hold. Her adoption will be on 10/4 at 1pm.

We have a lot of applications that we are reviewing, so look for more holds and adoptions soon!

Mac and Piccolo turn 4 today! Here are some fun details about each of them that you might not know:

Mac (Macaroni at FFRC) is a little brainiac. We call him Feleinstein (feline + Einstein) because he's always problem-solving and using his words to communicate. He loves playing fetch, especially with pom pom balls. He prefers to lay in odd places like the dining room table and the middle of the floor. For snuggle time, he lays right on our chest and purrs really loudly while getting chin scratches. He's a big licker.

Piccolo (Pickles at FFRC) is the empath. If I'm crying, she'll come running over to me and nibble my arm to cheer me up. She'll go into rooms on command. She has the most adorable coo when she meows, and when she purrs, you can hear the little squeaks of her voice. She prefers playing with odd-shaped toys that she can kick in random directions. For snuggle time, she enjoys going under the covers and rotating around to get even numbers of head and butt pets. Then she'll finally lay down and is happy as long as she's making skin-to-skin contact with her human. She's sniffing and licking my hair as I write this .

Every day is a celebration with these two. They're such special companions!

Special thanks to Tony and Stephanie! We see them every couple of weeks holding kitties up to the camera, but they also contribute their employee share of pet food from IAMS to us and other needy organizations. Tony recently saw a Purina commercial that stated that very few domestic violence shelters allow pets to remain with their owners during their tough transition out of terrible circumstances. He found that only about 17% of the shelters allow pets (which are emotional support to those at the shelters). A goal has been established to raise the percentage to 25%. Tony contacted the YWCA in Toledo, Ohio and asked if they would be interested in pet food donations--and they agreed. IAMS currently has a list of organizations that support Canine Units and Humane Societies. Those on the list receive one pallet of pet food per month. He approached his boss to add the YWCA to the list. Tony donates his monthly allotment to both a Toledo Animal Shelter and FFRC. Thanks to Tony's dedication to this cause, his co-workers are also donating their monthly allotment of pet food. Please join me in thanking Tony for all of his generosity in helping pets in Northwest Ohio live better lives. Also, remember he and Stephanie recently adopted DOLLY, now MOCHI! She is getting along great now sand sleeps on Stephanie's pillow.

FFRC Blog Week Ending September 19, 2026

We wrapped up Chatters Weekend on 9/13 with Coffee and Doughnuts sponsored by Timbit and SonJa!

We chatted throughout the morning and slowly and sadly, many of us started for home. We take with us wonderful memories and newfound friendships.

Megan's husband, Eric, took GIZMO for a walk on his new chain. A big chain for a big doggy!

Adoptions:

On Monday, 9/14, we said "Home Sweet Home" to our sweet WILLOW. Her date of birth is 3/16/26. On 3/26/26, at only 10-days old, a woman had found her in her yard--she waited a day and no momma cat ever showed up. After arriving at FFRC, Willow was bottle fed, along with LEMON. Willow's new home is about 45 minutes away. She will share her new home with a 3-year-old kitty that is the Household Greeter! Willow will be keeping her name.

Health Updates:

All of our other kitties are doing great!

MISS JEWEL is enjoying her new home and even her new brother, THOMAS, who is a bully!

The bonded pair of JACCI and HEINZ were adopted a year ago. These two were originally trapped and brought into FFRC when Heinz had a broken jar neck stuck on his head. They were both considered feral. Jokes on us. These two are not even close to being feral. Jacci was more shy than Heinz, but now that she feels safe she is just as friendly and even demands pets.

Our Friend RITA:

On 9/13/25, we lost a dear Friend, Admin, Mod, Blogger, Dream Weaver and Fabulous Storyteller--RITA, also known as Canton Cat on YouTube.

I have had the honor to write the Blog since last Fall, but no one will ever come anywhere close to Rita's writing talent. She had such a wonderful way of turning a phrase and adding her own twist with just enough humor! She was a very special person. Please take a moment to rejoice in having known such a wonderful lady.

Here are exerts from a post that Rita sent last September:

Hi Friends. Some of you know this, but most do not.

Earlier this year I took a fall in the ice (February). It led to a blood clot that was treated in the hospital. During one of my tests while in the hospital a fairly large tumor was discovered on my liver. A biopsy showed it was cancerous and had progressed significantly.

A trip to a Boston hospital confirmed that due to a preexisting lung issue, I was not a candidate for surgery.

I’ve been undergoing a series of treatments (chemo/immunotherapy) which has taken a toll on me in ways I could not have imagined. I’ve remained upbeat and positive but am also a realistic person.

I’ve been on oxygen for five years now after having been diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension in 2019. At the time I was told I probably was looking at 2 to 3 years of, well, life. It’s 2025 and I’m still here.

Some of you may not know this, but I lived in the Ground Zero area of downtown New York from 1998 to 2007 (John Street). I have been told by several specialists that my exposure to the toxic air at the Ground Zero area for several years while the area was cleared could have greatly contributed to my breathing issues.

While I will never know if my lung issues and cancer are related to my exposure to the toxins in the area at the WTC site, people can draw their own conclusions.

Be well my friends, be well. And please never forget that some wounds can be seen, so many more cannot.

You are never alone. Your fight is a fight we all take up, and some of us need to do it privately. Strength comes from hope for a better tomorrow. Strength comes with peace.

Remembering Rita

It’s hard to believe that one year has passed since we lost our dear friend, Rita.

Rita was so much more than a supporter of FFRC. She was part of our family. She believed deeply in what we do, loved our kitties, and gave so much of herself to this rescue and to all of us.

Many of you knew Rita as the wonderful writer behind our FFRC blog. But calling her our “blog writer” hardly seems enough. Rita had a gift. She could take an ordinary day at the rescue—a silly kitty moment, an adoption, a goodbye, or one of the countless little things that happen here—and turn it into a story that made you laugh, cry, and feel like you were right here with us.

She told our stories.

Through her words, she captured the heart of FFRC: the cats, the people, the love, the heartbreak, the laughter, and the hope. Those stories are now an incredible gift she left behind for all of us.

A year later, Rita is still missed. There are still moments when we wish we could tell her something, hear what she would have to say, or read one more story written in that special way only Rita could write.

But we are so very grateful that she was part of our lives and part of FFRC.

Rita, you may no longer be here to write our stories, but you will forever be part of ours.

We miss you, our friend. We remember you. And we always will.

Rescue isn’t just taking cats in. It’s medical care. It’s prevention. It’s cleaning. It’s laundry. It’s paperwork. It’s adoption. It’s community outreach. And yes… apparently it’s a LOT of mopping.

We’re incredibly proud of what our little FFRC team accomplishes every single day.

FFRC Blog Week Ending September 12, 2026

2026 Chatters Weekend was a great success! Thank you so much for the staff that worked countless hours to provide a wonderful venue for us to meet and greet! Also, thanks so much for the Chatters that came in early to help get everything set up: Beth-IL, Lynn-PA, Terri & Steve-NC, Ron-TN, Alley Cat-OH and Cindy-IN.

What a wonderful opportunity to catch up with old friends and to turn acquaintances into new friends. FFRC is truly the "Happiest Place on Earth."

Adoptions:

We started out Chatters Weekend with a double adoption on Friday, 9/11. Stephanie's son adopted PASCAL and KABUKI. These kitties didn't have to travel far to get home. They will stay in Defiance and will be the only pets. Pascal was found in the FFRC parking lot where he was dumped with Momma, ANGELIQUE, and his siblings. His date of birth is 4/23/26.

Kabuki, now named SALLY, was found in a cemetery with her sister, BABITA on 6/19/26. Her date of birth is 3/1/26.

Warm wishes to these two in their new furever home!

Intakes:

We are FULL!

We did not receive any intakes this week.

Health Updates:

On Friday, 9/11, Cheerio received a routine vaccine. She had an adverse reaction and starting panting heavily. She was quarantined and treated and is doing fine now.

All of our other kitties are doing great!

Holds:

WILLOW's adoption was delayed and will be September 14th.

SAZAZ will be going home very soon. She doesn't have to travel far. Our own Debbie will be taking in another big kitty for her very own. We are so happy for Debbie and Sazaz!!!!

Center Kitties:

VICTORIA loves living in NYOTA's Nest, but she still needs to keep in touch with the Main Room.

TIMBIT is showing off his FFRC Belly and getting in a good stretch, too.

LEMON is living the high life in Chicago. She is quite the princess and is sure that the show out her window was arranged just for her.

And last, but not least---a THOR and MALADE update:

Hi FFRC nation! An update on Malade & Thor. Both did well on the drive home (9.5 hours with stops). Thor slept in the corner of the carrier & didn't move the entire ride. Malade was restless to begin & meowed often but eventually settled in after using the litter. Occasionally we would hear little meows from her during the drive. Once we got home, we brought their carriers in & let Rosie (our rescue dog) & Zeke come up & sniff. Zeke sniffed & ran away. Pixell & Morris were sleeping somewhere in the house. Malade came out of the carrier & ventured down the hallway & into our small bedroom, which we had setup for them until they are comfortable being out all the time. Thor would not come out of the carrier so I brought him in the back & shut the door & then he came out. They both hid under the bed for a while. Malade came out first for pets & something to eat. Thor eventually came out as well for pets & food. Later in the evening we opened the door & they met Pixell & Morris & that went well. Rosie also went in & they did really well with her (I was surprised since they haven't had a lot of exposure to dogs). Zeke is being the most difficult! He is being very hissy. I have to admit, I was not expecting that. But I know that he will calm down in a few days. This morning, Malade has explored the entire house & is very brave! Thor is still hiding under the bed but has explored the other 2 bedrooms but hasn't come past those rooms yet. But that's okay, he will in time. Overall, I think everything is going really well. FFRC Chatters Weekend:

An early peek into FFRC Chatters Weekend was a Facebook Live Walk-Thru of the property on Friday. It was recorded and can be watched anytime. Check it out!

Day 1, we had folks from Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Mississippi, Tennessee and Arkansas! What a great turn-out.

Pizza lunch, with sandwich and salad leftovers from the day before, plus loads of delicious desserts. Wow our folks sure can bake!!!!!

Dinner was barbequed pulled chicken and pulled pork, macaroni and cheese, plus potato salad---AND even more desserts.

A spontaneous buggy ride and tour down to the backwater, plus a turn around at a local watering hole, was loads of fun!

Bingo games, lots of winners and at least one big loser table. That's the table that had all the big talkers that thought they were going to win. Jokes were on them!

The prize for the furthest travel went to Brenda and Burt from Mississippi.

We all went on a tour of the Cove and met some kitties that aren't seen on camera--also got to see the other farm animals, including the goats.

A big surprise for all was a visit from Dr. Darcy. She and a co-worker had participated earlier in a bicycle event near Findlay, OH. We were so happy to se her.

Also celebrated each September 1st is Ginger Cat Appreciation Day!

Ginger Cat Appreciation Day is a lighthearted holiday dedicated to celebrating the unique charm and personalities of ginger cats, also known as orange tabbies. The holiday was founded by software developer and animal rights activist Chris Roy, inspired by his own ginger cat, Doobert, who passed away at 17 years old in 2014 It has since become an annual event observed every September 1st, offering cat lovers a chance to honor both current and past feline companions.wikidates.org

Adoptions:

We had two adoptions on 8/3.

The first was our lovely DOLLY, now MOCHI! Mochi arrived at FFRC on 8/22/26, and we knew right away that she would not be here long! Mochi was familiar to us, because she had been through the Humane Ohio Spay/Neuter program. Unfortunately, her family was being displaced and could no longer care for her. Her date of birth is 5/1/25. This soft, sweet and delightful little lady has found her furever home with our friends Stephanie and Tony. We see them on camera quite often bringing IAMS food to us. Stephanie had a Siamese when she was young and has been searching for the perfect kitty to call her own again. Mochi will have some kitty friends at home + Betty, the Golden Retriever. Here is a picture of Mochi at home with Stephanie and Tony.

The second adoption was BUEHLER. This mischievous boy has found his new mommy and daddy! He will be the only kitty in the home and will be keeping his name. This little guy was found under Debbie's car after being dumped at FFRC. He was very flea-ridden, but healthy. Buehler's date of birth is 12/11/24. Although, we will miss his hijinks, like stealing Denise's sandwich and playing in the trashcan on Box Day, we are so happy he has found a home--which is very close by. Here he is "adjusting" the Kabana camera.

Friday brought us the adoption of LEMON. This was Megan's Mud baby. She was found under a shed after a terrible storm on 4/7/26. Her date of birth is 3/22/26, so she was just a baby. Megan placed her with WILLOW and they thrived together. She started as a gray tiger and ended up much blonder. Maybe a Touch of Sun or Sun In was used???? She is a beauty. 95% sure that Lemon will be keeping her name. Terri supplied a blanket, Thank You!

