How Ready is Manny Pacquiao on Pacquiao vs. Cotto?

Its a week before the ultimate firepower fight: Pacquiao vs. Cotto and everyone here are so excited with this upcoming battle of the two great boxers. I’ve just recently watched the HBO 24/7 and seen how both fighters prepared for the “day” and Miguel Cotto is seems to be more serious about this as he trained 35 days before Manny Pacquiao ever step the gym for his 8 weeks training program. Aside from that, it seems that the Filipino boxer has so many distractions during the period that he started training. He shot several shows on TV and one movie. Got “hit” by typhoon when he starts his first week training in Baguio and many others that made him to pause the fight preparation.

I said on my previous post that I believe that Pacquiao’s speed will still triumph against Cotto’s power despite these distractions and negative thinking I have with how Pacman prepared for the fight.

I, and other people from the Philippines have their faith and hope for Manny and I hope that this will not be faded by an upset. However, even he lost in this fight, his legacy and honor can’t be forgotten.

Go Manny, “you can do it!”

PLDT DSL Connection Problems and Fix

Recently, I changed my internet connection to PLDT DSL in our province from Smart Bro. I really find it fast compared to the wireless connection but I also experienced a certain problem from DSL which I don’t know if it is just a coincident or what. I always lost my connection on PLDT DSL after midnight and it only resumes early before 7 in the morning. I already experienced it twice and I don’t know if they have technical problems or it is just what it is. I don’t want to call their 171 customer care yet to report this incident but I am planning to if I will experience the same thing more later.

Now in my search for solution or fix for this problem on the web (using my SmartBro – I believe that it only needs some tweak on the DNS of the connection settings), I found this post from NonThoughts blog enumerating a list of different valid DNS servers that is working with PLDT. Here are the numbers listed by the said blog post and I use the first 4 numbers on the list and my connection on PLDT did came back.

Moved to BlueHost from HostGator

I have mentioned on my oes tsetnoc post (my other oes tsetnoc blog on this space), that I will be leaving HostGator and will be transferring to a new home and that is BlueHost (yes i.e. an affiliate link, click on it if you want to sign-up for a new hosting account at BlueHost). I know the payment scheme of BlueHost doesn’t have a monthly payment so I prepared the amount this month so that I could proceed with the transfer. Why I made decision in transferring my site to a new host? and Why BlueHost?

I like HostGator’s customer service. I am actually still hosting some of my websites. What I don’t is when my site became inaccessible specially if the traffic kicks in unexpectedly due to some instances that I can’t control. I experienced it twice or more on HostGator, any time that there’s a special event and it hits my posts then traffic comes, it causes my site to generate a 403 (Forbidden Error) or 500 (Internal Server Error) inaccessible error. Imagine on the peak of the traffic which I think not good for my site. I know I am in shared mode and its one of the limitation that I think normal to the price that I paid but I found this offer from BlueHost enticing dealing with the CPU overload which is the cause of my site’s downtime. They say that they’ve developed a certain module that will deal with this kind of problem and will avoid such inaccessible problems.

This triggers me to decide to take my chances on BlueHost. The trouble that I have just experienced is the transferring of data. But that’s the always that I am encountering whenever I made a transfer. I also encountered some stuff such as reconfiguring the PHP.INI to increase the memory to use in executing scripts and other stuff.

In conclusion, I am on the first phase of the BlueHost and checking my site for some 404 (Not found error) and later I will just share with you my experience with BlueHost if I found some issues about it.

Most Effective “Anti-Virus” For You

There’s a lot of anti-virus software in the market today but still a lot of people are victimized by these programming codes that gone rogue into the cyberspace and annoying a lot of people in the world. Conficker is on the top list of the most prevalent virus in the world and the Taterf that targets massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) is just a sample of viruses that attacked businesses and computers around the globe. Now to the question what is the most effective “anti-virus” for you, the answer is not another memory hog anti-virus software (of course we need it) but the real cure is “awareness.” Knowledgeable of the different preventive measures and policies to apply on your business operations and computer usage can make a real fix even the threat is not yet there.

Here are some of the things that you need to consider to implement a very effective way of preventing or fixing possible virus threats:

Be aware. Inform yourself of the latest security threats by reading intelligence reports from different anti-virus and security websites. Remember, “knowledge is power.”
Beware. Once you are aware of the threats, beware and be ready. For instance, you already know that virus infections are prevalent on thumb drive so you need to implement policy in your office (or even at home) that nobody will use a pen drive specially if it was used on other PC outside the office/home. If in case if it can’t be avoided, equipped your computers with autorun.inf disabler and anti-virus programs.
Be secured, don’t disable your firewall. Usually game players disable their firewall for some reasons. However this causes the problem in the long run. Firewall protects you from being easily accessed by malicious codes and if it is disabled then its like you open your house for theft to be ransacked.
Be cautious. When you surf the internet and search on different search engines, be cautious of the websites you are opening. Search engines like Google and Yahoo have this mechanism of identifying if a website is dangerous or not. They usually marked this site then shows on their result pages that “This page may harm your computer.” They did not put this message on their result pages for no reasons. So don’t dare to click it.
And Finally, be equipped. Install an anti-virus program that has a real-time scanner, network and web security features. Update the virus database of this program regularly. Regular updates makes a higher chance for your computer not to be infected by recent viruses.

