Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV revealed

Automatically selects most efficient drive mode

Claimed average economy of 143mpg

This is the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV; a plug-in hybrid SUV that will be unveiled at the 2012 Paris motor show later this month.
The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV will be a rival for vehicles such as the Honda CR-V, Hyundai Santa Fe and Toyota Prius+ when it goes on sale here in 2013.
It has a plug-in hybrid powertrain that combines two electric motors (one on both the front and rear axles) with a 94bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine/generator and a lithium-ion battery pack.
Depending on driving conditions and how much battery charge is available, the Plug-in PHEV’s powertrain automatically selects the optimum drive mode to maximise efficiency.

Good times are due to return to Mitsubishi dealerships when the Japanese firm’s next new model reaches the forecourts at the end of November, writes Maurice Glover.

And they will be allowing the brand to achieve annual registrations of around 30,000 during the next five years – almost double the 17,000 sales expected for this year, believes Mitsubishi UK managing director Lance Bradley.

By 2017, he claims one in five of the models passing through his network will be driven by electricity or feature plug-in hybrid power units capable of delivering a remarkable blend of fuel economy and low tailpipe emissions.

“We’ve been first with the electric car but our next development promises to be the real game-changer for our dealers. While tests are showing that current hybrids return economy of around 40mpg, drivers are consistently achieving 100mpg more than that from prototypes of our plug-in vehicle in real-world conditions. We can’t wait to get it,” he told AM.

In an exclusive interview, Bradley revealed the plug-in technology to be unveiled in the new Outlander SUV at the Paris Motor Show is to be made available relatively quickly across other models to give Mitsubishi a clear lead in eco-mobility.

“Our last new regular product was the ASX two years ago and we have been very quiet since then, but the Outlander represents the start of a new wave of launches and in the next four years, everything currently in our line-up will be replaced.

“Compared with what we’re used to handling, this level of activity is a big change, and the plug-in hybrid Outlander due here next summer will be a real game-changer.

“Having a crossover car of this size with four wheel drive capability and 140mpg economy promises to grab a lot of attention. I think people spending up to £40,000 on a D-segment car will be interested in this model – it will help us tap new customers,” he said

Mitsubishi has confirmed plans for a plug-in hybrid version of the Outlander 4×4.

Due to be unveiled at the Paris motor show in September, the model marks the firm’s first foray into any form of hybrid production and follows on from the diminutive i-Miev electric city car.

he company claims that the plug-in hybrid Outlander will be capable of around 500 miles with a full charge and a full tank and has a “CO2 target” of less than 50g/km.

It will bear a strong resemblance to the PX-Miev II concept from the 2011 Tokyo motor show and have the ability to switch between three driving modes to shift the bias of power between the engine, electric motor and a generator.

The third-generation Mitsubishi Outlander is the first of the new generation of Mitsubishis that shines in all the right places, but ultimately lacks verve and character…

What is it?

The Outlander is significant for a number of reasons, chief of which is that it is the first step of Mitsubishi’s ‘next frontier’ which will drive the replacement of its entire range over the next four years. It is also the first series production model from a mainstream manufacturer to be designed with internal combustion and plug-in hybrid technology at the outset.

One variant will be available to UK buyers at launch; a 4WD, 2.2-litre diesel with a six-speed automatic or six-speed manual as tested here. The engine was launched in 2010 in the previous Outlander, but ditches the complex MIVEC valve timing system and sees turbo pressure and geometry recalibrated. With a small power and torque penalty, the new Outlander delivers improved emissions, and with a 100kg weight reduction it is 0.1sec faster to 62mph than the car it replaces.

Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corp. (MMPC) hopes to gain leadership in the passenger car market with the launching of its all-new “Mirage” in the Philippines in late October this year.

Orlando Alvarez Jr., MMPC senior vice president for treasury and marketing, said the MMPC was very much excited with the introduction of the new Mirage in the Philippine market as it would send a strong message that Mitsubishi is back in the passenger car segment.

“With its features, attractive styling, and superior fuel economy, we believe that the launch of the Mirage will help us boost our sales and market share in the passenger car market,” Alvarez said.

The launching of the all-new Mirage marks Mitsubishi’s return to the small-car passenger car market in the Philippines since the mid-1980s when its production was stopped.

“We at MMPC are very optimistic that the launch of the all-new Mirage will bring forth new excitement to the Mitsubishi brand and also meet the business objectives set to us for our midterm management plans for JUMP 2013,” Alvarez said.

Mitsubishi Corp has sounded a bullish note on commodity markets, saying it expects higher coal and steel sales as well as oil prices averaging $120 a barrel to drive record profits.

Japan’s biggest trading house by market capitalisation on Tuesday predicted “a recovery in commodities markets” for the current year to March 2013, and forecast a 9 per cent rise in the Brent crude oil benchmark to $120 a barrel, up from $110 a barrel in March 2012.

Japan is one of the world’s biggest importers of commodities and its leading trading companies are closely watched by investors.

Mitsubishi also said it saw higher transaction volumes in coking coal and steel products. The group’s outlook contrasts with that of Mitsui & Co, Japan’s number two trader by equity value, which warned on Monday that sluggish demand in developed economies would weigh on volumes and prices of coal, oil and iron ore this fiscal year, offsetting “robust” demand in emerging countries.

Analysts said Mitsui’s relatively muted outlook could be explained by its high exposure to commodities.

The company’s energy and metals divisions accounted for 90 per cent of net profits in the year to March, compared with less than two-thirds at Mitsubishi.

“They know the commodity cycle can be very volatile and that not all of their investments outside resources have been successful,” said Polina Diyachkina at Macquarie in Tokyo.

Undeterred by such price fluctuations, many Japanese trading companies are looking to increase their investments in the commodities arena. The companies have been looking for assets in energy in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear accident as Japan seeks to diversify its sources of power.

Itochu, one of Japan’s leading five trading houses, is looking to focus investment in energy and resources assets this year, taking advantage of a strong yen to lock in supplies. Yesterday it said it would add Y200bn ($2.5bn) to its capital spending plan, lifting its target to Y1tn for the two years ending next March.