And Now

We also had a double adoption of THOR and MALADE on 9/5 and there wasn't a dry eye in the house or on camera. These kitties arrived at FFRC on 11/25/22--yes almost 4 years ago! They were found with their brother, ZEKE locked in a shed. Not sure how they got in. All three kitties were in pretty bad shape--severe upper respiratory issues, eyes and nose closed by "goop", dirty ears and fleas. Thor was the worst, he had open infected wounds, perhaps by rodent bites. Under FFRC's care, they all prospered. Zeke was adopted by Ann in 2023, and she came back for Thor and Malade, who will be keeping their names. What a wonderful reunion this will be. Will Zeke remember his siblings? Ann also has Pixel and Morris from FFRC and until their passing, Penn and Teller--also from FFRC. Thank you to Terri for supplying blankets and also Eric and Michelle. We will be watching for updates on all of the FFRC alumni.

We did not receive any intakes this week.

Health Updates:

We lost our sweet little TAYLA on 8/31. She wasn't feeling well so we started FIP treatment right away. She declined rapidly. That night we took her to Northeast Indiana Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Hospital (NEIVES) in Ft. Wayne. We left her in their care, but about 11:30pm she passed. She had been a sickly kitty from the beginning but found much comfort with SCHMOOKIE. We will miss her quiet little meows.

ZEEBA was sick on Sunday, 8/30. We found that she had ulcers in her mouth, called Calicivirus (FCV). She is being treated and is much better now. More about this condition is below.

Holds:

WILLOW's adoption was delayed and will be September 14th.

SAZAZ will be going home very soon. She doesn't have to travel far. Our own Debbie will be taking in another big kitty for her very own. We are so happy for Debbie and Sazaz!!!!

Rumpelstiltskin Update: 3 Weeks In!

We are officially three weeks into adopting our newest family member, Rumpelstiltskin (aka Rumpels), and he is slowly but surely settling into his new kingdom! As one can imagine having only ever lived at FFRC for the past 3.5 years, a new home and environment has been quite the adjustment!

Here is how his journey has been going:

Week 1: Total cave-dweller mode. Rumpels stuck to his safe zone in the bedroom, spending almost all of his time curled up in his little cat hut—which we have officially re-named his "turtle shell."

Week 2: The big sibling introduction! He started venturing out mostly at night for quick little peaks around the house before darting back to his cozy room. He also discovered he could observe all the action under the buffet of the kitchen. Ali had a lot to say about the new roommate at first (so. much. hissing. ), but things are cooling down significantly now! Big Brother Theo is glad to have someone else to team up against Ali in Hallway Racing.

Week 3: Progress! Rumpels is coming out way more during the day. We’re letting him go strictly on "Rumpels Time" so he feels completely safe and comfortable at his own pace. He is mostly nocturnal coming out to "play" around 8:45 on the dot. However, this morning he greeted us from his cat tree and demanded pets.

He is making so much progress! He is the BIGGEST lovebug! He is obsessed with pets and brushies, he is genuinely the drooliest boy in the world when he’s happy, and he has the absolute cutest, meekest little chirp-meow you've ever heard.

We love this sweet boy so much! We will keep working with him until he feels 100% at home

On this day 4 years ago (9/2/22), we adopted MURIEL and DEACON (LEXIE and NIKO) from FFRC. Such a happy memory, but we love them even more today.

Calicivirus disease, or feline calicivirus (FCV), is a highly contagious viral infection that primarily affects cats, causing respiratory issues and oral disease. It is particularly prevalent in environments with many cats, such as shelters and breeding facilities.

Feline calicivirus (FCV) is a common viral infection of domestic cats. The virus causes upper respiratory disease that often closely resembles Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis (FVR), and both viruses can cause the syndrome known as “Cat Flu”, with generalized inflammation of the upper respiratory tract and eyes, leading to sneezing, bilateral ocular discharge, a high temperature, dullness and inappetence.

While most cats do eventually recover, many recovered cats become chronic carriers of the virus, able to spread the virus to other cats. Up to 10% of household pet cats have been found to shed calicivirus.

Fatalities are rare, but do occur. Vaccines given to kittens, with booster vaccinations in later life as needed, ensure that FCV is usually effectively controlled in pet cats. Colonies of feral cats can suffer serious problems from the virus. There are nearly fifty strains of feline calicivirus, causing disease of variable virulence and severity.

September is Happy Cat Month

Happy Cat Month occurs annually throughout September (September 1–30) and was created by the CATalyst Council, a nonprofit organization focused on feline welfare Catster+2. Its purpose is to promote the health, well-being, and enrichment of domestic cats, countering misconceptions that cats require less care than dogs. The month emphasizes regular veterinary visits, proper nutrition, mental stimulation, and social interaction to ensure cats live long, healthy lives Catster+1

Other:

Edna (Gem) did some great research and found that the extra fee for the Ohio Spay and Neuter Specialty License Plate goes towards a fund that supplies grants to Ohio rescues. Edna took this to task and submitted the grant proposal. FFRC has received a $1,000 grant that can be used towards spay and neuters. Thank you so much Gem and the State of Ohio!!!

A few months ago, CHEWIE, a sweet female cat, was abandoned in a carrier at our fire station. Even though Friends Of Felines Rescue Center was already at capacity, they were willing to help make sure she received the care she needed.

While we’re thankful we were able to find help for Chewie, abandoning an animal at the fire station is not the right solution. Our first responders already give countless hours protecting our community, and our station is not staffed around the clock, meaning an animal left outside may go unnoticed for an extended period of time.

Friends of Felines does incredible work and is always in need of supplies, volunteers, and financial support.

 Chewie is now looking for her forever home! Learn more about adopting her.

Megan's other business has some major technical issues this week, but special thanks to Amy's Dad for fixing everything! We saved Amy, and Amy's dad saved Megan's business. Kindness is always a reciprocal process. Take the time to do one random act of kindness and see how it is returned!

On Megan's vacation day, she made it a family day bay taking Eric and GIZMO (Gizzy) to the beach. I'm not sure if Gizzy is enjoying the day off as much as Momma did.

Oh wait, yeah, this was fun!

Last weekend, we unexpectedly received another two kitties.

The first is a Siamese princess that came to us because a family was being displaced. She is about 1 1/4 years old with stunning sable speckled coloring and ice-colored eyes. We were aware of this kitties background through Humane Ohio. Because of this familiarity, she will be quickly considered adoptable. Normally, we name kitties through the Name a Cat Program; however, she was introduced to our Chatters on Tuesday after Box Day, the same day that we heard the sad news that Dolly Parton had passed. So, in honor of Ms. Parton, we have named this beauty, DOLLY. There was a quick poll of the Chatters and this was decided unanimously. I believe that Dolly Parton would think that this was a wonderful tribute.

The second kitty was brought in by Megan's brother. This kitty followed his friend home and even jumped in a pond to play with kids. He is a spotted tiger and is still a kitten. He has been named GARY. His name came from the Name A Cat Program and was provided by Cindy W. The results of the vote were:

The kitty that came in last week that was found at Goodwill and sent to us through Dr. Darcy's Office has been named MOOCHER. His name came from the Name A Cat Program and was provided by Polydactyl Momma. The results of the vote were:

A couple of weeks ago, we had two returns. Both kitties are in Dodger's Pen so they can get used to the Center. They both have tested fine.

KENYA (formerly KA-KENYA) is a black and white female with a DOB of 4/15/17. She had originally been adopted on 11/13/19. She arrived at FFRC on 10/31/19 and weighed only 5.1 lbs. at that time.

ROSIE (formerly GABEL) is black female with a slight white tail tip. Her DOB is 11/23/18. She was one of 6 black babies that had eye issue and were known as the "Abel" kitties.

Both kitties are doing pretty good and are very sweet and cuddly. They are not siblings or bonded; however, we would like to see them be adopted together. If you are looking for snuggly kitties, these are ready for you!

Health Updates:

Last weekend, we noticed that SMIDGEN was feeling under the weather. We performed a stomach tap and determined that she has FIP. Treatment was started on Monday afternoon. She is already showing signs of improvement and wants out of her isolation cage. She tells everyone, "Go tell Mamma Megan I'm alright and want to play with the other kitties!"

Last week, the tip of WYNN's tail fell off. This week, the tip of CALLAHAN's tail was hanging by a "thread". After a quick snip, he is doing great without it. Look at his cute face!!!

Holds:

Siblings, MALADE and THOR, are going to their furever home. Their new mom had previously adopted their brother ZEKE. There are also a few other kitties in the household. These two siblings will be adopted on Saturday, September 5th at 7am EST. They will have their last FFRC vet visit on 9/2 to be chipped and receive their rabies vaccine.

Why do we request Gerber baby food? Gerber has the consistency of a smooth yogurt. It is easier to coat pills with this brand, and the cats really like it. Other brands are waterier with small bits of meat. These don't coat well.

Kaitlin has decided to pursue other opportunities. We are once again searching for an early morning person. We are also looking to fill the outside cat and farmyard helper position.

On 8/17, we recognized Black Cat Appreciation Day. Black Cat Appreciation Day celebrates our mysterious, sleek, and often misunderstood feline friends every August 17. Adoptions:

"Hi, You Guys!" This is how the Gumby Show always started. Well, we have our very own GUMBY, and he was adopted on Saturday, August 22nd to Stephanie. She also has BUCKEYE, another kitty and two old dogs. Stephanie can often be seen working hard at FFRC. On 6/5/26, Gumby was found by Stephanie's husband. A bunch of kitties had been thrown from a car while it was on a bridge. Most of the kitties had some form of injuries and were taken to various rescues. Gumby came to us. He had an injured front leg, which was recently removed. UHHH, no one told Gumby that a three-legged cat shouldn't be climbing towers and trees at all -- let alone only a few weeks after surgery. We are so happy that he has gone to a great home. Gumby was born on 4/21/26. I'm sure we will be seeing pictures of him. His name has not yet been decided.

Intakes:

All of our pens are still FULL!  

We have a new baby that was found at Goodwill. He's an unusual brown color and is very playful. He did come in with a "friend". He has Coccidia, which is a parasite (more on this below), which means he will need to be quarantined during his treatment. We have not yet named this little cutie!

We had two returns this week. KA-KENYA is a black and white female with a DOB of 4/15/17. She had originally been adopted on 11/13/19. She arrived at FFRC on 10/31/19 and weighed only 5.1 lbs. at that time. GABEL is black female with a slight white tail tip. Her DOB is 11/23/18. She was one of 6 black babies that had eye issue and were known as the "Abel" kitties. She was adopted on 3/30/19 and renamed ROSIE. It is always regretful to see any returns, but it is especially sad when the cats are seniors and have lived in their own home for a very long period of time. The kitties are depressed and despondent when they are returned. We will be working with them and will provide photos and updates as we have them.

We have named the two kitties that Megan has been feeding. The smaller of the two that we had been calling Itty Bitty is now TIMBIT. His name came from the Name A Cat Program and was provided by SonJa. The results of the vote were:

Both are eating well; however, Feisty is struggling to poo. We are adding a little "helper" to her food so that we can help her clear the log jam. TImbit now weighs 6.9 oz. and Feisty weighs 12 oz.

Health Updates:

We lost a long-time resident of the Cove on Friday. FRANK had always been a little sniffly, but recently had been struggling to breathe. He went to see Dr. Darcy on Thursday. She discovered a mass in one of his nostrils that was blocking his airway. Because it was very large and deep, there was no way to remove it. Frank passed with his favorite person by his side. Frank was on our records as being about 8 years old. During her exam, Dr. Darcy felt that he was quite a bit older than that. Frank passed with his favorite person by his side. Please keep Cindy and the rest of FFRC in your thoughts during this difficult time.

After his visit to the vet, SHADOW, one of our barnie boys is doing OK. There was nothing unusual found. Cindy will be watching him closely--I mean Shadow will once again be watching Cindy closely!

We received the results of the necropsy of CATSBY this week. He did have FIP, but that and a combination of a neurological event (like a seizure) caused him to pass.

The tip of WYNN's tail fell off. When she goes for her spay, it will be determined if she will have to have surgery to repair the remaining tail.

On Monday, PHILOMENA's babies + ALIKI spent their first night in the Center. They are having a great time.

This opened up Paddy's Place for the babies that had been in Debbie's house.

Jeni, sweet-silly Jeni, always full of love and curiosity. Offering

those special moments in your lap as she nestles in your arms

while see dreams. She and Jude are peas in a pod, side by side

through it all. The bonding of the blind feline, their secrets, their

characteristics are like no other, their magic is a must have in life.

Wibbles.....always busy doing her thing, never missing a beat.

Her patience is beyond belief, especially at meal time while the

others are fed. Calm in the distance, never a sound or display

of discontent. She has come to know she is the one who gets

the focus, the gentle hand to hold her in place as she takes

every bite without interruption. And boy, can that girl eat,

more so than Jeni. lol

Razon, stoic Razon. Allowing herself a glimpse of her new life

with wisdom beyond her years. She truly is an old soul, a loving

one that has no measure. Closing down the evenings, Razon by

my side to the opening of my eyes from the tap of a soft paw,

alerting it's time to begin the 4am feeding as if all their lives

depended on it. She is realizing her new home is a safe fortress

built with bricks garnered from understanding and love. Not to

mention, an HD TV she likes to watch the FFRC stream on every

morning.