Hope these tips will help you deal with your “virus problems.”

Page Rank (PR) Change on Toolbar Today

Google, Webmasters and SEO

As mentioned in SearchEngineLand.com, PageRank was dropped by Google Webmaster tools the other week and this emphasizes the message of the giant search engines that webmasters and SEO specialists should not focus so much on PageRank that is shown on their toolbar. However, today, despite this indication of Google on not emphasizing PRs on site, they made a global pagerank update on their toolbar. I checked on my several sites and some of them increases or gain their PR. However this blog still retain its PR3 not moving a one notch.

According to the article that I have read relevant to this update, this send a mixed message for webmasters and SEOs (Google of dropping the PR then updating it for some reasons). A lot of people thought that it will eventually lost from the famous Google toolbar but with the push on new PR data this thought will be changed.

Windows 7 Issues and My Experience

The other day, Windows 7 was officially released worldwide and I download a version that is released on October 22. I only downloaded a Windows 7 Ultimate N ( a version without media player ). As far as I have experienced, I found no problem nor issues with Windows 7 yet. Actually I am impressed with how it performs and responded to programs and requests. My colleague, when I asked him to try it for surfing on the web (he’s been using Vista for quite sometime now) and he uttered that Windows 7 browse and connect faster compared to its previous version.

Now, I am asking them to try to install software like Photoshop, Visual Studio and other memory hog software to check if still performs that well. As of today, when I gather information from different forums, a lot of graphics designer and web developers are saying that they didn’t find issue or compatibility problems with their tools used under this new OS.

One person mentioned on the forum that the version have problems with some games that he is currently playing and problem with his Samsung phones which I think can be solved by the manufacturer/developer of this from the Support Page of their sites.

Right now my rating for Windows 7 based on my experience and other people’s feed back is a thumbs up.

Migrating/Transferring Data from Foxpro to MySQL

Foxpro to MySQL

Ever since the “death” of Visual Foxpro, I changed my primary programming language to much livelier and used offline and online by a lot of people. I shift to PHP, VB.Net and then later will go through Phyton (next year). As part of my transfer to other language, my problem that I encountered was transferring the data from my FoxPro tables to the MySQL server. I refuse to use MSSQL because it is so expensive to implement. Now here’s what I’ve did to transfer the data:

I installed the ODBC connector which you can download at MySQL’s download page.
Then, since I wasn’t able to find a freeware to directly transfer the data from Foxpro to MySQL, I converted first Foxpro tables to MS Access format through converting it to Foxplus format first (using copy to filename type FOXPLUS) then importing it to MS Access as a new table.
I download a free tool that is use to migrate Access database to MySQL which you can download it HERE then use it to transfer the Access data to MySQL. Remember this freeware requires you to install the MySQL’s ODBC connector before it will work.

To summarize what I’ve did, here’s the flow:

Foxpro -> Access -> MySQL

That’s it! That is how I do it. I know its quite messy and I’m too tired to create a program that will automatically transfer the data. Maybe later but for now, these steps works for me.

Another Year Have Passed: It’s My Birthday Again!

I will be a year older by November 2 and will celebrate my day of birth with my family. Actually its difficult for me to have a celebration because I grew in a tradition and belief that prevent me to conduct a party. Here in the Philippines, we celebrate the All Souls Day (day of the dead) every 2nd of November and we usually go to the cemetery every year to pray for our loved ones. That’s right, everyone is lighting their candles in the cemetery during my birthday . My parents told me when I was young that we should celebrate the day solemnly for the respect of those who have passed away. This is the reason why I usually use this as a punch line every time my office mate is teasing me about having a party during my birthday. I always told them that to “just pray for me and please proceed to the cemetery with your candles.” This usually cracks a smile.

Well, it doesn’t matter if I will have a party or not. The most important thing is God have given me another year to live and to do things in his name and his glory. This is more than a party to thank for and what more could I ask for. I have what I want now, a family, a job + online career, a website that earns enough to what I expect and a good health. Maybe I will just ask for a car from Him next year.

HTC HD2 in the Philippines

HTC HD2: Windows Mobile Touch Phone

A friend of mine yesterday told me that he wants to buy this new phone called HTC HD2 instead of waiting for the Blackberry Storm 2. He told me that it is much better compared to iPhone or Blackberry. I have heard about this Windows powered phone the other month but I am not expecting about this one. I personally love to have an iPhone but its too luxury for my case. I am afraid that I might lost it or damage it like what I have did with my iPod Touch. Sadly, according to him, it is not yet available in the Philippines.

As per according to the official press release of HTC.com, they will be releasing the said phone this month or early next month in Europe then after that (which might be next year, max), it will be spread all through out the region (so wait mode for Philippine gadgeteers). I am expecting that this phone might be distributed by the Globe Telecom in the Philippines.

Here are some of the great features and specification of this new Windows phone – HTC HD2:
