Tip 4. Create a happy biome for your roses:

This concept is something that takes time, and I am constantly learning new tricks! But here’s the gist: your roses will be happier when nature is happy all around them.

For example, destructive bugs are less of a problem when their predators are around and there are plenty of happy birds attracted to keep them under control.

One example of this would be, keep a birdbath nearby, which will attract birds, which will eat the bugs that eat your roses.

Or, do some research on partner plantings so that you can deter certain insects without spraying.

Or, don’t be so quick to wipe that spider web off of your roses. He may be eating the bad guys.

There are entire books written on this topic, so this tip is just meant to introduce you to the concept. I have also learned a lot on this from YouTube videos. Books or magazines on organic gardening are your friends – they will guide you in creating a balanced biome for your plants!

Tip 5. Your roses don’t have to be perfect!

This tip is simply meant to remind you that, nature is at its most beautiful when it is not sterile or manufactured. So, if your rose leaves do not look flawless, that actually adds to the charm.

Spraying chemicals for perfect roses is unnecessary! Let your roses be real and gorgeous, just like you. YES!

Use in the evening, and only as needed, of course! Using it “as needed” will help keep a happy organic biome.

So you want to grow roses but they are too fussy and need all those chemical sprays?

I am on a mission to debunk that, with the help and guidance of those who have gone before me!

Confession: I am still a newbie, but I already have learned (and studied) so much. But I have been seeing so much success in my rose garden – And I am going to pass my cliffs notes to you. Because roses are dreamy and romantic… and definitely not as hard as I thought!

Today is part one of my cliffs notes: How to grow easy, gorgeous, organic roses:

1. Select modern roses that are disease resistant. 
My faves are David Austin English Roses, but I also have an Eden Climber and plan on trying Cinderella. Most modern roses are bred to survive in a chemical-free garden.

2. Compost like crazy!
Well balanced soil environment prevents disease (Same for your body btw!). Compost heavily in early spring (with organic compost) and cover the surrounding area with 2 to 3 inches of good quality mulch. YES! Three!!

3. Have natural solutions:
Keep sprays on hand for pest and disease problems (that may crop up) that are easy and low maintenance. I have amazing sprays made from my fave essential oils that work!! And my roses love them. I usually only spray once a week, or after rainfall. Or as needed when I spot too many pests.

Below is my secret recipe to my beloved organic rose treatment spray. You can easily snag all of the goodies for making this rose treatment HERE (select the suggested products).

Darlene’s Organic Rose Treatment

(Spray in Early Evening)

In a spray bottle, add:

• 12 oz. water
• 2 Tablespoons Thieves Dish Soap
• 20 drops each: Clove EO, Peppermint EO, Thyme EO and Rosemary EO

So, you have beige carpets. And you wish they weren’t so…. boring. Here is how to make those carpets work for you, like you meant it!

1. Layer with Additional Rugs

Allow beige to fade away by using it as a canvas for fun, colorful, or beautiful rugs. Select different size rugs to achieve different effects on your decor:

• Toss down small throw rugs, on either side of a bed, for example, to break up the beige and add color and function.
• Delineate a conversation area using a medium-size rug.
• Pull the eye to the center of a space with the use of a larger area rug. This solution causes beige carpet to disappear into the background
• Try layering a faux animal skin rug over your beige carpet, adding the additional sculptural interest of shape!

2. Keep the Rest of the Room Bright

When your decor feels dull, a good policy is to simply brighten things up. Use fresh, lively colors, plenty of white, and plenty of good lighting. Here, white walls, colorful pillows, dreamy textures and bold patterns keep this room from feeling dreary. And the window treatments are removed to maximize brightness.

Distract and draw the eye up!

Add a dramatic display as a focal point in your space. Here, the styled bookshelves, huge mirror, and luxe furnishings add texture, color and vibrancy to all that beige beige beige.

Beige carpeting may be one of your least favorite decor features. But, when you study the ways that designers have purposefully incorporated a beige foundation into their designs and study what goes with them, you will find simple ways to allow the beige to fade into the background.