Jude, our mystical-majestic Jude, another soul that is evident

beyond its years. A soul that truly stole my heart from the first

time he made his debut in the hands of Megan, no bigger than

a minute. A soul that continues to steal my heart each and every

day. No words can express the kindness and patience he gives

his 3 sisters, 2 brothers and approach to life. We truly are the

lucky ones.

Loki, our little Loki man. Never shy about displaying his state of

malcontent over the extra mouths in the dry food bowl or an

extra body in one of HIS many beds throughout the house.

Beyond this, he chooses to ignore each and every one of the

other Sin City Six. If it was up to him, they’d all disappear,

leaving each morsel of food and every comfy place to rest for

HIS and only HIS pleasure.

Jax, our gentle Jax, continues his middle of the road manner

with it all. As long as he is supplied special treats, his own

queen size bed and the run of the entire upstairs; not a hiss

will be heard nor a tooth be shown and maybe, just maybe, he

will let Jeni every once in a while share his "off limits" domain.

A Little Something Extra, Coccidia.

This is lengthy, but good you might find it interesting.

What Is Coccidia in Cats?

Coccidia are single-celled (protozoan) parasites that nearly all cats are exposed to in their lifetime. The parasite travels into the intestinal lining cells of the cat, where it matures over about two weeks into oocysts, rupturing the cells and causing intestinal damage. These oocysts then pass through the intestines into the stool to finish their life cycle, become infective (sporulate), and spread into the environment. It takes no more than 16 hours for a passed oocyst to sporulate into an infective state. Once in that state, they can survive for up to year in temperate environments.

There are many species of coccidia that infect many different animals, but almost all these parasites are host-specific, meaning a cat cannot transmit an infection to a dog or human, they can only transmit it to other cats.

Symptoms of Coccidia in Cats

An infection with coccidia does not always mean an illness is present. Many cats will eliminate the parasite on their own while others may shed oocysts in their stool without ever showing symptoms (asymptomatic). When illness (coccidiosis) does occur, it is often in young kittens or older cats with poor immune systems.

As the life cycle of these parasites occurs in the intestines, signs of illness are related to the digestive system. Diarrhea is most common and may be associated with weight loss. Cats can become dehydrated (especially young kittens), and reluctant to engage in normal, playful behaviors. Only in rare cases will there be vomiting and loss of appetite. These symptoms may be aggravated by stressful environmental changes like adoption, weaning, or living in an animal shelter.

Causes of Coccidia in Cats

Most cats, particularly those who spend time outdoors, pick up this parasite from their environment, grooming it off their fur and feet.

Mice, rats, and other common prey species are known as transport hosts because they can carry certain life stages of coccidia, which then infect the cats who hunt them. Cats who share a litterbox with an infected cat risk picking up the parasite themselves, even if they do not hunt or go outside.

How Veterinarians Diagnose Coccidia in Cats

A veterinarian will take into consideration the cat’s history, symptoms, and use a microscope to determine if oocysts are present.

Coccidia is diagnosed through a stool sample. In this testing, fecal matter is mixed with a special solution that allows the oocysts to float to the surface, where they can be collected on a slide and examined under a microscope. Each species of coccidia has a unique oocyst appearance that can be identified.

Treatment of Coccidia in Cats

Coccidia is usually eliminated in cats with an oral antimicrobial medication. Sulfadimethoxine (Albon®) is the most commonly used product, though there are other medications that may be recommended.

Depending on the severity of the cat’s illness, antimicrobial treatment is often combined with medications to help alleviate symptoms, such as probiotics, low residue diets, anti-nausea medications, and fluid therapy.

Recovery and Prevention of Coccidia in Cats

Cats that are properly treated and supported typically make a full recovery from coccidiosis.

Daily removal of feces from the litterbox, routine cleaning of the environment, and treating all cats in contact with the infected cat are recommended to prevent the spread of disease.

Cats with outdoor access and cats who like to hunt should have fecal flotation tests completed annually to look for asymptomatic infections.

Coccidia in Cats FAQs

Can cats get rid of coccidia on their own?

Asymptomatic cats frequently eliminate coccidia infections on their own.

Cats with signs of illness may recover without intervention, but they will likely be in significant discomfort. It is not recommended that infected cats recover without medication as it will prolong illness and they are likely to spread the infection to other cats.

What happens if coccidia goes untreated?

Untreated clinical coccidiosis can lead to dehydration, weight loss, lack of appetite, and even death.

How long can coccidia live in carpet?

Certain life stages of coccidia can live for months in the environment, including carpeting.

How do you get rid of coccidia in your home?

It is important to clean litterboxes daily to prevent maturation of coccidia oocysts. Mature or sporulated oocysts are more resistant to most common disinfectants. Treating infected animals and keeping the environment clean are the most important steps.

Is coccidia contagious to other pets?

Coccidia is host-specific, meaning the specific species that infects cats can only infect cats. There is no risk to other kinds of household pets.

Is coccidia contagious to humans?

Humans are not susceptible to infection from feline coccidiosis.

Are there home remedies for coccidia in cats?

Coccidiosis should only be treated under the supervision of a veterinarian with FDA-approved medications.

On Box Day, we received many wonderful donations. Alley Cat and Tory had set up a Paws for the Cause donation site which brought in office and cleaning supplies, toys, food and snacks which were greatly appreciated.

Megan took a few much-needed days off on 8/19 & 8/20. Of course, she's still feeding the babies, which always come first.

Debbie is feeling a bit under the weather. Wishing her the best.

Well, Cindy's new helper, Rose, did not show up as expected. We are once again searching for some much needed help.

We had an extended power outage this week. Our back-up generator kicked in as expected, so the Center was fully functional. This prompted discussions on why the camera was out for so long. When there is a power outage, the generator automatically kicks in and covers all of our electric needs. However, the camera does not automatically come back on. The computer towers that regulate the camera have to be manually reset, and then our moderator, VRS, needs to do her magic to bring the cameras up. Many times, just like this one, the outages happen during off hours. There isn't anyone to reset the towers so the cameras will be down until this can happen. Please keep in mind, the Center is fully functional, it is just the cameras that are not available. Our staff and volunteers understand that these extended outages can be upsetting to those that are not able to view as expected. We are sorry for the interruptions, but we work diligently to return your service as soon as we can.

Of course, this didn't happen--we do have a back-up generator!

FFRC Blog Week Ending August 15, 2026

On 8/10, we thought about recognizing National Lazy Day, but decided it was just too much work!

On August 8th, we recognized International Cat Day. The day was established in 2002 by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) to raise awareness about cats, promote their welfare, and encourage responsible pet ownership. from Wikipedia

It is at FFRC!!!!

Adoptions:

We had a very special adoption (aren't they all?) on Friday, 8/14. Our homegrown RUMPELSTILTSKIN was adopted by Michelle and Eric Yacks--yeah Mrs. Yacks of 5th grade teacher fame! On 3/2/23, Rumpelstiltskin was born at FFRC to TIGRESS. He was one of 6 babies. The first 4 passed very quickly. Only he and his sister, MAGELLAN survived. They quickly became known as the Miracle Babies! Rumpelstiltskin has been a very healthy boy. The only mishap was when he fell from overhead and had to have the femoral head removed. He now walks just fine!

On adoption day, Rumpelstiltskin weighed in between15 and 16 pounds.  He has come a long way from the tiny baby shown above.  He will be keeping his name and will have two siblings, ALI (adopted from FFRC) and THEO. They will be known as the RAT pack (Rumpelstiltskin, Ali and Theo)! He had a bit of a ride (1 1/2 hours), but if there were licky sticks and lots of pets on the way, he was AOK!  Special thanks to Ruth for the blanket.

Don't worry about sister, Magellan.  They were not a bonded pair. As long as she has the wheel, she'll be just fine!

On Sunday, August 9th, we received a call from the sheriff's department. They had a caller on the line that had 5 little babies that were in poor shape. Megan arranged for the babies to be brought to FFRC. The babies were only a day or two old. One of the babies had already passed and three others were actively passing. That left one little tiger baby boy that weighed in at 3.3 oz. Megan is bottle feeding him and by Friday, he was up to 4.5 oz. Itty Bitty boy has not yet been named, and GUESS WHAT? Itty Bitty is starting to open his eyes.

And then, on Monday, August 10th, another little baby was brought in. She had been found by the road, all alone. She was 4-5 days old and is another baby tiger. She was a screamer, but when put with the Itty Bitty, she quickly quieted. They are now snuggle buddies. Bigger Itty Bitty has also not yet been named.

Both babies are nursing well and taking their full allotment. At this age, you can really see the difference in their size.

During Q & A, Megan showed us an adorable picture of our Chatter Friend Donna's dog, Lucy, watching the feeding of these babies.

We have named the kitty that came in last week from a rescue center that we work with. She is a tiger tabby with a lot of white, about 1 1/2 months old. She has the biggest eyes. She has tested fine. Her name was taken from the Name a Cat Program. The results of our votes:

Health Updates:

Sadly, we lost our baby CATSBY this week. Catsby had been being treated for FIP and was responding well; however, failed quickly overnight on Monday. Cindy took him to Dr. Darcy's office for a necropsy. We want to make sure that no other kitties have been exposed to something dangerous. Her momma PHILOMENA and her other babies + ALIKI are doing great and are now in the main center causing havoc. Catsby, you were greatly loved and will be missed.

On Monday, SHADOW, one of our barnie boys--and Cindy's shadow, will be going to Dr. Darcy's for a check-up. He has been panting in this hot weather.

We heard from Denise. her husband is doing great after his surgery.

We ordered a replacement pole for Rocket. He had demolished the old one. He is still getting used to the new pole.

We are wishing everyone the best that have been suffering through all of the recent storms and fires. Much of the Midwest was affected recently by a Derecho (not our boy) and remain without power after nearly a week. Other parts are flooded with major roads completely washed away. Fires consume other parts of the country. Keep all in your hearts during their difficult times.

FFRC Blog Week Ending August 8, 2026

On 8/1, we recognized the National Girlfriends Day, and it was followed closely on 8/2 with National Sisters Day.

For some of us, both days recognize the same person(s). Happy Happy to all of the Sisters and Best Friends out there.

If MARILYN isn't Momma to all of the kitties, then she is everyone's girlfriend. Here she is with DERECHO, acting as both Momma and girlfriend.

WIBBLES and RAISIN bonding as only sisters do. Just in time for National Sisters Day!

Adoptions:

On 8/4, we had a surprise adoption. It happened right before boxes were opened. CAZMIN has gone to her furever home. Cazmin arrived 4/18/26. She was one of the "Hoard" kitties. When she arrived, she was very skinny and had bad ear mites. She is about 1 year, 3 months old. She is the only kitty in the home at this time. Her new name is LUNA.

Also on 8/4, we had another adoption. This time it was SCHMOOKIE. It was a great day for Torties, although Schmookie does have white feet. Schmookie's date of birth is 8/6/23. This is her birthday week! She also arrived as part of the "Hoard" kitties on 4/18/26. She had a skin issue, which has since cleared up. She is going home to a few other kitties, which she will be able to mother. She will be keeping her name. Special thanks to ParkBomYu for the blanket.

On August 3rd, a construction worker that was digging holes for utility poles on Power Dam Rd. found a little guy (not sure yet if male or female). His crew was from Toledo, so he needed to find a home for this kitty. It is a dark tabby about 1 1/2 month's old. He is currently playing in Back Thumpers Room with CALLAHAN and JACKMAN. We used the Name A Cat Program to name this little one. Here is the information from the poll:

This week, we received a call from a rescue center that we work with. They specialized in FIV and Feline Leukemia positive kitties. They had a little baby that needed a home. This one looks a lot like WYNN. She is another tiger tabby with a lot of white, also 1 1/2 months old. She has the biggest eyes. She has not yet been tested or been named.

The new babies that arrived last week have been named:

Last Tuesday, 7/28, a new kitty was found on someone's porch. This 2-month-old boy is black with white paws and nose. He is extremely playful but currently has a bit of a wormy belly. He looks a lot like Sneakers, so we temporarily are calling him NOT SNEAKERS. We used the Name A Cat Program to name this little guy. Here is the information from the poll:

Also on Tuesday, a young lady brought in a kitty that she found rolling (literally) down the main street of Defiance, Clinton St. She stopped traffic and rescued this little boy and brought him to FFRC. This little guy is only about 1 pound and 1 month old. He appears to be pretty healthy. He is a dark tabby with very large paws. His first day, he was very spicy, so is being called HISSY SPITTY. After a day, he had settled down and is now very cuddly. He is staying with CALLAHAN. We used the Name A Cat Program to name this little guy. Here is the information from the poll:

Health Updates:

Sadly, we lost our Nyota's Nest resident, HAPPY, on Wednesday, August 5. We were very surprised because she showed no signs of being ill. She was close to 14 years old. We are glad that she did not have to suffer. We will miss her.

