Jen requested a few picks for cowboy boots, so here we go:

Ariat Show Stopper – was $200, now $159.99

Slightly taller than many cowboy boots, this style has a 14.5″ tall shaft. If you dislike mid-calf boots but love the cowboy style, these could be a great option! I’ll admit that I don’t own any Ariats myself, but have heard nothing but good things about this company that specializes in equestrian footwear. Also, that embroidery? Ach. Gorgeous. Somehow both Western and a bit punk all at once.

Volatile Denver – was $99, now $55.99 – $65.99

I’m a huge fan of rounded toes, and love finding cowboy style boots with this comfy toebox style. These gorgeously tooled boots have a higher heel, but chunky and stable for walking. They’re a vegan choice, affordable, and super stylish.

Frye Harness 12R – was $248, now $169 – $228

You saw that coming, didn’t ya? These boots aren’t a traditional pointy-toe, embellished style, but still say “cowgirl” to me. And, as I’ve mentioned about 12 billion times, they are comfy as slippers, versatile, and beautifully made. Several of the distressed styles – which I recommend both for winter wear and because they’re softer and pre-broken-in – are on sale now. This is a shorter, mid-calf style on most figures.

Earlier this week, former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky was arrested on new charges that he sexually assaulted two boys in addition the eight other alleged victims. One of the most chilling parts of the grand jury report said that Sandusky kept a boy in his basement and abused him during overnight visits to his home and, "on at least one occasion he screamed for help, knowing that Sandusky's wife was upstairs, but no one ever came to help him." This site finally made me get up off my butt and dye my hair. Seriously, I was up to almost two inches of roots. This living in the country thing is getting out of hand. First it's jean capris and do rags, and those look super cute, especially with the Jackie O-type sunglasses I have (Ralph Lauren, bitchez. Actually, mine are cuter, and more retro, but they're last season. Bought, of course, at Loehman's, because this chick does not pay retail, especially designer retail, good God, y'all).

But then - then, the whole "being in the country" thing sets in. First, it's boot-cut jeans to the doctor's office. Then, leggings (leggings!) to the store. I'm not saying I can't carry them off, of course, but before you know it, the roots are two inches long, and I can't remember the last time I wore a cool pair of heels.

And shoes are Art, y'all. One should never lose one's taste for adorable shoes, no matter what one's taste (flats, platforms, wedges, even sneakers). Shoes are a statement, even when that statement is "I got these for $5 to wear while putting up my tent at Pennsic, but they're super-comfortable, so now I keep them by the door for whenever I need to dash outside. Cool, huh?". In that spirit, when I saw these little darlings, I went right ahead and ordered a pair.

I'm always in need of cool shoes to go with my vintage clothes that aren't actually vintage, and therefore incredibly delicate. That's what I tell myself, anyway. The truth is, shoes are a deep love of mine, along with anything 1940-50s retro/vintage, and that's enough. For me (I know, I'm weird), shoes really are an art form, not just a funny joke to tell when I'm justifying yet another pair of Steve Madden 3" Mary Janes. Shoes will always fit me, no matter my hip size. I am lucky enough to be able to wear heels (and I know I'm lucky!), so I do so.

All this is a long roundabout way of saying I'm traveling up to Winterthur next week with a bunch of friends, and I'm packing heels. I know which ones I can wear for a museum tour - hell, I know which pair I can wear for an unexpected walk around the entire historical district of Philadelphia.* I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I grew up thinking I wasn't beautiful, so being impeccably dressed had to suffice. Now I'm older and wiser, and I've realized I just really, really love cute clothes.

I'm looking forward to seeing the Plimoth Jacket in its case - I haven't seen it since the "unveiling" reception at Plimoth.

*When my brother said "lunch", I dressed accordingly. I should know better.

Jezebel: Two Dead After Another Shooting At Virginia Tech [Virginia Tech]

Today in an incident that brought up horrible memories of the 2007 massacre on Virginia Tech's campus aside from being horrible in its own right, two people were shot and killed at the university. The school was put on lockdown for four hours this afternoon, which was particularly rattling for students, faculty, and staff who were on campus four years ago. However, unlike last time, the school is being praised for quickly warning the community about the threat and keeping everyone informed throughout the day. More »