You see, I am a mom of three lovely children.

I homeschool them and also have a work gig that I run mostly online. I run my kids around to a variety of activities and events. I am a wife. And a daughter. And a sister. And a friend. I run myself around trying to juggle our household and make sure my gray roots don’t get too out of hand. You get the picture.

I want the world for my kids.

You get that, right? You may feel the very same way.

I want my kids to get a great education. I want them to have a relationship with God and walk with Him. I want them to love and be kind to their siblings. I want them to be well-rounded and have lots of experiences. I would love for them to see parts of the world and have their horizons opened before them. I want them to know scripture. I want them to have enthusiasm and optimism and a thirst for life. I want them to learn a good work ethic and be a team player. I want them to think outside the box and know how to work inside of it too. I want them to try soccer, and ballet, and piano. I want them to have some time on their hands, from time to time. I want them to experience boredom and for them to creatively work their way out of it.

But I do NOT care if they have a dozen cookies at their next concert gathering.

And, I do not care if they have a 3 course snack at every. single. soccer. practice.

And, I do not care if they have a fully painted, life-like backdrop for their class presentation.

And, I do not care if they have yet another ‘successful’ fund raiser, taking up 38 hours out of our week.

And, I do not care if they make it to state champs at age 7 after 98 hours of practice this week alone, not including the 10 summer camps they had to do to qualify.

And I do not care if they build the Roman colosseum using only egg noodles and ear wax.

And, I do not care if my young ballerina has a required 40 piece makeup set, curated with exact specifications.

This drowning-of-mothers….

has GOT. TO. STOP.

Why is that ‘participation’ has become a life sentence down the Snack-Sign-Up-Rabit-Hole? When… How did this happen? I GET that ‘it takes a village,’ but WHY is the village trying to build the Taj Mahal with 9 year olds and their moms?

PLEASE, please do not ask me for a dozen cookies.

Because, my tween just back-talked me… and I need to have time to sit with him and teach him about life and respect and how I love him no matter what.

PLEASE, please do not ask me for a dozen cookies.

Because my middle child is sensitive, and he needs time to walk with me in the back yard, at a slow pace.

PLEASE, please do not ask me for a dozen cookies.

Because my three year wants braids…  and braids take time, and I really want to say yes while she is still asking me.

PLEASE, please do not ask me for a dozen cookies.

Because my family needs home cooked meals and slow moments and bedtime stories. And cookies.

Do not ask me for a dozen cookies. Because I am a mother. And a wife. And a daughter. And that “loving well” thing??? Well, that takes time…

* Author’s Note: We are personally fortunate to have found some lower pressure groups for our kids.  We have had to be very mindful in our search about how much of a “job” it will be for our family to participate. This article is not about moms exercising their right to say “no,” but rather it is about how ridiculous and out-of-proportion the pressures and demands and extra commitments of extra-curricular activities have become.  I am, fortunately, good at drawing the line for my family… and we still get asked to do much “stuff.” Oh, and also, this is not about cookies, just in case you have not figured that out.

I pray that all is well with you! 2016 was a crazy year for me, one where my head was just barely above water. We went from “one thing to the next,” all year long AND did a major first floor renovation (read: THIRD full time job) in the midst of it all. Renovations went from April until Thanksgiving, and BOY am I glad we are done! (—> Pics are coming. Won’t say when, because … under promise and over deliver!!)

I shared a bit about my New Year’s Resolution on Instagram recently, and I wanted to share it here with you as well, friend.

Because maybe, just maybe you are in the same boat. My sweet baby is three, and I am not fully out of the toddler and baby fog, but almost. When we have little littles, we are on call 24/7 as a food giver/maker and also an irrational toddler negotiator. Tough work, folks. A fleeting blessing, but tough. And even harder when you are a foxy mama of 41, homeschooling 2 emerging tween boys and running a kick butt leadership business. Phew…

2017, for this giving mama, is all about “Darlene” emerging again. Slowly. Surely. With the hope to UnderPromise and OverDeliver. I am starting to care for myself more intentionally.