VICTORIA has been feeling a bit under the weather and has been losing weight. She is one of the lades that share Nyota's Nest, so we don't' see her on camera very often. We are watching her carefully.

GUMBY's leg removal surgery on 8/4 was a success. He was kept overnight and was back at FFRC on Wednesday, 8/5. He has already learned to balance on his rear legs and is doing great! He is in Front Thumpers Room but wants to be out! We are giving him more time to heal.

CATSBY has an issue and was taken to Dr. Darcy's this week. Tests were run and is currently being treated for Toxoplasmosis and FIP. Due to the length of time it takes to get tests back, he is being treated for both. We do believe it is FIP. He is now in isolation in Front Thumpers Room. After only one day, he is showing improvement.

LEMON has a bit of a runny eye, which is being treated.

Siblings, MALADE and THOR, are also going home. Their new mom had previously adopted their brother ZEKE. There are also a few other kitties in the household. The adoption should happen around Labor Day Weekend.

FFRC Blog Week Ending August 1, 2026

On 7/30, we recognized the International Day of Friendship. This day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly with the idea that friendship between peoples, countries, cultures and individuals can inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities. United Nations

As members of the FFRC Nation, this is something that we celebrate on a daily basis. Thank you all for being Friends!

Adoptions:

What started as a single adoption for DIGBY, ended up being double adoption! Digby arrived at FFRC on 1/14/26. He had been found outside a lady's home, ironically, she lives directly across the river from FFRC. He was very friendly, had no fleas and clean ears--no issues--just a cold kitty found outside. From day one, Digby has been very friendly. Digby was born on 4/1/25 and weighs in at approximately 13 pounds. He is solid and thick. His gray and white fur and chubby cheeks make him easy to identify. Digby went home to a current brother and will be keeping his name. His car ride was only about 45 minutes.

Going home with Digby is BLUE!!! When the new parents of Digby adopted him, they stated that they would most likely adopt another from FFRC. I think it even surprised them on how soon that second adoption would be--maybe 30 minutes. Blue is a beautiful gray kitty that loves to eat while laying down. He was found outside Megan's friend's apartment door on 12/15/25. A neighbor had put him outside in the cold. Megan's friend made a quick phone call and brought Blue to FFRC with Blue wrapped around her neck or riding in her lap all of the way. Blue's date of birth is 6/1/25, so he is exactly 2 months younger than Digby. He also will be keeping his name.

Also on Tuesday, a young lady brought in a kitty that she found rolling (literally) down our main street, Clinton. She stopped traffic and rescued this little boy and brought him to FFRC. This little guy is only about 1 pound and 1 month old. He appears to be pretty healthy. He is a dark tabby with very large paws. His first day, he was very spicy, so is being called HISSY SPITTY. After a day, he had settled down and is now very cuddly. He is staying with CALLAHAN. He also will be named soon.

These babies all tested negative for FIV and Feline Leukemia. The three (IVA, SNEAKERS and CALLAHAN) brought in last week also have tested negative.

Health Updates:

VICTORIA has been feeling a bit under the weather and has been losing weight. She is one of the lades that share Nyota's Nest, so we don't' see her on camera very often.

CALLAHAN is doing much better and enjoys his new "brother".

Holds:

SAZAZ will be going home very soon. She doesn't have to travel far. Our own Debbie will be taking in another big kitty for her very own. Debbie is still feeding babies: Nigel, Beazlee and Shine. She needs to get them ready to move to the main center. AND.... then I think that Debbie needs a little "no kitty" time before the big lady moves in. We are so happy for Debbie and Sazaz!!!!

Center Kitties:

IVA and SNEAKERS have become best friends and cuddle in their shared pen.

SPIKER celebrated his 10th birthday on 7/28. He had tons of treats and even got to take a "Spiker Promenade" outside. He really likes to see the birds.

During his outside time, he came nose to nose with ZAVATAR.

On July 29th, we had another couple of birthdays. LUCIE and TACO BELLE. Why didn't they get "outside time"? Lucie hates it!!!! And Taco Belle, had enough of it at an early age.

BUEHLER had an exciting week. On Tuesday's Box Day, he found the best place to play. Yep, that's right--he's in the bottom of the trash can!

His antics didn't stop there---he was on a roll. He also "found" Denise's sandwich and made off with it. When the sandwich was found, poor ERIC got blamed for the theft. With the help of the camera sleuths, the real culprit was found.

After his hard day's "work", BUEHLER deserved a much-needed rest, dreaming of what new and exciting things he could do next.

Adopted Kitties:

KALIFLOWER, now KALI, saying if I fits, I sits.

MISS JEWEL is now a fluffy lap cat.

OK, not an actual picture of our adopted cats, but a very cute sign of KATB and her many fur babies, some that came from FFRC.

This month...

We said "Goodbye" to:

Loren - the tiny baby we had taken in last month. We fought hard for him but it just wasn't meant to be. What little time he had was filled with warmth and love.

Stripe - One of our Barnies. He was 17-years-old. He had been with us a very long time, seen many cats and humans come and go. But most importantly, he lived exactly the life he wanted to, on his terms. The barn won't be the same without him. He is survived by his brother, Dude.

We said "Hello" to:

Rill, a return. He's very, very scared but we'll help him work through it as much as we can so he's ready for his Forever Family.

Guthrie, another returned. She's also very scared, but we're doing everything we can to make her feel at ease until she finds her true home.

Monte and Mabelline, two kitties from a court case where the owners were not able to keep them.They are very nervous but we're working with them so they can find a stable Forever Home.

Callahan, this little gray boy was brought in just a week ago. He's not in the best of shape but our team is working tirelessly to get him back to health. You can do it, little one!

Iva, she was brought in with some pretty bad parasites. She is being treated and will soon be ready for a home! 

Sneakers. This sneaky little tuxie boy was brought in by the sheriff's dept. because he was found laying in the road, screaming, seemingly unable to use his back legs. It was thought he must've been hit by a car. He was brought in so that we could help him pass easily. However, as soon as he was brought in he was fine! Someone give this kid an Oscar! He must've heard about FFRC somewhere and devised a brilliant plan to get here. Well then, welcome little buddy. We'll get you a home!

We said "Have a Great Life!" to:

Tippy! The humans who adopted his sister Miley (now Winnie) came back from him! He is keeping his name.

Zelda and Glinda. As stated in the last recap, these two came in and got adopted right away! We're so glad they didn't have to wait long!

Wibbles, Raisin, and Jenny! These 3 special girls made their way to Las Vegas, NV! They have already settled in great and are keeping all their names.

Peanut Butter (PB)! After having been returned last year he has found his true Forever Home! He and his new human hit it off immediately. PB needs a quiet home where he's the only cat and that's exactly what his new dad can give him. He is keeping his name.

Digby! Well, we're about to, anyway! Tune into the livestream at 3-3:30pm-ish TODAY to see him off to his new home and find out if he'll be keeping his name. What a perfect way to finish out the month!  Update:  AND Blue!

Events:

Our Humane Ohio event was on Tuesday, 7/28. 27 females and 22 males were sent, none were FFRC Kitties. Just this one day's event prevented approximately 147 litters and 588 kitties from being born this year.

On Box Day, we had a note from our friend Iain and Lynn in Scotland. Their pup OZZY celebrated his birthday this week and wanted to thank Megan and Lynnette for their work with FFRC.

Staffing:

Shalin has been on vacation and Stephanie and Olivia have been covering her shift. Unfortunately, Shalin has found a new position. Her last day with FFRC will be Monday, August 3rd. We hope that she will be willing to cover shifts, as needed.

Mr & Mrs. Yacks are staying in the Kitty Kastle.

Visitors from Cincinnati came in to see some of their favorite kitties.

Tony and Stephanie brought in another load of IAMs Dry. Thanks so much!

Others were in and out, as well.

An update to the Mr. Possum story:

He's doing great and glad for Cindy and FFRC for helping him.

Cindy rescued a very small possum on Saturday morning. He wasn't doing so good, so Megan contacted a wildlife rescue center. They were willing to take him. YEAH! Cindy got him in a cage and Eric, who isn't feeling the best, drove him about an hour for the intake. Thanks so much to Cindy and Eric for being the animal lovers that they are and giving the little guy a chance.

The last game of the 2026 World Cup has been played. What a spectacular event.

Adoptions:

On Saturday, July 25th, PEANUT BUTTER (PB) was adopted. PB was returned on 9/25/25 because the household was a bit too much for him. PB enjoys a much quieter routine which is why he has been in Back Thumpers Room since his return. PB's date of birth is 2/26/20 and is a very big boy! His new daddy met PB and they immediately fell for each other. Peanut Butter will be keeping his name and will only live about 10 minutes away where he will be the "One and Only" in the household.

Thank you for giving Peanut Butter a chance in his new furever home!

Last week, we adopted five kitties and then this week, we got three new ones.

Last Saturday, 7/18, one of our new helpers took in a new cat, without knowing that Megan and Lynnette are the only ones that can make the decision to intake a kitty (lesson learned). This new kitten is a gray boy with a big boop of white on his chest. He is about a month old and weighs only 2 lbs. This little guy has some health issues. When he arrived, he ate by himself, because he was so hungry. Now, we are syringe feeding him. He has a broken tail, and something is wrong with one of his legs. He also has an infection that is being treated. We are watching this little boy closely. We have named him CALLAHAN. His name came from the Name a Cat program and was submitted by Anna K. Here are the results of the voting:

The next kitty came in on Monday, 7/20. This one is a buff and white little girl who is about 2-3 month's old. Initially, we told the lady that brought her in that we were not able to keep her but would remove a tick that we saw on her. Lynnette was able to remove the tick and then found "another one". After further examination, this other one was not a tick but was a Cuterebra. (see below for more info on this fun guy). We were able to remove this one but decided to keep this kitty and make sure that all were removed and that she was healthy. We named her IVA. Her name came from the Name a Cat program and was submitted by Cindy W. Here are the results of the voting:

On Monday night, we received a call from the Sheriff's Department. They had found a cat that had been hit in the road, and his back legs were not working. Megan was sure that this was going to be a euthanasia. Butt when he arrived, he popped his little head out of the transport box and said, "Hi, I'm fine. Love me!

This little boy is black with snippets of white. He is about 2 months' old. We have named him SNEAKERS. His name came from the Name a Cat program and was submitted by SonJa. Here are the results of the voting:

Health Updates:

Our new arrivals from the court case are keeping the names that they had in their prior home. The brown boy is MONTE.

The gray and white female is MABELINE.

These two kitties are doing OK but are very sad and depressed.

GUMBY was scheduled to have a vet check on Thursday, but a Wednesday opening became available. After the check, Dr. Mercer determined that this little guy will be losing his leg. This is not the outcome that we wanted, but he will have a better quality of life after his surgery on 8/4.

What are Cuterebra or warbles?

Cuterebra is the scientific name of the North American rabbit or rodent botfly. Cuterebra larvae develop within the tissues of certain animal hosts and, during this phase of their life cycle, they are commonly referred to as “warbles”.

What is the Cuterebra (botfly) lifecycle?

The adult botfly deposits its eggs near or in the opening of rodent and rabbit burrows. After hatching, the botfly larvae enter the host's body through an opening such as the nose, mouth, or skin wound.

The botfly’s preferred hosts are typically rodents and rabbits. After several days, the botfly larvae migrate to the tissues beneath the skin, where they encyst (burrow in) and continue their development.

After about a month of living in the host’s skin, the larvae crawl out to pupate (develop into a pupa, or immobile cocoon-like stage) in loose soil, debris, or forest detritus. Adult Cuterebra flies mate within a few days of emerging, laying more eggs, and starting the cycle again.

How did my cat get warbles?

Cats are accidental hosts of Cuterebra larvae. They are usually infected when they are hunting rodents or rabbits and encounter the botfly larvae near the entrance to a rodent's burrow. Most cases of warbles in cats occur around the head and neck.

How do I know if my cat has warbles?

The early stages of Cuterebra infection or warbles are rarely visible on the outside of the skin. Most cases of warbles are detected when the larva enlarges and becomes a noticeable swelling seen or felt beneath the skin. A small “breathing hole” is often visible in the skin over the warble. The hole enlarges when the warble has fully matured and is about to leave the host.

Sometimes, nothing abnormal is noticed until after the larva leaves the host. Most cats develop a deep abscess or skin infection in the empty cyst after the warble has left the skin. In many cases, the secondary bacterial infection that develops in the empty cyst causes more damage than the primary attack by the Cuterebra warble.

Rarely, the Cuterebra larvae migrate away from the skin, causing inflammation and damage where they travel. Affected areas can include the eyes and surrounding tissues, the brain, nose, larynx, and trachea. They can even cause serious widespread disease, such as sudden inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC).

How is the condition treated?

