New spa facility to boost spa tourism

A new spa facility estimated to be worth $1 million is going to boost the spa tourism industry.

Tourism Minister Faiyaz Koya opened the Essence of Fiji Rejuvenation Center on the Nadi Back Road on Saturday evening. Koya says the center provides a new and fresh concept for travelers transiting through Fiji.

“The Essence of Fiji Rejuvenation Center has embarked on a million dollar investment that has created about 30 jobs for locals in Nadi and not to mention the significant contribution it will make to the economy.”

Owner Debra Sadranu has been operating her spa business in Fiji since 1998. Sadranu says the accomplishment of the center has fulfilled her goal of positioning Fiji in spa tourism.

The new venture is another achievement for her business which has grown over the years. Sadranu owns the Essence of Fiji beauty products that are produced locally, the Senikai Spa’s and the South Pacific academy of beauty. -

SEVERAL resorts have invested heavily in providing state-of-the-art facilities for local and international guests including Turtle Island Resort on a private island in the Yasawa Group.

Boasting its newly constructed free standing Vonu spa, owner Richard Evanson said the addition of the spa completed the romantic and relaxing experience of Turtle Island.

"We know our guests' expectations will be exceeded when they try the new Vonu spa," he said.

The resort's airport branch manager, Rotishma Chand, said the spa was nestled along the island's famed Blue Lagoon and captured the gentle breeze from the South Pacific.

"Vonu is the Fijian name for turtle and these majestic creatures infuse serenity and peace into the surroundings of both the island and the new spa," she said yesterday.

"Keeping true to the sustainability history of Turtle Island, the world-class spa is constructed of hardwood grown mostly on the island and crafted by Fijian artisans and woodworkers to maintain an authentic Fijian look and feel."

She said an important feature of the spa, given its popularity as a wedding destination, was a dedicated bridal preparation room.

Botanical ingredients produced in Fiji are harvested sustainably without impact on the plants themselves or the surrounding environment.

Processing of several of the ingredients used in formulations rely on hand-operated cold pressing of nuts into oil. This limits the carbon impact on the environment while creating employment opportunities for rural communities.

Some of the methods employed in processing the ingredients use a natural source of energy such as passive solar dryers. This eliminates the need to use bio-mass, electric resistance, or liquid fuel-fired heaters.

By-products from coconut husks and the shell material from oil bearing nuts are recycled as mulch and fertiliser.

The structures which support these enterprises are often made of local, environmentally low-impact materials such as plaited sago palm roofing. Such buildings are bright, airy, and cool, eliminating the need for artificial lighting or ventilating. Some suppliers of the processed botanicals minimise any environmental impact by running generators etc on natural, unrefined coconut oil.

KADAVU, FIJI ISLANDS – 26th February 2011 – Matava – Fiji’s Premier Eco-Adventure Resort is proud to be announced as the winner of the Environment/Local Sustainability Award at the AON Fiji Excellence in Tourism Awards 2010 for its policies on environmental sustainability and the environment.

The annual Fiji Excellence in Tourism Awards night sponsored by AON was held at the The Warwick Resort and Spa on the Coral Coast on Friday 26th February 2011, and attended by Matava Director, Stuart Gow. Many local tourism operators and business people attended the evening presentations. This year there were over a thousand nominees in the 12 categories. This glamourous event was Red Sea Rig & Cocktail theme, welcoming guests with a 3 course dinner, an awards ceremony & fantastic live entertainment with a turn out of over 400 guests.

The Environment/Local Sustainability Award recognises efforts to preserve the environment & local communities for the benefits of locals & visitors alike in developing & fostering both environmental & national conservation. It also assesses efforts to support cultural initiatives and promote public awareness and education in support of “Fiji Made” products by reducing their carbon footprint.

The genesis of the idea:

During our first trip to Africa, my husband Scott and I learned that while we were limited to 40 pounds (18.14 kgs) of luggage on safari, the airline had an allowance of 100 pounds (45 kgs) of checked luggage plus a 40 pound (18.14 kg) carry-on. In making plans for a second trip, we looked into visiting a school near the lodge we would visit in Botswana. We contacted our safari company, Wilderness Safaris, to see if we could determine any specific needs of that school. Armed with that information, we were able to deliver 140 pounds (64 kgs) of school supplies, including soccer balls, to the school. It was enormously rewarding to be able to help the people in the community that had given us such a life-changing experience. Since then, we and a few of our fellow-travelers have made several trips to other countries in Africa and have been able to deliver an estimated 1,000 pounds (453 kgs) in donations of clothing, school and medical supplies. I asked a travel agent why other travelers did not use their luggage allowances this way. “Because nobody thinks about it,” he said. That was our “aha” moment.