Here is what I posted:

My New Year’s resolution? “Put my oxygen mask on first.” Those of you who fly a lot with kids know what I’m talking about: if there is a loss of pressure in the cabin, mama’s are supposed to put their oxygen mask on before they assist their children to put their masks on. That way, everyone has a better chance for survival.

Last year, everyone else came first. This year, I’m not trying to elevate myself above others, but I am looking at self-care as a matter of survival. Because the truth is, if I don’t put my oxygen mask on first, I am no help.

What does this look like for me? Well, in the last week I have said this a lot: “Sorry, honey. Mommy is eating her breakfast right now, I will help you when I am finished.” …or this one: “In 20 minutes, sweetie. When I am all finished with my workout.” In all honesty, I was not saying these basic things to my kiddos. When you have a newborn and a toddler, you sort of forget how to take care of yourself. I am re-emerging this year, and putting my own oxygen mask on first!

So, mama. You truly must carve out some time, or something for yourself!

Contrast is a POWERFUL design tool. There are lots of ways you can drum up contrast:

• contrasting colors (on the color wheel),
• contrasting black vs. white,
• contrasting pattern vs. plain,
• contrasting textures,
• contrasting sizes, etc.

I have designed my entire kitchen project with a main goal of creating contrast.

Join me on Instagram to see more real-time changes to the kitchen, but here is today’s shot (taken during install. That is NOT my camo rug. wink. ). The overall feel will be quite different from this, since a lot of the detailing (including our tile, which will change everything) is not in yet:

With our kitchen project, I have been aiming for – design wise – a few overall elements that I really want:

1. Black and White and Graphic. I want a lot of contrast happening.

2. Well-loved and antique wood tones sprinkled in, to warm things up.

3. Glam farmhouse – I want this kitchen to fit well, and be true to, its farmhouse roots. But I also want the fun and contrast of some Glam.

4. Gold/Brass/Copper for the cherry on top. This brings in much of that Glam I was talking about.

Sooo, since Gold and Brass and Copper touches are our “Cherry on Top,” I have been pouring through lots of ideas for bringing copper into my kitchen in glorious and practical ways. I thought I would share some of the fun ways to bring that shine into your kitchen, particularly with copper.

Copper is ‘hot’ right now in kitchen design, but lets face it: Copper always has been ‘hot.’ It is a kitchen staple, especially in European kitchens. There are plenty of ways to incorporate this stunning metal into a working, beautiful kitchen. And, you don’t have to go all-in if you are wanting some Copper in your kitchen.

10 Ways to Use Copper in Your Kitchen:

1. Canisters

All kitchens need a little bit more storage. Why not make it pretty? And copper? I love looking for vintage copper canisters on Etsy.

2. Hanging pots

Nothing says ‘European kitchen’ more than hanging copper pots. I love this look. Have a bunch of pots? Hang them in rows. Have just a few? Hang them from a small bar or rack.

3. Pot sitting out on the stove

Ever think about storing one of your pots right on the stovetop? I make a lot of soup, and keeping a pretty pot on the stovetop adds character to my kitchen and it inspires me to get dinner going. In my new kitchen, I will have a copper pot with brass handles sitting on my stovetop.

4. Teapot

Copper teapots are so pretty. And when you have a pretty teapot, you can just leave it out (next to your copper pot) and it will make you smile… and drink more tea.

5. Cups

Mugs for all of your hot drinks. Moscow Mules. Indian drinking cups. Copper mugs are perfectly useful and stunningly gorgeous to display. There are some amazing choices out there, from vintage to modern.

6. Coffee Accessories

Why are coffee accessories so beautiful? and even more so in copper? Make your morning cuppa more glorious with copper.

7. Kitchen Tools

Big labels, stirring spoons, measuring spoons and measuring cups. All of these are such simple, affordable and easy ways to add a splash of copper to your kitchen. Maybe it is time to replace those mismatched (and partly missing) measuring spoons? That is what I will be doing – finally – in our new kitchen. #Livewithbeauty , right!?