Treatment depends on when the condition is discovered. If the condition is diagnosed before the warble leaves the skin, the warble will be removed and the injured tissues will be removed (debrided), sometimes surgically. Antibiotics are usually prescribed to combat any secondary bacterial infection. Surgery may be required to close the injured site in some cases. Anti-histamines or corticosteroids are also sometimes used to prevent an allergic reaction when the Cuterebra is removed.

If the condition is diagnosed after the warble has left the skin, your veterinarian will clean and debride the infected area and also prescribe antibiotics.

What is the prognosis for my cat?

When only a few warbles are involved, the prognosis is good for complete resolution, and few, if any, permanent side effects occur. The prognosis is worse if a cat is infected with multiple warbles or if a warble migrates through or develops near a nerve or other sensitive tissue or organ. Seizures have sometimes been caused by the presence of a Cuterebra in the nervous system.

How can I prevent my cat from getting warbles?

Cuterebra is a common fly in North America. The best way to prevent a cat from getting warbles is to keep them from hunting rodents. When this is impossible, and if you live in an area with numerous rodents, rabbits, or other small mammals, you should regularly inspect your cat for signs of warbles. The earlier a warble is removed, the less likely the chance of severe or permanent damage to your cat.

This month, we observe Lost Pet Prevention Month to raise awareness and promote actions that prevent pets from becoming lost.

Here are some steps that you can take to protect your pets from becoming lost:

Adoptions:

We had some very special adoptions this week---but aren't all adoptions special?

The first adoption was on 7/15 for two little kitties, ZELDA and GLINDA. Their mom is over the top with happiness to have these two girls. Zelda is a little black and white baby that arrived at FFRC on 6/19/26. Her date of birth is 5/8/26. She was found in a car's wheel well and was filthy upon her arrival. Glinda is an orange striped, medium to long hair little lady. She arrived on 6/23/26 and has a date of birth of 4/16/26. She was found just roaming around outside. Both kitties had been getting acquainted with each other in Dodger's Pen. Initially, they weren't too sure of each other but soon were loving on each other and playing.

Our next adoption has been in in the planning stages for quite a while. This was the adoption of WIBBLES, RAISIN and JENNY. Jenny is about 8 months' old. She arrived at FFRC on 10/19/25. She had been found outside someone's home. She had very bad eyes. One has been removed and she has limited sight in the other. She is the very beautiful black and white kitty pictured below. Wibbles and Raisin are inky sisters with Cerebellar hypoplasia (CH). They were born to a feral momma. Raisin is more moderate and has sleek black fur. Wibbles is more severe but has become more stable as she has gotten older. Her fur is fluffier and she has one white whisker. Their date of birth is 10/31/25. All kitties will be keeping their names.

On 7/16, Megan, Eric and a friend boarded a plane in Detroit and were Vegas bound. They caught the attention of many and made friends during their travels.

Travel and Touchdown were great. The girls were very well behaved, and their new momma was waiting to take them to their furever home.

Jenny was ready to join the Vegas showgirl community.

And the new brothers were ready to welcome them home. (Jude, Jax and Loki).

The girls are home but are tired from their travels.

As expected, we had a return on Monday, 7/13. Her FFRC name was GUTHRIE but was changed upon adoption to Willow. She was originally adopted on 5/7/18 after only being at FFRC for 8 days. She is now about 9 years old. 80% of orange tigers are male, but this one is a female!!!

Health Updates:

All of our kitties are doing great! Our new arrivals (returns and the two court case kitties are very sad and confused, but we are working with them. The great news is that all of these "new" kitties tested negative (this means that they do NOT have Feline Leukemia or FIV.

Holds:

SAZAZ will be going home very soon. She doesn't have to travel far. Our own Debbie will be taking in another big kitty for her very own. Debbie is still feeding babies: Nigel, Beazlee and Shine. She needs to get them ready to move to the main center. AND.... then I think that she needs a little "no kitty" time before the big lady moves in. We are so happy for Debbie and Sazaz!!!!

Center Kitties:

Here's Covie DUDE. We don't see the Covie's very much, but this one celebrated his 12th birthday on 7/12.

Adopted Kitties:

JACCI and HEINZ have adjusted well. Here are notes from their momma:

every cat is unique and special -- here are a couple things about jacci and heinz 
★jacci has only 1 white whisker and the rest are dark
★heinz has 1 strand of white hair between his eyes
★they love to move their food bowl into the middle of the walkway, every time we put it back they move it back out
★their favorite bed is actually an aquarium. it was on the floor because i got a new one and i was going to sell it on marketplace, but they sleep on it and claimed it as theirs, so now its permanently there
★they can open the bottom cabinets in the kitchen and hide in there
★heinz loves pizza so we have to make sure to keep it away from him , lol
★basically everything about jacci is unique since no 2 torties will have the same pattern, i especially love her one blonde-peach foot
★they are both extremely cuddly - I've never met a cat more cuddly than heinz in particular 
★ they both HATE being picked up
★heinz has grinch feet , aka extremely long toe hairs

Humane Ohio was on Tuesday, 7/14. We sent 29 females and 19 males. This included GLINDA, ZELDA, RUMER, RENLY, PASCAL, SMUDGES, CATSBY, ALIKI and RUSSELL. Wait, who is Russell? He is an outside boy that had been very difficult to catch; however, our wonderful Shalin was able to get him. He is a very big grey and white tiger and has chubby cheeks. He showed up with cauliflower ears (from mites) and covered in fleas. He tested fine! He also came with his "brother" BOB. They look quite a bit alike, but Bob is a brown and white tiger. We haven't been able to catch Bob yet. These two may also be brothers with Barnicle Farnsworth, III.

There was no Q & A on Friday, 7/17. Megan was in Las Vegas---She's back now!!

Yesterday, 7/10, was National Kitten Day and we've got plenty to adopt.

Why use a generic kitty model, when we have these little bundles? Here are just a few:

RENLY, ALIKI, CATSBY, SMUDGES, RUMER and PASCAL are enjoying the view from Paddy's Place. Now that's a real cuddle puddle!

Adoptions:

We only had one adoption this week, but it was a poignant one. On 7/5/26, our beautiful boy, TIPPY, went home to live with his sister, MILEY, now Winnie. They were both born on 3/15/25. On 2/15/26, our volunteers, Stacey and Kat, found Tippy and Miley at our local Bronson Park. They were both trapped with the intention of just having them neutered/spayed and then returned. They were thought to be feral, but when they arrived at FFRC, it was soon discovered that they were both very friendly. Miley was adopted back in May, leaving Tippy at FFRC. Her human parents were looking for a friend for her and realized that Tippy was still available. They quickly decided that he was the best one for them. Both kitties have an older brother named Davidson who is 7 years old. Tippy will be keeping his name--it's very appropriate because he does have his ear tipped, but also a white tip on his tail.

Intakes:

We had a return on Friday, 7/10. This 7-year-old sweet kitty was originally adopted on 2/25/19. His name is RILL. Rill is a big boy. He originally came in about 4 lbs. and was over 10 lbs. when he was adopted.

We have another return scheduled for Monday. Her FFRC name was GUTHRIE but was changed upon adoption to Willow. She was originally adopted on 5/7/18 after only being at FFRC for 8 days. She is now about 9 years old. 80% of orange tigers are male, but this one is a female!!! Picture to follow upon her arrival.

Returns are very sad. The cats are very confused and depressed, plus they are mature cats which makes them very hard to rehome. If you know someone that wants an older cat, please let us know.

We also received 2 cats from a court case. They are also mature kitties, around 5-6 years old. Their living conditions were not the best. The home is now condemned, and the humans no longer are available to care for them. The two kitties are siblings. The female is a grey and white and looks fine.

The male has some visible issues. He has some wounds and scabs and also a rodent ulcer on his lip (also known as an indolent ulcer or eosinophilic granuloma). This condition is not caused by rodents but is an allergic reaction and is most commonly on the lip. Common causes of the reaction are flea, mosquito or mite bites and environmental allergens. It is not contagious. This boy is a very dark brown.

None of the new arrivals have yet been tested.

Health Updates:

SCHMMOKIE's skin condition is looking much better.

GUMBY almost weighs enough for Dr. Darcy to evaluate his leg.

All other kitties are doing good with just a few little kitty colds.

Holds:

It's really happening RAISIN, WIBBLES and JENNY are becoming Vegas Babies! Megan, Eric and friend will fly the babies to Las Vegas on 7/16. They will be back the evening of 7/17. VIVA LAS VEGAS!!!

ZELDA and GLINDA are on hold. They will be adopted on 7/15 at 10am.

SAZAZ will be going home very soon. He doesn't have to travel far. Our own Debbie will be taking in another big boy for her very own. Debbie is still feeding babies: Nigel, Beazlee and Shine. She needs to get them ready to move to the main center. AND.... then I think that she needs a little "no kitty" time before the big guy moves in. We are so happy for Debbie and Sazaz!!!!

Did you ever wonder how Derecho got his name? He arrived during a Derecho!!

Have You Ever Heard of Derecho Alley? 

We’re in it here in Ohio, and we’re entering the climatological peak of the season.

Most people have heard of Tornado Alley, but a lesser-known corridor known as “Derecho Alley” stretches from the Plains through the Midwest and Ohio Valley. This is where the ingredients often come together for long-lived thunderstorm complexes capable of producing widespread wind damage over hundreds of miles.

June and July are typically the busiest months for derechos. In fact, some of Ohio’s most memorable wind storms — including the June 2012 derecho that left millions without power across the Midwest — occurred during the heart of summer.

Unlike tornadoes, derechos can impact entire regions at once with wind gusts of 60-100+ mph, knocking down trees, damaging buildings, and causing widespread power outages.

These storms start from a single thunderstorm and expand into the intense squall line as they move east. Fingers crossed we can avoid one this year.

Lynnette will be back from her vacation on Monday, 7/13. We missed her!

Humane Ohio is on Tuesday, 7/14. Zelda and Glinda will be going for their spay so that they are ready to be adopted on 7/15.

We have been interviewing and have hired two part-time positions:

Chelsea started on 7/10 and will be the early morning Friday team member. Chelsea is used to working with cats and has 10 of her own. Kim is currently training her. In August, Kim will be moving to a 4-day week.

Stephanie (Buckeye's mom and former volunteer) will work the Friday night 5-10 shift and will fill-in on other shifts, as needed. We had a surprise visit from Buckeye on Friday. He is now trained to walk on a leash!!! Good Job, Bucky!

We have nearly all shifts filled but always need volunteers!!!

Our kitty volunteers also volunteer in other ways:

Edna (Gem) and Mary Braids doing their duty! Edna hit her 2-gallon mark! That's 16 times of donating blood! Each donation can save up to 3 lives.

A note from Megan:

How neat is this? For the past two weeks, our channel has been watched by NEP, the tv broadcasting crew handling Wimbledon! Isn't that just the neatest thing?? They were kind enough to reach out and share a pic!

LEMON was adopted on 6/26 and returned on 6/28. This was through no fault of little Miss Lemon. Her mom experienced a health issue that prevented her from being able to care for the transition of a newly re-homed kitten. Welcome Back, Little One.

Health Updates:

Sadly, on Sunday, 6/28, we lost our long-time resident barnie, STRIPE, after a short illness. Stripe had been scheduled for health checkup with Dr. Darcy on Monday. Stripe would have been 18 on August 9th. Earlier this year, he lost his sister, SNOOPY. His remaining brother, DUDE, still resides in the barn and appears in good health. Our hearts are heavy, but we had many years with our buddy, Stripe. We will miss you.

Unfortunately, the remaining kitten that Edna rescued as a one-two day old infant passed on 7/1. Megan had been caring for this kitty that we had named LOREN. He would eat pretty good and then would have to struggle to get him to eat. He was just so darn young and must have wanted to be with his brother and momma cat. He was warm and loved before his passing.

All other kitties are doing good with just a few little kitty colds.

Holds:

This is a very special hold: RAISIN, WIBBLES and JENNY will become Vegas Babies! That's right, JUDE'S mommy is looking for some more friends for him. The current plan is for Megan, Eric and friend to fly the babies to Las Vegas on 7/16. Megan will be back the evening on 7/17. VIVA LAS VEGAS!!!

ZELDA and GLINDA are on hold and will be going home as soon as they are spayed.

Wrapping up CAT-A-THON 2026

We wrapped up the 2026 Cat-a-Thon with our final Boom Pies and Chickie Party on Monday, 6/29.

Megan was to Boom Pie Lynnette, but Lynnette grabbed Megan's arm and the Megan got it.

Lynnette then Boom Pied Cindy.

Cindy gave Sheryl a double dose of pie.

Sheryl got Mary on a Boom Pie spin move.

Mary faked out Cindy and got Denise--sorry no picture of that.

Megan got Debbie---that's what you get for being late to a Boom Pie Party.

Denise got Lynnette.

Debbie got Debbie--she says she took one for the team.

The latest total for the Cat-a-Thon is $106,309!

Monthly Update from Megan:

This month...