Scott and I knew from our experiences that taking large amounts of supplies required a great deal of time and close logistical cooperation with the touring company. We felt we needed to come up with a simpler and more direct way for travelers to take supplies where they were going.

By asking travelers to pack 5 lbs (2.27 kgs) of supplies, we felt we would be able to involve everyone who wanted to add value to his or her trip by participating. By delivering the supplies directly to the traveler’s accommodation, it would be possible for every traveler to contribute and require no logistical support. That amount would take only a small space, require little effort and still make a big impact.

I realized that to make my idea a reality, I would need the assistance and skills of many other talented people. It is with gratitude that I would like to acknowledge and thank the people below as well as those who have agreed to serve on our Board. They have given generously and freely of their time and expertise.

Mantra's Peppers Resorts, Hotels and Spas will soon be calling Naisoso Island in Fiji home, after signing a deal to manage the islands 178 luxury apartment hotel.

Known for their charming locations, impeccable service and in many cases award winning restaurants, Naisoso Island’s developer Bob Lowres said the Peppers partnership was a major coup for Fiji.

“We are thrilled to have such a quality and unique brand associated with Naisoso Island and indeed Fiji in general,” Lowres said.

“Joining Pepper’s 25 distinctive properties in Australia and New Zealand, each with their individual charm and character, will no doubt add to the sophistication of our island.

“We are also delighted to be the Peppers Group’s first foray outside of Australia and New Zealand.

“Fiji has always been known for tropical family holidays and with Naisoso, we have made living here more accessible for average Australians and New Zealanders and now with Peppers Fiji we will have a rare and inimitable holiday option for holiday makers also,” he said.

Mantra Group CEO Bob East said the foray into Fiji was a natural progression for the innovative Peppers brand.

A common question asked is what EXACTLY is ecotourism? Ecotourism is: "Responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people." (TIES, 1990)

Creating an international network of individuals, institutions and the tourism industry;

With spas proliferating like blogs and the nation’s belly fat, there’s a need for bigger and better, nonpareil and ne plus ultra to draw new/more/different customers. From strange and sacred nuts you’ve never heard of to inner-child-pleasing mud parties, the following spas have come up with creative ways to beat the competition.

Kara Spa in Los Angeles invites you to give your thumbs and wrists a break from your Blackberry and indulge in the real (juicy) deal. The thirty-minute “Blackberry Balm Hand Massage” treatment combines stress- and strain-relieving acupressure techniques with soothing rocks and a special “Blackberry Balm” to undo the damage caused by being enslaved to your hand-held communication devices. Cost is $90.

The Sports Club/LA Miami at the Four Seasons Hotel Miami cashes in on the Mojito craze (still going strong) with its signature Miami Mojito Scrub and Massage, designed to stimulate circulation, detoxify the skin and open the sinuses. Afterward, head to the poolside open-air lounge for a Champagne-based bubbly mojito. Fifty- and eighty-minute versions are available for $125 and $185.

The Spa at The Westin Maui on Maui’s Kaanapali Beach has seen a significant rise in the number of men visiting the spa and has adjusted its menu accordingly. The Heavenly Golfer’s Massage addresses the issue of repetitive activity and includes a volcanic scrub. Cost is $130 for 50 minutes. There’s also a Volcanic Men’s Pedicure employing the power of volcanic clay.

In Palm Springs, at The Well Spa at Miramonte Resort & Spa, you do it yourself. “More and more guests are looking for fun and different things to do … with their significant others… and with their best friends,” said Jennifer Di Francisco, the spa’s director. Thus they came up with the Pittura Festa painting party treatment, where you get to play with colorful, therapeutic mud such as red Sedona clay. Wash it down with a Swiss shower or a cocktail.

The Painting Party for Two is 45 minutes for $155 or 90 minutes for $325 includes massage).

Sun-worshippers in Las Vegas can baby their precious hides at Spa Mandalay via the Dilo Repair treatment. The Dilo nut hails from Fiji's scared Dilo trees, or "trees of a thousand virtues." Fiji nut oils, Aloe Vera and coconut oil are the other stars in this application created to heal the skin from sun exposure, inflammation and scarring. Twenty-five minutes for $75.

Also in Vegas, Stephanie Doud, the new Spa Director Stephanie Doud of Hibiscus Spa at the Westin Casuarina Las Vegas Hotel, Casino &Spa, has designed an Ice Cream Pedicure. It begins with a Chocolate, Strawberry or Vanilla Sugar Scrub exfoliation, followed with a delish marshmallow mask and moisturizing vanilla body icing and nail polish. Fifty minutes for $95.