8. Stack it up

Copper kitchen goodies look even better when grouped en masse. Together, copper makes a huge visual impact and adds instant bling to your kitchen.

9. Appliances

A copper Kitchenaid, or Vitamix, or Espresso maker. Keep it out on the counter, since it looks so pretty and makes your kitchen look French !  J’adore when practical and beautiful meet.

10. Sink

Want to really add a stunning feature of copper? A copper sink is incomparably beautiful and unique!

Life – and summer – is moving a million miles an hour, and I am trying to be so intentional about what matters most. I see my kiddos growing up before my eyes, and even thought I homeschool them and get to BE with them A LOT, I still see the clock spinning faster and faster. My oldest just turned 11, and suddenly, I have a TWEEN! A middle school boy. Hold me.

I have been pouring a lot of my creative energies into parenting lately. You certainly do need to get more creative as your kids get older, can I get an Amen? Our summer has been busy, but without much structure, mostly thanks to our fabulous kitchen project and some traveling adventures…. oh, and potty training.  Also, we are a mostly screen-free household (I know. I am crazy!), so I spend much of my time redirecting my kiddos into good activities and projects. I know most of you don’t come to this blog for parenting anecdotes, but this is SO where I am right now. Just pouring into my kiddos. I want to give them the BEST of me, not the leftovers. This discipline has resulted in me being offline a lot more….

all this to say, I miss you!

And yet….. In my off moments, , I sneak in some kitchen designing! I pour through Pinterest and find rooms that make my heart sing. That is definitely my momma time! My summer evening habit has included a piece of chocolate, a glass of wine, a fire pit, and some Pinterest browsing. Now, doesn’t that sound delightful!?

I have been really silent about it because that is very much a part of my creative process. If I get too much input, I have learned, I start to lose track of what I really LOVE and start to settle for things I just “like.” So…. I have not asked for many opinions, and I think it has been paying off.

I am happy to share a few of my latest decisions!!

Some of my choices (kinda clockwise):

1. matte black subway tile on the main kitchen wall and another accent wall

2. (not pictured) painted white brick will be on some of the other walls, and I am excited about that textural element

3. We picked our marble and I am so in LOVE! The piece is a Calacatta Altissimo, and this is probably my biggest splurge in the entire kitchen. And YES, I know about the risks of marble, so don’t tell me. MWAH!

Here is another pic of our slabs over on Instagrammy.

4. Feast on my future floors. YAY! I have loved these floors for a LONG time and I am just gonna go ahead and GO FOR IT! We are reusing our current oak floors in the parlor and dining room, and replacing our slate (I won’t miss you: dear, cold, hard floors that hurt my back!) kitchen floors with oak. Then we will be giving all of the oak floors this pretty treatment!

5. My hood! This is what my range hood is going to look like, except instead of black, it will be white – to pop out against my black subway tile.

6. I am 80% sure I am going with French Gray from Farrow and Ball for our cabinets. I am also considering Cromarty and Lamp Room Gray.

7. It will be different, but the main wall of my kitchen will have this awesome, contrast-y feel.

8. Love the white and black and brass and wood feel!  That is my main palate.

9. Definitely doing a built in banquette with channeled seat cushions. Hooray!

Since our kitchen is COMPLETELY EMPTY right now, I cannot wait to see this come to fruition. We are about 2 months out of seeing that happen (yes. You read that right. I will be KITCHENLESS for 2 months!!)

Most of you know that I am an essential oil nut. As in, I LOVE THEM big time! Still, here on the blog, I keep my oil chatter (and obsession) to a minimum so as not to gush too much, mostly keeping it to my sidebar and ad sections. But tonight I am doing something so fun that I had to hop on and tell you about it!

I will be going LIVE tonight to share my favorite beauty routine. And no surprise, it is all-natural and all oily and all the pretty, yummy smelling things. No toxins for this face of mine!