We said "Goodbye" to:

Our wonderful Covie, Fluffs. He had no injuries or signs of illness. It was simply his time. He was much loved and will now be greatly missed. We're so grateful for the time we had with him.

We said "Hello!" to:

Lando, a boy that was brought in very malnourished and with the worst infected eye Director Megan had ever seen. He has since had it removed and is on the road to recovery! (Not pictured)

Beazlee, Nigel, and Shine. A trio of siblings who came in with some pretty goopy eyes. They are working on getting better so that we can find them homes!

Gumby, a little boy who came in with a broken arm. We'll get him all fixed up and ready for his family to come find him!

Babita and Kabuki, this pair of sisters were found in the middle of the road by a couple of our volunteers on their way home from their shift. They seem to be in good health and should soon be ready for their Forever Home!

Zelda/Nyx, a little girl who was dropped off at the Rescue during Cat-A-Thon. She was very dirty and had some parasites but now she's all cleaned up and heading for her new home soon as it took about 5 days for her human to find her. Some kitties are with us for years, some just a little while! 

Glinda, an orange fluffy female found in someone's yard. She is already on hold and is going home with Zelda/Nyx! In and out! We love to see it! (Not pictured)

Loren, a very tiny baby who was brought in with his sister after their mama was hit by a car. His sister sadly passed but he's okay so far. Rest assured our team is doing everything possible to ensure his survival. He is warm, well fed, and well loved. (Not pictured)

We said "Have a Great Life!" to:

Miss Jewel! Our fun loving fluff is now where she belongs! She has settled in very well and is keeping her name.

Oz! We had some visitors from WI who after going back home decided they just couldn't live without this guy so they came back and now he is theirs. He is keeping his name.

Kaylee! We knew it wouldn't take long for this shockingly beautiful lady to find her Forever Home! She is also keeping her name.

We had a few "breakages" this week. The washer went out and was replaced late on Friday afternoon. You can only imagine the amount of laundry there was--waiting.

Somehow, mysteriously, Megan's office monitor was broken. HMMMM, I'm sure it was just an accident--or maybe all of the late-night e-mails that the kitties were responding to.

Lynnette will be on vacation the week of 7/6. Here's to a relaxing and stress-free week.

Weekend worker, Alissa, has left FFRC to pursue other opportunities. Megan and Debbie are helping fill in until a replacement can be found. Interviews started on Friday.

All shelters in our area are full. Thursday, we received requests to home about 125 cats. One caller had 30ish cats. People are getting frustrated and increasingly angry when we cannot help them. Please remember when dealing with folks, it takes only a small effort to be kind and considerate.

Cat-a-thon is about so much more than raising money. It’s about bringing together an amazing community of people who believe that every cat deserves love, safety, and a chance at a better life. Year after year, you remind us that we are not doing this work alone.

Running a rescue isn’t always easy. There are long days, heartbreaking cases, unexpected emergencies, and difficult decisions. But during Cat-a-thon, we are reminded why we keep going. We see people from all over come together with one shared goal: helping cats who cannot help themselves.

Every dollar you gave will help provide nutritious food, lifesaving medical care, medications, clean bedding, enrichment, and countless other necessities for the cats who call FFRC home. Your generosity also gives us the ability to say “yes” to cats who have nowhere else to turn.

We also want to thank everyone who helped make Cat-a-thon happen behind the scenes. Adoptions:

We had three adoptions this week. We also have many approved adopters waiting to pick out their new kitties. YEAH!!

The first adoption was on 6/22, and it was OZ!!! Oz arrived at FFRC on 3/12/25. He was found with his sister, CLOVE (previously adopted) near the reservoir by Kathy. They were in a cat carrier with the door open. He was already neutered. Oz is a 3-year-old Inky with big green eyes and the sweetest personality. He is so sweet that our visitors Pam and Jessica left from the Cat-a-Thon and returned to Wisconsin, only to turn around and come back to get him. Oz will be keeping his name but already has the nickname of Ozzie Bear. Oz will have two brothers, Simon who is 12 and Toby who is 8.

The next adoption was on 6/25, and this time it was the beautiful KAYLEE.  She will be keeping her name with a nickname of Kay-Kay.  She has Siamese coloring, long hair and big, beautiful eyes.  Her date of birth is 8/19/20.  She was originally adopted as an infant and was returned due to a change in family circumstances on 2/24/26.   She was not often seen on the camera because she liked to be in a quiet cage in the Kabana.  She likes chicken, snacks and Little Soups.  She only had a 10-minute drive and is fitting right in.  Special Thanks to Terri who supplied a blankie for her. 

The third adoption was 6/26.  This time it was LEMON.  This cute baby was adopted and will live with her new friend JELLY (adopted from FFRC), now OLIVE.  On 4/7/26, Lemon was found under a shed after a Defiance storm.  Lemon was covered in mud.  She was just a baby and was hand-fed by Mama Megan with her "sister", WILLOW.  She is a long-hair brown tiger with flicks of orange in her fur.  She is quite the bundle of energy and love playing with Olive.  She had just a little ride to an area near Ft. Wayne.

Sherri and Brandon found two kittens on their way home from volunteering on Sunday, 6/14. These two are a bonded pair. One is a brown tiger and the other is a grey tiger. They are about 2 1/2 months old. They were very clean. We held a poll and names were selected from the Name a Cat Program.

Grey Tiger:

Kabuki 63%

Larlene 21%

Moocher 16%

After 136 votes, KABUKI is the grey tiger. Thanks to Patrick R for the name.

Brown Tiger

Babita 36%

Hiccup 33%

Felorah 31%

After 136 votes, BABITA is the brown tiger. Thanks to Ros for the name.

On Thursday, 6/18, a lady dropped off a kitty that had been found in her driveway. She is a black and white medium hair kitten that is about 1 1/2 months old. Her eyes are an unusual slate grey/green but were a bit goopy. She was very muddy and had a tick on her. Lynnette was able to squish the tick, which Megan found disgusting. The kitty is doing fine now! We didn't name her because as soon as she was shown on camera, an approved adopter "claimed" her as her own. Her name will be ZELDA (or maybe NYX) and as soon as she is spayed, she will be going home with another kitty that just came in.

During Q & A on 6/26, Megan showed a new orange baby girl to the camera. This baby was found in a gentleman's yard on 6/23. She has medium to long hair with stripes. She was covered in burrs. After a good brushing, the burrs were removed. She is about 2 1/2 month's old and very healthy. While doing her initial blood draw, she was purring and making biscuits. Before we could set up the naming poll, the same pre-approved adopter that is taking ZELDA, chose this baby too. She will be called GLINDA, after the Good Witch in the Wizard of Oz. Both Zelda and Glinda need their spay, which will be in a couple of weeks.

Edna saw a notice of a couple of newborn kittens that were found after their mother had been hit by a car. When the kittens were found, they still had their umbilical cords attached. We are guessing they were only a day old. She volunteered to foster them until they are ready for adoption. One of the kittens was not eating, so Megan brought both of them home with her. Sadly, one kitty did pass on Thursday evening. Megan is caring for the remining kitty for a few more days and will return her to Edna at that time. The baby is so young, it is difficult to determine if it's a boy or girl. It is a brown and white tiger.

Health Updates:

LANDO and JENNY had their eye sutures removed on 6/25. Jenny is in the main room and doing great.

Lando is still in Back Thumper's Room. He is just a bit shy but also doing great.

CHICA went for a dental visit on 6/25. She had all of her teeth removed on one side. She was a bit woozy when she returned, but by Friday morning, she was on the floor eating dry food. She is still on pain meds but is doing great and she still sticks out her tongue.

The hoarding kitties have all gained weight:

Mimble came in at 6.6 lbs. and is now 7.4.

Cazmin came in at 7.5 lbs. and is now 8.1.

Chica came in at 8.9 lbs. and is now 9.7

SKYE once again lost her soy sauce toy, but luckily Mama Megan had one for her. Then she hid that one too.

LUDWIG's adoption has fallen through. The family is not ready to adopt at this time.

Philomena and her babies + Aliki moved from June's Room to Paddy's Place this week. The babies that had been in Paddy's place are on the main room floor now.

There is a very special hold in the making. RAISIN and WIBBLES will become Vegas Babies! That's right, JUDE'S mommy is looking for some more friends for him. The tentative plan is for Megan and Eric to fly the babies to Las Vegas on 7/16. AND....SURPRISE! JENNY is also being adopted with these two girls.

Wrapping up CAT-A-THON 2026

We still owe 8 Boom Pies and a Chickie Party. The Boom Pies and Chickie Party are scheduled for Monday at 1ish. We also owe videos of Sazaz and Rocket. We will try to get this taken care of next week. All prizes have been shipped. There are only a few people that have not paid their donations. Please send these in, so that we can close out our books on this year's Cat-a-Thon.

On Box Day, the Center received a 2026 Cat-a-Thon Trophy, but it really belongs to all of you.

Wasn't it a surprise to see Kim working on Saturday afternoon? We all thought that we lost part of our weekend. Popsicle and Dagda were thrilled to see her. Lots of blankie and car rides---woohoo!

Lynnette will be on vacation the week of 7/6.

Humane Ohio was on Tuesday, 6/23. We sent up a total of 29 males and 19 females including FFRC kitties, Philomena, Babita and Kabuki.

A couple of us attended the Fountain City Veterinary Hospital 50th Anniversary Celebration on Friday, June 26th. This is where Dr. Darcy Adams practices. They had a band, food trucks and door prizes. In addition, they had a Kissing Booth, where you could kiss their office kitty, Watson. 😽😽

FFRC is always looking for Center volunteers. Candidates need to be at least 18 years old and have transportation to get here. Volunteers work set shifts and have assigned tasks, which include cleaning, feeding and other caring for cats. Please contact Megan if you would like to help.

Please make sure that you have a plan for your pets in the event that you are no longer able to take care of them. The best plan is to have both a primary and a secondary backup.

FFRC Blog Week Ending June 13,

The Countdown has begun. We start the CAT-A-THON on Monday; phones open at 10 am.

June 15th thru 19th 10 AM to 4 PM

Again, this year, our fundraiser will be an Adopt-an-Envelope event. How this works:

There will be 400 envelopes numbered 1 to 400. The envelope you choose to ‘adopt’ is the amount you contribute to the fundraiser (i.e., you pick envelope 298=your donation is $298).

FIRST: To pick an envelope, you must call 419-393-2400 between 10 AM and 4 PM beginning on the 15th. Please do not email or request numbers in chat–this is to prevent people from choosing duplicate numbers.

THEN: Once your choice is confirmed on the phone, you can send in your donation by PayPal, Venmo, or check.

There will be many events during the week for your enjoyment, so tune in often! On June 19th, there will be a wrap-up event at 10 AM to announce the final amount raised and the drawing of prize envelopes.

Each envelope contains a ticket for a drawing! We have 20 baskets to award – 1 basket to every group of 20 tickets. (Baskets are listed below.) Should all envelopes get adopted, we will have raised over $80,000.

Here are the expenses we would like to cover:

Pre-pay vet bills
Refill medical supplies
Random upkeep including painting and staining
Insulate the sheds and make them more comfortable for the outdoor kitties
Kitty Kastle air conditioning
Sink Repair
Any amount received beyond these will go toward continued operating expenses

This week, on June 12th, we helped MISS JEWELL find her furever home. This long-haired beauty was dumped in our parking lot on 7/30/25. She was found in a carrier at about 4am. Her date of birth is 3/4/25, so she was not very old. Miss Jewel is very shy and sweet, so a nice quiet home was very important for her. She will be going home to a little friend that is only a couple of months older than her. Miss Jewel will be keeping her name, and her travel time was only about a half hour. Special Thanks to Michael C. He provided a blanket and some toys for her very own.

Her new kitty mom posted this picture of her during her first day at her new home. She is looking very happy and majestic.

You can list a specific kitty on the application or just come and let a kitty pick you! Once you're approved you will be able to come and adopt anyone who is not a Resident or currently on hold.

It is kitten season, and this one is really hitting us!!!

We took in four new babies this last week. Debbie's house is now full of the kitties!

We received word that some kittens had been tossed from a car near a bridge. We have one kitty, thanks to our volunteer Stephanie's husband who found one of the babies and brought him to us. (Just a reminder, they are Buckeye's parents). Other rescues took in the remaining live kittens. This black tiger kitty has a broken leg, which will most likely need to be amputated, but he is in the best spirits.

We named this sweet boy on Monday. The names are from the Name a Cat Program. The choices were:

Three other kittens were found together. All have eye issues, which we are treating. The kittens are about 3 weeks old. Initially, these babies lost a little weight but are now taking bottles on their own and have gained weight.

The first is a female that is mostly white but has a black eye patch.

Health Updates:

Sadly, we lost our Covie, FLUFFS on June 8th. This was quite a surprise. She showed no symptoms and was under no stress or injuries.

All of our other kitties are doing pretty great, but we did have a number of vet appointments this week.

