This is the final version of an earlier Study of Heather started on a snowy day when the studio was freezing. I used a reference photo to complete Heather’s face and am very happy with the result. Heather answered my post on CL for a model. It was snowing that day, odd for Chattanooga this time of year. Flakes as big as frogs were falling but not sticking to the roads. I had two heaters on Heather in her leather chair but the still weren’t enough. Working with someone who’s getting goose flesh makes me rush the drawing so I shot a reference for her face and will post the finished pastel when I’m done. Heather was a good sport and a real trooper dealing with the chill.

Amy Powell asked me to work with here troupe creating a poster for the show “Many”, a Grounded High production taking place in April 2010. I shot the troupe in costume over an evening, chose the best pose of each member and created this pastel as the basis for the poster.

I’m working with a model here in Chattanooga. This pastel is from our first session. She has a natural grace and knows how to pose. I used a limited palette for this peice, roughly six colors.

Jen of Grounded High, Pastel on Stonehenge Paper, 15″ x 22″

I share a studio in the Rivoli Mill with many talented artists and performers, the most unusual of which is the aerial troupe, Grounded High. I asked Amy and Jen if they would allow me to shoot a few reference shots for pastels. They agreed and this is the first of the series. This is Jen warming up. It’s done with Prismacolor NuPastel on Stonehenge paper. I’ll be making it available as a print in the near future. Contact me if you’re interested.

Open Figure Drawing Session at the Rivoli Art Mill

Join the artists at the Rivoli Art Mill on Sunday afternoons from 2pm-5pm for an Open, Uninstructed Figure Drawing Session.

Live model will be posing in 15 one minute gestures, 3 five minute sketches and 1 fifteen minute pose. 3 thirty minute poses will follow with breaks in between for the model.

Cost: $10.00 per person.

Please provide your own materials and easel. The space can hold 10–12 people comfortably. Please arrive 15–20 minutes early to reserve your spot.
