Nowadays a lot of folks would rather take their sweetheart and fly to a tropical paradise to get married than deal with all the commercialism in today's weddings.

Well that is exactly what my honey and I chose to do. We packed our bathing suits, grabbed our sun glasses and headed to Fiji to get hitched. We didn't tell our family members where we were headed, we just drove to the Los Angeles Airport, parked in the long term area, dashed onto our plane at 11:00 PM, sat down and enjoyed a glass of champagne, ate a meal and went to sleep.

We woke up just as the sun was peeping over the horizon, lighting up extraordinary tropical islands ringed with coconut palms and surrounded in aquamarine seas. The visuals were so exciting we could hardly wait to land.

The customs were simple and friendly taking only five minutes. Our travel agent at Travelwizard.com had a driver waiting for us who greeted us with a huge smile and drove us over to the office where we paid $12 for our marriage license which took only ten minutes. The lady who gave us our license hugged us and sang a Fijian love song. Then we drove down to the Denaru Marina and boarded a catamaran and headed out to the Mamanuca Islands.

Our agent suggested Malolo Lailia Island because it had a marina with boats and a small resort with thatched huts, (Called bures in Fiji) where we checked in. I asked the desk clerk if it would be possible to get married on the beach in a couple days? He nodded yes and asked if we needed a pastor? We told him that we were Baptists and would like a Christian minister if possible. He smiled and said he knew one on another island only an hour away and would try to get him for us.

We spent all day snorkeling around the lagoon, basking in the sun, sleeping under the coconut palms in total solitude.

A couple days later Donna reminded me that we were supposed to get married and asked me to check with the resort manager to see if he had contacted the minister. We got in our bathing suits and opened the door and were surprised to see about 30 Fijians patiently waiting for us, all decked out out in beautiful flowers. They had decorated a golf cart like a Rose Parade float and invited us to sit in it while they drove us to a palm shaded cove on the lagoon where they had constructed a magnificent arch in a rainbow of flowers for us to stand under as we got married.

There must have been over a hundred natives singing Fijian wedding songs and tossing flowers on us as the minister read our vows to us. It was a heart warming experience we'll never forget. Then they carried us over to a dugout canoe with a sail and we sailed off into the sunset with champagne and Fijian love songs.

When we returned a couple hours later there was a band, and a massive table of food including a large pig they had cooked in the ground. We ate; we sang Fijian songs; we played into the we hours until we were exhausted, they retired to our bure.

A week later when we checked out the manager handed us an album of pictures with a huge grin that he had taken during our wedding.

The bill for the whole wedding including the minister, the food, the flowers, the band and everything was only $350. We slipped him an envelope with our thanks and appreciation.

When we returned we were happy, tanned, relaxed and really thrilled that we decided to get married in paradise.

Here's a little secret anyone thinking about getting married should be aware of. I know this because I got married in Fiji and visit these beautiful islands often.

First of all, Fiji is only 8 hours from Los Angeles, and the flights leave a 11 PM so you don't lose a day flying. You board, you watch a movie, eat a nice meal, take a nap and you wake up in paradise at 5 am, early enough to enjoy the full day.

The registrars office in Nadi, (pronounced Nandi) is about the most friendly place I've ever experienced. It only takes about 15 minutes to get your marriage license and a hug.

Then you have a choice to stay on Viti Levu, the main island where you can find nice accommodations, adventures, rafting, biking, jeeping, etc--or catch a boat to your favorite island, or take a float plane to remote Islands.

You have a lot of choices of islands to pick a romantic wedding location, or weddingmoon at. Most couples choose weddingmoons, because your honeymoon begins to moment you get married.

There are luxurious Island resorts that are simply amazing. Then there are some Fiji Island resorts that are very nice, but not so expensive. When I say expensive, I mean $7000 to $12,000 for two for a week including airfare.

As the founder of Travelwizard.com I could have stayed at anyplace I wanted, but we decided on Malolo Lailai Island's Musket Cove Resort in the Mamanuca Island Chain. It was only $3,300 for both of us for 8 days including airfare. The marina and boats and proximity to the barrier reef was important because I'm a diver.

Now get this, the wedding ceremony which included flowers, a big floral arch and an outrigger canoe decorated like a Rose Parade float, a minister, champagne, food and drinks and a native band playing Fiji love songs that lasted from 11 AM to 12,00 that night only cost $430. All the local Fijian's came and participated, singing and playing like only Fijian's can do.

Money couldn't have bought a better experience, the natives were so friendly and genuine it made for an extraordinary experience. Lots of hugs and sincere tears of happiness

We have since sent hundreds of couples to get hitched in Fiji, some at Fiji's most luxurious resorts, and some to everything in between. They all had the same wonderful experience.

So, all in all, especially in our wintertime, Fiji offers a chance to get married on an extraordinary tropical beach, and at all price ranges You don't have to worry who's showing up, what to wear all that stressful stuff. We go married in our bathing suits, my wife had a silk shawl too.

Vanua Levu, is similar, but the tourism facilities are not as easy to find.

Fiji's outer islands are where most of the tourists visit. The Mamanuca and Yasawa islands chains are the most popular and have most of the resort hotels. You'll discover pristine beaches shaded with coconut palms and aquamarine seas so clear you can see the bottom 100 feet below as if you were floating on air. Needless to say, scuba diving and snorkeling are a favorite activities as well as deep sea fishing.

There are hundreds of Fiji resorts to choose from, a daunting task for someone that has never been to Fiji. I've been vacationing in Fiji since 1976 and was married there in 1996.

If you want a great vacation in warm tropical weather Fiji is my top choice. Its only 9 hours from Los Angeles to Fiji. You leave at 11 at night, have a nice meal, watch a movie or two, sleep a while and you wake up in paradise early in the morning, not wasting a day that way.