CHICA was going to go to Dr. Darcy's for a dental, but we substituted PRALINE (Gem's foster kitty). Unfortunately, when Praline arrived, her thyroid was a bit out of whack, so she could not have the surgery. Chica will now be going on 6/25.

Because Praline could not have her dental, we were able to help SCHMOOKIE, who was at the vets for a biopsy of her skin issue. Her teeth were also in bad shape. We were a little concerned about how soon she would recover from her dental, because she had a bit of bleeding, but on Tuesday, she was seen in the Kabana trying to catch a squirrel on the kitty TV. She's doing fine!

LANDO had his bad eye removed on 6/11. Dr. Darcy was even able to stitch the socket closed. Lando is feeling much better and also received his neuter while he was at the vet. Lando has gained weight, he is up to 6 lbs. 2 oz. Lando had been at Megan's but returned to the Center early in the week. He was lonely and bored.

JENNY had her right eye removed this week, too. On her left side (the "good" eye) eyelids were curled and pressing into her eye. This is a condition called entropion. Her eye is no longer irritated and she has limited vision. She feels much better. Jenny and Lando are in pens and are loving the pain meds--they are in La La Land.

In addition to having the FFRC, there is also a farmyard for people to enjoy! We currently have many goats, peacocks, geese, and ducks. And... yes, even more CATS! These cats are well cared for and have good shelter/heated areas for wintertime.
These kitties aren't really suited for indoor life, and not all of them are big fans of people, so although we'd love to have them inside, they're much happier outside. They never wander from the property and why would they? FFRC is as much a luxury feline resort outdoors as it is indoors!

Merlin is the last of a group called the "Firecats".

Shadow is named due his tendency to follow our Cindy all around the farmyard, her shadow!
There is no Barnacle Farnsworth I or II. Just III. Yes, that's really his name. He's our newest guy having arrived just a few months ago!

And here's our "siblings", JACCI and HEINZ. Jacci now loves to be petted and likes to play. Heinz is the big brother that loves to "play" with his sister.

A Chatter let us know that there are numbers missing from the board. Instead of rushing to get a new board, we are just going to add the numbers to the correct row. OOPS, Sorry, Math/Science is not our strong point.

To help make sure that you can get through on the phones, a roll-over phone line has been installed. Special help will be provided for our international callers.

Yet, late on Saturday, May 30th, we received a kitty at about 9:30 pm. This cat was in need of immediate medical care. The kitty was found in a good Samaritan's yard, who thought the kitty had already passed. Because we are so full, we gave the finder two options: euthanasia or take the cat back home. Two sad choices. The finder could not keep the cat, the remaining choice--not good. We tested him and found that he was negative to Feline Leukemia and FIV. We cleaned him up a bit, just to see if we could save him. Well, Megan decided that even though the Center is full, she would take him home with her to foster. He was crawling with fleas, severely underweight and the most dehydrated cat Megan had ever seen. He also has a very bad eye, which will need to be removed. We will have to wait until his overall health improves before he can have that surgery. This baby is about 8 months old, but at intake only weighed about 4 lbs. 2 oz. He is a buffy orangie. Megan worked on hydrating him and he slept most of the day on Sunday. He is doing better now, is eating (with his whole face in the food dish) and is much more hydrated. He finally had his first bowel movement on Tuesday. He loves attention and can be quite vocal if his food is not presented to him as quickly as he would like, just ask SonJa! He will be coming back to the Center soon.

We named this sweet boy on Tuesday. The names are from the Name a Cat Program. The choices were:

CHICA will be going to Dr. Darcy's office on June 11th for a dental checkup.

BOWIE and ZOOKY will also be going for a dental on June 18th.

ALIKI is doing great and has earned the nickname of Sassy Pants! She is quite the Jumping Bean!

MURPH has stomatitis. This is sores or ulcers in the mouth. In most cases a full dental will take care of the issue; however, with Murph, he still has the sores. He is treated with an antibiotic every three months, but like with humans, the effectiveness of the antibiotic will lessen over time. You may see him pawing at his mouth when he is in discomfort. Murph is about 6 years old and is a gentle giant.

The cats that live in the backyard are mostly “friendly strays,” having been “dumped” on the Rescue Center property or simply having found their own way here. Like all cats that live on the grounds, they are fully vaccinated, tested for FIV/FeLV, and spayed/neutered. They have 24/7 access to the sun porch via a small pet door where they have food, water, and cat furniture to lounge on. In the winter they have heated beds and mats available on the sun porch as well. They also have Porchie Haven which is a wonderful small building with heated lamps and lots of cushies. In the nice weather, we can open the windows! They are very friendly and can be found waiting for our many visitors who come to the rescue center. They love to be petted and have  their chins scratched. Try as we might, they refuse to become “indoor only” cats due to spraying and just general unhappiness at being confined, so as with the residents of Cats’ Cove and The House that Jonah Built, we do what we can to keep them healthy AND happy. They are known as The Porchies.

Ann visited FFRC this last week and helped A LOT with the preparations for Cat-A-Thon! On Friday, June 5th, she showed photos of her baby, ZEKE. He is a beauty and looks pretty comfy!

CAT-A-THON

June 15th thru 19th 10 AM to 4 PM

Again this year, our fundraiser will be an Adopt-an-Envelope event. How this works:

There will be 400 envelopes numbered 1 to 400. The envelope you choose to ‘adopt’ is the amount you contribute to the fundraiser (i.e., you pick envelope 298=your donation is $298).

FIRST: To pick an envelope, you must call 419-393-2400 between 10 AM and 4 PM beginning on the 15th. Please do not email or request numbers in chat–this is to prevent people from choosing duplicate numbers.

THEN: Once your choice is confirmed on the phone, you can send in your donation by PayPal, Venmo, or check.

There will be many events during the week for your enjoyment, so tune in often! On June 19th, there will be a wrap-up event at 10 AM to announce the final amount raised and the drawing of prize envelopes.

Each envelope contains a ticket for a drawing! We have 20 baskets to award – 1 basket to every group of 20 tickets. (Baskets are lised below.) Should all envelopes get adopted, we will have raised over $80,000.

Here are the expenses we would like to cover:

refill medical supplies
random upkeep including painting and staining
insulate the sheds and make them more comfortable for the outdoor kitties
Any amount received beyone these will go toward continued operating expenes

FFRC Blog Week Ending May 30, 2026

It's the unofficial start of Summer!!!! Pools are open; many kids are out of school and the weather is warm! Oh yeah, and it's Kitten Season. We all love to watch the babies play but is important to Spay and Neuter your kitties. An unspayed female can have between 2-5 litters per year. The average size of a litter is 3-6 kittens. Do the math/science---these means 6-21 kittens per year. This is on the low side. Many estimate the number is closer to 20-40 kittens during peak fertile years. This doesn't count the kittens having kittens or the fact that a single tom spreads his love with multiple females. FFRC is happy to partner with Humane Ohio to offer low cost spay/neuters. This week we sent 29 females and 19 males for their spay/neuters. Humane Ohio is hosting a 20th Birthday Bash on June 20th and is proud to have spay/neutered over 250,000 dogs and cats since they opened their doors.

On Tuesday, May 26th, a local fire department contacted FFRC. They had a cat that was dumped at their department. The kitty was found in a ditch in a clear backpack. No food, no water and very hot conditions. The cat had been in this carrier for over 24 hours before she was found by a passerby and her dog. Kitty is shell-shocked from being in this deplorable situation. She ate for the first time on Friday, but she is still very scared. She is very shy and we will need to earn her trust. We named her CHEWIE, a name from the Name a Cat Program that was submitted by SonJa. Chewie is a domestic medium hair inky with silver highlights and big beautiful green eyes. She is approximately a year old.

We also had a baby kitty dropped off at about 9:30pm on Wednesday 5/27. This kitty was found in a gentleman's yard. She has bad eyes due to a common issue caused by the herpes virus. One eye will need to be removed. She is only 4-5 weeks old. She is also an inky but has white on her chest and her bikini area. She loves her purry momma! We have named her ALIKI, a name from the Name a Cat Program that was submitted by Patrick R.

And if two new kitties weren't enough, we also had a return. ROCHESTER was returned on 5/28. He was adopted as a little kitten about 11 years ago. He is also an inky with white paws and bits on his face--almost a tuxie. He has a severe cauliflower ear, that we will help with repeated cleaning by our famous Lynnette. Other than his ear, he is a healthy chunky boy! Returns make us very sad. Cats are very traumatized by changes in their environments. Please have a plan for your kitties if you can no longer provide a healthy home for them.

Cats’ Cove and The House that Jonah Built are home to a group of permanent resident cats. These cats are known as The Covies. These cats are large adults that are mostly unadoptable due to behavior problems such as unreliable litter box usages and demanding outside time. FFRC strives to ensure cats are kept indoors, which is why all our adoptable cats go to homes where they will be kept indoors at all times. Cats that are raised indoors only are perfectly happy staying indoors, but cats that are raised with outdoor access are often not content with remaining inside. We believe that the quality of life and happiness of our cats is of the utmost importance, so rather than turn away cats that refuse to remain indoors we have the compromise of the Cats’ Cove and The House that Jonah Built structures. These are wonderful, friendly, visitor-greeting cats! We know them well, each and every one of them.

This month...

We said "Hello!" to:

Philomena and the Philomena Five! This lady was dropped off in our parking lot along with her 5 babies: Rumer, Renly, Pascal, Smudges, and Catsby. They're still working on growing and figuring out life. When they do it'll be time to find their Forever Homes! We hope they find them quickly.

Tayla, a little girl who was also dropped off in our parking lot. She was terribly sick and her intake led to one of the most heartwarming things you'll see... While Director Megan and Assistant Director Lynnette were tending to her, Schmookie, one of the girls we took in from the hoarding situation last month, was in a pen nearby. Upon hearing the baby's cries Smchookie perked right up and demanded she be brought to her. She was so insistent that Megan and Lynnette decided to let her see the baby. Smchookie instantly began to groom Tayla from head to toe! Just like she was her own! It was absolutely adorable, almost too much to take! They still nap together and are both working on healing together.

Chewie, a beautiful inky fluff who was found by someone and taken to the fire department, who contacted us. The circumstances where she was found were very, very stressful and she's stll extremely nervous. We're just letting her chill until she's comfortable. It's okay, Chewie girl, your best life has just begun!

Aliki! She's a little girl who was brought in by a kind gentleman who found her in his yard and had no way of caring for her. She has a really bad eye that will have to be removed but is otherwise doing great. After she gets all healed up she'll be ready for a home! We hope she doesn't have to wait long to find one.

Rochester, returned 11 years after being adopted. He's very unsure right now but he's trying to readjust to life here. An awful lot has changed since he left!

We said "Have a Great Life!" to:

Crackers! Our cuddly little one eyed boy has found his Forever Home! He is keeping his name.

Miley! It's laughable to think that this girl was ever thought to be feral as she picked out her very own family. She now lives in Michigan. Her name is TBD.

It's nearly time for this year's Cat-a-thon! This year, the event will be held from June 15-19. This is the biggest financial Fundraiser of the year. We will use the same type of board as we have in the past. The boxes will be numbered 1 through 400. We ask for a purchase of one of more boxes. The number on the box is the amount that you pledge to FFRC. Many fun activities will be held during the week. We plan on having two phone lines this year to make it easier to get through to us. Calls will be taken from 10am to 4pm, so that we can reserve time for meds and other crucial kitty business. We are also hoping to have a visit from a doctor! Also, in the US, we celebrate the GREATEST SPECTACLE IN MOTOR RACING", the Indianapolis 500. The Sunday before Memorial Day, hundreds of thousands of race fans flock to the Town of Speedway, Indiana to witness the Indy 500 and watch the winner kiss the yard of bricks!

Meet the Office Kitties!

When Director Megan first took over Assistant Director Lynnette told her they would have NO cats in their office. Long story short, there are now 5. 
Abba and Aponi were found in someone's yard with terrible eye infections that left them blind. The damage was so bad that they had to be removed. This brother/sister duo adapted well and are now sweet, playful, and adventurous cats! Their DOB is 6/28/23.
Smokey and Junior came to the Rescue after a beloved moderator passed away. They were his cats and one of his last requests was for FFRC to take care of them. They are both elderly gentlemen and very, very sweet. Junior is very diligent to help the ladies work at their desk. And Smokey takes all the naps so they don't have to. Natural born Office Kitties!
Junior's DOB is 6/29/11 and Smokey's is 11/20/11. 
Mitzy was born 4/30/24 and arrived 6/724 when some people found her but couldn't afford the care she needed for her badly infected eyes which needed to be removed. She is crazy and silly and brings plenty of youthful energy to the Office. Her favorite hobby is catching flies, though no one is quite sure how!
The Office is an ideal smaller area for the blind kitties to easily map out and for the elderly kitties to chill in without being overwhelmed or tiring themselves out. Besides, we can't expect Humans to do all the work on their own! So the next time you receive a reply to an email or phone call, or receive an item from a Flash Sale, etc. know that Megan and Lynnette don't get ALL the credit.

Remember MACARONI and PICKLES? Now they are MAC and PICCOLO! They now live with their Doggo buddy, Tanner. Mac especially loves sharing the dog's bed.

Our illustrious director, Megan, is on vacation. Here she is on her way to Jolly Ole England. I'm not sure how she got the clearance to take a bunch of her babies with her.

Adoptions:

MILEY was adopted on Mother's Day, 5/10. Congrats to the New Kitty Mom and Dad! On 2/15/26, Miley was found in Bronson Park, where the local splash pad is located, by Volunteers, Stacey and Kat. She was found with her "brother", Tippy. Her date of birth is 3/15/25. She went home to a 7-year-old brother, Davidson. Her name may change as her personality is discovered. She had quite a long drive (1.75 hours) to get to her new home in Ann Arbor, MI.

Intakes:

A new baby was found in a crate in the parking lot during Humane Ohio on Tuesday, May 12th. She has been named TAYLA. The baby has bad eyes, a bad respiratory illness, fleas and a bad lip. She is approximately 1 1/2 month to 2 months old. She has tested negative, so that is great!

TAYLA has an adopted mommy in SCHMOOKIE. When Schmookie heard the baby cry, she started trilling and talking to the baby. Then she started pacing back and forth as if to say, "Give me this baby!". Now Tayla is with Schmookie and both are happy. Schmookie is NOT Tayla's birth baby, but she may have had a litter before and recognized that Tayla needs her.

Here are weight updates on Philomena and her babies:

PHILOMENA, a great cat mommy. No update on her weight-she is doing great.

RENLY: He came in at 6.7 oz and is now 12.9. He is the chunkiest of the babies.

SMUDGES: He came in at 6.5 oz and is now 10.3.

PASCAL: He came in at 7.2 oz and is now 11.0.

RUMER: She came in at 7.1 oz and is now 12.4.

CATSBY: He came in at 6.5 oz and is now 10.2.

A very special day was honored on May 16th! Our Uncle DERECHO celebrated his 14th birthday. He wants to know, "Where is my medicine, I mean, baby food?"

Health Updates:

VICTORIA hadn't been feeling well and went to see Dr. Darcy on 5/8. She is a bit better, but we continue to monitor her.

SYLVESTER has a limp and saw Dr. Darcy on 5/11. His limp is a soft tissue bruise and is nothing major. He is on cage rest for at least a week but is doing fine.

JENNY also saw Dr. Darcy on Monday, 5/11. Her right eye will need to be removed; her left may be OK to leave--she does have some vision.

LUCKY recently tested positive for Feline Leukemia. Her intake test was negative, and she has since had a third test that showed negative for the disease. We are keeping her isolated with her brother CHANDLER. When Megan returns, she will visit Dr. Darcy for a more in-depth test. We do have a back-up Rescue that specializes in FIV and Feline Leukemia kitties.

Meet Nyota's Nest!

Nyota's Nest is a very special room just off the side of the Main Room. As one of our volunteers puts it: "it's our little old lady room. If they were humans they'd all be sitting around wearing their purple boas and red hats and drinking tea."
The Main Room can be a little overwhelming with how crowded and busy it is. Some cats love it! These ladies do not. They like the quiet, slow life. Nyota's Nest gives them just that. It's their own little space where they can be themselves. They have a window, high shelves to climb on, a TV, some pink couches, and even a chandelier! And of course a host of volunteers who treat them like the queens they are.

While Nyota is a Resident (you can learn more about her from the "Residents" page on our website), the others are adoptable! Once the others find their Forever Homes there will undoubtedly be more that come for a stay at Nyota's cozy little Nest while they wait for their humans to come adopt them.

Other Events:

We sent up either 46 or 47 cats for this week's Humane Ohio Event.

Also, back by popular demand will be CatStock. This event will be renamed soon. We have received a number of suggestions. This will be a scaled down version of past year's events, so that staff can enjoy themselves. It will be a great time for a picnic and visit with your FFRC family. There may also be a small work party put together during the weekend. Mark your calendars for 9/12 & 9/13. Megan is working on contacting local hotels to see if she can get a group rate for those wanting overnight accommodations.

Other:

No Q & A was held on 5/15, and we won't have one on 5/22, either--due to Megan's vacation.

FFRC Blog Week Ending May 9, 2026

We salute all Moms on Sunday, May 10th. This includes birth Moms, Stepmoms, adopted Moms and of course, Cat Moms! Make the day special for the all the MOMS in your life; they won't be with you forever.

Adoptions:

CRACKERS was adopted on 5/6. Her new Momma had thought that she was going to adopt a different baby, but as soon as she met Crackers, it was love at first sight. Crackers was brought in on 11/15/25 as a tiny 3-month-old. He had a bad eye that had to be removed. After his surgery, one of his sutures became infected and had to be re-opened and drained, before re-suturing. All is good now! Crackers will be keeping his name but will have the nickname of Big Boss Man! He currently will have some doggy and kitty friends, but his new momma will be moving soon, and he will be the one and only. Momma says that she will come back and get Crackers a friend at a later time. His ride home was only about 15 minutes and was made comfier from a blankie that was purchased for him by Valerie C.

These 6 kitties were listed last week in the intake area; however, since we just named them, I am leaving them in this area.

On Saturday 5/2/26, a mommy cat and her five babies were dropped off at FFRC. SURPRISE!!! The young momma cat is mostly grey, but has white feet, chin and chest. Her eyes are a beautiful gold. She is about 8 months old and weighed 6.5 lbs. She now is at 7 lbs. She has been named PHILOMENA. The name was submitted by Sara B. in the Name a Cat Program. Here is the result of the vote:

The babies are being well taken care of by their Momma. The babies' eyes are just now opening. She is very relaxed nursing them at the milk bar.

Health Updates:

MARILYN has a bit of a goopy eye. She is very tricky to treat. During Tony's visit on Monday, he helped Lynnette by holding Marilyn during her treatment. Tony had gained Marilyn's trust and held and petted her during his visit. After her treatment, she gave him the cold shoulder--we know that she won't hold a grudge for long. Please come back, Tony and bring Stephanie. And thank you for all of the IAMS food that you brought during your visit. Here's what my eyes are supposed to look like and will again soon.

Upcoming Vet Appointments:

VICTORIA hasn't been feeling well and went to see Dr. Darcy on 5/8. She has some weight loss, is vomiting and has diarrhea. She is almost 14 years old. We will be keeping an eye on her. She stays in Nyota's Nest and is not seen on camera.

SYLVESTER has a limp. We are hoping it is minor but want to be safe and sure. He will see Dr. Darcy on Monday, 5/11.

JENNY will also be seeing Dr. Darcy on Monday. We have been treating her eyes but want to see if there is a better direction for her treatment. She does have some sight, but it is limited.

Meet Back Thumpers Room:

In the back part of the Rescue there is a room with some pretty special kitties. We call it "Back Thumper's Room". It's essentially a mini version of the Main Room in that it has free roaming adoptable kitties. The only thing is, these kitties are more shy and like things to be quieter. You may notice that in the rest of this "Kitties You Don't See" series there are collages of all the kitties but not for this one. That's because there is technically no set group of kitties in this room. All are currently adoptable if we can find their perfect homes.
 Back Thumper's also acts as a recovery and intake ward. Sometimes kitties undergoing medical treatments are brought back (so we don't have to try and catch them every single day) and it also serves as a quiet space for new kitties to acclimate to life at the Center before "graduating" to the much larger Main Room.

So there you have it! Best case scenario everyone finds their Forever Homes and a whole new crew moves in! But in the meantime they are all welcome to stay at this luxurious feline resort for however long it takes.

The first two international shipments were paid by Debbie and Valerie. Total amount received from sale of the 733 tickets was $3,665. This was bumped up to $4,900, at last count.

Another Humane Ohio Event will be on Tuesday, May 12th.

The 21st Annual Lilac Festival was held on Saturday, May 9th. We had a donated table that was wo-manned by Gem and Mary Braids. If you ever have the chance to visit during this time, it is well worth the trip. We raised $758.35 this year.

FFRC Blog Week Ending May 2, 2026

It's MAY!!!! Each year, we celebrate May Day on May 1st. May Day is a traditional spring festival and International Worker's Day honoring seasonal renewal and labor rights. Did anyone dance around a maypole, crown a May Queen or give baskets for flowers or sweets? At FFRC, we danced (in the aisles--or was that dodged cats while trying to walk?), we have multiple May Queens, but they don't like to wear their crowns and we gave bowls of kitty and baby food, as well as snackers! I'd say that counts as a super May Day celebration!

Adoptions:

We had a wonderful double adoption this week. ANGELIQUE and BEBOP found their furever home TOGETHER! This sweet momma and daughter are very closely bonded, so we are very happy that they get to live together. They will have a 4-year-old BIG brother (22 pounds of orange fluffiness). His name is Garfield! As many remember, Angelique and babies arrived at FFRC on 11/25/25. Did we have room--we hardly ever do--but we were faced with a "Take them or something bad will happen to them" decision. AND we are so happy that we did find room in the center and in our hearts. Angelique was born on 2/14/25 and BeBop on 9/25/25. They will be living only a short ride from FFRC. Thank you to their new family for keeping them together!

Intakes:

We have a new kitty named KAYLEE. She is a returned kitty. She was returned because she was having peeing issues. However, we believe that the issue is more due to the young children and other animals in the home. We have not seen any issues since her new time at FFRC. She will need a quiet home with very few, if any, animal siblings. Kaylee was adopted in 2020. She is a long-hair Lynx Siamese and is very sweet, but shy. She is about 6-years-old.

AND.......more kitties!

On Saturday 5/2/26, a mommy cat and her five babies were dropped off at FFRC. SURPRISE!!! The young momma cat is a dark grey

and her babies are:

grey with white face, chest and feet

grey and with lots of white

all grey (maybe inky)

inky (maybe dark grey)

and lastly grey tiger with white.

The momma is taking care of her babies and loves to be petted! We will wait a bit before naming them.

Health Updates:

Our two bitty babies that Debbie is taking care of now have names. The boy is now named FOZZIE. His name was submitted by SonJa from the Name a Cat Program. There were 169 votes cast. The results of the vote were:

If you haven't seen Megan's Monthly Update, please take a look in Facebook Chatters, it summed up April very well. This was taken from her post.

These two were found in someone's barn. When they were brought to FFRC one was very sick and has since been feeling better. They've had good gains and healthy appetites! They don't know it but their best lives have just begun! They'll get a nice stay at our little feline resort until their Forever Humans come and find them.

DERECHO had a bit of runny stool, so he is one real meds. He is doing fine. Megan took him in the back the other day just to get his weight. He has not gained or lost any weight in quite some time, which is a wonderful sign.

ZOOKY gave us a bit of a scare during her spay. A mass was found on her bladder. Some of the mass was removed during the spay. We don't think the remainder will cause her any issues, but we are keeping an eye on her. It may be a hormonal thing that will resolve itself. She is doing fine.

RAMSAY is now able to drive in all 50 states. Thanks for making it legal! I bet that was a fun driver's test!

We have many kitties that don't appear on the main room camera. They are in Nyota's Nest, Front & Back Thumper's Room, the Cove, the Barn, the Kitty Kastle and roaming the grounds keeping it safe for everyone.

FFRC is so much more than just the Main Room and the Kabana! As you see here (and possibly more!), we have quite a few kitties that do not appear on cam. It's important for people to know this for several reasons:

1. When you donate, it goes to these guys and gals, too! You can see we provide the best care possible in the Main Room and the other areas are no exception. We even have several outdoor kitties that are aged in the double digits as living proof! These are all some pretty amazing cats, they deserve the very best and we make sure they get it. (We're only able to do this through your generous donations, so thank you!)

2. Some are Adoptable!! Nyota's Nest and Back Thumper's are two areas where we keep several Adoptable kitties. We'll go into more detail on those soon!

3. They're incredible cats! All of them! While they may not share the spotlight with the others they're all so special and wonderful. They're also all very loved. From silly Mitzi in the Office, to gentle Juniper in Back Thumper's, to sweet Chia in Nyota's Nest, to crazy Walter in the Cove, to personable JJ on the Porch, to handsome Blackie in the Barn, they all deserve to be appreciated. 

Events:

The first Roadside Cleanup of Powerdam Road was held on 4/29/26. Denise, Cindy, Sheyanne, Lynnette, Megan and visitor, Eric M., all helped. Sorry, if I left anyone out. It was a beautiful day and was fun for all. Technically, we need to have a cleanup every 6 months, but plan on doing it more often. Powerdam Road is the road in front of the Center. Keeping the area clean enhances the Center and all of its neighbors' properties.

All money has been received from last week's Flash Sale. Thank you so much for taking care of this so quickly.

Tuesday, April 28th was Humane Ohio Day. We sent a total of 53 cats: 25 males and 28 females, including Cazmin, Vivian, Zooky, Mimble and Chica. We have sent nearly 400 cats for their spay or neuter so far this year.
